What type of 3 piece cranks would anyone recommend to use on my TA? What would be era correct?

Thanks
Rick

BITD I always wanted flights, but ran Sugino GT's.

I have a set of Shimano DX cranks on my TA and it looks awesome coming off of the White Frame and fork...(The Cranks say Motobecane because they came on a Motobecane bike when new back in the 80's which is kinda rare, but they are DX's) Here are a couple pics!!!

I'm running 180MM Redline 400's on mine -- since 87 or so... I never raced, but rode the bike pretty hard back then. Never had any issues at all with them even to this day. They're apart for my restoration now though...

Nobody mentioned 2nd gen box Profiles yet, nice alternative to Redlines.

What about Sugino Super Maxy Cross in red ? I have a white frame and blue tuff Is. It seems the colors tend to be red white and blue combinations.

Thanks for the suggestions?
Chris C.
Redlines would be correct on any bike from 80s as far as I am concerned.

Bullseye cranks .. There was a local kid BITD that had a chrome T/A with bullseye cranks and hubs on chrome 7x's and If I remember right the cranks were chrome also .. That bike was Bad [not so fast, sparky] !!!! I will never forget it ..

An XL TA should have some beefy 3 piece cro mo cranks Like the redline or profiles suggested (not too sure about the 400's tho) on it , or a set of good 1 piece Takagi cranks , it's an XL frame built for big riders , not a 10 year olds frame.

Lightweight alloy cranks tend top soften up the look of a bike (imho) & offer a great point of least resistance to fail.

Build it Bulletproof. We did.

I'm 6'1 and was up to about 170 when I was riding it hard. (My T/A is a standard as well... not an XL). I wasn't too hefty in my younger days. The 400's hold up for me now at 220, but then again, i don't go thrashing it around any more either...

Whatever you put on there, enjoy the ride!

1 Ant: the guy requested suggestions/help for choosing something "era correct" , a self proclaimed BMX historian _might_ have offered a few suitable cranksets to choose from , rather than run whatever you like.

2 Lborse: Glad to know the 400's were tough enough at the time , I never owned or saw a set , bitd.

3 Rickcool: It's all up to you.

XL TA's rock

Thanks guys for all the replys. I just wanted to be era correct with the choice of cranks. I saw a set of Sugino Super Maxy Cross in red and just didn't want to be a dink and install a set that wasn't from around that era.....it is a sweet bike.....

Mr. black I do not build "era correct bikes" or 'Trailer queens" I build it i ride it. So i offerd my opinion. I am the type of person who would hack the frame stands off a hutch and cut the fork pegs off. Why you ask. Is he isane who would "destroy" a TRICKSTAR? Me bcause it is mine and i do not let other peoples opinons affect what i build. BUt that is my opinion.

Those Sugino's will look cool on there. I had a gold set on mine before I switched to the 400's.

Ant: It's a simple 2 part question or request for information from a guy who might not have been there at the time. Not everyone on this board was in their teens in & living the life during the early 1980's , Matt & I were were fortunate enough to be there & doing it all here in Australia.

"What type of 3 piece cranks would anyone recommend to use on my TA?

Everyone but you , answered the question & offered up their thoughts on a set of suitable 3 piece cranks , in my haste I did make the mistake of suggesting some Takagi 1 piece cranks rather than using any alloy 3 piece cranks. I strayed from directly answering his question , my bad.

"What would be era correct?"

Again he's asking for backup to his first question , some guidance in building his 84 XL TA
"in the spirit of the times" or trying to keep a Vintage look to his bike.

I'm sure it has something about keeping your answers "on topic" in the FAQ here. If you don't care for building "era correct" bikes then why comment on a question where someone is asking for "era correct" information ?

Yeah we cut & cleaned up a few sets of shonky Skyway pedals & mounted their cages onto a NOS
set of Skyway pedals , these particular pedals have seen <400 light duty turns.Skyway graphite pedals
were a short lived product under race & street conditions. They deserve to be an "era correct trailer queen part" , that's all their good for , Black sealed bearing DX pedals are on the single pinch Flites now. 5 spoke THUG mags replace the first generation Campy Hubbed Graphites. Thats one very incorrect era confused XL TA that can now get thrashed around
as a rider today.

There's plenty of threads debating the merits of what constitutes or defines broad terms like "era correct" , "survivor" , modifying NOS parts etc etc , post your _opinions_ there , why not start a new thread , titled "Jet Black's a Jackass" & see how long it lasts on a friendly & helpful area like Vintage talk or the Tech & Restoration section.Post that thread in the Cafe , I don't go there & the moderators may let it ride in there.

Jason was asking a question & wanting information.
I don't know how old he is or what he was doing in the BMX world in the years leading up to 1984. So I gave him some answers to his questions & a few thoughts.

If you want to throw in your opinion , at least offer an answer someones question.

JB

BTW Keep on torching & welding the Hutch Trickstar you mentioned down to a Pit Bike , downhill racer , sidehack or whatever you want , it will make the existing overpriced & uncut Trickstars worth more.

Dude get over yourself, it is a bike that's all a bike.

It is not that serious.

btw thanx for making me laugh today, I needed it.

Ant, you were supposed to suggest Aerospeeds, what happened? Lol.
ANT DOG 3:16
Nah that would be conflicting companies. hutch products on a skyway who in the hell would do that.
