I know many of you have put some time in working on the track only to be told you cannot ride after. Well I trust many of you and feel confident you will take care of what ever needs the track has. So I am puting together a list of people that will have access to the track and be able to ride. The Sand box people do not know the difference between good trust worthy people and some kids who just show up. So with this list you will be in charge during the time you are there. Which means deciding what needs to be done and who else can ride. We are at a point that we will have to NOT let some people ride, like a 12 year old kid who rode there on a broken down bike with no brakes. The least we can do is let you ride after all the hard work you put in. So like I said I trust you guys to make decisions on what is best for the track. Please don't let any barneys out there even if it would be entertaining to see them wreck themselves. I hope to have enough people on the list to just about cover any day of the week. So let me know if you want to be on the list or if you know someone that should be.

A word from Jim.

All BMXers,

I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for all the hard work everyone put in to make the track building a success. We still have a way to go, but tentative opening is Oct 09 with fencing, a starting gate, and track grooming a continuing endeavor. Please feel free to stop by at times and do a little raking and take rocks off the track. Unofficially, individuals have been riding the track. Riding the track is actually one of the best ways to make the surface better for racing. Some of the news stories got the message a little wrong. The first track to open up will be Sandbox BMX. Please Kokua to discourage motorcycles on the track until we can get fencing in to prevent it. Nothing will destroy the work completed quicker than that! See pictures and a couple stories at IslandBMX.org

to island bmx,

i think i speak for everyone who is exited to see a formal place for bicycle riders to ride, but it has been a little confusing on what is going to happen next. there is no doubt that every bmx'er and mtb'er would like to see a fun and safe place to ride and would be willing to help maintain the track, but there has to be some kind of reward, in which most cases would be to ride or have their kids ride. it would be wise to take advantage of that excitement of the "new" track and get this thing off the ground.

Check these bars I picked up.

4 piece "old school style", 32" wide, 4" rise, 10 degree back sweep. They were made wide so you can cut them to your desired width.

Wow great 146 page thread!
Anyone know if there was ever a track on Maui?
Would love to get a track started on Maui.
Rust808
Welcome to the tread, mauigeek.
Don't know about a track on Maui, maybe BITD, but I recall a skatepark near the archery range at the bottom of Wailuku/ where there used to be giant piles of seaweed.

I think there was a track over by the MACC a while back. It's been gone for many, many years. There are a couple of skateparks around the island including Kihei, Wailuku and Lahaina. Kihei seems to be the only one remotely bike friendly. When I was still there, we were working with local landowners, businesses and government officials as well as the NBL trying to make a BMX track happen. Unfortunately, I moved back to Oahu and I'm not sure what happened to Matt?. I think that was his name. He was the main guy pushing for it. We planted the seeds years ago so I'm sure that somebody with the right outlook could get something started.
Jason Chang
Track will be available to ride soon. I am working on a way for you guys to have free access to the track. There is a new track being built on either Maui or Kauai can't remember which. If you guys met Carl when Billy was here building ours Carl was helping drive the heavy equipment with Billy. well Carl is going over to one of the islands to build a Motocross track and a BMX track. I think he said it was very soon. So we should have 2 BMX tracks racing by the end of this year. If you can find out which island is doing a new motocross track then that is the one also getting a new BMX track.

My wife and I along with our two children raked the second straight from berm to berm. I think we have got to top coat this track with some compactable dirt. I've got the word out to some truckers that we are looking for premium dirt. As much as I would like to race with my kids, I think of falling on that rocky dry dirt. I guess I just concerned about the safety of it?
Jeremy K.
The McLarens,

Thank you for taking the time to volunteer and help out with grooming the track. I agree that the rocks are a huge issue. Not only do we have to clear the rocks on the track itself but I feel we have to take all the rocks off the immediate area as well. We all know there will be crashes. It would give riders and parents better peace of mind knowing the area lining the track is rock free as well.

I will be there today from about 0930 till about 1300ish. We really need some sort of method of setting days where we can all come out and work on the track. We are loosing volunteers and enthusiasm on this thing. I understand the frustration of those volunteering or those wanting to volunteer. Some form of guidance from IBMX is needed!

Spent the entire day grooming the BMX track with Reid Shimabukuro from the SANDBOX. THANK YOU REID!!! We got lucky and got some help today from Gavin, Paul and Kathy....I hope I got your names correct. Thanks for helping with the track!

