I have to admit we were not the most hardcore Tantalus riders. The truly hardcore rode up to the white road. we how ever cheated and got a ride up in Barry Uyeno's granpa's big van. I think it was yellow and had the extra high roof that looked like a small boat was sitting up on top. Boy did we have to squeez to get all of us in there. 20-25 bikes and riders, can't leave anyone behind so we made it fit no matter how many we had. Good thing the seat belt laws were more lax then. I remember a down hill right hander hairpin that was always wet and was so steep that brakes did very little to slow you down. If 1 or 2 riders made it through without falling that was good. We would all stop after the turn to watch each rider give it a try and one after another thay would go down. Then probably slide for another 10 feet. We would cheer for each other and laugh like crazy at each crash. Those days were awesome. What I would give for one day back in my youth, no bills, no worrys about getting hurt, bike dailed and running smooth and every place we go the jumps are perfect. And 10 bucks in my pocket so I can eat good.

Changstar

I vaguely remember a roots sections...tree roots. I remember brakes not working well here as you tires were not really on the ground.

I know we would cross a street about half way down and start on another trail, might have been Makiki trail. The bottom of the second trail had a section named rocks and roots and then came out through the Hawaii Nature center... I guess all that heavy braking and bouncing around. Then I tried to do the rest of the trail with just my front brake. Yes, I crashed alot on that day.

Changstar

Cool, I wasn't imaging the roots section.

Oh my....I remember this vividly. After cleaning the dirt from from in between my teeth, I said "I didn't even land that hard"....yah...sure I didn't land hard.

Wassup Slavey!!I remember going to your house after that crash and your pops being pissed off about the bike.Wasn't that a nearly new Hutch or something like that?
Ah the alchohol days. You didn't fair to well when it came to alchohol and cops.Remember Chang getting slammed because you ran from the cops.Prune Juice?---My mom said she use to see your mom at the store and she would be ashamed to talk to her because we were being a bad influence on you.I say that was just part of growing up.I think we all got arrested one time or another. The good ol' days.
Good to hear you doing good now. When you come back, you better be in riding shape.Aloha!!

Chang and I just came back from HKs.I got Lawrence's phone number now and offered to help him with building and maintaining the spot.If anybody else is interested in digging,PM me and we can set up a day to help them out.He has some good ideas about adding to the place and linking some of the sections. We watered most of it down before riding today and it was 100% better.
We got to set up something at NTs as well.

Sugi,

So was he cool with the stuff I built up? I was there this morning. At least it's still there.

You know what?Lawrence allways seemed like he was cool with what we built.I just overhear some comments from some of the other guys there.I heard someone say something today like there's no landing for that jump.Lawrence was saying the same thing we were saying about linking that section to the bottom berm section. He has some good ideas and seems interested in what BMXers think of them.

I remember that, I think I made some BS story and was able to have Hutch replace the whole frame due to "faulty workmanship".

Booze and cops=unforgettable memories. Running from cops near the courts near Jay Menor's house, dumping a nicely chilled 12 pack of beer at the request of HPD at Territorial Savings, imitating Flash Gordon at the MHS Carnival leaving Chang and the HPD in my dust, getting busted for stealing a bottle of Rum at Safeway, etc...

Yah, you guys weren't a that bad of a influence. Besides turning me into beer loving drunk, I think I turned out okay. angel.png

I need to extend the back side so there is a "landing area".

Whenever you plan to get together with Lawrence to build/dig/maintain. Please post it. If I am off duty and have a babysitter I'll be there. I have the same mindset as you. If I am going to ride there, I am going to help build/dig. Lawrence is the man for all that he does.............Blows my mind when guys don't help him out yet they complain about the track.

Did you get to ride/build today?

You been getting some nice air in the thread about what you're riding 20/24/26".
Jason Chang
Sunday was real good after the water and a little sweeping. Made for a wider smoother path. For me it made the most difference on the right side doubles, a few inches wider on the lip and landings gave me a lot more confidence in dong those. Even over jumped the second set and gave myself a heart attack. Lawrence seemed open to our ideas so I see it being more BMXish as building progresses. Welcome to Slavey, glad you found us. Yeah I took some lumps for your freedom, ha ha. By the way, forgot my broom so if anyone is out at HK and sees it, hide it well and let us know where it is.

