I remember the budget meal was plain rice with brown gravy on it from Zippy's, about 99 cents. Did you guys wash your bikes off at the board of water supply fountain or little pool thing at the bottom of the trail after a muddy Tantalus ride. We must have wrecked the filter system that thing after about 20 muddy bikes got washed off.

Changstar

You forgot to mention the "dog drag race" at the end.Was so funny to see the new guys $hit their pants when they was two huge dogs come charging.---Tantalus was the best.

BMX gave all of us great memories huh? Everyone crashes or crashed on the Tantalus trail. We especially liked the beginning of the trail where it was wider. We would ride that section several times when we were up there. Did you guys also hit the Makiki Trail or go down on the road?

Yup, no work, bills, stress, motgage, car payment...the days of riding bmx were pure. I'd go back in a heartbeat.

jk

We use to walk up the white road on the left to the antennas then drop in on a narrow Bamboo lined trail. This trail would lead to a road where we would drop into another trail. This trail had that nasty switchback that Chang mentioned.I would say both trail together use to take at least an hour.My memory may not be as good as Chang's and Lau's due to the multiple concusions from riding. rolleyes.gif

Sugi,

Great one! What was the malfunction with those two dogs anyway. I would tap my friends brakes when they came charging then sprint away. We would all just scream and laugh at the same time. Some funny s_it. You are right. Was funny watching some unsuspecting new guy get initiated.

KL where you gonna take the park bike to ride? Got anything for dirt? Looks like I may have to take a drive out to Hawaii Kai, sounds like fun. Can't have JK and Rock have all the fun. Some Bengay and a pocket full of Advill and I'm set. Welcome to Rory. Please share some pics and stories.

Gathering was a good turn out yesterday! Plenty of food and bike storys to be told. You had guys that rode in the 80's 90's and today, so it was an all around rider kind of event. The younger guys dug the 80's color combo on some of the freestyle bikes. Also there was a few that tried to ride 85 GT Performer around. When told that Eddie Fiola rode that same type of bike with Skyways back then that hit the highest air contest at the Pipeline Skatepark at a near 9 1/2 ft, they were amazed!

As quoted by my friend Chris McMahon on his website sjbmx.com:
The old-school BBQ today at Cali was pretty rad; a whole bunch of guys showed up, including both Old School Joes, Maurice Meyer, JP from Political Gridlock, and George from Knight with a wide assortment of NOS and replica bikes.

Oh yeah! I go by Old School Joe because when I started to get back into riding I was known for my old school bikes and my old school style of riding. So the name Old School was adapted and to seperate myself from the other Joes since Joe is a common name and you can get them mixed up with others.

There is talk of another one maybe being in San Fransico at Golden Gate Park. This time it might go towards a riding event or jam. Goldent Gate Park was known for its famous Freestyle jams back in the 80's and Maurice Meyers wanted to do this for sometime. Maurice was local freestyle and was on the Skyway Freestyle Team in the 80's. I'm sorry for going off the subject on this topic "All things Hawaiian" but I just wanted to share this experience and hope you guys can get a good following. If it grows some of us mainland guys can schedule our Hawaiian vacations around these gathering times. Vacations also have to be done in advance so scheduleing is important. Either it be just meeting up, ride or even at a BMX race event at the track I'm sure it be worth the effort. Maybe at an event we can have some kind of vintage racing with us old guys. See who is the fastest now! I would like to come down and be a part of that met you guys and get aquinted with those I known, also I can pass word to those I have somewhat contact with in Hawaii to be a part as well. Some of you guys are starting or trying to meet up which is a start and that is good. It's an idea and a dream!

So tell us a little more about HK.

Changstar,

Here's a link to a thread of the HK track. Those MTBers put a lot of effort into the track. Looks like they are doing more work on it. You might be able to get a good idea on how the HK track is from this websites other threads too.

Hope this helps.

Being that it is probably easier for us to plan a date, you guys over there should pick a time and come over. Then we on this end will plan stuff to do. Give us a little lead time to put things together and I am sure we will have some fun. Klaus, what days do you go riding? I usually have Tue and Thurs off, but I get out early on weekends so there is some time there too. I do have a 20 inch, but I put it back to stock and trying to sell it. Anyone looking for a Nirve with a 20.5 TT? Rides really good but has a Large BB and I want one with a small threaded one. By the way, can you guys all check out my post on BMX today thread, called "kids with heart defects"

Changstar,

Thats a sweet Robinson. I have a relative that has one of Rory's old Robinson's with first gen Araya's and Tuf Neck. I'll Try to get pics next time I visit him.

