For the most part I post up news about the track within a day or two from when I recieve it. So you guys always get it first. There should not be anything on the track that would scare people away. For the most part, you could hit the brakes and get through a section safely. The Olympics is BMX at it's highest level with the best riders in the world. While local tracks are the begining grass roots level. With the local track being just hard enough to teach you to take on the next level.
I have to wonder that for an old school series if we may have more riders than bikes that meet the requirement. Unless you have one already, I am not sure you could find one that is safe or that needs a lot of work to get it going. I would hate to make people go out and put out big dollars for a bike to ride for a few races a year. Maybe have two classes, one for anybody over 30, and one truly vintage class with bikes and uniforms from a past era. That way everone can be a part, would be a bummer to have riders sit out cause they don't have a bike.
I look forward to taking on anyone in clips, while I am on flats. This just raises the challenge up a few notches. This also put more pressure on the clip guys, they have nothing more to do equipment wise to be faster. While all flat pedal guys can add some speed by clipping in. They are maxed out, while we still have one more option.

Just a thought, but it sure would be interesting if we had a class for coaster brakes.

Jason-- The race we had a few years back was just an open class or what evers! They called it Sketch Class! All for fun just to get us old farts to race. Even had one cruiser in it. We all rode park bikes as most of us guys are park riders now. Its all about the fun and getting out and do some racing! Hope you guys work something out! Maybe one of my trips I'll try to make it out to track and jumps! Would be cool to hang out with you all!

Sounds like a class for Rory. I remember him switching back to coaster brake at one point when he had the no.1 plate. Smooth as usual!

Changstar,

Thanks for the update on the track! Is there anyway we can Jim Drake to post updates here or BMXHawaii? I get calls from time to time from people asking about the track. People also ask me at HK track sometimes. It would be great to have somewhere that we can point them to.

OK I'll make it more obvious.....the only one that will be clipped in will be RH. wink.gif

I ran into Roger Dodger no. 63 last night. He mentioned that if the track was more like the ones we used to race on BITD he would seriously consider racing again. I think alot of the old timers are under the same impression I had when I came back - that you have to jump huge gaps during a race. Maybe the Olympic track helped promote this misconception? But, I think when the OG's realize we can roll a new school track there will be more guys coming back.

I am really interested in an old school series. Flats, side pull brakes, 1" headtube, quill style stem pre 85 or so frames. Would be so cool! Anyone else?

jk

that would be a good class... oh no, gotta build a old school bike...

I'll work on getting the hose.

Can you measure the nozzle for me? Measure the female thread side - inside diameter. We carry either 2 1/2" or 1 1/2" hose. The 2 1/2" hose nozzle inside dia is just a smidge over 3". I have a 2 1/2 "nozzle sitting here on the desk and I just measured it. So the hose you are talking about might me a 1 1/2" hose. Just want to make sure so I get the right one.

Track builder will be here Aug 20. Will measure nozzle and get back to you. Pretty sure it is the smaller one but I will double check. Will need info on parts needed to attach hose to hydrant or water truck.

Jason,

I took the liberty to post some of the track info on dhhawaii.com. Some of the guys are offering to help - see the link below. Hopefully this will get more riders racing. The MTBers have a very strong community when it comes to riding and building together. Most of the riders pool together and dig. Hopefully our bmx community can do the same. wink.gif

Thank you for spreading the word. In the 5 years that Wheelr BMX was open I still heard many times by new racers that they never knew the track was there. My goal would be for everyone to know where the BMX track is, even if you were not a BMXer. Kinda like everybody knows where Aloha stadium is, even if you have never been there and not a sports fan. Then at least there should not be people out there not racing because they did not know of the track.

BU remember Andrew Gon? Check out his Thruster from BITD...

This is what it looks like today. I asked him to "give" it to me. *LOL*

Yes it is a 1.5, it even says 1.5 on the nozzle itself. Right now it has a 4 inch long piece of pipe threaded into it, inside diameter of that pipe is 1.5 inch. Old hose was just clamped onto the piece of pipe. Boy that was a chore to drag that hose around the track when it was filled with water. Most of the time I did this by myself. I had to put nozzle down then go back about 25 feet and drag that section, then grab the nozzle and drag that part. Plus our hose was really old and had a lot of leaks, all along the hose would be big puddles.

First real work day is planned for Aug 22, Sat. My guess is that Billy will be out there by 8:00 or 9:00 am. He will start moving dirt on the 20th, so a few sections will be ready for grooming by hand on Sat. So everybody is welcomed to come out and lend a hand, bring any gardening tools you have. Mostly rakes and shovels. From that point on any day you would like to come someone should be there. The more people we get to help, the faster we will have a track ready to ride. Come any time, as I am sure those who come early will be tired in a few hours so if new people come in through the day we will always have fresh people.

Changstar
Jeremy K.
OK I'll work on getting the 1 1/2" hose. I have a bunch of extra work hours scheduled in August but if I am not working I'll be out at the track helping. Damnnnnn I can't wait! Am I the only one pshyched?

jk
Jeremy K.
Jason,

Good news! Ari McLaren from th MTB community is stepping up to the plate to offer us some much needed help. Can you touch bases with him? Here's his post on dhhawaii.com.

