Hello, wasn't quite sure where to put this, But I'm sure some people here should be able to help. So here it goes, I was wondering what the best low cost way to ship a complete BMX bike?
I have someone telling me it's going to cost $136 to ship a complete bmx bike from Ohio to Ca. by means of FedEx, I'm still waiting to find out size of box and if that's ground shipping. Just figured I would ask here for some idea's on ways other people have done it for cheaper than $136! Thanks, Jbay

They should be able to get a bike box with packing materials from their LBS for free (a few bucks at most).
If the bike is partially disassembled (bars/stem removed, front wheel removed, maybe back wheel or seat/post), it shouldn't require an overly large box. Usually FedEx Ground is about $35-$50 across the US from my experience.

It's all in the box size & insurance. I shipped Tobin's GHP Trix complete w/all other BS, insured for 10,000 for just under $100
Cut the damn box down as much as possible. Fed ex is no doubt the most efficient way in comparison to UPS, USPS & DHL unless you have a corporate account.
Most completes that I have sent have been under $40 skins & avg weight 35-50 lbs.

I shipped a tank of a bike from AZ to FL for around 40-45, sounds like the guy is jacking ya because he didn't get the price he wanted for it, or had it priced low to sell and is trying to make it up on the back end. Let me guess evil bay

Yeap, my bikes have all been under $50 with UPS using a 20" bike box. Only front wheel and stem needed to come off. If you go to a LBS and ask for a scrap box you might even get the the axle end caps and other neat thingies to keep parts from poking out through the cardboard.
However, I've heard that the 24" boxes fall under an oversize category with UPS and the shipping price goes up considerably. Can anyone confirm?

Some people believe the quotes from UPS and LBS's on having them ship it for you ie:box, packing and shipping. I've heard some nutty quotes. Most tanks that I've shipped were no more than $40. Get the box from lbs or toys r us or wal mart. Take the bike apart as much as possible. Put it in the box then cut it down to size. It's not so much the weight but how big the box is.

PEP is right. Make sure that you cut that box down as much as possible. I had to take mine bike home three times to cut an 1/8 of the box which saved me about $40
Complete bike from Wa to AZ cost me $55

Cost me 35.00 to ship a complete bike AND an extra set of wheels in 1 box. Package made the trip in 5 days via UPS Ground.

if you use retail shipping outlets like Mailboxes Etc, they charge you FULL retail with a premium.
you need to go to the UPS shipping desk directly, or use FedEx through Kinkos. ship ground, not air (obvious?).
stores like "WeShipYourShtForYou Express" make their money off the premium charge. don't fall for the okey doke.

Make it small I found was key-I don't remember what the dimensions were, but I asked in advance what size I needed to be and work around that. I shipped my cruiser to myself from Syracuse to Denver, it was about $55. -with me taking off the stem and front wheel and relocating them in the box. I left everything else intact. That same day I shipped my old racing buddy's 20" from Syracuse to Tampa for damn close to the same cost. That was from a UPS hub. Good luck.
I tried sending a Mountain Bike from SoCal to Michigan and I was getting quotes of up to $300. I tried USPS, UPS, FED-EX...Lowest I found was $175.
I went into my LBS (the same shop that gave me the box) and asked for advice and they told me to leave the box and $35 and they would send it out next day. Simple as that. A lot of shops will ship bikes for their costs since they do that all the time.

Just shipped my park bike (28 lb bike) via FedEx ground from CA to NJ with $500 insurance (though replacing it would more than that by a long shot), for $36. I just got a 20" bike box (in which had a come a cuddy little mountain bike) from my LBS and packaged it up with front wheel, bars, pedals and pegs removed.

DHL!!!!!!!!!! They are awesome and extremely friendly... I got a account online... THEY COME TO YOUR HOUSE!!!!! They bill me at the end of each month for what I ship. Usually around 25-35 for a complete bike.. Check them out. Definately worth it.
