Found this on BMXHawaii.
Moki and Miki Fernandez will be back to Race BMX at The Sandbox BMX. Moki and Miki Fernandez will return to BMX when the Sandbox BMX track opens. Moki and Miki have been riding but not really training yet but look forward to racing again.
The Team will be riding Crupi race bikes. The team will consist of 4 riders, 2 in the 20" class and 2 in the 24" class. So all you old skoolers look out the Fernandez Brothers are back. You think you can Hang? By TG
Awesome that the boys are riding again and I look forward to being on the gate with everyone. But, TG cracks me up! You can't talk smack for someone else.

Anyone who knows Moki would know how soft spoken and humble he is. I hope they do get hooked up, as I think if Moki can just worry about riding and not about setting up his bike. He will be a FORCE. I have seen Moki adjust to many different bike set ups and always fast, just think how he would be if his bike were how he wants it, not just what was available to him. The OM class grows, and the secret riding begins? The Rock must be getting realy fast since we have not heard from him. How about a ride next wekend? Time to dust off the Formula, and I see many of you that have bikes I would love to take a spin on.

Rust,

P,
Vans has a outlet store in Waikele if you are ever in the area. Get some knee/shin pads too. They will pay for themselves on the first slipped pedal. No more ouchee!
Check these badboys out. Sure hope there's gonna be a race track or Rust and I are buying some stuff for nothing.

So how do those Vans compare to the Shimano shoes? I like both but the Shimano's seem to have a stiffer sole, so more power transfer. I need all I can get since I am probably half as strong as I used to be.

I haven't tried the Vans yet. Freaks me out jumping clipped in. Obviously a fear I'll have to overcome. If the track becomes a reality I'll force myself to get over it. I think we all lost power or spin over the years. Well except for maybe Russell H.

May 6 2009, 01:57 AM
I would wait a while to clip in. Get totaly comfortable with all aspects of riding first, like gates, jumping, speed jumping, manualing on flats. Cause all of this will be much harder to learn while worrying about your feet. That way all the basic riding is under controll and all you have to adjust to is the clips, since the rest will be learned and practiced already. I know I will be on flats for a long time more, at least till I can rid myself of most of the squirlyness. Which maybe never ha ha ha.
Changstar
Jeremy K.
May 6 2009, 10:13 AM
Changstar,
Totally agree with what you said. Well except from you being squirrely. I have been practicing manualing for about year now. I do it everyday for about an hour when I am at work. I still don't have it down. I can't imagine manualing clipped in. Jumping clipped seems like it would be easier than manualing. Man, so much to learn now. I think the only guy that will be clipped in the beginning is RH. Nothing a little tire rubbing wont fix. Just kidding Russel!

May 8 2009, 04:59 PM
I was still racing a lot when clips first started to come in. The big rivalry started and well we all know now that clips proved to be faster and became the norm. However new ways for flat pedal riders to try and even out the advantage came to be. It is all about knowing the weaknesses of clips and taking advantage of them. Many times those that are clipped in don't know the down side, for every plus there is a minus. Since most of the die hard flat riders were older, and the clipped in riders were younger, this brought in the Old age and treachery VS youth and skill. Add in a little skill to the treachery and things get very interesting. Of course if need be I will clip in. BWAHAHAHA.

Gonna try this stem today, Brickhouse. I think 26mm?

I know, blue don't match.
Jason Chang
May 9 2009, 08:58 PM
Those are awesome stems, and are perfect for those long frames. I tried to get one way back but they were hard to find. So I got a "Big Cheese stem" which is 33mm reach. Big Cheese stem and a frame that was 21.5 TT worked very well. But for some reason a 20.5 TT and a 50mm reach stem felt better even though the total reach was very close. I think it has to do with where the headtube is, since a longer frame will put the headtube out further, even though the short stem put the bars further back. Or maybe I am just too picky on how my bike feels. Both set ups felt good, but one was just more gooder.

Rust,
Knee pads will pay for themselves once you wreck or slip pedal. I have the 661's. The only complaint is that they slide down your knee as you are sliding face first during a wreck. Our dog chewed the s_it out of one of them so I'm thinking of getting new ones from THE. They have some pretty cool stuff on their site.

Wow that S&M looks killer!!! Whats up with that fat back tire? That will make your gearing one tooth harder, so you really have like a 45/16, plus the 175 cranks makes it just a little bit more hard. Compared to a traditional 44/16 with 180mm cranks and a skinny back tire. So what was your set up BITD when you were on a Thruster, or what ever you had just before you started riding for Jim? That's when you started winning the X class( you had Haro race pants), I think you were about 14. That's when me and Sano started to really watch you, cause you were getting faaast. I just remember it was a chrome frame. For pads, have you guys checked out Lizard skins? I like them because they are less bulky and feels more like you don't have pads on. For sure at least wear gloves. I'll bet all of you are better than you think, fear will make you hold back on things you actually can do already.

had thruster tri powers, vanishing point, and i don't know the name of the regular one. 175 cranks with either 42/16 or 43/16. before i could spin the crap out of that gearing, but now the legs seem to get tired alot faster. i used to have mostly CW bars. thruster forks and bottema forks. haro was the hot ticket back then. yeah, the fat tire 20X2.2 to me seems better for street riding, but for racing probably go with a smaller rear and maybe a smaller front.

I gotta thank a few guys for helping me get this bike done......Gary at Johnny Chopper for building the frame and hooking me up with a free fork. Mike Whaley's son was one of the top racers at the old Wheeler track. Justin was a top dog from about 9 years old til the track closed. He won many local titles as well as some good finish's in the mainland. He still rides today, I think he is about 14 or so on a yellow Dino Jr cruiser with skinny wheels. He does hit up HK from time to time as well as other hot spots. I even see Tyson once in a while on a MTB, he can manual awesome for being on a MTB. Tyson would come out to watch Justin and help with technique. After all these years it was awesome to see Tysom manual our rhythm section 3 or 4 jumps in a row. I am sure they both could show up to ride with us and maybe we can talk Mike into getting on a bike too.

Jason,
I retired the original frame and had this one built from scratch. Modern geometry, long top tube, 1 1/8 headset, and canti brake bosses. Johnny Chopper built the frame for me. He even hooked me up with a 1 1/8" mongoose/jag style fork built from scratch.
Here's the breakdown:
Johnny Chopper Jag Tribute frame and fork
American bottom bracket
1 1/8" headtube
canti mounts
nickle plated thanks to Pete! aka mongoosedrummer
Slam Bars
Repro Mongoose grips
Pro Neck from retro bmx
Gold Tektro brakes
Repro Jag BMX pads
Gold Wellgo MG1 Pedals
Rechromed single pinch 175 flight cranks
Old School Bubble Font 40T front sprocket
Gold Snafu seatpost
Retro BMX seat
Repro Team Jag decal set from Waza
Gold Cane Creek headset
Rims aren't done yet. Right now its running on a front Araya 7C with stainless spokes and Shimano DX hub. Front tire is a 1.95 Maxxis Holy Roller. Rear wheel is a Sun BFR with DK hub and 15T ACS Claw. Rear tire is a IRC Siren.
I have a gold anno set of JP high flange hubs. Just waiting on some hoops. Looks like Odyssey might make their gold Hazard Lites available to the public soon so I am holding out for those.
