Changstar tell us about your stint on the mainland. I'm thinking that we gotta make a Hawaiian invasion in the next few years.

Wow OK, well the first reality check was 1982 Jag worlds In Las Vegas. Big group went, of the older guys it was Sano, Klaus, Keith Horikawa and about another 5 or so little guys. Of the little guys Shane Sakuoka won 7 novice and the 7 foot trophy. We got smoked, and we could all win here at home. Up there we were motofill. This is the first time any of us saw someone manual some doubles, we came home and practiced it but Cambells had no doubles. Fast forward to 1984, after graduation I took all the money I had from graduation and did 3 weeks in California. Just locals but much of it at the world famous Orange Y. Lots of national main makers and winners were locals at Orange. Did about 20 races at 6 different tracks and won 6 or so of them. Made the mains at just about all of them. I was fast and had a good gate, but no skill. Lots of holeshots and lots of just waiting to get passed. Sometimes I held on, thats how I won. At the time I rode for co factory Kuwahara through Mccully's. So while up there I hooked up with Clint Miller the pro for Kuwahara and met at pipeline skatepark, which had a race track in the back. He helped a lot and said I had potential cause I was fast and could learn the skill part. Hard to teach being fast. Also there that night was Bob Hadley a former pro racer and agent for unsponsored up and commers. He watched me and talked to Clint, he offered to be my rep. About a month after getting home I got a call from Bob, he said to give a call to Mongoose. On good faith and Bobs recomendation I was signed to be on Blue Max, the Military version of Mongoose and like the B team to the factory Goose guys. This was it ,full factory, I got 2 bikes and a uniform. 1986 Hawaii got a ABA national, I did well, my best was 2nd to the mainland guys. Moki and Sano were also goin fast. Moki won open one day. many of the mainland guys said it was time to pack it up and do nationals as the next step for me. One month later they flew me in to race ABA Stockton CA, and NBL Ohio. Mike Miranda had me stay with him and do some riding. Well I got smoked, and many were the same guys I just beat at the Hawaii nats. This time Eric Rupe had me train with him. From nothing in Stockton to missing the mains by one spot in Ohio was a big improvement. From then on I seemed to be mr. 5th place in the semis. Then I jumped on a cruiser, for some reason I was faster on a cruiser. Mostly racing the same guys as on 20 but on cruiser I was making mains and 20 I was always getting 5th in a semi. I would fly up for 6-8 nats a year from 1986-1990. Finaly things came around on 20. I started making mains. Bummer I never did win one. I got everything from 2nd to 8th in mains, 1988 I was moved to the Goose squad, everything was the same just a different uniform. 1990 dirt jumping was getting big, so to make room for a jumper/racer I was let go from Goose. They brought in Tim Fuzzy Hall. I got on a few more teams after that, like Zeronine, Supercross, Hyper, Cyclecraft, Answer, Redline, Nirve.
Some trivia,
I never had a Mongoose till I rode for them, same with Redline.
Bob Haro had a brother that took care of the sponsored guys and he would make us a new number plate at every race, he even put on your numbers and sponsor stickers.
Went water skiing on Mike Kings boat with Eddy.
Have been to about 15 states racing
Was part of team USA for a race in Canada.
Broke my back in 1994
Had one of my best years in 1994, winning the national Gold cup race in Kansas, Indianapolis, and Hawaii.
1994 Got 5th at world championships. after winning my first moto and my semi, should have got a top 3. Choked on the gate.
Broke 2 sets of Redline cranks comming off the gate.
Never broke a frame.
Bent a lot of forks.
Had a home made starting gate at home with lights and all, did over a 100 practice starts on any given weekend along with Klaus, Sugi, Spanky, Sano and the Mililani gang.
Got full page pics in BMX Action and BMX Plus
Never lost that feeling of awe at the nationals, like I was a 12 novice.
Hope my body has a few more good races in it and I hope to have it at a mainland race.
Thats about it,
