Hey P, yeah if you can talk JK into parting with that Badd it is an awesome cruiser, and chromo too. If not let me know, I have quite a few items in my garage, including a cruiser. How tall are you? that way I know what stuff will work for you as I am 5 foot 8, so much of my stuff is set for me or I stopped using them cause I was too short. Then again if you want the feel of the old days you may want them slightly smaller cause that's how things were BITD. My cruiser has top tube of 22" which was too long for me. I am sure you are familier with sizing as road bikes are even more specific. Sounds like you are still hard on bikes so chromo would be a good choice depending on how crazy you wanna get. For me, I am lighter and waaay less crazy so I am on more light weight racing stuff. I figure my harshest day riding today is nowhere near what I did 20 years ago. I must admit having a light bike makes me feel faster than I really am. Yeah put some easy gearing on so it looks like your feet are going really fast, ha ha ha. I am sure in no time you will be one of the FFF. Fast, flat, & over forty.

Changstar

Thanks Changstar, seeing these pics of JK jumping is just getting me all fired up LOL

Howsaboudditt, JK gonna consider selling that BADD bike?? I should consult with Russel, that guy has a full stock of all kinds of bike stuff..

I am 5ft 8inch tall (weight witheld for fear of embarrasment and eventual ostrisization).. my road bike is a 53 cm, though I prefer a fraction shorter, a 52cm is best or thereabouts.. can't get much more technically sizable than that.. I would only consider BMX chromo because I don't want to break the bike and break myself in the same frame of occurence, that could be a bad combo.. surely, I'd not being doing anything NEAR the old days or JK's current days, but I like jumping curbs and the like, I miss punching around here and there going near and far, blessing the pavement with the occasional cross-up... we'll see though, I am in no real rush..

See what you have in your stash that you are willing to sell and part with.. I'd prefer to purchase a fully built bike though, ride-ready..

I might start off doing stuff like this:

so I'll need some fairly sturdy wheels and cranks..

Thanks to all of you for stirring the long lost BMX cravings deep in my soul.. once more

Sorry my dirt brother. I really dig the BADD frame.

Glad to see ya posting again. I really love the Shimano Table pic you posted. I have been tweaking my bars a little more lately trying to get the Shimano in there. Lawrence put in a great deal of work yesterday fixing up the Tabletop jump. That thing is STEEP now. It'll launch you 5ft up without even pulling up. I met a few OG's out there this afternoon. Had some good times poking fun at them trying to get them to race each other in a sprint match race.

I was wondering when someone was gonna hit da skateparks there! I ride park alot here in Calif. my best advice is to find lines almost like dirt jumps, only thing its permenent because its build on cement now. I was watching the Odyssey video Electronical and it has some riding that was done at some skateparks in Hawaii and a wooden halfpipe some where out there. Find some good skatepark riding dvd and learn from them. Have fun!

BMXJoe,

I have been watching some DJ/skatepark vid's. Man I wanna be able to do some of that shiz! Manana looks like a good place to learn. There's a section on the Diamond Head wall that I call the "chicken wall". You can hit the vert side and land on the "chicken wall". Perfect for learning. I don't have the comfort to try and go all vert side. I'll try again early Sunday morning before work. Here's a pic of the "chicken wall" and me in full chicken mode. I'll try and get better pics Sunday. Hopefully I can CONvince the wifey into coming along!

jk

Jason Chang
So who took the pic? Are you hitting it like a arial, straight up then air 180 and back down? Or more like a big berm and getting air at the top?

Changstar
Jeremy K.
Changstar,

I took the pics myself. Like how I did the crash sequence. I couldn't 180 back in. So I guess it was like airing out on a berm. Well a vertical berm. It's fun but I am uncomfortable at the same time. Like I said I was in full chicken mode. blush.gif

jk
Jason Chang
Thats looks sooo fun and scary at the same time. Concrete is not at all forgiving. Are ya gonna try that clipped in? Just kidding. Just to throw this out there, but if we organize a get together, besides seeing each other as the main attraction what all do you all have that we can display?