I checked Royal Summit out once. Some Jumps and berms, all downhill - real fun! I heard you can ride up St. Louis too.

Nevermind the pics, get the whole bike from them. You can start on that museum. I don't have complete bikes but I do have a bunch of parts that I can show. I could have a parts museum. Still can't post on bmxhawaii yet. But we have had real accurite time trials under very controlled circumstances. Rory clocked the best time out of many top riders from about 1986.

JJ, where you been? For those who do not know. JJ is an all around encyclopedia of BMX and has deep knowledge in Hawaii's BMX history too. How he knows this is a mystery to me since he never raced here. Did you see the pic of Rockne from last week and his bike?

If you need them just for show, then you can borrow them, but I still want to own them. Can you believe I was offered $500 for them. I still have the Sonlite Turbo hubs too. Let me think what else I have.
DX brake levers
Cook Bros BB
Avocet alum cranks (never used)
Pro Class rims 24"
79 Mongoose frame
Kashimax seat
1986 Redline flight crank single pinch bolt
MX 1000 brakes
Oakley 3 grips , big elephant ear, shaped to the hand
Probably more that I don't remember.

Tell us more about Long Beach, how did your racing go? Who else went and how did they do?

Changstar,

From what I remember these are the guys that went.....Rockne, Sano, Moki, Phillipart, Eric Kono, and myself. TBS and TGO guys also hit some local night race right before the Nat. Rockne won the trophy dash at that one. At the Nats Rockne made both mains as well as Eric Kono and Moki. In the 14-15 open main 3 Hawaii guys were on the gate......Rockne, Phillipart and myself. We never made the top 3 though. Pistol Pete won the main.

McCully team stayed at Larry Ruiz's (factrory Rhino) in San Jose. We then rode in his parents motorhome to Long Beach. We also got to hang with Scott Clark who was good buddies with Ruiz. Clark took me for a ride in his mini truck one night and scared the c rap out of me when he did a 360 on a dead end street. All in all the trip was a great time. I hope to go to the mainland again sometime soon to race. rolleyes.gif

most times we took the white road to the manoa cliff trail, but some times we took the puu ohia trail to the top. it crossed the road to the makiki valley trail

Did you ever see a rider make it up the white road? That beast is so steep, I've always ended up walking alot of the parts, up till the antennae (someone else mentioned this), then riding down either of the choices up there. That white road is sick..

QUOTE
which ended with "roots and rocks" to the nature center, where we washed up at the bathroom, or just dunked our bikes in the pool at the board of water supply.

Definately remember this one, just aweful on a BMX bike, that section. Poor city workers, having to clean out our muddy mess in that pool.. yeah, I'm guilty, our gang did the holy baptism thing in there too, left it looking like the Ala Wai canal.. yuk!

QUOTE
later on, in the mtb days, we took top downhill pros down "roots and rocks" and they were impressed how rough it was, even with their 6" works suspension!

I don't doubt that!

I have a beef with these mountain bike Pros though.. having the audacity to ride up from behind me on K-Hwy some time ago, this one guy that was here in the islands to do some race.. I joke not, I was blazing about 28-30mph on my road bike coming back from Hawaii Kai and I hear this loud buzzing sound, dirt knobbies, for sure, coming up from behind me. So I turn and this Pro mountain biker rides up next to me (we slowed to like 25+) and he's saying hello and all, without missing a breath, that was awesome.. nice dude though. Don't recall his name, maybe it was Jacob or Essau?

Howzit JK-

I've been away for a bit. Checked out a bike at Bike Factory, took it for a spin. The Haro Hyquist F24, cool ride for sure. Need to figure out if I can store it someplace and also if that is really what I want for playing around with again.

I've wiped out on Tantalus numerous times, for sure. Even in that lower section below root and rocks, where that long pipe on the left side runs, when wet can be critical!

Couple of nights ago, I had a dream where I was popping serious pancake airs and it was fun LOL, then again this was a dream, mind you. It was very cool though.

Don't think I'll ever be doing this again though:

That is Tayne Toma and Raymond Motosue gazing at my crazy arial jump - Hickam AFB.

