So who's in for Bikefactory tomorrow? Somebody needs to make name tags, cause some of us have not seen each other for over 10 years, some might be 20. Like I was riding with Mike "Big Island" and it took me a while to realize that was him cause he shaved his head, I only knew him with hair. Just kidding on the name tags.

Thanx JK, first I see a girl jump some doubles that I could never do, and now this. I dont think I could jump out of the pool if it had no water in it. My self esteem is shot now. Haaaaa, very impressive. Boy I need to start working out.

Changstar
Jeremy K.
Jason,
Dude. I can't do it either. I tried. I told Kiana its because I am wearing boardshorts and she is wearing a bikini. My boardshorts create too much turbulance in the water - my excuse/theory. She told me - "by all means you can wear one of my bikini's to prove your point". laugh.gif Stuck my foot in my mouth on that one huh?

I believe that the body make up of a woman is that they float much beter than men and there fore are less afected by the drag of the water. And thus may jump higher than men in water. Thats my excuse and I am sticking to it.

OR, my manly anatomy weighs me down.

OK, to get everyone hyped up on helping out with building the track at Sand Island, I'll be hosting a showing of Joe Kid On A Stingray at the Waipio BIKEFACTORY this Saturday night, August 15th. This is also to test out my "theater" before our next event. I just confirmed that we get to do a premiere for Stompin' Stu (a documentary about Stu Thompson) on the 28th or 29th of this month. We'll try to have the grill going before 8:00pm and the movie should start at 8:30.

Shoots,
SoCal Dude

Duane,

Thanks for hosting the showing last night. A good turnout of riders and families. Looking forward to the Hawaii premier of Stu.

Jason & Wes - Thanks for being there to answer questions about the track.

Thought I would post these pictures i found on that old magazine site that is on his forum.

Been searching for other Hawaii riders. But so much magazines to look through.

Remember these photos. Found the Robinson ad in the Bmx Plus Jan 1979 Magazine. That's the one with Anthony Sewell on the cover.

The other article was in the July 1979 Bmx Action Magazine. That's the one with Harry Leary on the cover.

BC

BC,

JT was kind enough to pass the Jan 1979 BMX Plus issue on to me. Here's a scan of Rory's Robinson ad. Thanks JT!

Here's some gold that JT passed along to share with the vintage HBMX crowd. Thanks again JT!

Here's the cover - BMX Plus July 1979.

Here's the Hawaii article from BMX Plus July 1979. This was the race that Safari Cycles sponsored BITD!

Post up if you can help ID the Hawaii riders. No. 806 (Top Pic) I think is Dino Pacheco. Bottom pic No. 8X is Rockne Tang, followed by 4X Kevin Sano.

Jeremy,

Thanks for posting the pics from the magazine. I remember reading the article. #806 is Pacheco as for the other riders I am not sure. Do you still have that list of racers with the numbers on. Not sure if the same year. Maybe you can use the list to identify the riders.

Jeremy,

The lower right picture. There is Dean Young, #861 might be Tim Lee , next to him maybe Cambra from Kailua Bike Shop. Not sure who is in the front.

BC,

I think you are right - 861 is Tim Lee. Thats who I thought it was but couldn't remember his name right off. Great idea about checking the list of riders. I'll try and dig it up.

Yes I think I remember Tim being a big scary dude.

Aloha boys!

Good news, just talked to Billy Allen and he is on his way over to Hawaii as we speak. He's excited to be buiding the track over there. Remember, he builds it, and the volunteers make it smooth with PLENTY of raking, watering, raking again, filling in holes, shaving down humps, plenty more raking, watering, then dragging, then a roller. Good luck boys and have fun!

When is the national there? I need an excuse to go to Hawaii!!!
Jason Chang
You out of states people keepin an eye on us huh? I will say this about a national. B.A. has brought it up before I ever did. A few things that would help on the track building besides people labor. Quad ATV, used for packing berms. Also a a few 4X4 trucks lifted so they don't scrape the bumpers when going up and down jumps. Preferably a short wheelbase like small truck or Jeep. Above what greg said is what to expect, Greg is one of the track builders for the nationals. Hope to see a lot of you this Sat and Sun.

