I actually think it was November 1978, held at the International Amphitheater on the south side in the Stock Yard District of Chicago.....near old Comiskey Park. Twas my first indoor race. Super slippery concrete floors, wooden ramps.

You are correct Greg...used to be called the Chicago Amphitheater. I was there and have some pics I'll post when I find them.

November 1979 BMX Plus. Also Pk ripper test and East coast nationals. Do not have a scanner.

I would love to see any pics or articles on that race! I took a nasty spill over the first jump after holeshotting and got run over by every other rider in the Moto, it hurt so bad!!

I raced an indoor in the winter 79/80 at what I think was that location. I dont remember any big names there but very fast locals. Gordy from Freewheeler in GR crashed with some guy leading the X main and almost got in a fight.

I also remember some local dude on a Gjs doing freestyle stuff we had never seen before.

Kevin Nowak went with us and he was only about 13 then.

Somewhere very near by, was a stockyard. (cattle-with cattle droppings) I think some kind of meat packing thing going on. It was ripe.

The Amphiteatre was located right at the entrance to the Famous Chicago stock/slaughter yards and in the middle of the chicago meat packing district. That would account for the stench.

Anyone remember the "jumping contest" going on at the back of the parking lot near the maintenance garage??

There were a couple races there. One was in 79 and one in 80, I believe. The 1979 version was "The Great Race" and happened in August, I believe. It was part of the 1979 Schwinn tour and, Chicago being Schwinn's hometown, was quite a spectacle for dealers and the Kostner Ave brass. My friend Bill Morici won 13X at that race (his first major national win).

I was at the 1980 installment (the only race my dad ever took me to). We had a case of Aqua Net, which made matters worse as it turned out. I went down in flames in the third moto and did not qualify.

I have the BMX Plus! issue with the Great Race coverage (November 79) and will scan up the coverage pages this weekend for you.

bump. this is the race that got roland veight his mongoose factory ride. used to see roland at the local races around '79-'80 and am a big fan. i remember watching him on his schwinn sting and couldn't believe how big and fast he was on a 20 inch bike. if anyone has the magazine coverage please post it. it'd be cool to see.
