Great stuff as usual. I remember Brainerd well. My first win came at that track.
Brad, I'm with you on the open face helmets. Everyone had there own style with different visors, mouth guards, face masks. It was cool.

Today’s special guest Sean Miland! (Decker Rat Sean)
I have known Sean and his family for YEARS! All great people, and were a true BMX family. Sean’s parents, “for some reason†trusted me enough to want me to take him to Oregon to a national back in 80something. Little did they know that I would chain him to the video games, with a bunch of change while I cruised the streets of Clackamas with Dave C.
Sean and I tracked each other down through VBMX last summer, only to find out we live in the same town. Since that day, Sean could be found grazing though my garage, sifting through old BMX crap, and finding things I never knew I had. Had to change the locks though, because I was getting photos emailed to me with pictures of him going through boxes that looked familiar……
Here is Milo of time past with a little ink time and Team Tahoe!….

Locks were changed shortly after this photo....

Name:Sean Miland
1. When did you start racing?
I think it was 1975 but it could have been 1976. Those early years are a blurr of Stingray part swaps and concrete downhill banzai runs....in other words the best of times! In Austin Mn's old Eastside Rydjor/railroad yard track. Name another track in the world that used elements of a abandoned railroad loading dock?
2. Where was your hometown when you raced-
Austin Mn- I raced the Eastside concrete jungle and the Riverside ABA track. I never raced the 79/80 Wildwood track.
3. What was the reason that you started?
A friend, Randy Capretz told me about it. I was 7 yrs old. I dont even think my parents knew I raced the 1st race-I think I snuck my dads helmet and forged the parent waiver. My dad Larry Miland was always into Honda minibikes when I was growing up but he would never let me get into MX when I was 5/6/7 years old. So, BMX fell naturally into the spot. I have to admit I always carried a dream of entering a MX race and at age 34 I finally did when I tried an AMA Millville Springcreek race as a beginner.
4. What was the highlight of your career?
Being 7yrs old and winning the 1st race I ever entered at the old Eastside track / meeting Dan Ulwelling of Rydjor bike shop and hanging with our Rydjor team. Fave racing memory? Entering the 1981 Rondo classic and finding I could ride and hold my own against Doug Davis-it inspired me to push myself and be dedicated.
5. What teams did you ride for?
Rydjor Bike of Austin(1980 to 1982), Tahoe 1982 to 1983.
6. What was the highest State rank you held?
#2....there was always someone younger racking up points...anyone heard of Willie Huebner?
7. When did your BMX career end and why?
In 1983, age 15, I was getting burned out with the traveling and my interest in hanging with my friends back home started to pull me to the civilian lifestyle. I think the weekday races in Southern Mn(Wednesdays in Mankato, Friday nights in Austin, Saturday in Albert Lea, Sunday in Rochester etc ...became too much.). I should have tried to hit more nationals in hindsight.
8. Tell us about yourself now, and where you currently live?
I am 38 years old living a dual life of teenage irresponsibility and reluctant adulthood. I have a great and understanding wife, Beth, and 2 very energetic and compulsive kids slowly being coaxed into bikes and competition, however, our house is also very big into the performing arts too...We're a well rounded group of ne'r-do-wells.-future racers Mathilda 4yrs and Magnus 2 yrs.- I make a living as a (whatelse) mentor for Mentor Network, ebay sales, and helping out the family hobby shop biz "Marty's Hobby".
9. What is something that you learned from BMX?
to find a way to channel your emotions to accomplish your goals. Even negative vibes can be bent to a positive outcome with the right obsessions and goals...Also, learned to watch out for distractions in life to derail your goals. I realize now that it was my mid teen testosterone elevations that derailed my dreams for a few years. My hats off to any parent that can keep the kids channeled through those teen years.
10. Tell us one funny story that happened during your career.
In between Austin MN and Des Moines IA on our way to the 1981 ABA indoor nationals. The Rydjor team in the shop van driven by Brad Apold's dad Bill stopped for gas at a roadside station with food from a little restaurant connected to it....my team mate Shan Lynde walked in barefoot and ordered hashbrowns while Bill was pumping gas. Bill paid for the gas and hopped back in the van and we drove off not realizing Shan was still behind waiting for his hashbrowns. We were about a 1/8th mile down the gravel service road when we realized Shan was running after us barefoot (on gravel)trying to catch up. When he got into the van he said "I told em' they can keep the hashbrowns!" Classic.
11. What was your favorite bike from back in the day?
I had a 1980 GJS all decked out before my Tahoe sponsorship...Nothing better than that bike. I always loved odd frame designs. I think OM Scott Breithaup influenced me a lot with the Quadangle design.
12. Who were your BMX heroes?
I always looked up to California guys and the perceived lifestyle I read about in BMX Action. Because I am a South MN rider I never got the chance to really know the Metro riders like Dave Christensen and John Sandberg. I tagged along with Mark Conley alot but he was a brooding lone wolf most of the time-. I never had a fave rider to cheer for...but generally underdogs are my thing. I always wanted to see someone small in size beat Stu Thomsen...David vs Goliath.
ROCK ON and we'll see ya Later. Sean M.
P.S. They do still let him out for fresh air once in a while..

