I have seen Sumo Wheels on E-Bay, but do not actually remember them. When did they come out? They are cheaper that Araya or Ukai, so my guess is that they were lower end. They do look good.

Yes lower end... softer metal as well

Late 80's - early 90's (I think) ???

Being a wheel builder I should know but I never really built them much.... Z

Thanks,
I left in the late 80's, came back in the early 90's. I must of missed them. So they would not go on an older Goose or Hutch.

I bought a DB Assault in '92 to try and relive my 80's BMX days and it has Sumo rims on it.

I have a couple sets and have had no problems. I dont know much about the history of the sumo. I think they are a decent alternative when your watching the $$.

I have bought 4 NOS sets in differant colors, for about 60.00 a set and are a great deal doller for doller.

I have 2 sets of the Sumo's. There just 7x copies, however they are a little narrower than the Araya's...They look it anyway.

I've hammered on them alot and there about as durable as the Araya's. There just single walled rims and compared to today, there pretty cheesey..

When you spin the rims I have you can see the seem kinda "hobble" up and down (slightly)

Hope this helps

I've had a set--they're fine for vintage bikes that you're not going to hammer on. M2M is the guy who sells built sets on eBay, and he builds good stuff for prices you can't beat. I mean, if you've got the scratch to pay through the nose for Arayas, do it. If not, the Sumos look cool.

I think its M2phatwheels isn't it?
pquinnbmx
for some reason there are a bunch from a seller on long island, coincidentally enough

That's M2Mphatwheels. I've bought a few sets for my builds. Built nice and you can get 'em with colored spokes and all, and for the price they really can't be beat. Built well (said that already) and a whole wheelset costs less than just the rims for some 7X's.
Sumos came stock on a few entry-to-mid level bikes back in the day, like the Pro Raider had 'em for a while I think.

they were around the same time as Araya 7x in the early/mid 80s --- they had small quater sized adverts in BMXA and PLUS

Thanks Guys,
I think I will pull the trigger on buying a set to complete a build.

Your right it is M2Mphatwheels. He's cool too. I had a flange on the hub basically fold- in the center causing a hop and he said keep the wheel and he sent another for nothing.... Very cool guy
