Part of growing up in Hawaii. I think we all got beat up at one time or another.

Cool about Adrian, they also hung out with Todd Takano. May have been Todd that flipped the car. I remember Adrian used to run 45/16 and 170 cranks. Boy for a skinny dude he had some power.

Those results hopefully will grab the attention of a few more guy guys, as many people find us by doing a google search on their name and it leads them here. BITD it was Duane Kondo that helped me pick out my first race bike. keep them commin.

Oh dude, that is like COLD ... hahaha

I did my first file server Virtualization procedure last night, for those IT pros out there, ain't that the doggone BOMB, ya think??

Moving on, I had a bunch of personal stuff in my desk area since 2000 and found MORE old school BMX negatives.. including two of the great Moki Fernandez, number 52.. I am sure that is Moki and not Miki because of the style..

Just picked them up from Longs, and they rocked azz because I sorted them out, and tried to present the negs to the booth-ling in as fair shape as possible.. i mean some of these negatives were so gnarled.. and I could not make out the participants due to lack of clarity..

however, they came out pretty good and I'm scanning them as I type this -- with my clone core computer, naturally..

Hang tight Boone's Farm Rassberry wine $1.99 drinking/remembering BMX bunnies.. coming in a post near you.. quite soon, I might add

This thread is on FIRE, for sure Holmes..

Thanks to everyone for posting up the pics, those sent in from the So-Cal reunion bash is off the hook, the ramp jumps are insane in the membrane..

.. hey Changstar, howzit going??

I am heading to the Bike Factory after I post these next few pictures.. from the negatives I just had developed, thanks to Longs who finished re-creating them faster than 2 shakes of a lamb's tail..

Here we go:

Moki Fernandez doing the main dirt jump serious styling justice..

and this one..

yes, those are tight jumping shots..

Then we showcase "Mental Mark" getting RAD at the old Makiki Jump .. one hander Table!

and this is purddy darn cool ..

Danny Lee, who left to serve in the Marines, doing the thing that we commonly call "lean" or "table"..

That was some crazy stunts, pulled off at the former Hickam Air Base jump..

nextly, he gets down at Cannons Club ..

..

Enjoy those pixx.. check ya'alls later..

<response to earlier post by JK showing results..>

I kept getting errors about too many images.. sorry Admins.. if this fails, I'll come back later..

-------

Aloha JK-

Thanks for those posts.. I saw Dennis Tom and some other names, including mine.. and I can't imagine why.. didn't race that often at all..

Onward to more pix..

I had earlier posted a pic of the Patterson Racing patch I found..

and I totally lucked out by finding this pic, from the negative stack, of Tod Kawakami jumping with a PR Racing jersey.. RAD!!

..

and Reid Kawamae also has a presence in the old negatives I dug up ..

These were shot at Pearl City flats..

Check out Tod's PR jersey.. yay!

Here comes Tayne Toma, a sort of shy fellow back then.. not reknown for his dirt jumping prowess..

.. however, these are pretty cool shots..

.. the Makiki Jump was my personal all-time favorite, quite possibly.. I only may give the nod to Cannons Club since it lived and existed for a much longer period of time.. that sweet Makiki jump lasted only for a short number of weeks.. construction took its toll thereafter..

All right Chief, later on

Never remember Rock doing much jumping at the races. Seemed to focus in on just going fast. Need some pics of him away from racing getting rad. So who was the old school top jumpers? Who was the bunny hop king? Or top wheelie monster? I have to say Moki was my fav, whether it was leading a moto or getting rad or both at the same time.

Wow Rust, nice collection..!

Tried out a couple of bikes at Bike Factory.. Mitch and Carl Brooks were in and later on Clayton Chee showed up.. that was cool..

The 26 seemed to be a good fit, I was comfortable on it.. however a 24 might suit me better..

24 wheels and a 24 frame? Have not fiddled with bikes besides road since my BMX days.. so the measurements are probably way different.. I don't want or need gearings, single speed is fine and perhaps 170 cranks one-piece and platform pedals..

Hey waazup JK-

For me, a great OG dirt jumper could do rad tricks and land them with feet on the pedals, at least most of the time.. back in the day, any and all big air jumpers were in my cross-hairs, i always made note of who could fly.. LOL.. kind of an obsession.. bad case of teenage neuroticism..

