I had to kill 45 minutes the other day as one of my appointments had a last minute change. I dropped by a little second hand shop and found this hanging in the back. At first, I thought, "Yellow Label Comp III, Shimano 600 Headset, Araya Hoops, Track Hubs with floating washers, I better grab this for the wheels, tires, hubs and headset and toss the rest in the scrap pile". But after taking a closer look at it, this sure seems to be quite the survivor from the early days of Fire-Roading (Gravity Mountain Biking).

The stem and bars seem to be factory, so it must have been quite the low slung 24/20. Looks like it had a double on the front at one time which would make it at least a 14 speed rig. The welds are simply beautiful and instead of parting it out, it looks like it might be a cool project.

The decals all say Velocitech Mountain Machine.

I tried to google it, but cannot find any information on this brand or model. Anybody ever see one of these or know anything about it?

That thing is cool. Try posting over at MTBR.com, in the vintage section. Some of the early MTB pioneers hang over there, maybe they can help.

LOOKS to be built for climbing. Or drag racing.

I was thinking the same thing. Hillclimbs were popular MTB events.

Narrow bars, water bottle cage, sounds like a climbing rig, but then, chain idler/tensioner and extra long chainstays ??????
What a strange one it is!

Even with all the extra support it still looks like it would snap in half if you got air and landed wrong.

Crazy but so cool.

This 1985 bike that was kind of ahead of it's time. Colorado has always been an "interesting" place...

Someone beat you to a lot of the extra original goodies , the leather seat , campy seat pole , ripped off the handlebars , 21 speed shifter , funky pedals & bash guard....

Seems they were popular to customise when you bought them new , so don't feel too bad about my previous comments on it missing good parts. This one has 3 water bottles & different bars.
