I know it got me psyched to do some jumping.
I hear you Changstar!
Thanks to this website and everyone's continued contributions on the track + pictures, I am psyched as ever.. except life is totally in the way right now, complete with daily mowing of my blackbeard fur and the brewing of morning coffee to wake the tenderness of reality back to acceptance levels. The indecent transportation of choice happens to be my road bike and it seems somewhat obnoxious, except to my fellow celebrated roadies. What can I tell ya?
JK, I meant to answer your post way back a few pages.. sorry 'bout that. Wish I hung around a fraction longer, may have gotten to see you after what seems like decades. It is probably because it has, in fact, been decades, however we can establish wholesome laws and memories rather than fret over old age and the slowly deforming atoms of our humanity. I have SPD clip-in shoe soles that might have presented a slight problem on KKT style pedals, I'm sorry to say. The good news is, I am trying to preserve myself and resist the ongoing defects of age.. so I may yet get a 24 or 26 bike in the future.
The fact still remains that a full moon harvest of dirt lies beyond my reach at the moment. Stay tuned, I suppose?
In any case, I'll contribute by telling a short story about the exploits of foolish youth.
Take a look at this:

Recognize that the patches are from 1981's Century Ride, about 100+ miles. A small group of us did it with BMX bikes and as far as I can detect, accomplished the feat first in 1980. We even had our picture in some publication. The lineup included Raymond Motosue, Daniel Lee, Mark Miyashiro and myself, this was 1980. At the time, the Century started in Pearl City, Pacheco Park as I think the park is so named. The route went from Pearl City, eastward through Hawaii Kai, around Makapuu Point and then far west, through Pineapple Hills up towards Schofield and down the big hill back to Pacheco Park. These days it actually starts at Kapiolani Park, near my condo.
Who is retarded for attempting such a stunt?
ME, says Marky:

ME TOO, says PNUT:

My BMX bike had rims that danced the hula and my gears were 43x16. No water bottle, no energy bars carried, a patch kit with no pump, a six-inch crecent wrench and ripped up tennis shoes. Yes indeed, a really intellegent jump start to my already therapy-laded career on two wheels. Before ya'alls start ripping me and laughing, I made it back to the park in 13 hours. It was so late that all the tents and drink/aid stations were broken down already and no one was there to give me the finishing sticker and patch kit. I had no idea where any of my friends were and then I had to ride home from Pearl City to Kaimuki valley. But I finished the thing. A one-time blunder of epic proportions, but fame inspired.. so this contributed to the emptiness, perhaps.
The patch kit shown is from 1981. This was the second consecutive year I did the ride and this time around I actually prepared a little bit more. Same start and route. Jeffrey Kang came with us this time and he finished first among our group. I remember losing sight of him in Haleiwa town and watched him climb away on Pineapple Hill. Danny Lee also was near me after like 80 miles and I left him on the big hill. I stopped in Waiawa at my girlfriend's house at the time. She was freaking out, seriously! Like what, you RODE here in the Century Ride?? Do you need water or a strait jacket?? Hung around for a bit and headed down to the park. Got my sticker and patches! I believe my time was around 10.5 hours, still horrible, but there were people trailing in behind me. This was a proud moment because way back at like the 35 mile mark I actually cramped up and rolled to a stop, fell into some weeds on the side of the road in Waimanalo and wondered what the hail I was doing to myself. Didn't I learn my own miserable lesson the previous year? But I pressed on and did it. Yup, sharp as a porcupine was I... a real meaning of citation for sure.
Someday I hope that Jeff Kang, Raymond, Mark or any of the old gang finds this website because those Century Rides on BMX bikes was quite simply put.. outrageous. Mentally deranged.
Anyone else do early 80's centuries on a BMX bike?
The long-lost glow worms from my continually-growling stomach sends their regards.
