I'm not sure why and maybe I'm not alone but I can't seem to keep any of my builds. I see guys on here who have collected bikes for years and have large collections. I usually have 2-3 projects going at all times but soon after I complete a restoration I'm already looking for my next Holy Grail. I don't sell to pay for the next, I just think the thrill of the build is more fun than the finished bike. Currently building a Sting, Skyway T/A XL and a Diamond Back Pro from 81". All bikes I had in the past and always wanted to find and build up again. Am I doomed or just one of many? Thanks.

I told my friend the other day that theese bikes are like when somebody has their dead dog stuffed. You look at and say there it is. but you don't take it out to play.

Its just like BMX. Win and you dont quite. You get back up on the gate and try again. Each lap your going for the feeling of taking a turn just right, getting over a jump just perfect and maybe the win. Then do it over.
Your not just a collector of BMX bikes, you are a BMXr.

People, including myself, always love to picture that finishing of the project in their minds, be it a bike, car , motorcycle, RC car, or house. You see it everyday with everything that is considred a hobby, call it motivation. Yeah we are doomed............

Your probably right Rev. I should just go ride my Shadow IM cruiser and fade away. Wait didn't you want that one too? Trade everything for that sweet Huffy Rocket you've got stashed. Cr@p there I go again! Looking for the next one already!

You are on the right path, collect them, build them, sell what you can live without.

I don't get attached to my bikes either. Not being practical for me to have a large collection ($), I just "rotate my stock" every once in a while, so I get to enjoy some different bikes now and then.

My theory is that a good portion of the fun is trying to find all the right parts, trying to get everything looking as close to new as possible, and then building it up.
However, I'm not building museum bikes either. I build my to ride so I can continue to enjoy once they're completed. Not that they won't be very nice when I'm done with them, I just won't spend any astronomical amounts of money on parts or frames. I don't want the potential loss of value to keep me from wanting to ride it.
I'm just starting out in this hobby, so I can't really say that I'll be selling off bikes just because they're "finished." I'm sure when it comes down to it though, If I see something I really want, and don't have the cash for, something will go up for sale.

That's a different take on it than I have for sure. I'm pretty limited in storage and the things I'm working on (3 bikes total) are mementos that I can't imagine selling. My thinking is more like "OK, I have to make sure I build something I really want to have" and "just build a few then stop" (yeah right huh?) The problem is: one bike part is starting to lead to an idea for an entire bike! Sucked in...

Just remembered, there is ONE bike that I'd have any sentimental attatchment to. My old Trick Star from BITD.
I blew it when I sold it back then. In favor of a mountain bike. A real nice mountain bike, but...still. Actually, if I remember correctly I think I traded the thing in at the bike shop! And freestyle was kinda "out" by then--around '90 or '91 so I can't imagine I got much for it. Hindsight...
Well I'm babbling. Point is, besides THAT one, bikes are just bikes to me, and I've got wandering eyes! I always run into stuff I'd like to have.
I enjoy the thrill of the build as well.
And if I ever get my TS back, I'm never gonna let it go again!
