Todays guest is Jeff Tollefson (JT,RL).
I have only met JT one time at our January gathering. JT is very knowledgable in the big scale of things of BMX history, and knows quite a few big names in the BMX world. I also understand he has quite the collection of old school bikes, and still rides frequently!
I do not have any access to photos of him in my collection
Name: Jeff_Tollefson (JT)
Jeff’s Web Site:
www.jtfreestyle.com1. When did you start racing?
Was BMXing and didn’t know it until 1974 when I saw On any Sunday.
1976 first competitive race, unsanctioned.
1978 first sanctioned race with the NBA.
2. Where was your hometown when you raced?
Duluth and built my own track called “The Track†behind my house. Proposed tracks for Duluth but the City shot it down after passing an ordinance when I wasn’t at a City Council meeting. We had to race at Moose Jaw BMX in Moose Lake, Virginia BMX, and later opened a track just South of Duluth at the Buffalo House.
3. What was the reason that you started?
Into Motocross as a kid. My Mom couldn’t afford my MX habit so I always BMX’ed but got really involved in 1977. With building “The Track†and having unsanctioned races it was a great outlet for me to be involved with something other than the negative things my older friends were involved with. Building a jump then mastering it was so fun and exciting! Trying to race as fast as you can without wiping out was also very exciting. I lived at the track and most of my friends to this day were due to “the track†and all of our experiences there.
Being able to travel and meet new people was cool too! New tracks, new challenges, and winning is always nice too! BMX kept me healthy and occupied so I would think I would have been in jail without it. BMX was individual and liked that I could excel at something that I could put all my attention towards. It paid off and made me for who I am today.
4. What was the Highlight of you’re career?
1981 Starting Beagles Bike and Ski BMX team
1981 15 and over Points champion at Moose Jaw BMX
1982 16 and over Points champion at Moose Jaw BMX
1982 16x 2nd place, by a knobby, at Richfield
5. What teams did you ride for?
Beagles Bike and Ski
6. What was the highest State rank you held?
#43
7. When did your BMX career end and why?
In 1984 I was one of the oldest and not too much new competition at that age. Also was involved with my JT Freestyle trick team in 1982. I was getting more shows and making more money so I switched to Freestyle full time.
8. Tell us about yourself now, and where you currently live
Been riding all this time and still doing Freestyle shows. Moved out to Los Angeles to be where the action was in 1985 but finished college at Saint Scholastica in Duluth. Moved back to Minnesota to be closer to family.
My skillset is in Computer Information Systems and have been applying my degree ever since graduating in 1988. Met my wife, Carolyn, and we were married in 2005. We live in Saint Paul and have been there for 14 years.
9. What is something that you learned from BMX?
You can do whatever you want to if you put in the hard work to accomplish it. I took it seriously and applied myself 110% in all aspects of my life. BMX brought that out in me and am so grateful that it allowed me to use all my experiences in my daily life!
10. Tell us one funny story that happened during your career.
We headed down to the Rondo classic and I had a 103 temperature. Besides feeling really crappy we crammed five people into a car totally loaded to the hilt! The bikes were on a rear bike rack but due to all the weight every time we hit a bump we would hear a weird noise? The bikes were barely off the road and would scrape every time we would hit a bump. Each time we would look to see if the bikes were to fly off! They didn’t but we had to get new tires.
11. What was your favorite bike from back in the day?
My Torkers from 1978 - 1983
12. Who were your BMX heroes?
Stu Thomsen, Eddy King, Greg Hill, and Dave Christensen when we finally had a Minnesota pro.

JT and I went to Hollywood in 2004 for the Joe Kid movie premier. I remember in the airport on the way out, he got pulled aside and searched. I think it was because of all his camera bags and such.
Then on the way back, they did it again.
We should post our sketches from Venice Beach

I recieved a GREAT gift from Mr. Dave Christensen last night. Dave and his wife have made up and given me a large quanitity of these pins, zipper pulls and key chains to sell to help support this series.
Dave's Step Father, Bob was in this business for many years, and after he passed away, Dave and his Wife had taken over the business since then.
DAVE- I know you read these, and THANK YOU VERY MUCH! This has more meaning to me than you can imagine!
More information to follow, once I get it from Dave.

