Was this during the ABA Summer Tour of the same year?

Gold Cup in 1979? Unless the ABA did something just in the southwestern region I don't think the ABA Gold Cup series started until 1981/2 or so.

ABA action newspaper november issue 1979
It was listed on the front page near the bottom
southwest gold cup championship Nov.23,24,25
sponsored by DG..Above it was a race photo
from the SE-ABA corona mini national. And you
are correct that ABA started the gold cup series
nation wide in 81.But until then it was only in
the west. The first gold cup was in Cali somewhere
sponsored by yamaha in 1974 i think.And i think
it was nbl not aba?Anyways just trying find anything
else about the race or who here was at the race.
sorry for any confusion.

Me and a buddy of mine made that same tour in 1979. We started a few days earlier and caught up with the NBA Summer tour at a few races in the Midland/Odessa area, then headed over to Amarillo to catch up with the ABA Summer tour, then followed it in it's entirety. At the end of the "official" ABA Summer tour, we made a couple more races, one was the race I assume you were referring to in Chandler, than we made another race in Las Vegas, which might have been an NBA race, but I am not sure.

We would have been 18 and 16 years old during the tour, so not sure if we would have lined up against one another or not. I do know however, it was the best summer vacation I ever had. Being out on our own traveling across the USA was quite an experience for two young kids trying to figure out what we wanted to do in life.