Great interview Sean... But the rider that beat you out in points the year you got #2 was non other than Tracy Long (Tremco/Rondo?) and I think he was from Rochester. His Dad took him EVERYWHERE to race. Willie Huebner was a MN-1 rider. ( I think)

Great, great interviews here folks. Thanks so much for this stuff.
Dave's answers to "What I learned from BMX" question are priceless. Spitting coffee as I read them.
One thing I'd like to add/clarify about Dave's highest state ranking: He won the NBA #1z for Minnesota in 1980. BUT then most tracks switched to ABA for the next season, so Dave never got to run his #1 plate. That was too bad, because he absolutely deserved to ride #1.
Mark: sorry I haven't responded to requests. I just returned from a dirt bike trip in Moab. Answers coming in a day or so.
Awesome Gary Walton pix. Gary: we'd love to hear some stories about the time you worked at BMX Plus.

Don't worry Jerry, they will put the picnic tables out very soon!
Shawn S, built that track in the early-mid 80's. Circa 83???
I contacted the city about doing some things with it, but they are nervous nellies about it. Now might be a good time for me to call Shawn, and see what we can do about aranging some Bob-cat time on it to help with the Old School meets New School theme of the summer.
It's a fun place for R/C cars too! But the jumps are sagging in the middle like a starved horse. I think the brown colors and lack of grass help make it look bad....heres a few pix from a couple summers ago..

If you look at the jump before the first berm, you'll see it gets used more sideways than trackwise now. In fact, all those paths are not part of the track, but paths to hit the jumps and berms from other angles.
I would still love to spend some time with a Bob-Cat on it
...and also hold an impromptu MN OS gathering there......along with one at the Mound pool/skate park.
Or....2 hours at the track, (a 10 minute drive to the pool for) 2 hours at the pool park, and a 2 minute drive to a bonfire and brats/burgers/beerverages at "La pad".....

It would be OS meets New School at the pool park for sure....But our OS bikes don't have 34 tooth sprockets on the front, and the pool can be hard on the old "42/16" drivetrain.....

Ted, the kids do hit the berms and jumps at other angles (notice the various paths). The last time I was there (03) I was crank'n into the first corner and some kid come flying side ways to hit the jump and he got there before and just as he got air, I was staring to get air and I "T-boned" him in mid air. Being I weigh about 60 lbs more than this kid I just plowed him over big time, the kid just launched and I too did the roll, but I was okay, the kid was dazed... I told those kids to stay on the path unless people like me aren't on the track.... Plus I warned them before all this happend. Silly kids

So where are the good outdoor dirt riding areas for us old timers? Are there track you can practice on?
Pauli, your pictures bring back a lot of memories of that place. I think the last time I was there it was a night race and it could have been part of the MN state champ races. Good times.
Ted, anytime you want to ride, let me know. I would love to do a get together at MP or the skate park.

Celebrate 25+ years of BMX racing in Northern Minnesota
After procrastinating too long I decided to get the cranks movin' to organize a reunion of Northern BMXer's. In conjunction with the Brainerd BMX races on July 7 & 8th that would be a great place to gather to watch some races and then spend some time after the races for catching up, dinner, and a slide show of images & movie clips from our days.
Is this the same wekeend as Mark's OS/NS gathering at Brainerd, I am confused but that is nothing new...?

Yes, in 2005 our Beagles BMX racing and J.T. Freestyle teams had a 25 year reunion in Duluth. Had movies, slideshow, bikes, memorabilia, pictures, pizza buffet, etc. and a great fun time! Plus we got the guys to show up at the Duluth indoor wheelpark to shred on the ramps with their kids...gnarly time! I wanted to go a step further with ALL of us Northern guys but my tumor and other issues took over.
Now that we have a great OS/New School series thought we should hit Brainerd for a reunion of the Moose Jaw, Virginia, Beagles, and Brainerd tracks. I have asked my Northern BMX friends to network with anyone they know to get Northern OS BMXer's to contact me at JTFREESTYLE@YAHOO.COM
Have contacted Justin who manages the Brainerd track and waiting to hear back on upcoming details pertaining to their new track and area where we can have a reunion.
Looking forward to meeting up with more OSer's July 7 & 8th at Brainerd! Not leaving out the Southern guys and know you'll be heading to each of the series races that you can but this one should be huge!!!

In conjunction with the OS/NS series we Northern BMXer's would like to gather with everyone else who is at the Brainerd Track July 7 & 8th.
The exact date/time/place for the reunion has not yet been determined due to the new location of the track and available facilities.
The Rockford of Northern MN - racing, vintage bikes, tons of catching up to do, slide show, dinner/buffet, more racing, etc.
So if you know of anyone from BITD that raced up North, have them contact me at JTFREESTYLE@YAHOO.COM

JT: I can't tell from the pic, is that the same Josh Walter that worked at Penn Cycle in Richfield circa 1995?
J.T.
Apr 26 2007, 03:09 PM
Yup! Josh and I grew up together in Duluth. Our paths crossed in 1992 at a Hyland Hills MTB race.
Out on the trail around '97 was passed again and realized Josh lived two streets down from me! We have been BMXing and MTBing here and there throughout the years. He is becoming a Nurse Anesthetist or should be one really soon. That has taken up a lot of time from his riding.
Trying to get him out to Rehbeins and other BMX events planned this summer. The Duluth reunion brought many of us together and it would be cool to expand on that for Brainerd.
