Just in case you are wondering about the HK conditions........Got this from JT:

Shane has posted that the BBQ today is probably cancelled.

I live less than half-a-mile mauka of the track near the fire station and
it's been raining continuously for over 2 hours, not to mention the gusty
winds approx 20 MPH. Overnight it rained sporatically. The weather radar
that I looked at a short time ago shows the entire island of Oahu under
rain conditions. So you can post this if you want to, but it just
confirms what Shane predicted.

Aloha,
Jim

Thanks JT! I'm bummed. I was looking forward to the Jump Jam.

From Rockne's Stuff:

I remember in Kaimuki there was this large reformory called King Daughters Home. It's where the Catholic School nuns that taught at St Patricks and Sacred hearts lived. Eventually it was torn down and replaced with several homes and a shopping center with Longs and what not. During the construction time there was this huge pile of dirt on the 4th avenue side. We used to jump it every now and then on our way home from Triangles in Palolo.

Rockne. I'm guessing about 1978. Rockne is running one of Bob Haro's first production number plates which were called Factory Plates. Remember those? Rockne also rockin some sweet Sunshine sealed hubs on his Team Goose.

Sugi,

The only OG's there were JT, Russel Hirata, James Katasako, and myself. Kata brought his newly finished S&M 24. Damn that thing is sweet. I knew it was going to be trick since Kata's bikes were always trick. But, seriously it was INSANELY TRICK!!!!!!! He let us ride it and it reminded me of my old Schwinn Sting. You know when you can just feel the bike pulling when you are pedaling. S&M's geometry is pretty damned dialed. Unfortunately when Kata and Russel showed up so did the rain. So I didn't get pics. Was still a great time catching up with old friends. I was happy to be there even with the rain.

Here's a few stills that JT pulled from the helmet cam video(Thanks JT):

Wish we had those kinds of toys back in the day! Helmet video and digital cameras. Cool pics! looks like you all had fun until the rain came.
Jason Chang
JK, don't you have one of those new S&M cruisers too? When ya gonna bust it out? I just set up my 20 again, I was gonna sell it so I put on parts that I wasn't going to use, now I put it back with the stuff I like. What a difference, put back 8 inch bars, from 7 inch ones. World of difference. Put some Flights on it 180mm, with a 44-16. It felt hard, I am getting pretty weak. Good to hear Kata got a bike, yeah I always remember him having his bike all tricked out and dailed in. When he would jump all you could hear was his loud freewheel, that made me want a loud freewheel. I gotta go up one tooth on my cruiser now. Is Kata on here? I would like a rundown on his set up and pics, Funny seems we all went with Chromo frames. Except Rock. Man 41-45 cruiser is gonna be so killer. When is the next ride? Maybe we should hit up Kailua for something new.

Changstar
Jeremy K.
I been slacking on the S&M since I'm working on my 20". Kata is on here hiding in the shadows. Hopefully we can get him to post some pics and give us the breakdown. I remember his freewheel BITD. I'm pretty sure it was a Schwinn freewheel. I remember asking him about it and then running one on my Sting too. He must like the loud freewheels - he's running some blue annodized King hubs. Kings are pretty loud too. I was pretty happy to ride his bike. Made me realize I made the right choice with the S&M. I'll start building the S&M after I have it chromed here in town. Gonna go for that old school look. cool.gif

Hey guys-

I've been out of the mix for a bit now, my life is in the fast lane, blow up doll and all..

The great and affable Russell detailed my car a few weeks ago, he looks in as good a shape as ever, I've been on the road bike pretty consistently and feeling fairly good.. as to BMX, I went to visit the Bike Shop once more and could only drool at the machines I saw there..

I've more pics to post, however having just moved I must locate the negatives again.. wish me luck

Keep up the postings and pics/videos, very RAD indeed..