Hey just saw the new pic of JK on the 20/24 or 26 thread. Sweeet pic. On the old school bike too. Just think, it is like you are running fast with shoes that are too small. When you get the perfect size shoe you will be even better. You are gonna be a terror on a new school bike.

I rode for about an hour and spent about 5hrs working on the one landing. It takes a while since there is no dirt on the track to use. (Does anyone know someone that has dirt we can use?) The one "jump" I am working on still needs some finessing. I didn't get to ride it since it was still wet. I guess you can call it a double now. You can either roll it or jump it. At least thats what my intent was.

I didn't realize it was your broom. I threw it in the bushes by the "whoops" but, I didn't hide it real well.....sorry.

jk
Sugi
Chang,I can give you Lawrence's phone number and he might be able to get and hold it.He said he lives right down the street from there.
Jason Chang
No worries on broom just figured someone might get there before me. JK you gotta post that pic on this thread, might inspire people to ride. I know it got me psyched to do some jumping.

I hear you Changstar!

Thanks to this website and everyone's continued contributions on the track + pictures, I am psyched as ever.. except life is totally in the way right now, complete with daily mowing of my blackbeard fur and the brewing of morning coffee to wake the tenderness of reality back to acceptance levels. The indecent transportation of choice happens to be my road bike and it seems somewhat obnoxious, except to my fellow celebrated roadies. What can I tell ya?

JK, I meant to answer your post way back a few pages.. sorry 'bout that. Wish I hung around a fraction longer, may have gotten to see you after what seems like decades. It is probably because it has, in fact, been decades, however we can establish wholesome laws and memories rather than fret over old age and the slowly deforming atoms of our humanity. I have SPD clip-in shoe soles that might have presented a slight problem on KKT style pedals, I'm sorry to say. The good news is, I am trying to preserve myself and resist the ongoing defects of age.. so I may yet get a 24 or 26 bike in the future.

The fact still remains that a full moon harvest of dirt lies beyond my reach at the moment. Stay tuned, I suppose?

In any case, I'll contribute by telling a short story about the exploits of foolish youth.

Take a look at this:

Recognize that the patches are from 1981's Century Ride, about 100+ miles. A small group of us did it with BMX bikes and as far as I can detect, accomplished the feat first in 1980. We even had our picture in some publication. The lineup included Raymond Motosue, Daniel Lee, Mark Miyashiro and myself, this was 1980. At the time, the Century started in Pearl City, Pacheco Park as I think the park is so named. The route went from Pearl City, eastward through Hawaii Kai, around Makapuu Point and then far west, through Pineapple Hills up towards Schofield and down the big hill back to Pacheco Park. These days it actually starts at Kapiolani Park, near my condo.

Who is retarded for attempting such a stunt?

ME, says Marky:

ME TOO, says PNUT:

My BMX bike had rims that danced the hula and my gears were 43x16. No water bottle, no energy bars carried, a patch kit with no pump, a six-inch crecent wrench and ripped up tennis shoes. Yes indeed, a really intellegent jump start to my already therapy-laded career on two wheels. Before ya'alls start ripping me and laughing, I made it back to the park in 13 hours. It was so late that all the tents and drink/aid stations were broken down already and no one was there to give me the finishing sticker and patch kit. I had no idea where any of my friends were and then I had to ride home from Pearl City to Kaimuki valley. But I finished the thing. A one-time blunder of epic proportions, but fame inspired.. so this contributed to the emptiness, perhaps.

The patch kit shown is from 1981. This was the second consecutive year I did the ride and this time around I actually prepared a little bit more. Same start and route. Jeffrey Kang came with us this time and he finished first among our group. I remember losing sight of him in Haleiwa town and watched him climb away on Pineapple Hill. Danny Lee also was near me after like 80 miles and I left him on the big hill. I stopped in Waiawa at my girlfriend's house at the time. She was freaking out, seriously! Like what, you RODE here in the Century Ride?? Do you need water or a strait jacket?? Hung around for a bit and headed down to the park. Got my sticker and patches! I believe my time was around 10.5 hours, still horrible, but there were people trailing in behind me. This was a proud moment because way back at like the 35 mile mark I actually cramped up and rolled to a stop, fell into some weeds on the side of the road in Waimanalo and wondered what the hail I was doing to myself. Didn't I learn my own miserable lesson the previous year? But I pressed on and did it. Yup, sharp as a porcupine was I... a real meaning of citation for sure.