Great story JT..... I had no idea there was bmx going on in the Deep North at that time, and a freestyler on top of it, guess I was too focused on the Twin Cities gig.
That place called the "track" sounds like it was a blast, I'm sure you and your buddies growing up have alot of B.S. you can sling around from those stomping grounds. Look forward to seeing you at future events...

Thought I would show you my first BMX bike....
An
AMF Bumble Bee converted into a BMX bike.
First in Black 1974
Then in yellow 1977, Look at the gearing and the crank length. HaHa
I got my first real (I thought was real) BMX bike in 1978, Schwinn Mag Scrambler
They were all tanks, but they sure were fun!!

Sweet rides Manning, your way cooler than I thought... That MAG Scrambler sure brings back some awesome memories! That speedometer on your 74 also rocks HARD.

Here this whole time I had the impression that I was way cool! HaHa
Aren't those sweet rides Spingbreak! I used to live on those. The speedometer was my dads idea. I remember maxing that speedo out at the grand ol speed of 25 MPH a few time going down big hills. I must have broken a 1/2 dozen cables for that thing!

Manning! That AMF is the SAME frame and fork that I started my stellar BMX/Freestyle career on! Awesome!!! I want to find another and build 'er up. I bet there are one or two of those around.
Is that the church right off 40th in the garage door window?
There was a kid that lived right off VanBuren who had a brown PK that he pulled out of a dumpster after another riding buddy had cracked it. He brought it home and his old man welded it. The kid who had threw it away was all mad after it had been fixed.
Jeff, this is going to sound obscure, but did you ever sell a pair of blue MKS pedals to a little rat called Max? He had to fight another kid for them after the sale. Too funny.
Jeff Manning

Awesome Mikko!
Great eye on spotting the old First Lutheran Church in the background. The "Pumkin's back there too!
I do remember selling those pedals to somebody, but I don't remember their name. The pedals came off my Robinson at the time. I remember not liking those pedals to much because they made noises and they were slippery, but cool looking! HaHa

Another great ride at the barn tonight !!! Pauli was in the HOUSE working on his gate starts. NEW GUY Scott WBL BMXer was sporting his OS 24" HUTCH and looking fast. Its nice to see someone riding a OS bike and not afraid to scratch it or crash it, even tho he took off his A'me grips, DX pedals, and OS seat. Looks like pauli and i will have a new rider in the cruiser class. also a special guess Mark "PHOTO" Conley taking video and pictures of all of the action.

All the key players were there tonight. Slackers stayed home which was nice so it was easier to talk about them, lol. Scott WBL, it was great to BS with you some more, I think I am in trouble because you definetly still got the skillz. Boecker was extra fast tonight for some reason, the video should show the results. Doug, thanks for the beerski afterwards, its always great hangin with the boys after on a beautiful Spring evening.
We stopped by the Elk River track this evening on the way home and it held up pretty well through the winter. Man the track looks long compared to rehbeins. I am excited to see the rebuild at Elk River, its going to be fun.

pauli, you should of asked Doug for the keys , so you could of turned on the lights and take a couple of laps. how far is the track from your house ???
Paul Springer
Apr 18 2007, 09:10 PM
The track was obviously still pretty spongy soft but not to rutted. As the crow flies it is about 4 miles, beacuse I have to cut accross Elk River to cross the Mississippi and head south its about 7.5 miles.

Great time last night. I posted a reply on the other thread but I thought I would chime in here too.
Thanks for the nice words guys. I felt slow and could not get the timing down right to glide smoothly over the jumps. It seemed like I couldn't get into the jump with the right timing and pedal position, but that track never gives you a break either. I was more tired rolling the rhythm section than pedaling the first straight.
Pauli, don't worry too much. My only advantage last night is I was going forward on the gate while you were going backwards. You’re still smoother on the track. After listening to Boecker's elbow issues, I have to consider retirement again. LOL