The time and energy that the SANDBOX guys put into this project is just amazing! It blows me away that they put all this effort in on the BMX side and aren't BMXers. HINT HINT HINT

Taking out rocks will be an ongoing task for a while, maybe many months. After a while though you will be left with good clean dirt. I hope to add a surface layer of clean dirt as we can get it, so it will probably be done in sections. I am glad you got to hang out with Reid, he is new to BMX so the more people he talks with the more he will understand it. We are very close to being able to ride the whole track. We have bought a ATV to pack the track, so I hope it does not take to long to get here from the mainland. This is needed to do the turns. Last is somehow being able to water the track in a controlled way. Trying to get the water exactly where you want it with the water truck is very hard. After that the track will be ridable. Then the starting gate is all that we need to get racing. We are pricing material right now and have a welder lined up to put it together. Thanks to Sheetmetal Hawaii. Track will not be perfect at first but over time will get better and better. We are covered by the ABA insurance now so maybe we can clear off the pillars from the track. Kids riding the track will not be a problem. The bigger issue is if a 4x4 truck or a motorcycle were to damage the track. At least we don't have to worry about being sued by someone getting hurt there. Our liability coverage is 24/7. Trying to get a few solid dates for a work day. I do thank the many of you that are going there on your spare time to do some grooming. By the way posters and flyers are in so if you need some let me know.

Changstar
Jeremy K.
Taking the pillars off the track would be great. The amount of volunteers seemed to fall off when the pillars went up. I think some kind of general guidelines should be extablished with riding the track. Like mandatory helmet if you are riding the track. And, if someone is working on the track - no riding - especially if heavy equipment is being used.

jk
AriMclaren
Yeah! definately helmets minumum or just ABA regulations. I want to ride as much as anyone but I really don't think it's quite ready yet. I got some people looking into pressurizint the ocean water. It will take a holding tank and a couple of pumps. Anyone got any Ideas? I think plastic swim pools and sump pumps sound good.
kaneohe808
Jason,

Talk to Wayne Rhoden about the water system. He had a track at Cambells and he had set up a water sytem there. He used these large plastic containers and hooked up lines to water the track there. It worked pretty good. If you are going to pump water from the ocean to water the track. You have to take in consideration the salt water will rust the bikes. Any way talk to Wayne he is there just about every day.

My next day off is this Fri so that's when I will be out there next. Let me know if anyone can make it. Can be morning or after noon. Trying to get the pillars taken out and maybe put around the edge of track to hopefully keep out trucks and jeeps. Not much we can do if a motorcycle sneeks in. People are usually there so I think we could catch them before any damage is done. Please remember that if they get moved we are not really riding. We are checking track surface for imperfections, wink wink. So officialy no one is riding. Kinda like there is no racing at those MTB get togethers.

From Reid...

All,

I would like to coordinate a workday for the BMX Track this Saturday and Sunday. Jim was out on site yesterday picking rocks and Jeremy and I were there all day Sunday pulling rocks. The track needs to be rolled and packed. Does anyone have access to a 4ft roller? I’m calling my landscaping friend to see if they have one. Landscapers use this to pack the soil before planting grass. A motorized one would be even better. Let me know if we can schedule this workday!

Aloha all volunteers! Please let me know if anyone has or has access to a roller. Also if anyone would like to participate in this weekends workday!

Mahalo!!

Track looks very good today. A little can be done by hand but we are at a point where the next step is water and packing with a cart or ATV. Which we have on the way but not by this weekend. Some shaping and rock removal is about it. Once we water and pack them we go back and adjust the shape a little more, like take down high spots and fill low. Then one more water and pack then the rest is done by riding on it. We are so close. The pilars are now removed. I work all weekend so I will try to get out there when I can. Like I said, all that is needed is some leveling to get as even a surface as we can and rock removal, unless someone gets a quad out there then we can take the next big step. Thaks to all of you, it looks great.

Changstar
Jeremy K.
JC,

Thanks for going out and working on the track yesterday! Sorry I couldn't make it. I'll try and put some time in this weekend. This weekend is a bit rough with family obligations - but since the pillars are out maybe I can let my son ride while I work on the track. smile.gif

Hey Duane,

Thanks so much for the tube steaks and sodas. That really hit the spot at the end of the day. Thanks to Jeremy for spending the whole day there pulling a lot of rocks out. Duane, Dean & his son, and everyone who helped out got a lot of work done today. Watering the 3rd straight should pack it real good.

kt,

You the man! The track has been getting watered. Someone watered and packed the first straight and berm. Maybe IBMX got the quad in? As for grooming the track? The locks on the container were changed??? We need to sort that out first.

Been wanting to sign up too to get it out of the way. Do we just sign up on the ABA website?

As far as working on the Sandbox, we need a definite plan/schedule for working on the track. Where's the head guys on this project? People want to help but no leadership or communication is being offered, what can we do? scratch_one-s_head.gif
Jason Chang
Yes you can join ABA at anytime on their website. But hate for you to pay for 12 months of membership but only get 11 due to track not being ready. But you do get the magazine. A work schedule is in the works. The man at the top is the final word, so if we can get our leash let loose we can run with this project.

Changstar
Rust808
Bone, check it out. Cleaned up real nice. Wish I took before pics, this is sweet.
This thing looked like it was ready for the dump, rust everywhere. Headset rotted off, but had a mongoose stamped BB.