Last week I had both the pleasure and honor of lunching with another longtime BMX friend, from back in the 70s, Clarence W. He rode in the era when Guy Yoshimura, Hanalei, Michael Woo and David Wakatake was riding along. I recall Gabriel Moniz too, a member of Palolo Riders. It was nice to catch up after all these years, that guy was a talented bike rider then, a Triangles animal. He remembers Stason Hayashida (and his older brother Eric) who rode a Roger DeCoster. There was another guy named Kahea Woods too, lived in the back part of Palolo Valley. I bought a used DG fork from him and broke it the same day, went back to demand my money back LOL..

Mark Diaz, I can picture him as a little guy who rode a yellow DG bike too. There was another friend of mine who lived on 9th ave, rode a Webco frame, Michael Minatoya. Wonder what happened to that guy??

Speaking of purity and the BMX days gone by (Vegas music plays in the background), see this:

P,

Wow....You never seem to run out of incredible photo's.

Can't wait to see what bike you decide on. Just don't lock it with the same ill equipped lock like you did back in college. Hopefully we will ride together real soon. I've been slowly tweaking the Team Jag to make it more rideable for my fat a ss. Avoiding the path that you are no doubt smarter in taking. That is to venture into the darkside and buy a New School bike. Sooner or later that day will come for me. I think it's unavoidable. Trying to ride the bike of my youth is indeed awkward. But, I am bonehead that way and always take the hard way.

That's awesome that you hung with CW. No doubt brought back alot of good memories of our Triangles days. Hopefully CW will find some pics and post them. I hope work eases back for you soon.

Hey there JK-

Thanks for the kind reply.

I was joking with C-Dub, saying it costs a gorgeous penny to develop all these negatives - however they are indeed priceless!

Work + Negatives + Time = more pics

Plan on getting them developed over time, for sure - some shots are surprising, quite honestly.

Check my bolded points in your post. After riding that F24, I went for a long road ride and felt wayyy more comfortable in position. This is not uncommon though, I would gather. Just a bit squirrly, would take a long time to re-adjust once more. It's the knees rising up so high, even though I raised the seat and adjusted the bars (Dennis was there at the Bike Factory, no doubt surprised to see me) LOL.

I was joking with one of the firm secretaries the other day.. I told her that a calorie is technically a measure of heat, so if that holds true, and my fat [please review the site FAQs] is loaded with calories, then it must be hotter than heat LOL..

Anyways..

I hope to see C-Dub again soon, work is kicking my behind, but I love it!

Well my friend, I am off to see the Wizard in Las Vegas:

All of next week, so I'll be a bit off the cuff.

So I leave you with this:

OH YEAH, guess where this was shot? Your guess was as good as mine, but my [please review the site FAQs] looks pretty darn thin compared to these days

LOL

LOL

Peace out Chief, check ya later..

Hey JK, I hope you are serious about wanting to go to the mainland and do a race. I have wanted to do it again for a while but wanted a few others to go to. Even though I have many friends up there, it would be so much cooler to have a few locals to hang out with. Since we all are about the same age we probably race in the same class be it 20 inch or cruiser. By the way we would also have to race Greg Hill who races in the 41-45 cruiser. But it would be an honor to get on the gate with him, something I have never done. But I can say that I have raced Big Stu. Yep at a local at Orange county, CA. It was a Pro am. I did beans but took the moto sheet as a keepsake. If we get alot of us to go that should increse our odds of a few of us being in the main. I am reclassed in 20 inch and no longer expert, yes by ABA standards I am now an intermediate. But gotta swallow my pride and realize that is about the skill level I am at. You guys could probably race as novice if you want to, because you guys were away from it so long. I am inspired by guys like Greg and Stu for going out and still being fast and having a ton of fun. Something to look for ward too. Hey I thought you said you have a more modern Redline?

Changstar
Jeremy K.
Changstar,

Definately want to get more time on the bike and try and hit a mainland nat. If you are reclassed as a inter that means I should be a beginner. blush.gif I gotta convince Rockne to do it too. Would be awesome. I also heard there might be a ABA track starting up on the Big Isle. You know anything about it?

I do have a modern redline. I don't really care for the bike so I hardly ride it. It's probably just not set up right though. I'm looking to change the flights on my Jag to 175's so I might take the cranks off the redline. The 401's on the Jag are 180's. They feel a bit long for me. Could be that its on such a short bike too though.

Must have been awesome to gate with Stu!

My helmet came in today. Haven't seen it yet since I'm at work. But, I'm looking forward to learning to jump again. So now maybe I won't be so uncomfortable. I have been trying to manual but haven't been able to get it yet. I'm hoping to gain some confidence and skill to seriously make a trip to some nat.