..

One dude that got my attention was Michael Tyau.. he could get pretty rad and land his arial concoctions.. also Moki could land his jumps too.. and JK, you could jump too man.. judging by the many photographs, after i left in 82 looks like Barry U, Walter worm and some others could get air too.. so

**shrugs shoulders**

.. maybe get a poll going.. though best is to ask the OG riders since riding and seeing/remembering was the way to image the mental big airs.. like, I rode with Mark Mark all the time + Jeffrey Kang too, so I thought they were pretty rad, I wonder what they would say in memory??

Well, I have some pics of Barry Nobriga from the negs.. check this out:

Makiki Jump

and a turndown at Pearl City flats..

I am getting antsy about riding man..

YO Changstar..

On the bunnyhops, I am not sure.. I could bunnyhop picnic tables pretty regularly, I saw Jeff Kang hop some impressive walls back then too, he was the one that made me start using walls, objects and stuff on street while riding on a normal basis.. I was better at bunnyhopping ONTO things rather than over things, though I could clear a trash can.. in the gang I rode with, no one was noted as a big hopper except Jeff..

Wheelie king? Good question.. I would say Walter the worm.. that guy was incredible, especially going downhill and at high speed (almost like a rolling manual sitting down).. i liked to whellie going up a slight gradient, found it easier, but so many guys could wheelie like there was no tommorrow..

btw, Chang you got some serious style mate..

Man, those old pics of the Team Cos boys sure bring back great memories. I remember me, "Slippah" Joe, Walter "Worm", Nelson Ganhinhin, Boo Boo, Raymond Tamayose, Eric Shishido and a few others riding from Kalihi/Liliha side to meet up with the Washington gang, Gary "Pumpkin", Micheal Nakata, BU, Tyson Miyahira, Beeker, and a bunch more for our daily summer break rides. Eventually meet up with Jeff Kang, Dennis Tom, YOU, sometimes Steven Ho, Kirk ?, David Baker, Lopaka Tengan, Marky Mark, Micheal Tyau and others. A huge group of riders going from one jump spot to another, that's something you would probably not see now days. Imagine everyday, you get to ride with at least 15 other guys, AWESOME!

Thanks for the style complement. I always thought I was a better racer than jumper. Most times I could jump OK but it just seems that I could not find a jump that flowed for me. When I did find one I liked then it looked like I was really good but most times I just faded in to the crowd. To me good was the guys that were rad anywhere any jump. I was just part time rad. So here is one that worked for me.

Yes, yes, yes......Michael Tyau. How could I possibly leave out Michael Tyau. Style for miles. He never forced anything. He always had that flow. I remember riding at Cannons one day and Michael was just hitting Tabletops at will. So smooth and so easy. I kept trying to copy him but my bottom leg kept coming off. I was so frustrated. I was landing like a bag of rocks too. Michael would land so smooth. Fintally my freewheel blew up from the harsh landings. Michael tells me "too much one footers". That drove me nuts.......because I wasn't trying to do one footers. I was trying to be like mike!

Back to the best OG jumper. Here's my revised list after P rattled more memories in my brain with some of his comments.

Mike Tyau......smoothest jumper I have watched
P.......I still have memories of him tabletopping a bunnyhop.
Jeff Kang........Something is wrong in his brain so he has no fear. wink.gif
Marky Mark......So anybody found him yet?
Worm.......One of my favorite pics that BU posted. The tabletop at Ala Moana.
Bo Ikeda....I remember him Tabletopping at 9yrs old.
Rockne.......Trust me Changstar. He used to get nasty before he turned in his balls. laugh.gif
Moki.....Best all around rider Hawaii has produced
Miki......I remember him doing one handed tables but he would bail the landings
Guy "Hanalei" Toriki.....The best I have seen for pure height.

P,

Glad to hear the great one will be back on the dirt. Ah.....The planets have finally aligned!!!!!Or is it fear of us begging you to return? Anyway....just a few comments:

♠ Is it for jumping or racing or both?

♠ Does your Road bike have 170's? Is that the reason you want to run 170's? Rock and I have jumped to 175's Changstar runs 180's. I have tried 180's but just cant swing them in a spin. I'm not nocking the 170's at all just curious.