Next Up, King Of Pipeline! Jerry is the founding father of our "king sized Minnesota thread"! I knew Jerry way back when he was a little guy who use to hang out at my clothing store, and ride on my ¼ pipe.
Jerry is another one that has carried his love for BMX most of his lifetime it seems. KOP, has an incredible collection of Haro’s! some still in the box.
Again, I have no past photos of him in my stock (Jerry please feel free to post your childhood face on a bike…or in diapers)
BUT, Watch for KOP while you and you're Family are at the park utilizing picinic tables for what they are meant for!
Name: Jerry Severson
1. When did you start racing? 1982
2. Where was your hometown when you raced Waseca, Mn.
3. What was the reason that you started? It just seemed so cool. Had a friend who got a bmx bike, and I wanted one also. After riding his, I got mine shortly after. Also seeing Bob Haro ride in 1981 was something I’ll never forget., that got me stoked to get out there.
4. What was the Highlight of you’re career?
Racing in Rochester. Going into the first corner in last place. I took the corner wide, swooped the inside, passed everybody and held the lead until the end. It just felt so good.
5. What teams did you ride for?
I was on the Skyway support team. But that was a total joke. You basically bought they’re parts at a discount. But it was cool to wear that Skyway jersey with my name on the back, and support team underneath. But I think I was still a novice even.
6. What was the highest State rank you held?
Never too high, I went to a lot of races, but just wasn’t that good.
7. When did your BMX career end and why?
Never has ended, it’s still going. I did stop racing in 1986, my obsession with BMX Freestyle began to take over everything. I went full on into the freestyle scene and loved it. I still think that is the most amazing sport there is. But I always had a racing bike and never stopped checking out races and going to tracks to jump.
8. Tell us about yourself now, and where you currently live
I’m 37, live in Waseca, and work in Security. I collect BMX magazines and bikes. I ride a lot of mountain bike for exercise and like riding the skateparks. But mostly, I’m just hanging out and trying to have fun while I still can.
9. What is something that you learned from BMX?
Too much. I’m still learning. Even when I was pressured by the woman and cars, I stuck to BMX. Not sure how I did it now. I was such an outcast and took a lot of heat in school for it. So high school sucked. Went from being the coolest guy in school one year, to the biggest loser the next. But I got a few friends that stuck by me though those years, and they are my best friends today. Peer pressure, it’s a *****.
10. Tell us one funny story that happened during your career.
Recenlty I drove to California to work and live with a BMX icon, Ron Wilkerson. Nothing was what it seemed and ended up pretty much coming right back. Now when I think about it, I had to try it, but I wish I would have flown, so I could have gotten out of there sooner. I did love hanging out at the beach all day. But it was just too weird out there and I felt out of place a bit. All the bmxer’s and skateboarders I met out there were really nice to me, and when I think back, it was just a funny experience.
11. What was your favorite bike from back in the day? I cant’ believe all the nice bikes I had. Probably my white Haro Freestyler. That got stolen at a Haro show.
12. Who were your BMX heroes? Bob Haro, Matt Hoffman, Kevin Jones, Chad Kagy, Morgan Wade.
B. Apold

KOP, great interview!!! I know how you feel about California the first time out. Its SOOOOO big you don't know were to start. Its a big scary place to be alone and with limited cash flow.

