Full Version: Suntour Cassette-hubbed - Tuff II's?

I'll be honest, after mid-1984 I wasn't paying attention to the race side of BMX, it was all freestyle for me.

Was there a time when Tuff II's came with a cassette style freewheel hub?

Another question - I had no idea that Suntour made the (steel) metal hub on Tuff II's. I guess I was oblivious to this. Where all metal hubs made by Suntour for Tuff II's?
COASTY
Suntour and Bendix metal hubs. Shimano made hubs for them too I think.
Heres a cassette style I pulled from a busted Tuff II.

Where there many cassette-style Tuff II's made? I have a pair of black metal-hubbed Tuff II's that are in pretty good condition - I just found them.

I had a blue set with Suntour freehub back in about '82. They were pretty sweet. I was bummed the day I ended up braking them. Thta' swhen i upgraded to Graphites.

i'm no expert...but i beleive the suntour was the 1st freewheel style hub that skyway introduced-then came the metal flange where you added a regular freewheel. as far as a shimano-i never seen one on a tuff wheel.
don't know how many were made with the suntour quick change-but i got 4 sets...
when taking one of these apart-you would be masterminded on just how many bearings are in them...always take it apart from the drive side.
waza here on the board can fill us in on the details-he has plenty of tuffs spinning around!

So Coasty's pic above is that of a Suntour freehub?

I can see the name Suntour embossed on the inner hub on the front but I wasn't aware that the rear cassette hub was also Suntour.

Man, I have a lot to learn. Where's Waza when you need him?

top pic...suntour quick change
bottom pic..suntour coaster brake

waza has the step by step instructions to maintaining the suntour quick change..

That Suntour freehub pictured, is the one I sent to waza. I think there are a few around. I have a few myself. The alloy hubs and later had screw on freewheels. I haven't seen a steel hub with a screw on. I think the shimano thing is that some parts are able to be used. I don't think they actually made a complete hub.
Rich
you have a few of those quick change hubs laying around....for sale? i might be looking for one to put in a 24'' tuff...
COASTY
Sorry rich, I have a few empty tuff rims for them to go into. When I get around to it.

I rebuilt a set of Black tuff 1's today. Easier than i thought it would be..
Rich