I talked to a couple of truckers. We can get dirt but the spot to dump has to be flexible. Cause when the dirt is loaded it has to be dumped right away. I also will volunteer my bobcat and crew when the time is right. I used to have Jason's number but no more.

Jason Chang
Hey thats the guy that called me once about starting a track in Kailua. I hope that still could happen, 2 tracks would be awesome. Then we could take turns having races every other weekend. I can tell you from experience that running a race every weekend is a lot of work. Ari, hope you can find us a few thousand cubic yards. Better to have to much dirt than not enough. We can always backstock some for future changes, or just make things a little bigger. Bigger jumps and bigger berms.
I am still working on a surprise or 2 that will make our track unique. That's what I noticed when I traveled to race, was that the tracks that stick in your memory had something on it that other tracks did not. Don't want a cookie cutter track that is boring. I want something that mainland racers will have good things to tell others about. I don't want them to just say, yeah it was just a basic track.

Changstar
Jeremy K.
Jason,

There are guys from the MTB willing to help. One basic question posted:

directions? POC? numbers to call?

Whether you like it or not you are the point man JC. The grand poobah so to speak. Looks like the MTB community has guys willing to throw down and help dig. I hope the BMXers will help out too. Not just show up at the track when its done and grumble about certain things. Right Rockne? wink.gif

Click link for map. Enter along Sand Island access RD, after you cross over big bridge make a right on small street just before road curves to the left. Go about 75 yards and make a right like you are going to canoe launch. Track area is ocean side just after you make the right turn. Click on satellite to see real pic, then zoom in to see small street to turn right on, you can also see canoe dock and launch at end of same street as track street

BU, IMHO the Thruster, to me they have more history here in Hawaii especialy since it had to travel all the way from Florida. I mean who would have thought an East coast company would be so popular here. Besides you made your mark while on one. I can remember a lot of fast guys on Thrusters, and can only think of Barry Ikeda on a DG.

Changstar,

Bradley "Kaui" Akau and Ryan Cordeiro come to mind as being pretty fast on DGs around 1 or 2 BC (Before Changstar). :-)) Actually around 1978-1979.

I haven't been around for awhile but I check in from time to time.---So the track is actually a go now.Nice! Is it going to be a ABA sanctioned track? If I remember correctly there is a trial period for new riders.IE if my son wanted to try a few races out first before joining.

I have to check our baseball schedule but if I'm available on the dig date,I can donate manpower as well.
Jason Chang
I have to check on how the deal runs but yeah there is a trail period for riders to check it out and see if they like it.

Sorry no disrespect to those before me, I didn't start to know the riders till about 1980 or so. I am sure there were plenty fast guys on DG's. It was kinda hard to miss when Bo and Kevin got on Thrusters. I very much respected those guys. Plus for me Kev was one of the first to talk and teach me things and actually knew my name. Rory also told me a lot when I started but I doubt he remembers it. We got to know each other much later. I can still remember the feelings I had to just get my first set of race pants. I was so stoked. Then I had to figure out how to be fast and not just look it.

Changstar,

Don't worry about that, we'll have posters and flyers at your disposal to get out to all the bike shops in HI. Also, dig into your school districts and find out what it takes to get a flyer into the schools. WE WILL BLOW THIS UP IN THE ISLANDS! Every kid with a bike will know about the track!

As soon as we get closer and have a footprint, I can start making inquiries and proposals on fencing. Does the ABA or the Sand Island Off Highway Vehicle Association have any reservations about permanent signs on the fencing? I'm sure the fencing companies and local businesses would be more than willing to help out if they could have advertising on the fences. I'll throw up some posts on the www.shootsbrah.com regarding volunteers for next month.

"I am really interested in an old school series. Flats, side pull brakes, 1" headtube, quill style stem pre 85 or so frames. Would be so cool! Anyone else?"

How's about pre-1990? 20 years and older should still qualify as vintage. I do like the flats/bear trap pedals, 1" Quill stem and no brake braze-on regulations, though. Oh, who am I kidding? I'm Clydesdale class.

I do have my old race bike from1986, quill stem and non canti brakes. So I am in. Looking into the advertising thing at the track, I have thought about this but in the past was told I was getting ahead of my self. But we are on the same page. I even thought about having a paved starting hill then selling the space. Can you imagine a giant 10 foot X 10 foot logo on the starting hill. Or how about the starting gate so when the gate is up you can see the logo. You know that everybody watch's the start of a race and this is the most visable part of the track.

Have you guys seen the recent race where Stu killed the cruiser class. ABA Rockford race on the 2nd day. He probably would have won day one but left early before the mains. He was one of the guest speakers at the vintage dinner. I'll try to link it if I can.

Click on cruiser, then look for 51-55 cruiser, day 2.

http://www.go211.com/u/abamidwestnationals2009

Also if you can find last years NBL grands 2008. I think he raced both 20 inch and cruiser. I know he won one of them maybe both classes.
