Reilley1
Anyone?
hollywood763
I first saw them in about 82.
lboorse2
I remember it being about then as well. I remember being in grade school that you had to be cautious of who you let take your bike for a ride since it could come back to you without donuts.
The Red Baron
I had them in the late 70s. My habit was to grip the ends of the handlebars, so the "donuts" for the grips were a good fit for me.

I looked for them in my old pictures but could not find any. I will continue looking.

If I said I invented them, would you believe me?

lol.
and you always knew who stole all the donuts cause they had 10 on each grip with all different colors.
Reilley1
Just curious cause I remember stealing the padding off the insulating covers of outside electrical connectors in the mid 70s and using them as "donuts"

I found this picture today of my little brother (He's a little over a year in the picture as the picture is stamped with some garbled month and a 75) which makes it summer or late 75

It's a crappy pic but check out the grip on the handlebars (The bike is my 75 Webco)
It's the "donut!"

Damn! Where's my royalties??
G-Flash
Can you eat them?
hollywood763
those are shiny grips, what were those made of?
JohnnyJohnson OMAS DirtSlinger
Deric Garcia (Kuwahara) made them very popular around 82'.
The Red Baron
Reilley wants "royalties".

Now we have to call him "Sir Rick, The Duke of Donuts".
Reilley1
I prefer "The Earl of Scheib"
Bryan_Esser
I think A'me Grips for some reason...but then that may have been waaay later actually.
bmxbuzz
I currently run them on all of my rides, especially with Oury grips - good fit and feel.

TeamRob
Those grips in Reiley's pic are either Finish Line or Oury... Watch, I'll be corrected.
hollywood763
they almost look like hand grenades, but I don't think they came out til 79 or 80.
t nile
I always thought Flite invented em.
tznutts
I started using them in 83... I still have scars on the knuckles of my thumbs from grips just rubbing them raw prior to using doughnuts... it did not matter how soft the grip... then I started wearing gloves and kept them on there for looks...
guest_070901
dunkin donuts, duh.

whoever invented them should remarket.
The kids still dig em out of the junk box to put on their bikes.

John Piant
I think it was one of my sponsors. And since I still hate them, I won't use the name. I'm thinking 81 or 82. It was named after a dog.
EMPI
I remember having 5 donuts on each grips.

Marketing scam - unlike Krispy Kreme doughnuts!!
Sidehack Guy
I remember that alley! That was a long time ago.
Reilley1
Yah..32 years ago. That was the small jump Mike Hardaway and other people used to use. You were the big goofball and were "jumping" in the picture.

The best part is that you are getting the same amount of air that you got when you got a real bike..

I remember WEBCO was selling them back in the very early 70's. I had them on my Honda Mini Trail 50. A black naugihide thing. I took em off becuse they kept binding up in the clutch/brake lever.

Hmmm....

Flite made donuts as one of their key products.
Commercially made donuts didn't really hit big until about 1982. After that they were pretty much a standard item.

Flite also made 'Jumbo Donuts'.
I have a pair sealed in the pack and they are multi coloured.
These were for the little guys to pad out the width of a regular hand grip to fit a small hand better.
Yes, Derek Garcia did kinda start thattrend when he was on Kuwahara (stacking up a bunch of donuts on his grips).
Other guys to do this were 'Chicken' George Severs (Redline).
Some of these guys even took the sleeves off their Oakley B1Bs for more grip.

A'ME did not offer donuts with their grips however Oakley did from the B1B onwards (the B2 and O-Wing).
As far as I'm aware the B1B was the first mass-produced grip to come stock with donuts. That was one of the reasons it was very state-of-the-art, not to mention it also came with extra sleeves.

I remember at school in Home Ec. class making BMX stuff in teh 'sewing class'. I got a bunch of wetsuit material and cut rounds out to make 'donuts'. Essentially it's the same material. At the time I was running Grab On MX3s which had the big, odd shaped flange so I custom made donuts for those.

PS: In Home Ec class I also made myself a pair of leg 'gators' and raced with them!

Funny timing this thread...

I had a couple of younger (like 30 year olds) mates around on the weekend (non OS freaks)...They were checking out a couple of my builds....and guess what? Out of all the blood and sweet you spill on your builds, they notice? The hand polished steel BB cups, the mx125 headsets or perhaps the polish DX's?

Um nup..."Them foamy things on the grips are pretty cool"...geeeez that was easy to impress....then they proceeded to tell me the dice caps are gay!
Greg Hill
Rick I believe Winchell's is the name of the company that came out with donuts..
Billy Patterson
I was thinking that on a set of Grab-On's was the first time I saw them. Late 70's, early 80's?? hmm, don't really remember. As for who invented them, I'm not sure.

I do believe Rick Courteau (Mr Lounge) has it dead on. Webco did sell naughahide donuts for motorcycles in the early/mid 70s and i think that's where we got the idea from
G-Flash
YES! I concur with Reilley1! WEBCO was up early in da morning making dem der donuts! WEBCOS RULE THE MX!
JulianTorker
Donuts were a crossover from Motocross & Speedway, where they were commonly used from the early 70's. Glove technology wasn't like it is today and the donuts prevented your thumbs from being shredded.
Spicoli
new donuts are still readily available @ Dans in red, blue, and black...
Ted Carl
Personally, I never gave donuts a second look.

I never touched the grip flanges riding. Still don't.

Even riding motorcycles to this day, I grip the vibe dampers on the ends. On snowmobiles I have my little finger over the end of the grip and on the hooks. I never come near the insides of grips on anything.

If they would have invented flangeless grips bitd, like the new school ones, I would have been all over them.

Funny, in hindsight, I should have invented "Mini-Donuts" for the other ends of the grips at the bar ends bitd. A screw in crud plug with a hook on the front sides.

Too late to invent them now....They came stock on the new Sting.... I love em. The pinky finger locks right in there as it should!

I don't know who invented the Donuts Rick, but in hindsight, I should have invented the "Mini-Donut" for the other end.

I guess we have "Innies" and "Outies" with riders and thier grips.....lol
