Full Version: What software do you use to inventory your bike collection?

I would think a customized database would be best. If you have a good one, would appreciate a copy via email: martin@martin-bike.com

I just don't have the time right now to set one up. Excel is fine but would look much funkier customized with buttons, forms, icons and photos.

Had a look at Quicken inventory manager. You can attach photos but doesn't seem to have many fields that fit well.

What solution are you using?

Build a website - you could also build one using frontpage and store it on your C; drive. You can add buttons, detailed pictures and any other information to it. You could build a public space for others to see if you wanted but use a secure site if you wanted to keep collection private with passwords... Only if you wanted it on the web though. This way you can download it anywhere in the World.

I haven't inventoried my bike stuff, but that's a good idea. I use a software called Antique Tracker that I bought on eBay for fifteen bucks or so for one of my relatives home inventory. It was designed with the antiques collector in mind, so it allows you to list by catagory and sub-catagories, and you can also upload photos and include descriptions. I can't remember if the field verbage is customizable, but if it was you could customize it to fit the BMX stuff perfectly. It is a very basic and easy-to-use software.

I just read a blip on Consumer Reports about a free home inventory software that you can download on the net. I don't remember the link, but if you Google "home inventory software" you might find something for free. Check with your insurance agent too. He might be able to offer some suggestions.

It wouldn't be too hard to toss together a database with an ASP front end and generate web pages of the inventory on the fly...

sounds like a fun little project actually

God, how much stuff do you guys have???

Aaaahhhhh . . .

rumblerdave beat me to it.
So my next question is, do you make a living from this? Or is it simply your passion?

Not ridiculing, just asking.
Please enlighten us.

Definitely not a living - my eBay feedback shows zero on the sale side.

It's more obsessive compulsive compounded by the fact that my stash is in a different country to where I live and I only get to play once or twice as year. No wife, no kids, no common sense contributes I'm sure.

Going home to play in 2 weeks . . .

Martin,

What level of inventory to you want to store against each bike? Would set fields such as heasdset, cranks, blah blah blah work or would you want custom per bike?

We had delayed that site we were building but now I'm out of hospital and heading back to work it's kicking off development this week.

It will have full galleries, auto-sizing of pics, etc to keep it consistent so let me know.

This is the part we're finalising at the moment so good time to let me know what you're after.

Judging by the size of your collection stored in your shed Waza, you probably don't think about anything else!

Cool, thanks for the link Waza. Vista does some of this now but that's a whole other sensitive thread right there.

Martin makes his living by robbing banks (legally) so to speak. Money is not the object , it's the continual aquisition of objects that is the problem.
His collection of BMX "stuff" including completed bikes has gone beyond Passion , beyond Addiction , he has a serious sickness for owning all thing new cool & 1980's retro.
We are doing the best we can to help tone down Martin's rampant self indulgent & destructive money spending binges , unfortunately he ducks in & out of Australia very quickly without warning to maintain & monitor his stash here , leaving us very little time to lure him into an intervention , in order to help.

It's rumored that he has many safe houses world wide to keep all his collectable goods stored & in constant rotation from one place to another to keep them safe , his last known position was in a heavily fortified retreat he owns somewhere off the coast of Dubai.

We want to help you Martin , we also want some of your spare parts......

ACGTO,

Standard fields would be fine - not a per bike list but rather, a set of fields for each component. e.g.:

- brand
- model
- year
- colour
- size
- date of purchase
- cost
- seperate shipping cost
- current market value
- associated project
- category
- sub-category
- notes
- location
- unique ID
- where purchased
- purchased from
- contact email of seller
- photo attachment
- keeper/to sell field
- date of sale
- sold to
- contact email of buyer
- sale price

Then you can run automatic reports by build, by year to see what appropriate parts you may have for a prospective build . . . I have a million other ideas.

JB, LOL. I WANT you to have some of my spare parts . . .

See how much we care , Martin , I double posted the situation.

sounds like a Great idea...but i think you would end up crying yourself to sleep for a few days knowing how much you have spent. haha!

For a guy to only see his collection once a year (or maybe a little more than that) he has one HELLVA collection!

I also will take a set of profile pads and a set of black/gold quadangle pads.....

here is my address!

LOL!

Thanks JB, I'm touched.

Actually, I do have a spare set of original Profile pads for trade.

Jon, I've got a spreadsheet that tracks most things right now. My shipping costs are cringe material.

So nobody has created a custom database yet? Looks like I'll have to get one done and share it.