♠ If you are going with a 26 talk to Kevin Lau and try his Black Lightning MTB. You'll be shocked when you ride it. Feels like a 20" BMX.

♠ Keep in mind the rear chainstay length when shopping for a 24 or 26. The longer rear chainstay lenghts make it real difficult to bring the front up. S&M has a minimum rear chainstay of 14 3/4. That frame rocks.

♠ Check out the Fit CR24. I might have gone with this if it came out when I was shopping around for my 24. Click on the link below.

Fit CR24

♠BU is on a 20" and I am slowly building mine. So don't count out the 20" contingency just yet.

♠ Pick Changstars brain. He can dial you in.

By the way welcome home dirt brother!!!!!!!

jk
Jason Chang
Pnut, that is awesome news. JK pretty much nailed it, I'll add a little more. On either 20 or 24 the specs will be very close so nothing radicaly different just cause the wheel are different.

Front end IE Top tube. I am 5'8" and on a 20.5 inch, for my height any longer and the front get harder to pull up, I have tried a 21 and it was OK but I could feel a big difference going to 20.5 and the old days Goose had a TT of 18. So 2.5 more inches up front will give you a lot more room.

On the rear for a cruiser I like 15.5 or less, it can be a little longer for a 20 I say 16 & under. This is due to height of the axle, 20 being a little lower makes it easier to pull up.

Bottom bracket height for my cruiser is 11.75, but anything between 11 and 12 is good, then just play with stem height to dial it in. Old days bikes were lower, ever remember spiking a pedal when pedaling in a turn.

Try out as many peoples bikes before you get one, to see what you like or don't like. It is a bummer when someone else bike feel better than yours.

For cranks 175 should be fine, I am a spinner so I like the extra torque on the gate and I am able to spin it at wide open comfortably.

Let us know what you like, we could be off if say you want a heavier front end. The old days of getting a bike then getting used to it is no longer, you can get a bike and have it dialed in to your riding style like a custom made suit.

Hey bud-

Thanks for the big collection pic .. the blue bike on the far left looks like a bike i was using to freestyle a bit way back in like 1988-1990 or so.. where did it come from??

I'd like to try out your 24 rides, looks like you have two of them..

There is another helpful thread here in Vintage called "Best 24" BMX crusier for me" and it was chock full of information, such as found in this thread too, super descriptions..

Thanks to you all.. 'specially Changstar and Bone on the offers + pics

The S&M 24 frame known as .38 Special looks super good, matches some of the specs mentioned by you guys.. I might be really wanting this one, Mitch at Bike Factory speaks highly of it..

JK, on the cranks, I used 170s on my BMX before and have 170s on my road bike now.. I didn't even think to get 180s though I've noticed quite a few people saying they like it.. the gears are a trip.. also thanks for the CR24 link, that bike looks trick too.. the texas cruzer is sweet too !

I might suggest a top tube of say 21.5 and chainstay between 14.75 and perhaps 15 or so suits me, though I should test ride some bike first.. one important element is the head angle.. the frestyle bike i had before was steep and good for stuff like flair boomerangs and such, however squirrly for jumping, which is my main objective now.. so a 73 instead of 74, you think??

My main thing would be jumping, bunnyhopping and basic street riding, dirt to come later as I get used to the bike, I am so accustomed to the road bike now, pulling and yanking, shifting weight, all that stuff will take me a long time to adjust into ..

I like to have breakfast with my father every saturday morning and generally work after that, but I might be able to nix the work till either night time or sunday morning..

What time you are all fixing to ride? I live in Waikiki, right by Jefferson School on the Ala Wai.. would love to hook up if I can borrow one of Bone's bikes that would be trick ..

thanks jk...
does HK have anything with a kinda soft landing in dirt to kind of practice on before we hit the hard stuff?

Lip to backside is the new way, no soft landings at HK. Unless to check out some mainland launch ramps to foam pit. You'll be fine, just take it easy and work up to bigger longer jumps.

BU,

You'll be fine. Hit the jumps on the inside of HK until you are comfortable. I have been using the inside right jump at HK lately. They build up the jumps on the outside and they are pretty big now.

Russ has been sharing his cool builds with us. So it inspired me to start slapping together my S&M. Here's a pic of where it's at. Still waiting on a few parts to come in. Thanks for the motivation Russ. I sometimes loose the drive since we don't have a track yet.