Changstar
bmx joe
Jeremy-Thats how you get started, one trick at a time! Its a good transfer to learn from! Thats also a good place to learn ally oop transfers. Is there room to ride on top of the vert wall? Would be good practice to ride up and drop in from there, or at first footplant and footplant drop in. Its gonna open a whole new type of riding for you guys if you guys get into this. Next thing you know your gonna be back on 20" bikes with 4 pegs front and back brakes killing it. If you can look up a video of Dave Volker/ Lord Volker video he did some years back you can learn some mean tranfers he does on stuff like that. He does a table top ally Oop on a transfer the same as that one your riding on and goes as high as the top of the fence. Airing on vert is almost the same as the berm style air that you were talking about, but that is called a carved air. For you kind of carving to the right pop a small 45 degree bunny hoop under the vert and enter back in. As you get better at it you can start popping it over the vert alittle with more speed, but make sure you push forward so you clear your back tire over the coping. Other wise you case the back tire and may wash out head first over the bars or heading for a disaster. Check our sjbmx.com, my friend Chris just put up video of Cunningham Park were me and Marlo ride at. Sorry no video of us, but our friends that ride there. Let the young guns get the video time, but maybe us old guys will get in there soon! Keep up the riding guys! Be safe and wear your gear expecially at the cement parks! I wish I could be there to ride with you guys! Someday! biggrin.gif
bmx joe
Oh yeah forgot--when you get better with the carved airs you can start learning them the 180 style/ old school style thats what I call it. Takes more speed, but you get more height.
Jeremy K.
BMXJoe,

Thanks for the tips. I checked out SJBMX.com and watched the vid. Looks like such a cool place to ride. Be great to have some fun there. The Hawaii Kai track is such a treck from Mililani. So I'm trying to figure out some alternate places to ride. I checked out the jumps at Kalaheo one day. They have some insane wooden jumps as well as some dirt jumps. But, its just about as far as Hawaii Kai. And Honestly I didn't have the stones to hit the wood jumps. The other places like Royal Summit, Makakilo, Timber Line, and St. Louis all are MTB oriented. If the Sand Island track ever gets the Nod I think there will be a resurgence for BMX here. But, right now the sport is struggling in Hawaii.

You gotta post some pics of you riding. I would love to see pics of what the transplanted Hawaiians are doing. Or even pics of the National that you and Buddy checked out.

JK
bmx joe
Jeremy--Would like to see pics of the wooden jumps. Some guys ride those mtn bikes/suspension bikes at skateparks and dirt trails/jumps out here without getting hassled by the others, so everyone kinds of co-exist. If you go enough I guess it won't matter what you ride because you will be considered a local, if not its always good to get a good early morning session that way you get out there before it gets hot and you have the rest of the day to do other things. First time I ever saw some real freestyle riding other then pics from the magazines was about 1983-1984 at the first and second freestyle show and contest at The Great Outdoors bike shop. Mongoose Van blasting some tunes Jon on the MC and Moki airing the quarter pipe, something I never saw done other then pics. We tried doing the same riding the suger cane water cannals and stuff, but it wasn't the same. Also watching Walter. W and another asian rider doing those roll up to fakie roll backs on the quarter. From then on I always wanted to know how to ride fakies/roll backs. It would take me about 1 1/2 years until I did ride a wooden halfpipe and learn how to ride backwards. I didn't like to ride ramps back then and dirt jumps were far so I stayed with flatland tricks until the rolling tricks came out then got a car and quit. Today I'm lucky to have 4 cement parks in a 6 mile radius and plenty of other places about 20 min or so drive to go to. I didn't get any pics at the Nationals but it was great to be out there and hang out with some old and new friends. Meeting Buddy was cool, even though he went out of his way just to make it out there for a little while. His wife was expecting soon so he made the trip short so he can head back and be with the wife.
Jeremy K.
bmx joe,