P--Thanks for the dedication! Reminds me of the many pictures we took when I lived in Hawaii!
Can't wait till the others pics develop! At this past gathing I really wanted to go jumping and ride my bike which I can do anytime. But it was great chit chatting with everyone which only comes once in awhile. Gotta get more guys to get back into the riding part! New super big skatepark is open now, but not to the bikers. Hopefully if by next week they will be open to bikers, but if not I will have to dust the old board and do some skating. I don't skate that much, but I only do it because it works out your legs and body alot. Kind of a cross training because when I get back on a bike again I feel alot stronger.
So P-- you heading out to Vegas too? I'll be leaving this friday and returning on Sunday. Maybe we can meet up if you didn't already leave.

Jason Chang
Cannons will always stick out in my mind. I loved that jump and could spend all day there. One of only a few that I remember that you could hit at full speed and catch so much air time. If anyone can get in touch with the mid 80"s town guys they should have lots of pics. Guys like.......
Walter Watanabe (worm)
Barry Uyeno
Tyson Tahara
Gary (Pumpkin)
Joe Genovia
Keith Miyamoto (Beaker)
Kim (rode a Hutch)
Russel (rode a Robinson, Redline) Tetsutani????
and more I am sure I can't recall. Anyone know where these guys are now?

Cannons will always stick out in my mind. I loved that jump and could spend all day there. One of only a few that I remember that you could hit at full speed and catch so much air time. If anyone can get in touch with the mid 80"s town guys they should have lots of pics. Guys like.......
Walter Watanabe (worm) works at heco
Barry Uyeno works for the bus
Tyson mihara owns sticker pimps
Gary (Pumpkin) used to work for tokurritei, i think genki sushi now
Joe Genovia don't know, but still wearing slippers, aka slippa joe
Keith Miyamoto (Beaker) continental air mechanic
Kim (rode a Hutch) nakashima. used to teach sport bike racing
Russel (rode a Robinson, Redline) Tetsutani???? plumber
and more I am sure I can't recall. Anyone know where these guys are now?

jeremy,

what's up dude!

every now and then i google my own name to see what comes up. this time i hit this site.

i'm living in the sf bay area. eric philippart is living in carlsbad. i just called him tonight and told him about this site. he and i still keep in touch.

it's been years since i've seen you. i think i was in college when i saw you last. you, rockne and me went clubbing in waikiki. we got caught by a a military mp drinking beer in your car parked at ft. derussy parking lot. i thought we were going to jail...or getting the crap beat outta us.

you don't see rockne anymore? i figured you two are still hanging out, still partying.

Buddy,

Wow! Long time old friend. Hope all is well with you and your family. Glad to hear from you. I definately remember Fort Derussy. We weaseled our way out of that one. I am hanging with Rockne again. We are a little too old to club.....Don't want to be the old dude in the club. Every club has one. But, believe it or not we started to ride again. Rockne kept his goose all these years and is slowly restoring it. Glad to hear you and Phillipart are still in touch. Hope you got to see all the cool pics I posted of you, Bo and Phillipart. There's more old pics on BMXHawaii.com. Make sure you get in touch with me or Rockne when you come back to the islands. Be awesome for all of us to catch up. Tell Phillipart I said whats up! Here's a recent pic of the "old dudes brigade". Hope to hear more from you. By the way I have also got back in touch with Jim Tomitagawa from Safari Cycles. I'll be sure to tell him you dropped by the site.

Jeremy

Wow, Buddy is here. Give us an update on you now, and Barry and Bo too. A few years ago I talked to your Dad and he said all 3 of you were in the mainland, he's real proud of you guys and loves to talk the old days of BMX. There are a few pics of you guys here, I'll look for more so keep checking in. So far we got Cuna, Rockne, and Rory too. If we can find Sano and Moki to get online that would be all the Hawaii BMX #1's .

Hey guys, I'm an east coast old schooler and I'm out here in Honolulu until May 5th. Anyone want to meet up? I'm staying at 909 Kapiolani, wherever that puts me. lol

I've been living here in the Bay Area since '94 or so. Barry has been living in Salt Lake City, Utah, since college. He went there for school with his high school girlfriend and ended up staying after graduation. Bo has been living all over the place - SF, Los Angeles, Seattle, Australia, India. But he's been back there for 6 or 7 years.