Someday I hope that Jeff Kang, Raymond, Mark or any of the old gang finds this website because those Century Rides on BMX bikes was quite simply put.. outrageous. Mentally deranged.

Anyone else do early 80's centuries on a BMX bike?

The long-lost glow worms from my continually-growling stomach sends their regards.

P-- I know what you mean by not being prepared! I rode from Waipahu to Waimanalo on the same route in 1981 on a dare from my cousin that was visiting from California. Nickle chrome Mongoose with 43x16 gears with only a backpack of juice, M&M's , one peanut butter sandwich and $1.00 to my name just incase I had to make a phone call. I did tell this story before in this forum but I think it was pretty funny telling it. Another thing that I remember through this journey is that I ran into Bill Cosby jogging somewhere in Waialae area. I didn't stop and talk to him just waved and said Hi Bill! but I think it was funny out of all places and what I was doing at the time. I did want to ride around the whole island and do a couple day trek on a bmx bike back then, but never did it because moving to the mainland. Just imagine if we gotten into road bikes... the miles we would have covered and in less time. Fun Stuff!!!! I'm starting to get in touch with other guys from Hawaii that live here in California through this site. Sometime during the late 80's, Chang, Klaus, Sugi??, and I did 50 miles at the Century Ride. We were planning to do 100, but we got there about an hour after the official start, a little too late to do 100 (we didn't even pay to ride the event, we just crashed it). I remember Chang and Klaus ditching me when I had a major cramp for a couple miles (that's what happens when you decide to do a long ride after not biking for awhile). Once I recovered, I morphed into Greg Lemond and blew past the two to the finish line. That's my story as I remember it...

I work in the area so I can maybe go visit? Hopefully he won't think I'm nuts like I think Sano did when I showed up at his work place telling him about us riding again.

SO No. 1's coming back: Rory, Rockne, Moki........Who's next?

Only 2 more to get on here to have all the original Hawaii BMX #1's. Just Llacuna and Sano left. Then the start of the ABA chapter in Hawaii BMX history. HO boy, that is a sweet one-hander there dude!

In the event you do chance the Tinman, be sure to throw a wheelie down the back side of Diamond Head road.. that would be epic.. actually, I think I saw Barry Uyeno riding the Century in the 90s with a 20 incher, modified with 3-gears or something. I didn't get a good look as I was going the other way back from Swanzy.. on a fat-tired mountain bike then.

Was that Barry?? Maybe the chain gang Sugi, Klaus can answer this?

Hey there OldSchool BMXJoe... unforgettable story.. **high fives**

Your steed sounded like mine, Goose with 43x16, hope your wheel was not taco'ed like mine! I have to say, one dollar was more than what I had in my pocket though:)

The Bill Cosby thing is hilarious, are you sure the eyes were not hallucinating then?? If you and I had gotten into road bikes at that year of life, we would have ripped for sure.. everybody on this thread for that matter.. BMX gives the fast twitch muscles some great tuning for sprints..

Speaking of pics, I have another I dug from deep in the caverns of my seemingly infinite stash. Not good quality, but I finally scanned it in.

Shot at Kaimuki High School, in the back near the ballfield. Now occupied by a walking path.

Hey, any BMX ride that far means great bike riding shape for sure. It might have been the late 80s when I saw Barry on the Century, I bought my Diamond Back mountain bike in like 88 or 89.. what ever the case, I swear I spied a 20 incher on a Century and it was remarkable.

Death is the certain end of all men folks. Brutus of Voltaire is of the Ancients, but like our old friends Noah and his offspring.. once the dust settles, the bones stop quaking and the knees quit knocking. Existence also fails, cognitively speaking. We cease to lurk and cannot bang our heads against the walls either. This is a sad condition. So please post 007. Share your memories!

007 likes his SHAKEN and not STIRRED, make an action note JK..

hahaha..

No lurking allowed, though I believe RT can be quoted as expelling this gem:

I won't say anything unless it is of high-quality, grade A words, such that the world may share in its merit and virtues, where pen and keyboard awaken the full tumult of emotion and form, never to be forgotten and infinitely poetic, sailing quotations on a Shakesperean ship of titanic proportions, dodging and weaving among icebergs of frosty historians, anchoring in harbors of finality. Lie within my breasts of uttered prose and milk me, sayith RT. For I have spoken.

just joking..

