lol, yeah thats the one. i didnt want to ask the guy if the bike was for sale because i'm sure that bikes cost plenny. its just good to see old schoolers like myself and talk to them. i'm in the middle of some old school builds right now. i still have my 24" race inc that i am restoring, i got a CW Z, CW TFM, diamond back TK, and a schwinn predator 16" that i working on. its cool to see old bikes still on the road, maybe next time i will talk to the guy riding that bike because i see him and his posse all the time. thanks for the info.

Citric acid powder works as good as oxalic acid! I had some rusty chain ring bolt and a couple of black nuts and bolts, put them in a cup of about one tablespoon of citric acid powder w/ 8-10oz. of warm water overnight, and all the rust came off. made the brown/rust covered bolts look brand new. The nut screw on easily. Good stuff.

Made some changes for riding street. Upgraded the brake system, the MX1000's just wasn't stopping good enough for me. Put Shimano U-brakes on, waayy better stopping. Also put on some Z-Rims I just relaced. I'm diggin' the new look. Took it for a test spin around the block and the freewheel sounded like something was trying to chew it's way out, guess I gotta put out for a new one. Can't ride today anyways, too much rain.

2. Does internet search for Hawaii BMX.
3. Finds VBMX and Changstars "All Things Hawaiian" thread.
4. Decides to recreate chilhood bike. Or in your case rebuild his original childhood bike - lucky dog.
5. OK. The bike is built why don't I ride it.
6. Realizes:
A. How in the world did we stop with these side pull brakes.
B. The frame is so small now I need a laid back seat post.
7. Make adjustments to OG bike with different brakes and seat post.
8. Realizes that no matter what the OS 20 just feels squirrely.
Im still waiting for you to come join us with:
9. Bites the bullit and buys a new school 20 or 24.

The redline cranks are new, the tuffs are the sealed bearing ones from '85. BU got a killer 20" new school, we went riding the other week. Everyone should get together on day, when we all have the time.

For sure 24 is easier to ride. You can start the fun sooner without feeling like you are on the ragged edge of crashing. 20 is squirrely, but is still my goal to get comfortable on it. I think BMX for me is always on a 20, cruiser is like an extra, kinda like racing open. But age has made the cruiser the safe bet. Nothing like that stiff dead sailor feeling in the air to scare the fun out of you.

I tried to go to 24 when I first got back into riding, figure when you get older you change up to a bigger bike. I didn't like the 24 because the maneuverability it didn't have like a 20, and if I didn't have time to ride anywhere else I could just ride in front of the house and do some old school flatland tricks to keep my chops up. At least I was able to ride just a little bit rather then not ride at all. Also I wanted to learn to do front brake tricks and needed all 4 pegs to learn more stuff. Then as time went on instead of riding my old school bikes I started to get into the new school stuff, and wanted to learn how to do peg tricks on ramps like stalls and grinds. That was around 2002-2003 and the bike industry was going into lighter frames and parts, which made it a perfect time to make the change. My first real new school bike was a used 2000 Nyquist X2 my wife bought for me which was real heavy and I was not used to the geometry. So I did my research and finally got a killer deal on a 2002 Standard Bullitt which was the lightest frame out in the market and had the newest stuff that other bikes didn't have like Euro bb, and a lighter metal OX Platinum. Both bikes I still have and still built up as completes. Kind of hard to get rid of as they have a sentimental value to them. Oh yeah still have my cruiser 80's 24" MCS Magnum with Creation forks. May have bring that out again to attach a baby trailer to it for the new addition to the family.

I don't think those things work on 20".
Remember its all about the fun and the type of riding you want to do! Do your research first, ask others and find out there experience's. Also you can go for the old school Retro look with new school parts that look old school. In the end you will save yourself alot of money and less bmx parts laying around.

Geometry has changed alot since the old days. Cruisers are no longer tanks, unless you get one that is too big. My cruiser feels very much like a 20. Klaus has a 26 that rides like a 20. Just gotta take the time to try different bikes and note what you like and don't like. Then hunt for the perfect ride. On cruiser a short back end helps a ton to make less of a tank. I recomend 16 inches or less, mine is 15.5. Up front my top tube is 20.5, back in the old days I ran 20 on the top tube. Everyone in the mainland that was my size was on a 21 TT, I tried that but it was just a little too long so I went right in the middle of what I used to ride and what the current trend is. Then I spent a lot of time on bars and stem height, same thing lot of trial and error before getting it right, new school is much lower than what we all rode. Again going in the middle, not as high as the old days and not as low as new school.

Looking for volunteers will come soon. Most of what needs to be done is laid out. So then looking for people to help with building, organizing, and running of the track will will be next. Anybody handy with a shovel and rake? There will be lots of that and probably the first chore. One thing we are looking for is a idea or hook up to get water and electricity to the track. We do own a gas generator so that will be used till we get a real line put in, but if anyone knows somebody that is a electrician or plumber let me know. I will put out a wish list and you guys can chime in with ideas or people you know that can help.

Mar 12 2009, 12:23 AM
Yes we will want as many of you involved as possible. Basically my part is to set in place the rules and guidelines of the ABA. After that the rest is based on what the riders want. So all of your input is very valuable. The hardest part in the past was most parrents had no BMX backround, so many ideas they had just simply did not work well for the masses, or the riders in general. I want to keep the riders happy, before the parents. Not the other way around. Of course we will consider the the parents but not at the expence of the riders. I have had upset parents because of a jump I built and their kid could not do it well. They wanted me to change it just for one rider. That rider was a novice so the riding skills were still being learned and yet they felt strongly that I should change it so that one rider could win. If the Experts were having trouble and it looked like it was dangerous then of course I would change it, But to change it for a rider that still was working on balancing on the gate is not reason enough. Thats the kind of stuff I had to deal with, so I am so happy to have real adult riders as part of the team. Besides who best would know what is right, than the riders themselves.

Being that most of the late 70's early 80's riders are in their 40's, age wise you will have a class. I think it will be the biggest class based on the number of old timers comming back into it. I dare to predict 2 gates of 40 & over as long as they don't split in half by going 20 inch or cruiser. If we all agree on one bike then the class could be huge.
200 plus? well your bike has more to say on that than any rule in the ABA. Pick your parts wisely and you should be good to go racin. It's the 300 plus class to worry about.
