HOMER
I’ve had the frame and forks for a while trying to decide what to do with them (build them as is, or re-chrome them) when I got them the frame had a oversized headset stuffed into the head tube which bulged the ends of the tube out and caused the chrome to chip. I made some aluminum jaws to fit the diameter of the tube and swashed the tube back to its normal shape and size but still had the chrome issue. The forks (the two holed version) had a home made brake hole drilled in them so crooked that it came out the back side into the fork weld. My friend says he will get around to fixing those forks but hasn’t yet so I went with the thruster made forks, they are very unique. I left the frame as is and decided to build a bike that had all original condition parts and nos parts except for the decals, I made those.

Frame: mid to late 1980 hutch standard w/drilled brake bridge (used w/original chrome)
Forks: hutch, I don’t know when these were made. I never even saw a set as a kid (original chrome)
Headset: Tange 125 (used original condition)
Bars: unknown aluminum (used original condition)
Grips: Oakley .5 (nos)
Neck: tuf-neck (used original condition)
Brakes: dia-compe (nos)
Plate: dunno what it is, I don’t even remember when I bought it, slapped some stickers on it and wa la
Pads: hutch (nos)
Seat: viscount (nos)
Seat post: aluminum fluted (nos)
Seat post clamp: tuf-neck (nos)
Cranks: redline flight (used w/original chrome)
Pedals: union (nos)
Spider: tioga (nos)
Chaining (45t probably a suntour or sugino)
Chain: izumi (used original condition)
Rims: araya 7c (nos)
Hubs: bullseye (nos)
Freewheel: chrome suntour (used original condition)
Tires: comp 2 (nos)

I’m happy with the way it turned out. Hope you enjoy….

Wow! that's awesome! I can't remember ever seeing those stickers before. My cousin got an Expert Racer BITD and it was the first Hutch I ever saw. It had the classic Hutch western type letters on it. Very cool!!!!!! Thanx for posting that!!!

Well, you did it Greg! Fantastic job. A long project worth the wait! And BIIIG props for leaving the chrome original.

That is incredible, earliest Hutch I have ever seen!! How accurate are those Hutch decals? I have seen them but only in very poor black and white photos, whats your reference?

Man, with those early pads, Hot Plate, colored tires, padded seat, very well done representation of 1980. Its so wierd to see those things on hutch because most Hutch builds you see reflect 1983-1985 era. Very nice and original!!

the decals as far as the head tube and down tube are copied, the forks were just a guess, glad you like it

a huge thanks should have been in my original post to the JJR hutch web site. i would not have been able to make the decals for this bike without that web site. so thanks for creating it so i could copy the pic you have of the originals and spend many many hours reworking it into decals. i made 1 set and i do not plan to make any more unless i find another frame set like this one.

Plain and simple, that is one sweet Hutch. Definitely not what you normally expect in a Hutch (as someone mentioned earlier the usual 83-85 era).

Sweet.

Great bike!
First time i see someone build a first gen. Hutch.
I like it very much.
But as far I know, the first Hutch frames had a Robinson fork.
