Mikko - actually ran the idea past the wife for this Sat. didn't go too good and calculated gas at $120 to get there and back @ $2.88/gal. The real deal breaker is the contractor for my house says he is actually going to come and look at the stuff on my 1 year punch list........5 months after getting it. I have been attempting to get this done for months, I cannot miss that! Want to hit another one of these if possible. In Mankato, is there still a bike shop located a few blocks from the track? Back in 1994-1995 I would swing in and talk bikes and even go shoot pool with a younger shop owner after close.

Am a little behind on this thread!

Next up, we have Bill "Big Rig" Nelson!

I knew who Bill was at the end of my racing era in the early 80's, and was one of the 1st of the old schoolers I became re-aquainted again with last summer.

Bill has reignited his flame for BMX of the last few years, and has gotten his kids involved as well.

This was last years State Championship, where he pulled down the BIG #1!

This was Bill when he was just a Pup!

Bill is his Ffffffrrreeeestyle stage.....

2. Where was your hometown when you raced?
Mankato

3. What was the reason that you started?
Looked like it was fun and to keep myself out of trouble

4. What was the Highlight of you’re career?
A picture of me racing appearing in the BMXer last year and #1 plate last year- a dream of mine since high school. But the most important highlight of all is being able to race with my family!

Scheels Allsports out of Mankato, and the local bike shop

6. What was the highest State rank you held?
BITD #6
7. When did your BMX career end and why?
last race June of 1985 and quit because my friends had stopped racing.

9. What is something that you learned from BMX?
sportsmanship, comaradery, and HAVING FUN.

10. Tell us one funny story that happened during your career?.
from BITD Rob Butterfield, Nathan Benjamin and I convinced Ben Richards to put Ben Wa on his leathers for the entire season- He never did figure it out-haha.
From my more recent career - the first race back at 400"-looking like the circus bear on a bike.

11. What was your favorite bike from back in the day?
Patterson 24"

12. Who were your BMX heroes?
Stu Thompson, Greg Hill, Clarence Perry, Gary Ellis and Pistol Pete.

Yeah, nice going El Steefo Paddy Cakes.

I've got "your" Steekers just like that for the weekend, sitting right here keeping them warm on my office chair as I type....

Have a fun weekend OSers and keep the BSing to a Minimum. OSers tend to BS too much!

Speaking of BSing, is Troy or Marv going to be there this weekend?
Paul Springer
Manning, you will be missed this weekend but we will definetly catch up with you soon! Have you whacked the ball yet (golf)? I am looking forward to Rockford, your going to flip when you see this gathering. Tell your pops I said Hi!
Jeff Manning

That is a personal question, but if I get to know you a little better I will let you in on my private life..HaHa

About Golf.. I almost went last sunday, had a tee time and it started to down pour a 1/2 hour before tee off. I do have a really good gig in line for Craguns on Gull that I'll let you know about later!!
Jeff Manning
Where is the Conley interview?

I'm wondering if that guy even owned a BMX bike let a lone raced BITD. I think it was all staged!
B. Apold
good point Jeff, where IS the MS interview? I've know Mark for a long time (1975) and he forever changed me that day in Austin.... I only saw pictures of bikes and riders like him.

Tonight should be fun!

Isn't Pauli's B-day coming up? 41 and over class should be a big class over the next year..No more complaining from the Moe-ster...

Great interview Bill !!! its good to see your still so into the sport and still a great rider indeed.. Stay with it man!!
Bill, you should be the winner on the biggest looser, because I still can't believe how much weight you dropped in such a short time... Its amazing to think of you back in 05 when I raced you guys and you had the 26" CW bike, and now its like Holy crap.... amazing!! whatever your doing, its working for ya.

Bill, I love that picture of you getting your State #1 plate reaching for the sky. It was great catching up with you last weekend at the track. Super interview! Bill was THE first guy I talked with last Summer and he got me back into racing as an old koot. I went to Elk River's redline cup last summer and met Bill & Moe out there and they put the pressure on me. Hope to see you again soon Bill

Pauli, and I don't get any credit for saddle'n ya up again. )

True dat Brad, I found you on VBMX and stalked you until you allowed me to see your collection and it has been love ever since.

Bill, I remember hitting up the Mankato race a few years ago.. Seems forever that I seen anybody from back in the day. I was kind of worried for about a decade, that all these old racers from the 80's were gone forever. Now alot are back, and it pretty stoke to show up and not be the only old schooler out there. Bill I have a feeling i'll be racing you soon.. so take it easy on me.

Just a very short and quick witted, 1st of the OSNS series report ...(because I am tired, and believe it or not..... not crabby now!)

Awesome night! It went in the direction I was truly hoping for. Had at least two people come up and share stories about racing back in the 80's, and one (Todd Hall) even brought a few photos and gave me! Was quite a few kids hanging around the table and watching video clips asking questions and showing interest as well.

Had some great bikes around as well! I'll do a photo post at the end of the weekend of some of these as well as a few extra shots.

