Jason-
After tuesday's ride, but hurt and legs was wet noodles. Thurs. BU came out w/bmx, I broke the freewheel on my mtb, (I know blasphemer!), but the rest of the guys had a blast. Next week gonna ride, but not sure exactly when. Russ smile.gif

That Nitro Circus looks nuts!!! Could be my favorite show soon.
Hey Rust, how was the ride? Sorry I missed it. My back was telling me to be mellow. My doc says I have the spine of a 60 year old. So I don't ride as much as I would like, but when I do I try to make the most of it. Since no matter how I ride I will pay for it the next few days. That's why I go jumping, gonna be stiff and painfull anyways so might as well get as rad as a 60 year old back can be. I will hook up with you guys soon. Maybe with a few Mililanians too.

Changstar

I know what you mean... so far my back is OK, but my tailbone hurts all the time, even when riding dirt bike. oh well, just suffer through it. gotta have fun now before those days are gone permanently. I'll try to ride bmx at least once a week or maybe twice a week.

BU
Jason Chang
So you town guys gonna race if we get a track? I hope so. I plan on racing as much as time and my body will allow. What I really miss is just going all out, just pushing my limit. Winning and titles are cool, but just doing a hot lap is what is fun for me now. I think inside we all have that competitive drive so blasting a lap with as many of us old timers is what I look forward too. Would love to see a full gate, or even 2 gates(moto's) of a class so we have to work to make the main. Heck it is work just to get a good lap, but a big class adds to the excitement. The one thing that bummed me out before is it seemed like there was always some guys that raced while the others just rode. Then it would switch and the racers would just ride and the others would race. Always wanted to see everybody race at the same time. Since most of you guys were about the same age it would have been one big class. Same with my class, guys would float in and out, but never all racing at the same time. I plan to go untill I have to put knobby's on my wheelchair.

Same here! I'll have to try to put on Graphite Skyways with some skinwall Comp III's or some Hard Anodized Pro Class wheels with Suzue sealed hubs! biggrin.gif

whats up changstar

probably will depend on how big and steep the jumps are. probably could rally some guys to race. we'll see. right now just riding around town is pretty cool.

1983/1984. They were blasting the new Van Halen (1984) cassette tape that just came out when they were riding the quarter pipe. First tgod show was late 1983, then the 2nd show was early 1984 around feb/march.
Jason Chang
I remember they did it a few times at TGO. Maybe 2 or 3 I think.Didn't they have a few contest, like longest wheelie, distance jump, bunny hop? I think Moki won um all. I did push him a little for the distance, we were that last 2 and would creep a little further each time. Somewhere I have a pic, the only protection I had was a helmet. Full speed jumping on pavement in shorts. Looking back I was so lucky I didn't crash.

Changstar
Jason Chang
P, give us your height and weight. so I can Better choose what parts I have that will work for you. Tell us a little about how you like your set up, like high bars or low bars, light front end or heavy. Long cranks or short. Since it seems like you still push equipment to it's limits and beyond, I think we need to aim heavy duty. The get RAD model.

I got an old mongoose, a little crusty though, nothing that a little powder coating can't cure. you probably won't use the motomags, coaster brake... BRING P BACK!! HAS A GOOD RING TO IT.

I think we should aim a little newer than an older Goose. Maybe something within a 10 year old span. We have come a long way in improving bikes, besides we already know he can destoy those old Goose's. Unless thats what he would like to ride.

Jason- I remember the first TGO show it was just a show and that was late of 1983 somewhere. The second one was around Feb of 1984 I entered the bunny hop contest and the long distance jump. I remember placing in the bunny hop contest and won a seat post clamp. Can't remember were I placed, and the long distance jump I remember Moki doing it last minuite. I think Moki and the other guys didn't really enter the contest, because so they can give the younger guys a chance to have a go at it. I think the third contest they had it was sometime around the summer of 1984 as I was already in Calif. I remember calling my friend Robert to see if they had the third one yet, and how it went. I was already in Calif. but was still concerned about what was going on in Hawaii. I think that it was the third one that you and Moki were going head to head. That long distant jump ramp moved alot when you hit it full blast!
Rust808
What do you guys think of an S&M 24" (forgot model name) and Standard Bykes 24". I'm thinking one of these because some say the geometry is "old school". Might wait for the Skyway 24" to match my 20" Oh yeah, I am board. smile.gif
Jason Chang
Hey RusT, how tall are you? That will help me tell you more on those frsmes. Both are very good, mostly choosing the one thats fit best and will ride how you want it to. Not like the old days where you got a new frame and get used to it. Today you can dial in the ride before ever putting it together. Also tell me what you like and don't like about the Skyway, does it feel short or long, front end heavy or light. Stuff like that. I am 5 foot 8 inches tall and like my top tube at 20.5 inches. In the old days my bikes were 20 TT, and a half inch is alot on a frame. Tried a 21 TT and did not like it.

Changstar
Rust808
kev, how's the skyway? U gonna build it?
Rust808
Jason, I'm about the same height as you, maybe a few lbs. heavier smile.gif. You know how a camera adds a few lbs. I always got a few dozen on me. smile.gif I think my Taj's tt was 22.5? felt great. I seen HK, man I don't think I got enough guts to boost those jumps, but you never know.

Hey RusT, found this while surfing the net. It is pretty accurite. Give or take a half inch for personal preference. Normaly a 22 inch TT is for a really tall guy over 6 foot. 20.5 is just right for me, so if you like it a little longer I would say 21 inch is good and you can dial it in with different length stems. I like a short frame and longer stem rather than a longer frame and a short stem. Even if together the combo is the same length, the short frame long stem to me handles quicker and has a easier balance point when lifting the front.

One of my old bikes from Hawaii 1980/81. I really wanted a Powerlite, but my Dad bought me this. Its like a Webco replica, but its made by Honda. My Dad bought it on base at Schofield Barracks. Wheels Hawaii is what I remember the name for the bike. I had it for about a year and painted this color in 81 when the 2 and 3 tone style colors were in on the VW scene. Thats still the same paint and stickers that was on it from back then. It has not been together and ridden since 82. I'm slowly building it back. Original colors of it was Black frame with chrome fork and anodized gold parts. Thought I share since I had it out to take some pics of it to send and share with old friends that remember that bike.

Jason Chang
Wow that frame is going to have a high botom bracket, guess so you could run those old days 7 1/2 inch (190mm)cranks. Is that tab on the rear for a chain guard or a coaster brake? Very cool that you still have your old bike. I had one just like it, it was a 1976 webco.

Your right about the bb set up. I had a hard time adjusting to it and never did get used to it. Seat post angle was a problem too. It almost had the same geometry like a Redline but I think the bb was a little higher. Tab in the rear was for the chain guard. I cut the one on the bb but there is still evidence of the tab still there. I always tried to pass it for a Webco back then.

Hey rusT, when you did the powder coat on the Skyway, did you have to do anything to make sure there was no rust in the tubes? Or does Mekala dip it or something? I want to do a frame, outside is good but worry that maybe there is rust inside and can rust through and crack.

Jason, I did nothing, I always used to spray tons of LPS in all the tubes back then. I'm hoping they were still good on the insides. Mekala only blasted the outsides, doubt they dipped it, maybe you should give yours a bath before taking it to powder. Russ
I'm dipping some bolts in citric acid powder (sour salt) right now, I read it's just as good as oxalic acid, without the harsh chemicals. We'll have to wait and see. smile.gif
