I just wanted to get the word out that Brett (BMX2112) is down for a little while. He flipped the gate last night resulting in a 9 stitches to his leg and a broken elbow. He said he was going to be laid up for a little while, but was enlisting some help to make sure everyone that bought from him get their items in a timely fashion.

So if you bought from BMX2112 either on here OS, or on Ebay please be patient....

Admin, please let this post stay up for a little while in order to get the word out.

Brett - you'll just have to sit in front of the computer instead of on a bike for a bit.....

Get well soon.

Gate flips = suck!
Jet Black
Get well soon Brett , good to see you are still willing to take care of biz & let people know that there is a problem , rather than just going quiet & turning up with some lameo excuse 3 weeks later , like a number of ebay sellers have done to me....Battlescars are part of earning your stripes & chicks love em.

Where you starting on a hill with a 70 degree slope in front of it , or did you just throw yor weight at the gate just a bit too early ?? Thats some serious carnage I never encountered bitd & I was always a _very_ agressive starter.

Gate flips are a good reason to bring back manual gate drops using a real person. Hearing the same voice checking to see that everyone was ready & sorted out , then hearing that same voice chant out his own personal starting mantra & stepping on that trigger & sear mechanism , was the best.
It made racing BMX bitd much more personal , gave it character + gave a few Dad's at every track a way to be more involved with their kids sport , rather than the monotonous drone you hear now.

Anyone who raced at Metro West in Sydney during the early 1980's will know _exactly_ what I am taliking about.

I used to run the gate from time to time at the locals here. There's nothing worse than a gate malfunction though, regardless of the machinery, you're always the first to get blamed. Generally, by a pack of angry, bloody, bmx goons!

Bounced back quick Brett. Exercise those typing digits for now.

I hope your feeling better soon Brett.

The only thing that sucks about bmx, getting hurt ! Look after your self and get better.

Jet Black, for better or worst-I think for better-BMX racing isn't just a kids sport anymore. I like to see it as respected and taking seriously as other forms of cycling are and it being in the Olympics has established that. Manual gates have gone the way of rubber band starts. Now how fast the gate reacts/falls is a question. Ironically, it was not a kid who flipped but an adult in this case. I would imagine that older teenagers and adults is far more vulnerable to gate flips than kids. Some of these gates I understand fall slower than gravity due to the lifting mechanism for it? Also the angle of the starting platform could be a factor. A large rider literally throwing his weight around aggressively is more prone to this. However, you have to be aggressive out of the gate to win, so I don't know how to solve this other than say making elbow guards mandatory long with helmets and mouth guards/full face helmets. What are the modern day equivalent of the Haro armguards I had in the 80's (and did those JT V1000 shoulder guards actually work?)?

Sure people, kids even, get hurt at the gate, but they can get hurt anywhere on the track. The radder the track, the more likely a serious injury occurring, I don't think people here would like to see tamer tracks. We have been complaining about that sine Corona shutdown in '81. It was after all the concern for kids safety though the insurance companies which resulted in the "lame" tracks of the '80s. Remember the NBL's no doubles policies back in '88 (And the ABA's taking advantage with its "Double the jumps, double the fun" ad campain)? We don't want to go back to that. Hell, I could love to see the return of downhill tracks like Weinhart Mountain and Corona (That would truely bring back the sidehacks also I think. I don't think it is coincidence that sidehacks died at the same time downhill tracks did).

In any case going back to manual gates are not the answer anymore than going back to the one-pedal start is. National and international races and even many locals are too big for that and you would need a lot of starters, defeating the purpose of using a human starter since you would have to get use to each of them and they probably wouldn't work the practice sessions anyway and you need to have electronic gates on the local level to adequately prepare you for the national and international races and I don't think the UCI is going to go back the the manual gate under any circumstances.

And Oh yeah get well quick Brett (BMX2112), least I forget. You have something in common with Andy Patterson in 1983 (flipped gate and broke his foot at a local race in practice when the gate came down an instant later) and Gary Ellis (had a gate come down on his toe at the 1996 UCI World Championships IIRC). You are among the greats! Me? I never flipped the gate-----and I rarely got great starts either!

Hey Brett, did you get those bikes broke down?
Oldtimer1980s
BMX2112, now that is what I am against; asphalt starting runs! I guess maintaining dirt would be higher maintenance, but in this case safety does out weigh convenience in this instance. Bad enough to flip onto dirt, but asphalt? I had enough of that skateboarding!

well i got the bad news today, i have to have surgery on friday to put screws in the elbow. and then rehab. can someone tell me what little screws cost 350.00 each?? with no insurance and being out of work right now, this is painful in many ways.

That last post is almost IDENTICAL to what i am in the middle of, but with my shoulder instead.
We don't know each other but after reading that last post i thought i'd join in.
Back in Feb' i crashed at my local track during gates one night and poped my shoulder out when i bailed on a double in the first straight. It went back in as i was sitting up but a couple of weeks later an ultra scan revieled that i had torn the tendon clean off the bone. This is when I got the bad news that surgery had to happen to fix it. Surgeon says, "up to 12 months off work" and i go into shock! I, like you , have no insurance.
But then i remember, i'm a member of this association called Bicycle Victoria( not a BMX sanction ) here in Australia. I was refered to it years ago buy a friend and forgot about it, just automaticly renewed every year. Now, i don't know if there's anything like this in the US but check this out;
Membership includes "crash insurance", which covers you for any bicycle related accident as long as you where wearing a helmet.
85% of ALL out of pocket med expenses are covered AND 85% of your last financial years earnings! That's right, income protection! I did a ton af overtime last year so 85% of that is actually more than my minimum take home pay! And it lasts for up to two years!
Not bad for just being a member!
Like i said, i don't know if there's anything like this over there but it's certainly worth investigating.

And yeah, 3 screws at AU$250 each! Go figure.

Bump for an update.

WOW.. Brett sorry to hear, get well soon bro...
BMX2112
well i'm off...be back in time for dinner.
BMX2112
the update...

well i still have my arm and the surgery went ok but not as planed. their were 2 bone fragments that they were going to screw back in place but when they attemped to do this one of them broke apartinto 2 pieces. so they had to extract all the bone chips and were unable to use the screws to put it all back together. after they cleaned everything out they then shaved down the bones so they would fit and fuse back together. hopefully this will work and it will heal up ok, if not they will have replace the whole elbow.
thanks again for all the support and well wishes guys.

Brett, wishing you a speedy recovery.
Best wishes,
Shaun
Monster-Robot
How's the elbow....still all yours?
BMX2112
yeah good news, because the bone chips were removed the doc told me all is good. they shaved down the rotater cuff so it was round again. the break was on the end of the bone so after the pieces of bone were removed there were no bone breakage to heal. I am out of the splint now and doing my theropy to regain full use of the arm again. so hopefully i will be back on the pedals strong in a month or two. it is still very sore but i am on the way back to recovery, plus i got a 4 inch scar for the chicks to dig.

peace, brett
