I've been reading the book "How to win bicycle motocross" printed in 1975 and it shows a pic of Stu with the comment that he retired in 1975??

Ummmm I think he had a BIG comeback then!!!!!

What brand bike is that in the picture?

I love it when they cannot spell Thomsen correctly. I believe BMX Plus did this on an early 80's cover!

Stu is riding a Dan Gurney there.

"Bicycle Motocross News" was notorious for constantly misspelling his name!

As for his retirement(s) it seemed to be a running joke of his like Scot Breithaupt, running joke about how old he is:

''Q: "What about rumors that you are getting ready to retire?"

A: "Just rumors. I may not race much anymore, but I will still like it very much." ---Bicycle Motocross News August 1975

''BMX Plus!: "When you were interviewed by BMX PLUS! last year you said you were going to retire at the end of 1979. In fact you said you were going to retire every year since 1976. Are you going to tell us the same thing this year?"

Thomsen: (Laughing) "I always say that. You know me."----''BMX Plus!'' January 1981

When he won the NORA Cup the first time in 1982 on the occasion BMXA said to paraphrase that he would hang up his spurs by the end of 1979 IIRC Check the issue it is in Bicycle Motocross Action January 1980 IIRC.

Then when he finally retired in early 1987 he got upset with BMX Plus! for not making a big deal out of it. BMX Plus! responded that they didn't take him seriously in the hope that he would change his mind! LOL! I forgot the issue that appeared in but I would guess very late 1987 and early 1978.