I'll try and get some pics of the Kalaheo jumps when I go back out there. Or you can check out dhhawaii.com too. There's some pics and video's there. I seen Walter ride in the parking lot of The Bike Shop. I was amazed at what he could do. I wasn't fortunate enough to see any of the TGO contests. You are definately lucky to have so many riding places close to home. It's frustrating right now to drive from Mililani to Hawaii Kai to ride. The cost of gas just kills you. So the closer skate parks is definately where I'll spend some riding time. Buddy is a very cool guy. Hopefully he will come out more after things get a little easier with the new family addition.

jk
Jeremy K.
Few more riding pics. Friday evening the wife and I rode RS. Sat morning we rode HK. Came close to going OTB on the second pic and sprained my wrist. Getting old sucks! I get injured every week or so riding.

jk

Jason Chang
Is it me or your wife has a lot less safety equipment used than you? I can't really talk since most times I don't even wear a helmet. Just surprised after hearing her story of having a big crash. Maybe I should be more safety conscious. Did she race BMX or MTB before?

Changstar
Jeremy K.
I have to get her some knee/shin pads. She wears shin guards under her funky socks when she rides HK. I never wore safety equipment before either. But, I have to admit the full face helmet already saved me some serious dental work and the knee pads already paid for themselves. Funny thing is I feel weird when I ride without gear now. She never rode until the HK track. She rode my cruiser the other day at HK and immediately started riding better. So we are going to build the Crupi for her since its a similar geo to the BADD with the short rear chainstays.

jk
Jason Chang
How many newer style bikes do you have now? Didn't you start out with a Redline? Or was that a 20 inch Redline? Now you have a Crupi too, dang the garage must be filling up, which is always cool. Better to have more than not enough plus you will have an extra bike for a buddy if they don't have one. I know with most women you can use expert size stuff since they are shorter and lighter. Unless they are getting big air and hard landings. I was just looking around my garage and am going to build up an old Redline expert cruiser for my wife. Since she will not be jumping, I can use alum cranks and 1 3/8 rims and tires.

Changstar

Whatsup fellas, long time yeah..................................

Been out buying more bikes and I just picked up a DiamondBack but couldn't tell you any info about it. Some help would be great. The serial number is ACB5G02742.

Please help.

Kenny
bmx joe
whats up Kenny?! Your collection most be getting big? I still got Mongoose frame, but I think I'm going to build it up. Saw your post and pic of Diamond Back, looks to be mid school stuff. 1 1/8 threadless head set and stem gives it away. As for serial numbers I don't know how to read this one, as the older ones were an easier number system to read from.
Jeremy K.
Rode HK in the evening with a few MTBers. Here's the last pic of the day:

Jeremy K.
BMX Joe sent me some cool riding pics. Hope you enjoy them as much as I did. I'm pumped to hit the skateparks now!

Jeremy,
Here are some pics of me and Marlo riding today at Cunningham. We just took only a few with the short time we had left before the session was over. If you can post them up on Vintage that will be cool, as I have not had the time to learn how to post pics on there. One of them is Marlo going super high outside of the big pipe, and the 2 pics of me doing an ally Oop wall ride and jumping over the step up. As you can see even though its required to use safety equipment I always were it anyway, saved me many times! Wish I could have wear that kind of stuff back then! lol!
Keep up the riding and also posting on Vintage. I enjoy the great storys and stuff!

Enjoy!

Bmx Joe / Joe

Here is a pic of me checking out Ron Wilkerson's copy of that limited edition Freestyle Book when it first came out!
I had to take a pic with it as I though it would have been my only time with one of those! Wish I had one for myself. It was pretty cool just looking at all the pics and stories inside of it! Also pic of my Mongoose that I had back in Hawaii, only thing it is set up like my Nickle chrome bike I had back in 1980. I'm restoring it like I had it back in 1984 and all of the parts that are on it now are going on my Nickle Chrome Mongoose. That is the original frame I had back in Hawaii with Pro Class stem and bars, but I'm going to put some other bars as I can't fit the number plate I had back then on. I don't want to cut it down like I did back then. Haro Tech number plate.