Seeing we are surrounded by all the Hawaiian old-school BMX number ones, this symbolizes Horton and he has certainly heard a WHO after all..

Your unknown dirt bunny historian..

I work in the area so I can maybe go visit? Hopefully he won't think I'm nuts like I think Sano did when I showed up at his work place telling him about us riding again.

SO No. 1's coming back: Rory, Rockne, Moki........Who's next?

jk

Jeremy-- If you talk to Moki tell him that Buddy Alvarico just got back in touch with me after all of these years through classmates. He will remember Buddy and me and I think also Robert Daclison from Waipahu. Also Moki was the guy that beat me on long distance jump contest at Great Outdoors Freestyle contest. I can send some stuff to help him out! let me know what you guys need. As for Llacuna I can let him borrow my Smoke Chrome Pro Class just like the one he had back then to ride! biggrin.gif

PNUT abuses Mother Earth and kisses the sky:

I have more black and white negatives of this jumping place, still must get them developed. Love to peer back into time and laugh about the old times!

BTW, I'm allergic to peanut butter LOL...

P- Yeah it was Bill Cosby himself! I stared at him while I past him. Nice Pic! one of my most favorite jumping styles! I remember trying to get that jump so tucked that you would get a little higher! My chin would be right at the seat. I remember trying to kiss the seat at the highest point. Like that Hawaiian red dirt dust trailing!

I'm allergic to mango juice! I remember always picking mangos then getting this mean rash on my arms and neck. Come to find out right after you pick it from the tree the juice shoots out from where you break it at the branch and sprays on my skin.

Roseville is tomorrow and me and Marlo are heading out together to check it out. I have not heard from Buddy Ikeda, Kenny Brown or Rogelio ( Roger ) Serafin. If you guys are heading out there are just gonna check it out fast kind, then give me a call! You guys got my number! Maybe we can hang out for lunch and talk story for a bit after the event.

Mililani to Cannons ..whoa

Hey, any BMX ride that far means great bike riding shape for sure. It might have been the late 80s when I saw Barry on the Century, I bought my Diamond Back mountain bike in like 88 or 89.. what ever the case, I swear I spied a 20 incher on a Century and it was remarkable.

Speaking of State Capitol, did you guys go jumping off those walls too?

wacko.gif

After seeing guys jump off the Washington Intermediate roof, I would not doubt it.. too much heavy metal and Pink Floyd, maybe..

OR some of these cute consumable patterns?

-p

.....

No, we never really did stop at the Capitol to ride.It was just on our way to meet the "Townies".I never did jump off the Washington Intermediate Bus Stop roof but I remember Barry,Walter,Tyson,etc...doing it.Riding to town from Mililani was definitely a highlight of my youth.I remember eating Zippy's Rice with gravy and stealing snickers in our Big Gulps from Fastop and 7-11.Maybe that's what got Slavey into stealing at a early age.

As far as helping out Moki,I don't really have alot of parts but whatever I do have,he can have.Wow when we start the track, the 40 and over gate is going to be the who's who of Hawaii BMX.I can't wait.Any word fron Sano?Who was the other guy from Palisades that rode with Sano but was younger.I think he rode a Thruster.I remember he flipped his car at the bottom of the Palisades Hill. Was that Todd Takano?

Anyhbody know how to get in touch with other Milialnians like Shawn Horikawa,Henry Weeks,Todd Kanja,Garret ?.J get Celdon Basislio(Cambell days)back riding.

Anybody riding this Sunday?
Jason Chang
Other Palasades guys were Todd Takano and Adrian Lee. Garret Akasaki. I saw 2 very tricked out GT cruisers at Bikewerx easy $1400 bikes and then found out they belong to Henry and Shawn. Maybe up for this Sun. Side note what info do you need on my car besides year make and model?

I remember riding in something like a century ride in 1983 or '84. I think Klaus rode a mountain bike, I rode my bmx. It started in Kapiolani park and went thru Hawaii Kai, around Makapuu and thru Kailua to kaneohe then back to the finish at Kapiolani Park. I remember stopping at Joe's ramp in Kailua to do a few airs on his ramp and doing some flatland at the half-way turn. Major cramps in the legs coming back thru Hawaii Kai and just feeling like going home to sleep when I got back to town. I think Slavey and Chang also went on that ride.
