Research project for the new site. I need a general idea of how wide we can go with the new layouts.

To check this, right click on your desktop, choose settings and look under screen resolution for the numbers.

i've got two notebooks. a 12" ibook g4 with 1024 x 768 and an asus with 1400 x 1050. still use the ibook alot so i'd prefer (and voted) 1024 x 768.

these days we have to at least design for 1024x768 rick. most new or semi new computers won't even support 8x6 anymore.

I resolve to not try to hang off the screen door, no matter how much fun the cat makes it look.

Thus, my screen resolution.

I have a pair of 17inch LCD's both running at 1024 x 768

Running 1 screen isn't enough but 2 at this resolution gets me by OK

I'm at 1280 x 800 on a Sony Vaio laptop with the widescreen...should I be doing something else? Everything looks fine..

Sorry, can't vote....1152 x 864

--Although, IMO, I find most of the text, especially the thread titles too small, and the smallest font size of any forum I use.

1280 x 1024, but my notebook is smaller.

Please make it stop reloading when the window is resized!

One last thing... do you prevent google from indexing this site? Seems like you are missing out on many potential new members that may be out there googling their old BMX friends/tracks/etc. and not being able to find them while the answer lies here within this site.

If you're going to a fixed-width layout, 1024x768 is where you want to be. If it's going to scale with the browser, again, 1024x768 or higher is where you should target.

I ran a poll on my site a while back and almost 70% of readers (over 6K people voted), were between 1024x768 and 1280x1024.

My company in the UK develop websites and all the new sites we have been doing in the last 12 months are designed for screens set 1024x768 as a minimum. It works out as 955x600 if you want a page with no scrolling across or and down. Our decision is based on current site stats from users and the fact that all Dell pc's these days ship with the screen set at 1024 of higher. Look forward to seeing the new site.
