Anyone check out the old Newtown track lately? Maybe we can build something there?
there is a couple of little ones still left, but the ground is soft since they dozed the whole area. there is access to water, and the grass is growing tall so no one can see a thing.

Maybe if we talk to the neighborhood board and get approval we wont have to ninja. Catch 22 though....they might tell us no. Or we can bug Mufi since he lives in Aiea.

Hey JK-
You're absolutely right about the DVDs, I bought one each of his entire set. Arrived this past Friday and I've watched all of them except the 1984 and later ones.. will get to those soon.
Man, what memories, I appear myself (number 512) on 4 of them including the Kauai Championships. My cousin Kerry Kamaunu (406) won the 16+ Novice class then and Mark Miyashiro (202) my mate got 2nd. I got blistered out with a 3rd/6th/3rd on the rainy second day. What a trip, I even forgot about the first day of racing with that downhill, blazing first lefthander turn on that grassy field. Gosh dang, I was tall and skinny as a pole LOL..
Barry Nobriga (204), Raymond Motosue (106), Mark Miyashiro (202), and Timothy Lee (501) are all on there, along with a whole host of guys we all knew and loved. It was fairly good footage considering the timeframe and materials in the era + all the sounds of the dirt like power slides, rocks flying about, bodies hitting the ground during crashes and spectators yelling out encouragement to the riders by name! Great stuff, I say buy those DVDs and support JT. This is pure unadulterated BMX at the hardest core of the great and bygone 70s/80s.
The only thing missing on any DVDs of the Hawaiian BMX roots are video captured jumping at the raddest spots ever graced by the old-dirt bunny flyers of old. That would have been truely epic.
We still have the still pics though. PNUT captured at Hickam AFB:

With the front Tuff Wheel, I am caught up here -- even raced like that.
I rode out to Haunama Bay on Sunday morning and took the left near the firing range. Got to see the HK track, and boy that looks sweet -- GOOD JOB you guys out there!
One kid with a blue full-face helmet was riding there and his dad was video taping him. Gotta say, those jumps look inviting LOL.. I miss my road bike though, I had been sick for the last 6 weeks on and off, so that sucked rocks..
Man, I watched those DVDs over and over again.. Rockne, you are one smooth rider.. I remembered Robert Williams too, he was pretty fast, along with Toby Tsukamoto.. I got to race against them both. Hot dog, those were the days.. cool stuff..

P,
Yup! Jim's DVD's are definately gems. I just watched one of them again yesterday. Isn't it a trip to see yourself as a kid racing. I didn't remember alot of the races I watched even though I am in it. And there are even a few that I remember differently. I am so grateful that Jim took the time that he did to tape the races and keep them all these years. You can't go back but watching those DVD's sure brings you close.
Killer one haded table! You gotta get back on the dirt and respark that hibernating jumping beast inside of you! I must have just left the HK track when you got there. When the kid with the blue helmet came I left. I flat spotted my rear Araya and then pinch flatted my rear tube. So, I figured it was time to go. Would have been cool to run into you there. You could have rode the track on my bike. Oh, well ......next time.
By the way I am glad I'm not the only one crazy enough to watch those DVD's over and over again. I love watching them though.......I can almost smell the dirt!

Checking in from the mid 80's to early 90's. I remember racing Chang, Sano, Spanky, Moki & Miki. I didnt realize how long those guys had been racing when I arrived on the scene. Moki was one of the fastest and squirliest riders I had ever come across. My first broken bone was me and him over the doubles going into the first turn at Hawaii Kai. We flew over the jump and came across from the outside to the inside and we locked up in mid-air and both bailed. Unfortunatley, I came down on my hands and busted my wrist. Ended up racing with a cast on for about 6 weeks.
Good to see all the old guys getting together. Wish I was there. My sister moved back about 2 years ago to Pearl City, so I have to visit sometime soon.
Last words: Tantalus in the rain!!! I thought I was going to die that day!

