As far as working on the Sandbox, we need a definite plan/schedule for working on the track. Where's the head guys on this project? People want to help but no leadership or communication is being offered, what can we do? scratch_one-s_head.gif

Rust,

I can understand your frustration. But, we have to look at what we have now. The Sandbox laid the foundation for the track and Jim and Jason fronted the money to have Billy Allen come and build the track. On the beachfront no less!!! A few months back we had nothing. I am sure things will get done soon. But, in the meantime we can all help out with grooming the track. If you guys have free time come down and rake rocks off the track and put them in little piles to the side. That alone will help move things forward immensely. Jason and Jim will be the Track Operators but we are all in it together.

Wow! That track is insane. Don't think I would have the stones for those gaps! Did you see the Elite Semi's?....... Conner Fields......man 16yrs old and killing it!!!! Too bad Mikey Day clipped the gate on the start in the main.

Hey guys talked to Jim Drake today. My guy will be bringing the riding roller around eight. Sorry I will be racing the fluidride championship in Oregon. Oh yeah we will have it from sat until monday morning. Good luck.
Jeremy K.
Thank you Ari!

So is this weekend scheduled for volunteers to help work on the track then?

jk
Jason Chang
Yeah sounds like a plan. Also probably try to do some bike packing. So bring helmets. Hey JK, do you still have a lifted 4X4? Would help to get the berm shape down.

Changstar
Jeremy K.
I don't have it anymore - I gave it to my father. I'll try and borrow it - but no promises.

Aloha Boys,

Just got back from Chula Vista...WOW. The UCi Supercross was amazing! I had the task of dropping gates the whole weekend for the Elites on the Olympic track...very cool.

The ABA am track was very cool too. Since I helped to build it a few months back, Danny and his crew killed it. They have applied Envirotec to it and it was smooth as butter, no dust either! You guys should look into that once the track is packed in!

No not yet Jeremy. The beach is beckoning every day at the moment.

To everyone else here, I'm staying in Honolulu for about six more weeks and happy to lend a hand at the track if people are heading out there to work. Only problem is I don't have transport so if anyone is coming through Waikiki or it's not much of a detour, just shoot me a PM.

Anyone else keen for a ride sometime also contact me. My hours are totally flexible and I will probably get a hire car for a few days at a time so I can coordinate to drive if necessary.

IOLANI PALACE RACE early 80's. I'm not sure who the riders are. No 199 may be Miki Fernandez.

No. 275 Eric Shishido. He told me, and spent some time looking for this pic here. Whew!

I ran into him not too long ago at Shirokiya. I was taking my son to see these guys.

For weekends work day, both Jim and I will bethere afternoon. I say from 12:00 or so on. I will be about 2:00pm, gotta work that day. Any volunteers for the morning? Roller will be there. Need someone to head up the morning. Both days.

Changstar
Jeremy K.
I'll be there Sat morning. I get off of work at 8am. Sunday I work. Let me know the details on the roller. If 820ish is cool with the guy dropping it off I can recieve it and get started.

jk
Jason Chang
Thanks JK, that would be awesome. I was out there today. Worked on the backside of triple through first turn and to lip of next jump. Turn is packed, ugly and bumpy but big work is done, now to smooth it out. Rhythm is for the most part good, just water and roll it. Water is best when soaked in deep. This is so the wet part does not peel off the dry underneth. When top surface is dry enough to walk on it without it sticking to your shoe then it is ready to pack/roll. Otherwise it will stick to roller and make a mess. At worst we could sweep it smooth and water it then let loose bikes to pack. So having the quad and roller just makes it that much better. Whole track needs fine tuning, but major dirt moving is done. We will have to drag first turn to even it out and give us some dirt to work with. Right now it is packed hard but I have no loose dirt to work with and smooth it. Give me a call in the morning and I can tell you the easiest way to get it done. I will be at work so I will call back as soon as I can. Lock combos is available from Jim if you don't have new ones

Changstar
Jason Chang
Everyone, see JK in the morning for what's going on with work day. I'll be there soon after work.

Changstar
Jeremy K.
Jason,

I need your cell number. I lost most of my contacts when my phone got wet. I'll have my cell with me today.

One day and 2 rollers going at the same time made a world of difference. Going to be even better after one more day. Tomorrow will do wonders.

BU
Jeremy K.
Forgot to thank Ari for loaning us his roller. Carla hit the rythm section with the roller and it made a huge difference. Some water and hit it again with Ari's roller and the rythm section will be pretty dialled. Jason also hit the first berm with the quad and screen for a while. Damn, I wish i could be there today. The track is so close. If anyone has a 4 x4 we can pack the berms too.

Changstar,

"After the Opening Day, normal Operating Days and Times will be Sundays and Wednesdays from 3 PM to 6 PM"

Got this from islandbmx.org site. Are there going to be plans to operate on more days and different times? I am guessing Sunday and Wed are the days you or Jim Drake have spare time.

jk
Jason Chang
Those are the days just to get started. As we get get more staff we can do more days. Wanna take one? Another rider from the past gave me a call. Dennis Navin, the wheelie king and old Hickam regular wants to ride again. I tell ya the old man cruiser is going to blow up. You guys in your 30's are still young bucks to me.