None of us ride anymore. i think I'm just too old. I get hurt easily, so I gotta be careful. Went water skiing in 2000, injured my shoulder and it took 5 years to recover. But I do have a mountain bike, although I rarely ride it. I live in some hills. Riding downhill is fine. But when it's time to come home, i almost have heart attacks.

Bo, in case you all didn't know, went on to skateboard fame. He got out of it years ago, when he was in his 20s. But earlier this year, I guess he was skating with some friends. He fell and fractured his skull. He almost died. Was in ICU for a week. He's ok now, but undergoing therapy.

It's amazing seeing all these pics, and hearing all these names. Jason, i don't know how you remember all this. I barely remember Scott Iha. I certainly don't remember doing a race off with him.

I must have stopped racing when I turned 17 or 18. When I was in the 15x class, I was in a very narrow, tight groove. I could execute the way I wanted. But that mental groove can be fragile. I quickly lost it. That year that I raced with the No. 3 plate, I was winning all my races and was on my way to going after that No. 1 plate, points-wise. I think Rockne and were close on points. then 2/3 way through the race year, I started losing my shoes and crashing. I fell out of the groove and ended up with No. 13. Within a year, it was over for me.

But it sounds like racing went on for years. And you guys still ride on tracks? Good for you. I think my dad donated my bike to the Salvation Army a long time ago.

About 10 years ago, I ran into Andy Lee. He was living in the Bay Area, working for Cisco (or one of those tech companies). Lost touch with him.

Good to hear from everyone.

Yeah Jeremy, I thought we were gonners at Ft Derussey. That MP was huge.

B.

Philippart - we're waiting for you go join this thread.

Hope all goes well for Bo. I seen the Christian Hosoi video and he mentioned Bo in the video. I also seen Bo's board at Hawaiian Island Creations. I worked there for a short time during college. I can remember him riding with us when he was 9yrs old. Seems like a lifetime ago.

Phillipart...been on the site yet? As for Rockne he lurks on here alot but hasn't posted yet. All is well with him. Just talked to him today. He's looking into having his goose rechromed. We are supposed to ride this Sunday with Rolland at the Hawaii Kai track. We just mostly play around and talk smack. I guess kinda like when we were kids. He's living in Kaimuki again and I live in Mililani.

Hope your dad is well.

As for racing theres nothing here right now. Jason is working on getting a track at Sand Island. The Hawaii Kai track is actually for mountain biking but they let us ride there too. If Jason gets the track going I plan to start racing just for kicks. But, I know what you mean by injuries taking forever to heal up. Not to mention hurting the next morning from riding. I guess its Ben Gay and Ibuprofen the next day. But, hey its actually fun riding on a 20" remembering all the things we used to do. This site is awesome too having everyone pop up. I hope Phillipart shows up. Lst time I saw him Rockne and I were at Pick Cadillac in Waikiki. Eric was the bouncer. He was huge! I know he went on a pretty good run in the mainland racing the pro's. I followed him for a while in BMXAction.

Glad we left an indelible memory with you at Ft Derussy. We got into all kinds of trouble during that phaze in our lives. Crazy times.

Glad to see that you posted agian on the site and look forward to seeing more posts by you. I remember when you were on a tear in 15x man. I remember one race when you crashed in 15x on the second turn and were in last. You pciked your bike up and chased everyone down and passed everyone and took 1st. Amazing stuff! I am pretty sure I have more pics of you from Rockne. I gotta check to see which ones I haven't posted yet.

Later,

jk

Eric? Where's Eric? worried_anim.gif

yeah, shirts and knee braces.

philippart keeps in shape. he was racing mountain bikes in az. he also got into motorbikes. last year he got himself a bmw 1200 cc bike. a little too much power. he crashed within a month of getting the bike. he switched to a smaller bike.

you and rock look good. i'm developing a gut.

i gotta check out the bmxhawaii site.

I guess I remember alot because my goal was to get where you guys were. I was a last place novice and you guys were the experts with sponsors and matching uniforms, low numbers on your plate. That's why I stayed with it for so long. Because it took me sooo long to win a novice race, then to turn X, then trying to win one. After all those years I had to stick around to enjoy what I worked for so long. The local level was my world so you guys were like Stu, Harry and John George. Gotta get Philapart on here. I remember going to AZ for a race and he was just starting to make his come back. He didn't know I was there so all during practice I would yell "A haole hurry up" and make him look around to see who was yelling. But in uniform everybody looks the same and people are everywhere so it took him a while to find me.