Jason Montgomery??? If it is, then let me tell you all that he is another part time local like Shannon, that was very fast and I think also earned a #1 plate while here. I remember driving the backhoe all night changing the track. Even took it down Nimitz hwy to fill up gas. Just a bunch of riders let loose at 3:00 in the morning with a backhoe, SCARRY.

yep, it's me, Jason Montgomery. I remember working on the track at all crazy hours. Thats how we built the ganja doubles! Since my Dad ran the track for a few years i didn't get much of a choice but to go out and run the water cannon at 2AM sometimes. He's doing good and lives about 15 miles away from me in Dallas. I also remeber driving Shane Vincent's dad's monster truck to pack the track one day and burned out his clutch! We had to push that bad boy back to the flightline on Hickam. That sucked! I saw recently Shane had gone over to Irag and his hummer was hit with an IED. Lost one of the guys in the truck and he came back in pretty bad shape. He underwent lots of physical therapy and is back home in Oklahoma now with his wife. I heard he was doing real good in BMX and there was a fundraiser or something for him in chandler. Thumperpilot could prolly speak to that.
Man I miss the days from back when. Life was simple and all the racing we could handle on 4 different islands. Have to get back sometime soon. I was going to come over a couple years back and work interferred. I do a bit of travelling to foreign countries and just haven't made the time to come back. Good to see all the folks on here reminiscing. I truly miss you guys.
btw, I did get a number one district plate and about 6 state championships, with one of those in crusier.

My family has a play date in Kailua, so I am going to drop them off at 3:00pm and get in a few hours at HK before going back to get them. Gonna try to do a little smoothing and packing. Unless a whole lot of guys are riding then I don't want to stop their fun by watering. I would think after the mornings race that not too many guys would be riding afterwards, or they would just hang out at Royal Summit. Believe me If I can work on HK for an hour it would be sweet, after trying to keep a 11,000 foot 25 foot wide race track smooth and fast I know I can get HK in good shape.

Jason-- Thats about the only dirt I ride at! Its City supported so it always stays the same. I have to give props to the guys who try to maintain it. City lags on paying them at times, but they still do it because they love what they do and also ride them too. Over here if you try to build or keep up a dirt jump place, chances are when you come back the next day or so it will be messed up by paint ballers, kids in general that don't care what it is, dirt bikes or other riders that don't like how its set up or how the lips are made etc.. So I don't even waste my time trying. There is a local legendary dirt jump spot since the early 80's that are still around.(T-Cups or Tee Cups.) Since the 90's it ended up being more occupied by bums and the homeless. At first everyone got along, but when dirt riding started to slow down in numbers in the 90's more homeless started to live out there and they got used to it. Then by the late 90's and up riders started showing up again, they didn't like it because they got used to it being there community.
Glad to see the Hawaii guys do there thing! Makes us mainland guys look forward to coming home to visit!

I don't remember where I heard that from but that wasn't the first I've heard of it.Lawrence would probally be the one to ask about that.He seems to be the one attending the meetings as well as in contact with the park keeper.---Do you know who the guy is who posted it?He must be one of the ol skool TGO guys.Good to see more guys from BITD coming out.

TG would be Terry Gomes. He has been trying to start a track for many years also. Have not been in contact with him recently so do not know status of his attempts. I do know that he is pushing for the NBL to sanction him. ABA has has refused to sanction a track run by him. I wish him luck and hope a track does open in addition to the group I am involved in. I know first hand what it is like to operate a track, and it is very hard and needs many volunteers to make it work. So I would love to go to a track and not worry about track prep, registration, grumpy parents, and tons of paperwork. I can just ride, race and have a good time. I will continue my efforts to open a track and know what I face to get it done right. BMX is in my soul so my efforts will show that. I also have a great support group behind me and I am sure this group will grow as I see more interest in BMX right now from many, all we need is a place to finally say start building. I think it may still be awhile, but the state could surprise us, and having BMX in the Olympics this year will boost interest big time and we can say "why doesn't Hawaii have that sport" maybe that would get the attention of state officials.