Off-road park closer to reality
Land clearing on Sand Island could begin next month
Read comments (1)Recommend (2)Print this page E-mail this article Share Del.icio.us

After lengthy permit-process delays, volunteers hope to start clearing land for a planned off-roaders park in Sand Island as early as next month.

The park won't open with a big splash — as originally planned in summer 2007 — but instead will open in phases, starting with a course for mainly beginner BMX bikers. Courses for all-terrain vehicles, four-wheelers and off-highway motorcycles will follow.

The 32-acre waterfront park is the culmination of a first-of-its-kind partnership between off-roaders of all kinds and the state, which has recognized off-roading as a growing recreational activity.

The park was originally set to open in fall 2007, but it has been plagued with delays.

Part of the problem was officials weren't sure which permits the park needed.

"This is such an out-of-the-box project," said Curt Cottrell, state trail and access program manager, who has been helping set up the Sand Island park.

Cottrell was able to get the plan off the ground with about $30,000 in federal funds, about $14,000 of which has already been spent on design and planning. Most of the grading work, along with operations at the park, will be done by volunteers eager to see the project through.

Cottrell said the park could get the green light as early as January. Once all the approvals are received, construction of a course for BMX riders would start, wrapping up in about two weeks. The park would open to riders for a fee shortly after that.

It would take several additional months for subsequent off-road courses to open.

The state Department of Land and Natural Resources already has given the off-roaders group undertaking the project a two-year lease for the land, next to Sand Island State Park. The two-year period will start once DLNR has approved a right-of-entry permit for the group, likely in January.

The project is designed to curb illegal off-road driving — a longtime problem on remote beaches and other public and private lands statewide. Once completed, the park will be O'ahu's first legal off-road venue for four-wheelers, which is a term that includes anything from sport utility vehicles to monster trucks, and only the second for off-road motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles — small three- or four-wheelers with handlebars.

Off-roaders say the new park will mean less wear and tear on the Kahuku Motocross park, which is full to capacity most weekends, and on hot spots for four-wheelers, including Ka'ena Point. Reid Shimabukuro, who has been instrumental in setting up the Sand Island park, said he is frustrated by the pace of work but confident it will get done.

Shimabukuro added that he has high hopes for the park.

"We're right in the heart of Honolulu," he said.

A fee schedule for the park has not yet been released.

The fees would cover insurance and other incidentals.

The site where the park is planned has never been used, and has no master plan.

In the 1970s, there was some hope of turning it into a recreational area for watercraft, but the idea died. There is a locked gate separating it from Sand Island State Park. An emergency-access road circles the property and provides a buffer between what will be courses and the ocean.

The top pic is of Brennen Momtgomery #3 and his older brother Jason #4. Brennan passed away last yera in his sleep from a brain anurism. Very sad story. He was in his early 30's. Jason his brother still lives in Texas. Their family use to run the Hickam track. They were a great family and good freinds to my wife and I while we lived in Hawaii.

R.I.P. my BMX brother

I sdtand corrected. The #3 rider is Vann Johnson. Vann PM'd me and let me know. He thinks it's from around '87.

The story about Brennan is true and I was sad to hear of his passing.

So who's gonna be ready for the first race and who's gonna wait till after the first race to start training? i am lazy so I'll wait and suffer the first few races and hope for the best. I am hoping I can find some old skills while everyone trys to learn a rythm section since we never had those BITD.

Changstar
Jeremy K.
I'll be there! Will I be ready? No. I'm just hoping there will be enough guys racing to help bring the sport back here. So who's gonna race 20 with me? anyone?

jk
Jason Chang
Guys should get together and choose a class to run. so we don't have 4 guys on cruiser and 4 guys on 20 inch. When we could have 8 riders in a class. Unless you are gonna run both. 20 inch has an advantage of starting at novice and working your way up. I think it is 8 wins to be intermediate, then 25 wins to be Expert. Cruiser is just by age but it is a more foregiving bike that allows you to make mistakes and not kill yourself. 20 inch will always have you race against riders of similar speed and skill. Cruiser could put you against the fastest riders in your age group, especialy when in the mainland. Cruiser class at a national would put you on the gate with the fastest in the nation, if not the world. My choice would be to race cruiser at locals and save 20 inch for big locals or the mainland, where I can race as a Inter.

