Good question I got a 41/17 seems to have good top end speed.
[/quote
can you snap out of the gate. i was thinking 39 or 40 with a 17.
TheNige

I'm running 40/16. I don't spin and any lower than this I felt I was topping out too fast
Jason Chang
I use either 41/18 or 39/17. Tried a 42/18 and was too hard, tried 38/17 and that was too easy, so now aiming in the middle. I only had a 42 and a 38 so not much choice. But I just got a 41 to try. If you compare 39/17 on cruiser is like a 44/16 on a 20.
And you can go up one tooth if you are in clips.

Changstar

Oh, and I am on 180mm cranks

thanks for the info. i also use 180 cranks. i'll give that 39/17 a try.

Rydah, I worked out a deal with that kid with the bars. I'm almost done!!
Jason Chang
Depends what you mean by topping out to fast. Where is the point that you reach max RPM? For me I would like to be almost spun out just before the first jump. Between the first and second jump I like to hit max RPM. I am more of a spinner so things could be different with each of you. Remember it is very hard to win from behind and if people are in your way you may not get to your max speed due to not having room to open up. The larger the class the less room to get the pedals in. On a full gate I may drop a tooth just to be out of the traffic, then play hog chees zig zag ha ha ha. Plus if you are just reaching your max speed before the first turn, you lose it in the turn and have to start over again.

changstar

I think I'll stick with the 41/17. At least I have an excuse for getting beat to the first jump now biggrin.gif

I have a ton of stuff for sale on bmxhawaii

Wow I got to be a racer for the first time in a long time. To be exact about 7 years. I always would do a lap here and there and maybe race, but I can't even remember when. It was so much fun, gotta thank the boys in my class, I was iffy on racing and it felt good that they wanted me on the gate with them. Thats what pushed me over. Boy was it tough but still fun. I missed that. Need lot of work to at least get down the last straight strong. My mind told me things that my body said NO. I got a good 5 months till states, I will try to make a bigger gas tank for myself. Thanks again to everyone, the racer in me loved it.

I'm glad we were able to give you a little "nudge" to race again. That was truly my favorite time at the track so far - being in staging and on the gate with you and BU.......? Dang! Just like "small kid" times! I know it sparked the "racer" in you and you will be firing all cylinders really soon!

jk
TheNige
Yeah, great that you came out to race Changstar! Now BU can claim that he beat an ex pro...and two if he count's the time he beat TG.

JK, I don't know how you guys can run two classes - I have to get my legs in better shape. I burned myself out in the 2nd 20" heat and almost qualified but had nothing left in the 3rd and had to just roll around. Was a great atmosphere to race in though..can't wait till we have 100 riders.

I keep hoping it will get easier. Plus Alaska and Jim Drake gave me a hard time 2 weeks ago when I raced only Cruiser. Sometimes you can't even walk (like what happened to you biggrin.gif ) between motos and you have to do it all over again........Chhheeeeehooooo?
TheNige
Changstar, do you know anything about Risen forks? http://risenbmx.com/

I saw somewhere that the company is owned by Greg Hill and was wondering if can get any discount on these...want to check a pair of white ones out for my cruiser.
Jason Chang
As far as the fork itself I just know what I have seen on their website. They are now available so any shop can get them and maybe the shop will do a little discount. I am trying to get one too. In my case the demand is so high that I rather they make some money while it's hot and they can give me one later. For sure check around the local shops and the online stores for the best price. Let me know and maybe I can do ya something good. I can try at least. Plus when I crashed the other week I broke my Bombshell carbon fork.

for sure that was the best race, I hope more of the old school guys come out. they dont know what they are missing. Jim Drake actually got me to start doing some training, that guy is pretty fast. now gotta train harder to get to your level... LOL

nige,
I'm jus havin fun and trying to survive... I'm sure when those guys start training I'll have to watch my back... 2 classes, I gotta give those guys props, thats ironman stuff... good2.gif

It did motivate me to ride more. It was fun, but I am sure it would be more fun if I did not have to rest as much. So for training it is not to get faster, just to have more endurance. The GO FAST training will be after I can do a whole lap. I think BU was saving it for the main, cause he sure seemed a lot faster than in the motos. Or I was a lot slower. Just think how having one more new guy on the gate made it better, lets get another 2-3 old schoolers and it would rule. FULL GATE BABY.

Still working on it. Stuff should start to pull together this weekend and hopefully we'll have finished copies by next weekend. Jimmy T will post it when they're available.

big d says he'll bring out his new(old) mongoose tri-moly to race in a pre-90's vintage class. one pedal starts, bw leathers, premier helmets, vans shoes. anyone bet that he'll skid a crank with that 10" BB?

cooly, thanks.

Just sent over a e mail from redline giving permission to use the Redline and Redline Cup logo on video. By the way they are keeping an eye out to maybe pick up a rider to be in the Redline colors. Time to dust off the old resume and you could be the Hawaii Redline rider.

Vintage bike race would be fun. But how many people still have a pre 90's bikes that is raceable? The 2 pedal start go's back to about 78 so I would think we could let that go, but then if everybody did a one foot start it would add to the fun.

No, I said I'd bring out the '89 Robinson or the '88 S&M. Maybe we can do an Open Vintage pre-1990 race. I do have an old Profile Champ cruiser ya know. Rydah has been looking for a pre-90 bike recently and Nos is down too. This could be the first full gate over 6yrs old.
Jeremy K.
I'm in if there's a vintage class. But, does it have to be all vintage? Maybe a few concessions like tires and grips? One foot starts would be awesome. I think the two guys riding the vintage bikes every practice would kill it. The rest of us would squirrel out on the first jump - I would anyway.

I would have to concede items like grips, tires, brake cables wouldn't be made a factor. On my old bikes, even the rims are newer but pretty much everything else is vintage. I'd say the primary "rules" on this would be frame, fork, bars and stem have to be pre-1990. There's less chance of damaging a frame than there is a vintage set of tires.
Jason Chang
I'm down, got everything just apart. Gotta scrounge up all of it and build it. Most of it from 1985-89. Won't be pretty, but should ride OK. Well in my mind it rides well. If I can get a sponsorship from Mikala I could make it look totaly sano. Tires should be easy, just put on Comp III. We should have a vintage day, with races and bikes on display, people could bring out old pics, jersey's. Just anything old to talk story about.

Update SAT 20 MAR 2010 2235 HRS
Sorry, lost most of today due to local power outage. Hope to have the Finals sent to Jim Drake to post on the IBMX website later in the week. Disks for sale (Qualifying & Finals) probably avail the first SUN in APR at the track.

Yup BMX racing is on every Weds about that time. Wish I had DVR. How cool is that it is on every week. Boy if we had that back when we were kids. Heck I got excited to see a BMX bike in the backround of a show.