All BMX enthusiasts,

As promised, I said I would get out a few more details on our BMX racing track building this week. We’re looking for volunteers this weekend to help with the finishing of the track for Sandbox BMX out at Sand Island. Our track builder, Billy Allen, is arriving tomorrow from Colorado and should be complete on two full days of work on the track by this Saturday. We’re asking for volunteers to come out when you can with gloves and tools (shovels, rakes, brooms) to Sand Island starting at 7:30 AM until about 7:45 PM. I realize not everyone can make it, and not everyone has the stamina to last the entire day, but if you can make it at any time during the day, many hands make the work lighter. We’re all volunteers on this project, so anything you can add will be appreciated. The motorcycle guys have been putting in the lion’s share of the heavy equipment work up to this point. Now is our time to show our interest in this project and our ability to “generate a crowd.”

The Island BMX folks will do two shifts each day. Jason Chang will take the morning shift on Saturday, and I will take it on Sunday. Please introduce yourselves if we don’t know you. We’ll try to get as much water as possible out there for you, but since we obviously don’t know how many will show, don’t be afraid to contribute to the cause in this way as well. We’ll also try to set out some food each day around the middle of the day.

On Monday at 10:30 AM, there will be an official ground breaking with Government officials and media. Obviously we’re doing our best to get the word out about the track, and the park in General. Sand Island OHV has done an outstanding job of generating the publicity for this event. As many interested BMX folks that are available Monday would look good for the camera’s, especially since we will be the first track to open up. I expect the Grand Opening to be around October.

Directions to the Park is to take Sand Island Access Road over the bridge and take the first right at the light. You should be able to park in the parking area on the ocean side before the boat ramp. Thanks for your help and hopefully we’ll see you out there! Don’t hesitate to call or email if you have questions.

Jason Chang
Was talking with Billy and the first jump will be more than what you see. Right now it looks like a step down. It will be a step up and step down in one jump. So you are seeing only the end half. Or think of it as a long table top jump with a single roller in the middle. The first turn is waaaay bigger in person, it is huge, think of Aala skatepark. Just wait for what you will see tomorrow!!!!!!!!

Sorry no new pics. I forgot my camera on Sat. So far 3 turns are laid out. Second straight is a step, single roller, double, double, into 2nd turn. then today out of 2nd turn is going to be the rhythm section into the last turn, then some kind of jump or two on the last straight. BIG THANK YOU TO THE MANY PEOPLE WHO CAME OUT TO HELP. We got a lot done, and still have a lot more. People were still buzzed even after the full day of work. For the record, let it be known, Kevin Lau is the first to give blood to the track. A good old fashioned slip a pedal RAT Trap ate his shin. Jeremy Kam's very trick repo Jag was the first to lay knobby tracks down the first straight. Yup quite a few guys took a shot at the first straight, even being rough and not fully packed in. Then again it still was smoother and more packed that Cambels.

Hey Jason,

Give us a rough schedule as far as helping out at the track. When are you going to be there next?

jk
Rust808
JK, These are great pics! I didn't know Alex was HFD, we went to school together, he was 2 yrs. older, but I used to tag along with him and my cousin and the rest of the Central Inter. boys. I'll be at the track tomorrow after work to put some rake time in.

Jeremy K.
Russ,

Alex is Capt on HazMat. I think he is still stationed at Kapolei. What time are you going to the track tomorrow? I might go for the ground breaking - then spend some time with the family - then come back out towards the evening.

JK, I'll be there around 4:00, pau work at 3:30 at Kaneohe Marine Corp Base. I'll bring my Torker for a test run.

Today was great, I'll try to get pics up as soon as I can. Those of you going tomorrow will see. I'll say this, the second half of the track is more rad than what you saw at the end of Sat. We don't have an official work day planned out yet, but I think people could get there and do a little when they can. I can't be there tomorrow but check with Jim or Carl to see if they can open the storage for the rakes and stuff. Here is a hint of the future. ABA told Billy specificaly to build it so it can handle a national. Start training boys.