jk

bmx joe
Jeremy- Thanks for posting up pics! Marlo and his son amazes me on how well they progressed riding in only 4 months! Its great to have riding friends expecially if your around the same age. Dirt jumps around here tend to get messed up and you end up fixing things more then riding, thats why I mostly stay with skatepark riding. I like to ride period! does not matter what it is, its all about finding something positive about it and have fun! Keep watching those skatepark dvds and find some awesome lines! In time you'll start to make up your own! biggrin.gif
KennyBrown
Back again for an update. I really need to get back out riding I think. It is coold to see the old guys still out doing it.
Jason Chang
Who you callin old?? Ha ha ha.

Changstar
KennyBrown
Ok OK.............. Older! How's that.

Ken
bmx joe
Yeah! when you start to ride again that first year ends up speeding up the age process as muscle, bones, joints parts of your body that has not been used like that in a long time takes a pounding etc. Ask Marlo his back is giving him problems right now, but in time it will heal. When I first started it was things like that muscle cramps in the legs, forearms, back. Joints, knees ached but after that first year things started to turn around and in time I healed and my stemina and endurance got alot better when I rode. I guess the age process then starts to turn backwards from 39 to feeling about 50 then feeling 18 years old again! Also added safety gear was add on like shin, ankle guards, gloves with the regular stuff. So as you get older more armer is add on. The key is to take your time, be patient, safe and stay in your limits. You'll get to be a good rider in time, but if you end up getting hurt your come back will be short stayed and the experience of something you enjoyed as a kid will not be as it once was. So for you older guys if you can train like a football player you should be all good and ready to ride!
Jason Chang
For sure get some stamina. No fun if you get tired just as the fun starts. Also work slowly into it, let your muscles have time to adjust to the strain. I know my first day out I pulled a muscle in my back and actually had a small tear where my hip and back are linked. But I have to say it was still so much fun and worth it. I only made it worse by still riding after I felt the pull. Gates will even be tougher, since that is a harder pull and strain on the back.

Changstar
KennyBrown
I look forward to going out and riding again but I just need to get one bike together (safely that is) and as mentioned get out and get some gear.

bmx joe
That is so great that things like this happens! Without sites like this one and others, the interest in old school bmx, either building and collecting bikes, riding bmx now, sharing stories of those good old days all comes full circle now. Just being involved with it not just riding or being riders but we can't forget about the others behind the scenes. You guys know what I mean. Who would have thought things like this would happen 20 some years later. To have things like this share great memories and stories with others shows that it was not a waste of time just because it was a bmx bike back then. Hope to see more get togethers!

From JT:

The reunion was just awesome. Haven’t seen some of the riders and parents for 20+ years. Having the parents who were active BITD made it extra special.

A big mahalo to James & Sheri Katasako for hosting the event (not Jim’s house). Their hospitality is greatly appreciated.

To the Mililanians,
Spanky called me a few days ago and said he's ready to ride.I guess his back is all healed up and ready to get re-injured on a few doubles biggrin.gif .So when is the next ride?I think I'm free this Sunday.Anybody down?We need the water hoses and fitting.

Klaus,
What's going on with BikeFactory?I see some new signage in the window. When are they opening?
Jason Chang
I'll shoot for this Sun, I got the hoses and the fitting. Those pics of the reunion was great. I remember the days when you could just about see all of them at the races. Good to see Barry made it to rep the new breed of 80's guys along with all the original pioneers. So how many of you can we get on pedals again? That would really be fun. Boy we got some catching up to do, JK is killin it.

Ok so last night I was thinking and wanted to know if someone might have this in their little folder of nostalgia. I can't remember if it was posted in the paper or if it was posted elsewhere but in 1981-1982 did they post a listing of the top 100 riders in Hawaii? The reason I ask is I think I actually made the list at #99. Curious if someone has that list. And I know that Jason had to be above me on that list as you beat me in the State Finals back then.
