yes , i was deflowered today .... in five years of die-hard collecting, eyeballing every bike i pass, every rummage sale, circling blocks to see bikes on the lawn or in a garage.... you guys kmow what i mean, i am just pulling in to the south outskirts of stoughton wisconsin (yes, sto-ton , wis-can-sin) and i see a family coming up the street for a bike ride, dad on a old chrome bmx bike, and were those white faded patterson pads ? what !! as i hit the brakes and pull into the church parking lot, mom and son pass me, dad had stopped in the middle of the road to throw aside a piece of lumber that had fallen from a truck or something. i stop him. quick glance and my head is spinning. really. i spot the chrome pr200 f/f/bars immediately , old but intact decals. full set of patterson pads, quite faded, chrome 7x wheelset with vintage philwoods ! single piece cranks with a phil spider, hadley bb., and orange shimno dx pedals ! really nice early dk stem is soon revealed as i pry back the neck pad. so i do the deed : do you want to sell it ? its a firm no ! he had it since 1984, and bought it new, raced it .... so i offer $300 cashon the spot just to test the waters. a firm no-way ! i respect the guy, and the fact he has kept it so long, so i dont try any more. i do however give him my name and numbers, "just in case" he ever has tough times, or a temporary loss of sanity. five years , no joke, i hope this is a turn of events, or one of those deals that come in threes !!

Yeah, I found a Pink Hutch trickstar in a garage yesterday. Really nice with white Tuffs. I won't tell you what kind of cranks were on it. I asked the guy if he would sell it 3 times and each time was a "No!"
My wife was upset because I wouldn't take a no the first 2 times he said it.
Oh well,
Mike

You never know.
It depends on how attached he is to the bike, and if he's watching eBay.
But I hope you get that call.
'Cause "score" posts are my favorite part of VBMX.com!
ps. Go ahead, Mike. Tell us what kind of cranks were on it.

I bought my 81 GT from a guy who was selling his sons bikes in a garage sale back in 1988. At the time I paid 50 bucks for the bike, I had my choice of the GT or a PK Ripper. The guy never sold the PK that day, so hear recently I went back to my old neighborhood and I swear that the PK was still hanging in his garage 15 years later. I saw the guy out and gave him my best pitch to get that bike. He would not let go of it because his son is now grown and has a 7 year old who he is giving it to. Plus his sons name is Peter and last name starts with a K (won't reveal name). So I did tell him of the fate of his other sons bike, which I have, he could not believe the interest in restoring, and thought it was awesome.

I'm amazed at how anyone "scores" these deals on these bikes. Granted I haven't been into collecting VBMX for as long as some of you, but I look at every garage sale I pass on a Saturday morning, look at kids riding their bikes, and I have yet to spot anything worth a damn. Maybe I just live in an area that's all dried up of BMX stuff??????? Anyway, keep digging up all those relics, guys!

Yeah, it is real interesting being on the other side of the coin, I have Hutch rider that I have built up to ride around, and I'm now finding that I'm riding it most afternoons after work for a bit of exercise...but the interesting part is how many times you get stopped, by old guys like 35 - 40 (um yeah I'm 37) and some guys try it on..Once I played dumb, and I was "like um this old thing nah it's not worth anything you can have it"...watched this dude's eyes light up..then I was like sorry mate..just kidding..I like riding it too much...Then you get the young guys at the track that have seen this old hutch stuff on ebay and they couldn't care about the bike...just what they could part it out for....
Then you just get the funny looks...and you know they are thinking....old dude let the past go!
Nope not yet!

Good story, Craig, and kudos for trying. I would have done exactly the same.

Hey Hoffman,
Keep looking! Your day will come. I was like you and could never find anything, and then all of a sudden I started to score in bunches. Now my garage is full of old rides and my kids always have friends over that like to ride them. I thought BMX was cool when I was a kid, but it means so much more now. Keep looking and good things will happen...guarenteed!

Yes they are out there. You just have to take it slow. Dont get yourself all worked up cause you cant find something. You'll find one. And hey, the fact that you didnt lowball the guy shows that your a decent person, that counts for alot when you collect anything....

I was going to my local old school bike shop with my kids and as we were crossing the street a dude rode past on a Moosegoose with KOS bars!!!
I thought I was the only one that rode old school bikes in public in my town

Maybe Craig will rub some of his BMX mojo off onto me, epecially since we have the same taste in bikes!
