Wow that track was awesome. The jumps were deep, much deeper than like the regular ABA nats. Looked like you had to be real good to manual those jumps. Saw lots of riders lose it on those jumps. Very supercross ish. Sand island won't be that rad, well not at first, hehehe.

I've already contacted Mark about doing a premiere for Stompin' Stu. Haven't decided if I'll do another Backdoor BBQ here at the Waipio store or if I'll do it at one my other premiere locations (Hard Rock Cafe, Hooters). Let me know if anyone has any feedback.

Wherever you have it would be great! I'm partial to the Wapio Store - mostly because I live 5 minutes away.

But, be cool to have an event at the store. Get more people familiar with the location. Create some buzz on the track. Maybe get KVibe involved too? Maybe Changstar and Jim Drake can update us on the track. JT can be the Paparazzi.
But, I am sure most of the guys will say Hooters.........I just can't because my wife reads the forum sometimes too.

At Hooters, I normally have access to the 2 big screen TV's in the back. There are definite benefits to a restaurant setting (i.e. not having someone desginated as chef). There are also benefits to the shop concept. I have a projector and a screen, a grill a cooler and some tongs. Our last BBQ was pretty fun, and the movies we showed at the old shop were a hit also. I figure the Waipio store is a central location, with plenty of free parking. And I live 5 minutes away.
I also have a bicycle rack and a long alley behind the shop . . . Did I hear someone say drag races . . . bunnyhop height poles?

Hey all, I have a golf cart to help with the packing of the new track. Buuut, it needs some work. Anyone good with small motors? It basicaly is a lawnmower type engine. I know the batery needs recharging and it only go's about half speed now. So if anyone is able to help get it runnin good let me know. It runs very poor now.
Also if anyone has a Quad that they can bring to the track, we have a screen drag that we use to smooth things out but nothing to pull it with. The golf cart is to low and gets hung up if you try to roll over jumps. But we use the cart for packing berms.

The tentative release date of "Stompin' Stu" is August 28th. I'm thinking about doing it that night with DVD's available for sale. I have another deal up my sleeve where I would do the premiere a couple nights after with some bonus features. I don't know about doing a double feature just because thats a long time to sit around and watch other people talk. I'm totally game to do a Joe Kid showing mid-August if you guys are interested however.
It'd also be a good time to test the waters with the logistics on the premiere format. BBQ, Drag Races, Bunnyhop contest, mini bike show to see where everyone is with their builds, you know, basically a good old-fashioned trash talk session. Kids are completely invited, we can even do some trike races pending availbility. I think I'm getting a little ahead of myself.

Thumperpilot,
Yeah, Eric is a cool dude. From what I remember his mom was a realtor in Hawaii BITD. I remember when I first met him at a Hawaii race he was wearing a Wes BMX jersey. He had just moved here from the mainland. He soon got sponsered by The Bike Shop here in Hawaii. He hung out alot with Buddy Ikeda another local standout. I saw him many years later where he was the bouncer at a club called Pink Cadillac. I followed his racing career for a while in the magazines. Glad to hear he is doing well he deserves it!

Not really a history. But, when we were 14 Eddy King was the man in 14X. Rockne wanted to beat the legend and had his chance at the 79 South Pacific Nat. Rockne beat EK in the 14X main but EK beat Rockne in the Open. Cool to see them both riding again. Hey, I try anything to get Rockne off his okole and ride. Teasing him dosen't seem to work anymore.

The countdown is on for the track. I did a drive by the other day looks like alot of work to do still. Does the ABA provide the gate or does someone still have the one from wheeler. I can get left over concrete from Ameron for free for the starting gate. I saw a ton of equipment over there. I would be happy to lend anything I got, Bobcat, excavator, compactor.
Jason Chang
Aug 3 2009, 10:52 PM
Hey Ari, is the compactor the big smooth drum roller? They have one at the site but it may be too big and heavy. Instead of packing the jumps it might just flatten them out. Let me know what exactly you have and I will contact the builder to see what would help. After track is built, next is fencing, and somehow someway get a starting gate. I have no idea what happend to the old Wheeler gate. The Army had it last and I don't know if it is still at the old track site or if they hauled it away. Still looking for someone to get the golf cart running. The ABA uses a battery golf cart to pack berms because it is much heavier than a gas cart. But we only have a gas cart, but it works well, and I was thinking that once we get it running good maybe we can find a way to add weight to the front. Maybe weld on a short piece of pipe to the bumper that we can put weight lifting plates on. We used to just have a few heavy people sit on the front of the cart. I'll give you a call soon.

Aug 4 2009, 06:39 PM
Or is a compactor the big jack hammer type? What exactly is a escavator? Some used fencing is on site that we can have. Just need people that know how to put it up. Not quite enough to do the whole track but it is free and a good start.

I have a sled compactor, but I think I can get a small drum roller for a few days it's a walk behind type. I think it would be perfect. I also found about five fence posts. The excavator has a digging arm and a bulldozer blade it runs on tracks.

Actually Changstar, we use (when the battery isn't dead) a 4-wheeler with golf cart tires. For packing the turns and whatever we have raked in, straightaways and all. As far as a roller, we try to rent a DD-22 or BoMag, they look small but do the trick. Billy Allen can explain more too!

I would aso look into EnviroTac or a sealer of some sort. Rockford, ALBQ and a few others use it on the track. It keep the dirt sealed and I know how hard it can be to get the red dirt just right! Too much water and turns to mud, let it dry turns to powder! Whew, I get a headache just thinking about it!

If the Golf Cart is Gas powered I can contact the guys from Quik Fix. They used to be behind our town shop and are pretty good at small motors.
Do we have a way to find out if the old gate is still on Wheeler? It would be a lot easier to move it than to either ship one in or have one made.
Next week Saturday, the 15th, I'm gonna test the waters with my "Movie Theater" at the Waipio store. Jason asked about Joe Kid and he's gonna get it. I figure show up at about 7:45 to 8:00pm, have Jim Drake and/or Jason Chang give us a little run down on the track. Maybe we can coordinate some of the schedules for helping out at the track . . . We'll have a grill, cooler, table. Please bring a dish with enough to share and post what you're thinking of bringing so we can have a nice fun, balanced meal. BYOB for 21 & Over!
Bring your bike and if people are down, we can have some games like a bunnyhop contest, Foot Down, drag races.

OK, to get everyone hyped up on helping out with building the track at Sand Island, I'll be hosting a showing of Joe Kid On A Stingray at the Waipio BIKEFACTORY this Saturday night, August 15th. This is also to test out my "theater" before our next event. I just confirmed that we get to do a premiere for Stompin' Stu (a documentary about Stu Thompson) on the 28th or 29th of this month. We'll try to have the grill going before 8:00pm and the movie should start at 8:30. I'm hoping that Jason Chang and/or Jim Drake will be there to give us a little bit of a heads up on the Sandbox. We will have coolers with ice for your beverages (BYOB 21 & Over!) If you're going to come out, and you know you should, comment back at www.shootsbrah.com and let us know what you're bringing. Bring a dish with some to spare and we can have a nice fun pot luck. If time permits, we can bring out the height poles for some bunnyhops. We might even do drag races and foot down.
I know that not all of our readers are focused on BMX Racing, but I think it's good for us all to come together and some love for the 20's . . . or 24's and 26's for you Cruisers and OM's.

One big game we did in the past was "foot down". Maybe for a future get together I can get a friend of mine to bring his gate, it is the full on Olympic gate with timers and a huge read out board so everybody can see their time.