41 and over is cool......Now how about 43-44? biggrin.gif

Changstar,

I'm guessing all of us older guys will race Cruiser. If younger guys race they'll probably race 20. Then I guess I'll have to gate some kids. laugh.gif

jk
Jason Chang
So is Kata maybe game to race again? How about BC? Actualy of the guys back riding now, how many of you would do it again?

Changstar
Jeremy K.
Changstar,

I'm not even sure. Kinda worries me. Now that it seems we will have the track will we have the guys. The guys that will probably race Cruiser no matter what is: Russell Hirata, Kevin Lau, You and Me. Hopefully Katasako is in too.

I heard that Rory wont race. I'm hoping he will come on here and tell me to shut the F up and prove me wrong. I am guessing that a few MTBers are game too. I have been trying to keep active on DHhawaii with the BMX side. Just so they know we are still around. There are a few active MTBers who used to race in the mainland and have asked me about racing here. I'm sure they will race.

I keep telling Rockne that we gotta be active on the forums to help generate interest. But, obviously it falls on deaf ears. Changstar, I know you are helping spread the word in a positive way and will be a big part of the track. If there is anything that I can do to help just let me know.

jk

Jason,

I'm to old and fat to race again. But I will get my brother to bring his son down to race. He is about 9 years old . Hopefully there wil be enough young kids that will want to race. Next time I see John Boyle I will let him know that there is a track being built.

BC
Jeremy K.
Hey BC,

Who cares. Come out and hang when the track is built. Ride with us during practice days at the track. Who cares what we look like. We all changed. All us old school HBMXers are like family anyway. Dosen't matter.

jk
KennyBrown
Man if I was there I would give it a shot....... Gotta get back the title that I never had from Changstar (that made me laugh outloud).

Kenny
Jason Chang
I'm sure Moki would be game. Rockne got to feel some pressure but thats part of the fun. Testing yourself, pushing the limits. Trying to learn new days skills. Many want a chance at trying to race against former top dogs or try on top dogs from another era. How cool would it be to see 70's, 80's, 90's champions battle. Add in some fast MTB's we got a good thing going and some hefty bragging rights.

bmxjoe nailed it right there. Its all about having fun with old friends and new.

Of course everyone wants to win but its an odd circumstance with the whole braggging rights thing. Lets say I was some guy who raced but could never beat the likes of Rory, Rockne, Moki, Malvert, Buddy, Llacuna, Changstar etc. All the fast guys. Now we all took on different lives with different challenges and some of us stayed active and some didn't. Now BMX comes around and some 25 plus years later we all race again. All at different levels of fitness and life challenges. Now I finally beat all the greats......do I have bragging rights? Yes and No.....You won that day and thats all man.

Nothing takes away the glory those guys had at the toughest time in BMX. When we were all in High School riding and training. It was a level playing field then. Fighting thru countless moto's just to make the main in the heyday of BMX. Those guys are legends to me and you cant take away from that.....NEVER.....You dig?

Evryone knows I want to beat Rockne. But, is it because he always smoked me? Not even. Its because we are good friends and just like to challenge each other. He will always be faster to me no matter what. No matter who wins now. Nothing will take away the past. RESPECT was earned many moons ago.

History has beem written, we just are starting a new chapter. In a way it is cool that it is like starting over again. Kinda feels like that first race again and what do we do to make ourselves better. The past makes for good stories, marks were set and we all stive to be a good as we can. I didn't mean to single Rock out, I have a ton of respect for him and his name just came to me as I wrote. It's just the competitive drive that made us what we were and I wonder what 25 years has done to our view of racing again. man it's gonna be fun.