Here is someone that is clearly an honor to hear from, since he is not a member, but we know he lurks from time to time…..Dave Christensen.
Dave and I spent MANY hours on the road together in the early part of our careers, time that I’ll never forget. All the stories that came from those times are priceless. Dave’s entertaining ways were nonstop, and still continue to this day. (or at least as of yesterday, when an odd shaped package showed up in my mail. Thanks Dave!)
Indy World Championships
This is one of my favorite covers. Period. Dave #2z
#50 Tahoe
Name: Dave Christensen
1. When did you start racing?
I would say 1978
2. Where was your hometown when you raced?
Brooklyn Park, MN
3. What was the reason that you started?
Local Bike Shop B.J’s™ Bike & Ski started track in town.
So my parents purchased a BMX bike to get me going.
4. What was the Highlight of you’re career?
a) Leading the 1983 AA Pro Point standings going into the
ABA Grands in 1983 for National title.
B) Cover Photo BMX Plus Feb. 1980
c) Rondo® Classic 1982 (Great Local Race)
d) Charrlett, NC ABA National 1st place finish AA Pro
5. What teams did you ride for?
a) BJ’s Bike Shop
B) Team Tremco
c) Rondo®
d) Tahoe Racing
6. What was the highest State rank you held?
2z has Keith Abrahamson ranked 1z. In addition Tim Judge (FL resident) registered his home address in MN as he had relative in MN and he transferred points to his MN # and one year placed 1z also. Going into Grands I was leading AA Pro Points and National #1 title was at stake. Crashed in Friday eve “Gold Cup†with Tracer Finn from Vegas and my knee filled up with fluid. I started each race on Sat. /Sun for Nat. #1 title and due to the knee was unable to ride 100%. 18 AA Pro’s were racing for $10,000 purse and 1982 Pontiac Trans Am. By starting each race, with points going into the Grands the worst I could finish was Nat. #9, and that’s what happened. I ended up Nat. #9 AA Pro.
7. When did your BMX career end and why?
1984 after Grands in 1983 and knee raced Worlds in Vegas and didn’t make mains. Decided to go to Collage in St.Cloud, MN.
8. Tell us about yourself now, and where you currently live
Minnetrista, MN two kids Rachel 5, son Calvin 8, and wife Tamera. Enjoy boating, camping with family. Still love to ride bike. In fact John Sandberg and I will enjoy 20 year reunion and ride at the 40 mile Chequamegon Fat Tire Festival this fall in WI on Mnt. Bikes.
9. What is something that you learned from BMX?
If you sleep at night with head phones and a cassette tape recording of “Listen Up! Rider’s Ready, Pedals Set†you don’t get a better start. If you drill out your hair comb to look light weight and trick Chicks will dig you at least in 1979. If you throw an empty pizza box out off the balcony on the 22nd floor in San Diego, CA the box will go up over the roof, not down at negative 9.8 netons per kilo gram. Speaking of hotel elevation, if you drop a plate down the elevator door shaft from 10 floors up it will shatter when it hits the floor in the lobby. If throw a short cocktail thick bottom glass from 5th floor if it hits just right, it will not brake or crack. If the maid at the hotel is vacuuming and you pick the “maintains storage†door, you can put qty. 28 towels in an empty bike box. One big lesson, don’t ever take your team mates pool side Girl Friend, even in Hawaii! Don’t toss your friends hat over the brick fence if Stuart is letting his dog out. If you lose a race on Sat., carrying your bike up the stair well 22 floors only works against you Sunday. 25 push-ups at each gas station keep’s your nose smelling like diesel fuel. Gary Erdman’s word choice “Perfect†I still use today some 25 years later! Don’t let your 15 year old son travel to Calf. For a Nat. with two guys from Austin, MN in a Thunder Bird® with low tire pressure? If you’re traveling in snow and ice (Flagstaff, AZ) you can open the passenger door and stand vertical holding the door while the vehicle is still traveling along at 25 MPH. If you throw day old pizza at a guy with his shirt off, he really will get a pizza rash/burn look; just like DNF’ing on the track. Don’t let Steve Redlesburger drink milk and ride in the same car.
10. Tell us one funny story that happened during your career.
Wow 25 years ago, too many great times and all the good people. All the pranks and all the jokes, we all had fun! One story, we were driving to AZ with Jack Doherty two cars. John Sandberg just 14 or so and I 16 years old were in one car and Jack and Pauline in the other. While driving we switched drivers and John just 14 drove 100 mile’s or so down the HWY.
11. What was your favorite bike from back in the day?
Cook Brother’s® my first national win 15 novice, my favorite trophy still on my desk next to Telephonken™ AM radio.
12. Who were your BMX heroes?
Of course Stu Thompson, PK Ripper, with locals likes Theo and Steve Redlesburger. As I raced guys like Donny Atherton, Mike Pulson, Anthony Sewell, Tommy Brackens were great. Both Anthony Sewell and Tommy were house guests one weekend at our house I really respected who they really were off the track.

KOP & Dave, nice write ups. I remember being in awe of your racing Dave. When I read these Q&A's, It really brings back the memories. I hope to see a lot of you guys at Mark's OS events.
Like KOP, here's my trophy photo after my racing had ended. It's funny that I have everything in that photo except the Oakley sunglasses around my neck. I just don't know why I look so unhappy. I should have been grinning knowing that all this stuff will be worth a ton in 20 years.

Cool just like you KOP!
Is that Donny Atherton #120 in the pic above w/ DC?? Atherton was really fast as an amatuer, then kinda faded away for a spell, before turning pro, then he was like super fast, still. I know Dave C. raced him alot in his years as an amatuer. I think thats also Atherton #3 in the famous OS MN T-shirts.
Agree, DC is the person that most represents Minnesota (expert and pro) Great accomplishments Dave!!!