Thank you to all who helped out at the track yesterday. Sorry I couldn't make it. The first straight is butter. AWESOME!!! I almost felt bad riding it this morning..........almost. I bet guys will show up wanting to help out now that he harder work is done and the track is getting rideable. Oooooops did I just say that out loud? wink.gif

Actually Jim is on vacation and will be at the track everyday till Thurs. He has a Soccer game in the morning of Oct 1, but will be at the track ASAP, well before the 3:00pm opening. Mostly to water and then everybody loose. I am trying to nail down details of that day. For sure we will be riding, so bring helmet and long pants or shorts with knee pads. Not sure on the $5 fee yet and if we are needing memberships or signed waivers. Sorry so last minute, but most of my time was working on the track than membership stuff. Not expecting a big turn out, due to many loose ends and short time to announce them. But hey even if it is not perfect, it is still miles ahead of the old Campbells days. Which for many is the last time they rode a BMX track. Getting it perfect is an ongoing thing and the track will improve constantly, even after we get racing. Those that may have done getting their ABA membership is good to go.

Jason,

Best of luck this week as you guys open the track. Wish we were could be there to be a part of all the festivities and get to ride on that bad boy. I was looking through all the pics on the islandbmx.org site and it brought back a lot of cool island BMX memories. Especially the ones of Andy and Ryan standing on the dirt mound that would be molded into a track and bringing BMX racing back to the islands after a 4-5 year absence. Take care and ride hard brah!!!

Please pass along my congrats to Jim too.

We will be able to hang with them someday soon. Hawaii guys have always proven that. But, like I told you and Moki the other day. I can't even make a complete lap yet without my legs on fire and my lungs exploding. blush.gif I am not worried about clipping in and stuff. I am worried about being able to stand after one lap.

jk

I am looking for a volunteer to help with sign ups, if needed. I don't want a long line of unhappy people as they watch others riding around. As soon as I know the details of membership requirements I will pass them on. Bad side is the Sandbox guys will meet on Wed, and that leaves little time to get word out. Unless you already have membership then you are good to go.

Changstar
Jeremy K.
Is there anyway to apply for ABA membership online? I can only find the form itself online.

jk
Jason Chang
Oh, not sure. I'll check it out and see what I can find out. Soory couldn't make it to track today.

Changstar

Please pass info around.

Your Bike:

Make sure all bolts are tight - especially your axle and stem bolts.
Remove any freestyle type axle pegs.
All reflectors/brackets must be removed for safety purposes.
If your bike has a kickstand, it must be taken off.
You will eventually need a numberplate. You will be provided a temporary numberplate with your membership purchase.
Clothing and safety equipment:

Long sleeve shirt.
Long pants or jeans.
A helmet. The ABA recommends a full-face helmet.
Any enclosed shoe is sufficient. Skateboard style shoes are suggested.

Changstar
Jason Chang
This Thursday is the first day you can ride the new track. All ABA rules for bike and safety equipment is in effect. ABA membership is required. But you will have options.

Free one day membership, good for only one day and one time by a rider.

Temporary (trial) membership: There is a $25 fee for this 30-day membership. This
membership is valid at ANY ABA track however, riders may only compete in single points
events and receive no ABA points for their finishes. This membership is used solely to
introduce the brand new rider to the sport. A rider may only purchase one (1) of these
memberships in his/her BMX career. This membership can be converted to full membership
status with a second payment of $25, if done so within the 30 day life of the temporary
membership.

Full (annual) membership: There is a $45 fee for this one (1) year membership, which is valid
at any ABA sanctioned track in the U.S. or Canada. Upon becoming a full (annual) ABA
member, each rider receives an ABA rulebook, an official ABA number plate, an assigned
number with corresponding numbers to be placed on the plate, an official membership card with
bar coding and the ability to earn points towards yearend awards. The riders also receive a
yearly subscription to the all ABA BMX magazine—the BMXer.

TRACK OPENS TODAY AT 3PM! sun_bespectacled.gif sun_bespectacled.gif sun_bespectacled.gif

Thank you to all those who have made this happen!

Reid Shimabukuro, Wayne Rhoden, Grace Pacific, Jason Chang, Jim Drake and all those who volunteered to help with grooming the track.

Yesterday was awesome! The track was smoother than we all expected. Once we get the berms packed in good the track will be killer. I realized yesterday that the guys with the most power or speed wont necessarily be the winners. There is a huge amount of tech involved with todays tracks. I had fun riding the track but I think the best part was seeing old friends that I haven't seen since forever. Seeing Faye, Arnie, Walter "worm" Watanabe, Miki and Moki after all these years was definatey a highlight for me. Now that we have the track we need to work on the old school reuinion/BBQ/Pot Luck.

Pic (L to R) Arnie, Faye and JK. Arnie lives in LA now and just flew in before checking out the track. Pic by JT.

Yeah, yesterday was really fun to see all lot of old timers and the new kids practicing. I didn't have all my safety gear yesterday so I couldn't ride, but I still enjoyed watching everyone.
Got psyched so I hurried and built my rims this morning, not riding tuffs on the track, came out nice.

I'll be there sunday, after all the hours grooming the track, I need to ride this track. sun_bespectacled.gif

p.s. I think JK had the most fun out of everyone there.