All I can say is THANK YOU all for helping out and helping the 1st day get off to a great start! Am really looking forward to the rest of the weekend! Mikko, you were missed!

Doug, Matt, and the rest did a great job making us all feel welcome! Thanks!

The entertainment end....

Doug decided in his time of midlife crisis he would shave his head and get a tattoo (He said the chicks dig the bald look)

Rod, was great getting to hangout with you tonight after the gathering. But hope you made your stops on the way home...

Scott WBL ...hope to see you around, and racing this summer as well! (got lots more pics of his rides to share)

Bradly, Always good to see you! and nice to meet the family (Don't be getting that DG all stinky though....)

Springer hope the 41st birthday was a good one! Thanks for helping out!

Great night! Most fun I've had there and didn't even have to ride a bike. Thanks for the beer birthday boy (Pauli)
Thanks Mark, Rain, and rockstar son... Nice kids ya got there Mark.

I scored some old 78-79 Redline forks (in blue) from Kristine, can't wait to stick them on....

I hope to make Sunday's race to hang out.. I only race Nationals
Paul Springer
What a blast, thanks to everyone for a great time! We are only 1/3 of the way through the weekend and it has been sweet. Rod, that DG w/ Bottema forks was sweet. Apold posse was out in full force, great job Hannah (12) on her first race ever. You did an awesome job! See you guys at the track...
B. Apold
Yes, Hannah did a great job on her first race. I posted on the other thread about Hannah and forgot to post it here were it really matters.. Having two threads gets confusing. Anyway, Hannah is happy with how she did.

Pauli, Hope ya had a great birthday!
B. Apold
Mark, where's the pics baby?
King of Pipeline
More pics. Please.. I need hourly updates.
WBL BMXer - aka Chucky
I'm missing you guys already. Mark, I can't say it enough; you are doing an awesome job. Thanks for taking the photos. I can't wait to see the rest.

It's amazing that in the first night, two new OSer's 're-introduced' themselves to the group, one of which lived not far from me and raced against me. Awesome!!!

Rod, very nice bikes. Don't let Brad hang around that DG too long.

Brad, it was fun watching your daughter race. She really did a great job her first time out.

Pauli, what can I say. If you had a better gate, maybe you could have beaten that 17 year old kid. JK! It was fun celebrating your big birthday.

More to say, but I'm out of time. Talk to you guys soon.

looks like the series got off to a great start. congrats to mark and everyone involved. looking forward to seeing more pics.
B. Apold
Mom, Well-I don't like to brag

Ya Scott-WBL, excellent Redline man, wow! That thing was just sparkles. Oh and the DG, jeeeeezzzz... Those blue Redline forks I bought would look stunning on there.

Hannah had a good time I think. I'm trying to let her know the barn is really a hard track to race on IF your skills are lacking. She hasn't really ever riden on dirt. Her real bike is some Target Mongoose 24" multi-speed tank, so hop'n on a 20" wasn't easy either... New bike coming soon, but she must show long term interest or the chrome tank will have to do.

Sounds like you Boys and Girls (Old Farts) are having a good time! I'm missing having that permanent smile on my face where my cheeks start to hurt.

Save me some Cake Springer! By the looks of the pics it seems to be a good showing!

Are the NSers interested in whats going on? How was the moto count? More pictures?
Guest200901
Quick update......Sleeping in Springers basement tonight, bad internet connection because his snoring (2 floors up) is causing net outages citywide....

BTW----PAUL and Mrs. Paul (not the fishstick lady though)Thanks for the hospitality and iced tea and crumpets(sp) tonight.

In short, I'm F#^%$^%^&%^&in tired, lots of pics and race vid footage to go through once I get back to Porktown USA tomorrow night.

GREAT DAY THOUGH!!!! El Mikko was there today! My boys picked up a few bad manners and habbits from "El Mikko" and other so called "OLD FRIENDS" that seemed to carry on the rest of the day with them. It's gonna take at least a month of counseling and grounding days to make them understand. "THEY WERE NOT GOOD ROLL MODELS" to be following.

Other…Since Springer was in bed now, I thought you all should have a quick tour of his “personal bathroom”....

Is this guy dedicated you ask? Ummm, I think sooo! Checkout his glasses!

Didn’t care to pickup his reading material and page through it though (given the fact of it's location)….

Do ya thing the guy loves golf?

Lots of pics and things to post hopefully tomorrow night.

Thanks again and again to everyone who has supported this!

.oO(can't wait to see what springer says when he sees this. oh and, note to self, if mark should ever visit, remember to lock up EVERYTHING!)
Paul Springer
Alright, you busted me. My real real loves are bmx and golf and you found my think tank where all my strategizing takes place. Today I am going to have to spend a little extra time in there, especially before Conley hops in the shower if ya know what I mean. If you think he is Mr. Crabs now...

Double points racin today baby, time to get amped up!

.oO *I better call the locksmith later today to get the house re-keyed*
