Sorry I couldn't make it guys. I was real bummed since Rory was there. But, JT was kind enough to send me some pics though. Rory you look good! Still smooth as usual I bet!

Heres the pics from JT:

Howzit everybody! I had a good time, and met some people from a long time ago. Jason from Kauai, Lawrence who said he used to watch us ride when we were 15 years old. Jim came over and gave me a dvd from the stone age. Jumps were a little sketchy, my son was making me look silly, which is a good thing. Had one crash, you can see the cherry on my knee....my wife got on me for that. Jason, Kevin, Sugi, Higuchi, you guys still got some skill. All in all the track was fun, and I'll be back there another day................... Rory

Lawrence and his gang were working on the lower berm yesterday. Its getting alot better. The guy's put alot of work into the track. I thought you guys would like to see a pic. Here it is during the build.

If you guys are looking to build lip launchers as well, call Zed, that guy knows how to build trails!

Funny that the kids call jumps trails now days.

I remember taking the trail down to the jumps.....funny how things change!

Whats up Rory? Still looking good after all of these years! Don't know if you remember us Waipahu riders that used to stop in the Bike Shop every weekend or week back in the 80's, but my friend Robert Daclison used to copy your riding style back then. I think you were one of his favorite riders back then. He still lives in Hawaii and is currently working for HPD. I met a few guys here at the new skatepark here in San Jose that are from Hawaii. One guy named Marlo that used to ride back in the 80's in Hawaii. He was also at one of the Great OutDoors freestyle show and contest that they used to have back then. His son rides skateboards and he was thinking about getting back to riding a bike. I told him about this site and forum so I hope he can post up and tell some bmx storys. The others guys I have not been properly introduced, but one wants to get back into riding as well and the other is a skateboarder. Hopefully we can get a good following in the mainland here and others will join up with us. Either it be collecting and building old school bmx bikes or guys that want to get back into riding a bike again. Anything that is bmx related is all good!

It was good seeing Rory,Royce, his nephew and Jim(thanks fo taking the pics)this weekend.Rory can still ride.Royce definitely has his dads bmx blood in him.
We need to get together more often.I allmost went down twice this Sunday.I had a couple feet off the pedals holding on for dear life moments.I hope nobody saw.I guess it takes more than two sessions to shake off twenty plus years of rust.
Let's ride,Small Lance.

That bike on the right is a one off Kevin design under his garage company "Black Lightning", it is a one speed with 26inch wheels and rides like a BMX bike. You could put that bike in the cruiser class and feel just fine. Seriously the best 26 I have ever rode. So far the jumps at HK are small and lippy, mellower than a full on trails in the mainland but more lippy than a race track. Kinda inbetween. Just gotta link the sections together, right now you just hit one section, then go back to the top to hit another. Every time we go out there are more new faces riding, I hope this continues and even help to get a new track sooner. This is just like how most tracks started, with just some people building some jumps and riding, then moving into opening a race track. In a way we are seeing the interest building then leading to a track, instead of the other way around. Build a track and then try to build interest. The only thing different is the interest is starting from the old guys first and then the younger kids, other than our own kids there was not any young BMXers out. But we will have a killer older cruiser class when the track opens. Things have come full circle for me and now I start a new circle.

Yo Rory,

What up!! I'm not sure if you'll remember me. Me met plenty of times at the Hickam BMX track in the early 90's. Your nephew Roland was riding a lot back then. You always came out and rode but never really raced much back then. I always thought you were a super nice guy and it was always fun to talk with you about the good old days on Hawaii BMX. Anyway, I just wanted to say aloha and it's great to see you guys getting back on the bike. looks like Leasure and I might have to make a trip out there and hit that place up!

I never did feel the desire to own a mountain bike and probally never will but kevlau's 26"er is one sweet ride.If his Black Lightning BMX stuff rides as well(I'm sure it will),he's going to be having alot of people wanting his stuff.

Thumper, was that what my nephews called you? If it was, I kinda remember who you are. Old age is getting to me. Good to hear all the kind words from all of you. I race a little at Hickam with Jason guys, just to see what I could do. It would be unreal to get all the OLD guys to come out, Wakatake, Wandell, Dale Farias, Carmack, Benigno, and all you guys in the mainland, if only just for a day! Maybe set up a picnic or something at the park. One day......................Rory

I have not seen Marlo since sunday at the skatepark. I told him about this website and forum to check it out. I mentioned some names from here and he responded with other guys names as well. So it might be the same Marlo that some of you guys know. Good thing I got his number so by the next session I can have a bike ready for him if he's interested in riding. If so I think he will be looking to buy one for himself, but will see. I told him once you start riding again you will feel like your 15 years old again!
Jeremy K.
So several of the old school BMXer's mentioned a get together. Maybe a BBQ. Let's get it done.

Who can contact who? Like Rory said finding the old heavy hitters like Wakatake, Farias, Saito, Sano, Okimoto would be killer!

