HOWZIT ANDY,
you guys had the longest haul back home from a full day of riding. but, that's when all of us were top shape... remember these pics from TGO quarter pipe demo.

andy shohara rippin it up...

I heard you're still rippin it up... right on...
BU

I do remember those days and shows, I didn't have any pictures from back then though, thanks for posting those BU. I started riding again in August of 07 after 18yrs off. I'm so stoked my son started to pick up riding otherwise I doubt I would have got a bike and started riding again.

This is from last week

Love this pic of Richie. Cop an eyeful of the gearing!

Hey Rock,

I remember you calling me up one day when we were kids. You were asking me if I saw the pic of Richie Anderson in BMXAction. I am not really sure why I remember that conversation. Just do. Someone just posted the pic on another thread. Its a pic worth seeing again.

I always wanted to see Scott Iha in his prime take on Ritchie. Hey Andy, what kind of bike are you on now? Give a run down on the parts and stuff. Are you doing other stuff besides vert? Like street or dirt jumping? Any chance of you doing some racing?

BONE808

I ride vert and park, the only dirt jumping I do is in the backyard in my bowl or off of the hips. I don't ride street or have pegs or anything. If my son decides to race I may consider racing to, but probably just remain pit crew and camera man lol.

back yard before

now, well kind of

I have added a 4' jump box for me and a 2' high jump box for Ethan. I am going to add some grind rails and hand rails at the top of the bowl. I want to add a few more small ramps and stuff here and there.

Hey BU, I tried to pick up where I left off, but it didn't work out that way. On my first day back in the skatepark I must have crashed hard at least 20 times, thought I broke my leg twice that day. It has taken me about 1 1/2 years to get back to this point. The learning curve was steep, I don't think you ever really lose it, I just forgot.

I will take some updated pictures of the back yard soon.

That Black Market frame is the Sickness man! Is the copper hard to maintain?

Keep posting the pics. Like BU said very inspirational!

jk
BONE808
does that bowl ever fill up with water? maybe I'll give klaus a call and check out those black lightning bikes. by the way, nice backyard.

BU
andy619
The bowl is open where the jump box is, water drains out and across the yard. Sometimes when it rains hard, water pools a bit because it doesn't drain fast enough but it soaks in and dries up pretty fast. It doesn't rain very much here and I usually wet it down before I ride, it makes the dirt nice and tacky. I run 90-110psi so the front wheel tends to wash-out a little if the dirt is too dry.
COASTY
Nice pics Andy. Looks like your boy is a chip off the old block. Great to see.

At the 6' deep part of the bowl there is 4' of hard native soil, I only had to fill the top two feet. Down at the two 4' hips there was 1' of hard native soil with 3' of fill. I wheel rolled the whole thing with the bobcat and a full bucket load. I shaped the general transition with the bobcat also. I have a vibra-plate that I also used, two people and a rope for going up and down the transition. Then about 12 hrs with a shovel to fine tune it.

After a good rain I go pound the lip with a sledge hammer and add a little more dirt. It is as hard as concrete, except pedals and pegs can still tear it up pretty good.

riding old kipapa gulch at night on a bmx bike is NUTS. RIDE FIRST, SAFETY LAST.... maybe one day we should do a tantalus run? or maybe not?

BU

Howzit BU,
Did you start riding BMX again yet?I heard you live near the HK trail.

Tantulus was probally some of the most fun I've had on a bike. Not sure my old bones can handle those roots at the end. If you can get the old Town guys together,I'm sure we could get the Mililanians together.---Aloha.

still gotta figure out what kind of bmx to get, they feel weird now, steep headset, super low seat. I don't know if the guys have bmx bikes. I still got MTB's. when the funds come around I might pick something up. I don't think can ride tantalus without a MTB.

BU, try out as many peoples bikes as you can, to see what you like or don't like. For me 24"cruiser was a happy medium. Klaus has a 26" single speed that is the best 26 I have ever rode, it feels like a BMX not a big tank. 20" is still the best for throwing around and getting sideways but many times feels squirly for me. Looking down the road, most likely 24 cruiser will be the bike when we get a new race track. Age groups are 31-15, 36-40, 41-45, 46-50. In 20 inch it is 28-35, 36-40, 41&over with Novice/Intermediate/Expert. Pick a class then get a bike for it. Also "Clip in to win"

Oh yeah, MTB are legal to run in the cruiser class, gears and all.

You been riding lately or what? You know Klaus is in full blown secret training mode.Call me up when you ride.

I remember that quarter pipe! When was that pic taken? Was it during one of those freestyle shows they had back then? The first show/ freestyle contest they had the ramp was on the left side of the entrance door to the shop. The second show/freestyle contest they had the ramp was on the left side of the shop like that in the pic of Andy. If so I was there that day when they took that pic!

does klaus have bikes to test ride? I would probably go in the novice class 41-45. don't know if 20 or 24. no clips for me, like sugi said. don't like the thought of flipping upside down with the bike stuck to me... by the way, when is the new track going to be finished?

Get in touch with klaus to see what he has to try. I just rode his personal 26 and it was awesome. But would be a slight disadvantage on a BMX track. Bigger wheels and longer wheelbase would make it a tad slower off the gate and in tight rhythm sections. As for clips, I will probably do a little of both. Only cause if I do get to the mainland to race then clips are a must. So just want to stay comfortable on them. The first time some scrub pulls you down the first straight you start thinking about giving them a try. They are not as bad as you might think. I am sure people said the same thing when some bikes got rid of coaster brakes and went to hand brakes and a freewheel.

hey gang,
got the skyway from my dad's house. man it looks pretty sad. I guess I stripped the parts a long time ago. still got f/f, cw bars, bear traps. found a small bucket of parts, addicts sprocket, redline sprocket, and some other stuff got to go through...but gonna strip the f/f & bars to see what I'm dealing with.
Rust808

here's the legendary skyway t/a, it's seen better days, but this workhorse raced, jumped, rode countless tantalus trails, and cruised the beach with pride. gotta love the t/a.