Hey I call that erosion maintenance. Well we gotta start some time on NT even if it may be more building than riding the first few trips out there. But being closer to where we all live it should also buy us more time as we don't have to make that long drive back and forth. I still think we could help out at HK a little bit. It would not take much to get it much better. I have a screen drag that is used on baseball fields and makes a smooth path about 2 foot wide. Takes out all the rocks too. I used to use it at the old track. Anyway, I think a few passes over HK and some water would smooth it out and pack it. We could double the width of the lips and landings in about 10 minutes per jump. One or two passes on the straightaways would smooth that too. Turns have to be done with a broom and water. Having a 2 places to ride will keep us from getting bored and help to get more riders out, that they have at least one place that is closer to home. I work this Sun, but would come out as soon as I can. Looks like JK has a wheel barrel, so a few shovels a lot of water hose and the building begins. I can get more hose too if some one can store them. Right now I have 250 feet of hose and can get another 100 or 150 feet more. Not sure how much we need, but a trip to City Mill is just down the road.

You sure they weren't waiting for you to come in before they snapped the picture? After all, you're the one who could get the biggest airs.

If there will be a video night, can I get a PM with the details? I live in Honolulu. much love guys, thanks!

Sure thing......So who are you? Old School BMXer, freestyler? We need all the Hawaii riders we can get. Glad you dropped by.
Back to the video thing...Changstar and KevLau I need to talk to you guys about it. Maybe we can nudge this thing along.

Heck I would get together for the showing of "Joe Kid" even though I saw 10 times already. Actually when it seemed we were closer to opening the track I had the idea to show "Joe Kid"in a threater and do it as a fundraiser for the new track. But that went on the back burner when things seemed to slow down in getting permits. Maybe sometime in the future.

Wasn't that called "Stadium Jump"?Remember Davey breaking the headtube clean off his frame and eating a face full of dirt there?----Ah,the good ol' days.
How about pictures of "Dip Jump"?
Oh my....I remember this vividly. After cleaning the dirt from from in between my teeth, I said "I didn't even land that hard"....yah...sure I didn't land hard.

Wassup everyone,
Love to see the Mililani gang remembering the old school days here on this site. I found this site through the bmxhawaii.com forum. I was googling my name trying to make sure I am not on the "most wanted" list or any advertisement trying to sell things that make your penis larger. Luckily for me, I found my name attached to a BITD Hawaii BMX DVD that someone is putting out. How do I get one? Gotta brag out the good-ol-days while I sit on my couch eating bon-bons.
I just had a chance to reminise with Chang and Sugi a few hours ago. Wow, this site is going to get me severly hurt if I venture back onto a bmx bike. Riding my mountain bike every few months does not constitue being in shape (unless the shape is a circle, nah I'm only 153 now), so I may need to step it up if I think I wanna re-live the past. Eventhough I am the youngest, my memory of those days are very fuzzy...must be the older kids I hung out with in High School that got me hooked on beer/rum that shrouded my memory.
I still remember Medussa, Stadium Jump, Dip Jump, Tantalus, Sand Jumps at the constuction site, jump near Waena, homemade quarter pipes in the pineapple fields where Andy learned his skills, Keehi Lagoon, Hickam, Wahiawa, trips to town, Kauai, freestyle shows feeling like a Rock Star, freestyle contest/massive quarter pipe in Kailua, sponsored by HIC, all of us getting dumped by HIC, Mongoose, Hutch, my blue bike, bending rims, trying to fix bent rims, da Mililani gangs Haro gear, Pea Scanlan, etc...
Those were the days...

davey u makes an appearance. this is the only guy who could wear a pair of grips in a day, and didn't know how to fix his bike, but won many races cause he was big for his age, until he stunted his growth with alcohol consumption.

here he is at the hickam track

Wassup Klaus,
When you going make me a bike?
Love the pic...how's da holeshot? I have you guys to blame for stunting my growth. A;sp. back in the day, they didn't make grips too good.