I think P still keeps in touch with Richard Okimoto. Rory is in touch with Malvert and Larry Carmack. I still keep in touch with Rockne, Rolland, Russell, Roger Nitta, Alex Adams, Alika Akiona, and Jim Tomitagawa. Buddy, Philipart, Clarence, Michael T, Wandell and a bunch of others drop in from time to time. I think JT can contact Niall Silva, Dean Young and Alika Akiona. Hows about Faye, Dennis, Cy Shinkawa, Ken Sugai? I'll try and track down Darius and Bill Kono and Isaac Killelehua. I know where Sano works. Changstar and Kevlau have a lot of contacts still.

Anyone know the whereabouts of Moki, Miki, and Llacuna?

Maybe even get the local bike shops involved somehow?

We need to start a email list. PM me with your emails and phone numbers. Here's mine lughead55@yahoo.com

KDen,

Jeremy K.
You guys remember the nicknames the announcer gave some of the guys?

Rockne "Rocket" Tang
Scott "Second Gear" Iha
Malvert "Madman" Benigno

Anyone remember any others?

I'm down for something like that.I'm not available every weekend though. We could probally put together something in the parking lot area on the grass at HK.We might have to get it approved by the comittee though rolleyes.gif .

You guys remember when JT from Safari Cycles used to video the races back in the 70's and 80's? We used to go to Safari Cycles the Monday after a race and watch the video. You ever wonder where those video's went? Ever wish you could watch yourself race in the heyday of BMX? Well I got good news for you guys but you gotta act now.

JT was kind enough to transfer those video's to DVD. I have watched most of them already. I dig old Hawaii BMX pics but, the DVD's just blow me away. I've watched races of Rory, Malvert, Moki, Miki, Buddy, Chang, Rolland, Gabe Cruz, Alex Adams, Phillipart, Bo Ikeda, Ken Van Orman, Stuart Saito, Dean Young, Eric Kono, Russel, Roger NItta, Kevin Murnin, Sano, Jarrel Chun Ming, Ryan Cordeiro, Llayne Nishimiya.......Just to name a few. There's even footage of Rory beating Stu Thompsen!!! So if you raced back then would you be interested in seeing the DVD's. If you are on this website why wouldn't you be right?

Well I got good news and I got bad news. JT gave me the OK to let you guys know that he has them on his hard drive right now. But, he has to erase them since he needs the space for more jobs. He's going to erase them in 30 days. And they will be gone. So you gotta act now if you are interested. I can't post the price on this thread because of the forum rules. But, you can email Jim at:

racerv@aloha.net

He will have a detailed list of the DVD's soon and I will post it as soon as I get it. Let me just tell you this..... I have everyone that he transferred so far. I have watched them over and over. The price is very, very, very, very minimal. Watching them is absolutely PRICELESS!

Don't miss this chance!!!!!!!

Glad you emailed Jim about the DVD's!

Dope pics as always! I especially love the one of your neighbor. Scott Mask, Mongoose Jersey, Nickle Plated frame, Red Arayas, Tape around the ankles to keep the cords out of the sprocket, garden gloves, patches sewn on the jersey, VBars, Double clamp stem.......Oh yeah! Thats how we rolled!

"Jesus loved Tuff Wheels" That's a cool saying right there. That would look awesome on a tshirt with a tuff wheel on it. I would buy a few! I never understood your defiance of gravity. Definately ahead of the times. I never even came clost to pulling moves like that! Glad you have all those pics to bring back the memories. I can't wait to see you on the dirt again.

Howzit to everyone in Hawaii!! Yeah I'm that Marlo and I've been out of the game for 15 years and thanks to Joe got the inspiration to jump back in. Nice to see that there are guys from back when i rode still keeping it alive in Hawaii. I remember Kevin and Jason back in the day, they used to rip it up at the old BMX track in Hickam. I have'nt seen Dennis in long a time, anyone know what's he up too?

Check you all out later..

Anyone interested in running in a BMX class in an upcoming mtb race at Royal Summit. If I can drum up any interest I am sure they will let us run.

OK JT SPENT A GREAT DEAL OF TIME MAKING A DETAILED LIST OF THE DVD'S HERE IT IS:

BMX Videos on DVD
1979 to 1985

8. Waipahu & HBMX
A. Waipahu BMX circa 1980 (23 MIN)
Riders include Marc Kawakami, Rick Takeshita, Ken Van Orman, Barry Ikeda, Kevin Sano, Stuart Saito, Jeremy Kam, Roger Nitta, Dean Young, Moki Fernandez, Kimo Akiona and John Llacuna.

If this race was in the back part of the Waipahu Gym, then I was there! Didn't have no Bmx bike because it got stolen, so I was on my sisters huffy.

Jeremy--- Thats cool that your wife is being a part of this! Next thing to learn is cross up or small table tops!

Marlo--Glad to see that you finally post! By the end of this week I'll be on day shift so now we can do some riding!

Kevin Lau,

Did you put my measurements and advice to the section? Let me know how it worked out if so!

Off to Rockford tomorrow for the national, I wish I was going to the Olympic Trials in Chula Vista.

gl,

i didn't put any more work yet. it took jeremy and myself an hour and a half to make the small one foot tall whoop. we had one shove, one pick, and one evian bottle for water. it ain't national caliber yet. plus, some locals don't like any changes. has to be approved by the "hawaii kai loose dirt cat poop jump track" board of directors. and we need Clayton John to sign the petition change form.

"Flight Path" is getting so much air off of the jumps there now that he can't afford any more obstructions in his way.
