With the new BMX track in Omaha getting started for the season this last week, we have some old schoolers coming out the the woodwork with their kids and their old bikes.
Most recently a transplant from Stillwater to Omaha showed up with his boys. One was riding his mid-80s Hutch (repainted frame and forks) with GT square armed cranks, GT hubs with Mongoose rims (the ones with the holes), red aluminum powerlite pro size bars, DK stem and a well worn crazy chain.
It was well used and enjoyed and nothing was even remotely 'mint.' For that item, you had to take a look at what his other son was riding. No idea on the year, but I am thinking late 80s. It was a box stock Haro Group 1 Team Issue - it still have the reflectors and chain guard! The only real blemish was some surface rust from sitting in someone's attict/basement for the last 20 years. And get this: He found it at a local Goodwill for... wait for it.... $9.99! I just about fell off my bike.

I picked up a stock 77 goose for $10 and then soled it to Ken P. for $75...... and get this. It was the same as the one that I bought in 77 for $165.00 from the late Bob Barcy….
How dumb could I be.... Z

I went down to our local track and skatepark yesterday, they are right next to each other. i met up with a freind and VBMX member there. I rode the track for a while. My 2 young boys and I are going to race this year. I havent raced since around 92.
They were working on the track for the first race of the year this coming friday. I couldn't believe how many people were at the track. i noticed alot of older guys with their kids. Looks like lots of dads are going to give racing a try ith their kids this year. i also noticed that there were a few old school bikes and I over heard lots of guys talking about their old school stuff they had. I talked with one guy and we told each other about the bikes we had. I told him how I had been riding since the mid 70's. Everytime he would mention a bike he had he would ask me if I knew what he was talking about. I got thinking he thought that i didn't have a clue about old BMX bikes even after I had told him about the bikes I have. I asked him if he were a member on VBMX and he said no he only checks out BMX museum, so I said nice chatting and rode off. I don't care for BMX museum. Vintage BMX sure has become more popular.

It's more fun being the sitee when riding a "vintage BMX" rather than sighting a Vintage BMX.
Getting cheers of "old school" from a bunch of guys , half your age on modern BMX's , who's keen eyes have seen the tuffs & chrome rolling & shining along in the sun , is the ultimate in 2 wheel recognition.
If you got the time you can swing over & have a chat to them & compare bikes , tricks , engineering etc between now & then. Same passion , differnt era.
Any shiny early 1980's Vintage BMX bike will always stand out in a crowd , especially to those who were there & those who remember they wanted to be there....
Matt & my VBMX bikes are our 2 wheeled muscle cars.
