I was a big fan of DG way back when. I have never gave any thought to restoring or collecting old bikes, other than a couple that meant a lot to me. My DG was my favorite as far as how it looked, and how light it was. But, never liked how it rode. Being young, I got rid of it and moved on to the Geese.

Just the DG Jacket on the Suzuki was cool!

I even painted my helmet to look all Factory like!

The DG as it started out. (I think Mom JUST changed the wallpaper not long ago…)

The DG in its later stages

Anyway, this weekend at our Old School Meets New School event, a friend of mine brought his DG frame (which I didn’t even know he had)

This would be Brad Apold helping with the displaying of it….

At the end of an already GREAT weekend... it went home with me! Compliment’s of Rodney Byrnes.

ROD, I can not thank you enough. I know I have said it several times, but still am in LaLa Land even today! THANK YOU SO MUCH! You are AWESOME!

The ID part.

Being young and just wanting to race, I never knew much about DG’s frames and what I was riding other than I just wanted to RACE!

So, if someone can give me a little input that would be great!

Its a DG racer-1 if my memory serves me... about a 77-78... anyone?

Mark -

Is that "DG 126 118"? If so, given the Euro BB, Square Bridge and intermittent gusset weld, you have a:

DG1 Jeff Bottema Frame from December of 1976 and the 118 frame. Nice find. Check the ultra thin drop outs. They made them slightly thicker later on.

Hit me up as I've redone Seat tube and rear triangle decals. Jody Cagle has Blue prism gusset decals. JPBMXFOOL might have another HT decal.

Awesome info Ben, we talked about the thin drop outs this weekend. That frame is incredible and hopefully Mark can pull it together as a nice complete.
BenOr
Very few survived. Ken Pliska has a 12 76 frame. But most broke. Either DG forks or Nickel Redlines are correct. Look at Randy from AZ's DG1. Those parts would be perfect on that bike.

Used 7B's with Blue Powder. Not "epoxy", but Primary blue like Tim Cooks DG 2.

Dura Ace Cranks, Shimano Cheap hubs, AShtabula stem with bars and post powder same as the hoops.

Thanks Ben! That is the correct SN#, and some VERY thin dropouts as well. The Decals I already have worked out, but thanks!

This is going to be a next winter build project hopefully. But for now, she's sitting right here nxt to me waiting to be cleaned up a little.

Interestingly enough, I had to ask Brad ^^^ what I had on it 30 years ago, he actually remembered! So, hopefully I can get fairly close to what I had then.
B. Apold
Mark, I forgot about a few different versions you had. I was close on the DG-1 or racer-1, but didn't realize the JB was kind of the same frame as a DG1. cool info. Frames like that are not to be had here in the upper mid west. BMX didn't really get kick'n into high gear until 80-ish and by then DG wasn't the bike to really have (via SE, Hutch, GT, bmx-prod, etc.).

Mark, those 74-80 blue Redline forks I bought would look stellar on that DG.... (cough-cough)... agree that chrome would look better or white... easy fix though.

Remember there are two sizes of gusset decals. Your's are the earlier less rounded style. Art29 has nice decals, but are for the newer frames.

Speechless! That is beyond cool MC.

Rod continues to impress me as one cool MN mofo.

Mark, You have given back in a bunch of ways. I believe in keeping the cycle of giving in motion. It will always do a full circle in the end. Thanks for all of the kind words. Ben, the Texas Cruiser it's a great ride. Thanks all.
Paul Springer
Rodney, you are one class act

Yeah, that seat post down tube looked kind of big for you...

Mark, I have the correct gusset dacals in blue or gold. I also have a head tube decal. You should hit Mr.Or up for the seat and rear tri decals though. See you down the rode.

Hi All,
I think we need to find that "all things DG" thread again.

AS far as i knew (according to my 1977 DG catalog) the "DG racers" (Model 1, 2 & 3) all had cut-out gussets.

The solid (stamped) gusset was either a 'rooster' or other model? wasn't there a 'bantem' or something ???
OR did they simply re-release this new 'stamped' design also under the 'racer' name too????

Can anyone correct me on this?

I have a very similar frame to the yellow one above, except my brake bridge is round, and USA sized BBset, with 'stamped' gussets.

Thanx in advance,
Marty.
B. Apold
I remember something about that too Marty.
Mr.BMX
I'm more concerned about the fascination they had with small farm birds....yikes.... ;-)

Yet i don't recall the DG chicken, chickadee or sparrow-hawk ;-)
BenOr
The cut out gusset lasted for about 3 minutes. CHeck the rear triangle on the cut out gussets modes as well. DG2 in the catalog is like the stamped frames, but DG1 is much different.

My opinion – Chuck Robinson left Webco for DG. He used the same manufacture (as Webco) for the non gusset and cut out gusset frames. They broke. He went to Green Duck, who originally was a contract manufacture for DG on frames. They made the stamped frames and beyond. This was very early on. They include square brake bridge and intermittent welds on old style logo, through round brake bridge with solid bead welds on more rounded logo gusset. Around 1980 or so, I am told DG sold the BMX Group off to Green Duck. They moved to San Diego and Piant and Friday rode for them. ZF1 was born. 1982 RIP DG BMX.
BenOr
Rooster was just a complete kit bike with a DG3 frame.
Mr.BMX
Hey Brad, i just noticed your 'location' .... Surf Punks rule mate ;-)
B. Apold
Mr bmx... they do indeed. Gotta see this then

hahaha cool stuff, fairly raunchy for it's day ;-)
Guest200901
ROD- I'll talk to you about the headtube decal soon!
Mr.BMX
Looking back thru some old DG ads i found today, looks like my frame is a ZF-1.

It also shows the DG "Banty" which is just a 16" ZF-1 styled bike for the little ones.

Still digging .....
