Aloha Kevin! I thought it was you and Andy that did the GT tour in Mililani???? darn my pics are too big to attach here, If you check out www.os-bmx.com that's were I saw Andy's birthday pictures. He still rides good!
Wow sorry to hear about his family! He told me that he did not have much pictures of him riding.
I saw Wally's website.. Wow things have changed for him.
Have you heard from Adam or Jordan?
I miss riding over to honolulu...
I just lost my mother back in July... We are selling both houses back there. I live here in Dallas, TX with my wife and kids, I'm a front end manager for Costco. And I'm restoring a 84 Torker pro xl. I'm teaching my 8 year old son how to ride. He has it easy... he does not have to learn how to ride with slippers! lol
Well dude shoot me line again I'd like to hear from ya!

How about Michael Woo? He lived right across the street from Triangle Park, adjacent to the Catholic church on the corner. Man, during summer time the wind would blow down from inside the valley and all the dirt/dust kicked up from us riders would send clouds of "locus-like dirt" invasions straight to those houses.. OMG the parents would go ballistic LOL.. eventually remember the city put up those stupid pipes and chains right in front of the jumps? We'd cut the chains, city would replace them, etc

P,

I definately remember Michael Woo from right across from Triangles. As for those stupid pipes and chains. When the C&C put them up the first time......I cut the chain's....and got arrested for it. Was charged with vandalism. Needless to say my parents were not too happy. I got grounded for a month solid. No bike! And it was summer time. It was pure hell. You know how important riding was to us at the time.

That pic of your gang is so cool. I forgot many of the names but I recognize the faces. Keep posting any pics from BITD....Back In The Day......I am eating this up!

KL,

I used to race for McCully for a while. But, I spent alot of time hanging out at Safari Cycles. Jim was a real cool mellow guy. I wonder how he's doing. Do you have any idea of how I can get in touch with him? He used to take pics and videos at all the races. What I wouldn't pay to get a hold of those.

I'm trying to build a Team Jag. Just like the one I used to have. It's costing a small fortune. The prices on OG stuff is retarded. Heres a pic of my old bike.......

Here's the bike I'm building.......

I recently changed the bars to redline vbars and the stem to a redline double clamp. I also added some flight cranks. Living in the past I tell you!

Later Hawaiians,

jk,

i think that wally at bikefactory still talks to him. that would be the best way. jim used to have racer video, a video editing business, but i'm not too sure if he still does it.

Nice pics, I wish I had some shots of my old Mongoose available. Nuts!

I saw Michael Woo a couple of years ago, we had a good chat, was at some fund raiser in town, I should have gotten his contact info. He is around on the island though, somewhere.

Good luck on restoring the Jag, sweet bike. Back then I remember all kinds of bikes. Tyau had an SE, Mark Miyashiro rode a Robinson, Reid Kawamae had both an FMF and Cooks Brothers, Raymond Motosue also rode Cooks Brothers.. Lance Nishida had a Yamaha and my street neighbor rode a Roger Decoster (sp??).. it looked like a 'Goose but the hole near the neck was oval-shaped. My first bike was a red Webco with Ashtabula forks, neck and cranks. This was in 76 or 77, I don't recall. I just know I broke the frame and rode a borrowed bike for awhile after that. Mark and Cosmo sponsored me a Mongoose frame thereafter and I am forever grateful.

Hot DANG, now I know who the "first cutter" was.. haha **bangs gavel** guilty as charged LOL. Grounded for a month, that hurts sooo bad. I'd have gone insane, then again it would've been a stretch for me, having been born in a strait jacket to begin with... I used to lie in bed at night analyzing and evaluating the day's events, visualizing each jump over and over again, using mind control to marry my iceberg-like dream to my body's reality.. I could actually feel the timing when launching off the lip of the jump, how about you guys??
Not riding back then was torture.. I'd ride even if I was injured!

Riding was all that mattered to me, not even school or girls had a bigger place of importance. Getting grounded would be like recurring castration in typical month-long Groundhog Day fashion.

Do you remember Todd Zukeran?

Here he is at Pearl City flats getting off.

I think Todd rode a Redline frame later, I forget what kind of bike he rode in this shot.

Just another dirt-loving bunny..

I don't mean to interject a question in your post, however can you identify this guy?

He is wearing a McCully jersey. Shot in Pearl City.

Can you recognize anyone nearby?

Aloha Thumper,

Lots of love but I have no pictures of Rory!

Calling all Hawaii BMXers -- post up your pics LOL

Then again, I'm new to this site. Maybe in another thread some place here??

Postscript: Robert Tang is Rockne's older brother, he was in my auto mechanics class... sat right next to me, I remember checking out all the pictures he'd bring to class. They called me "the guy with the swivel chair" because the teacher would keep calling on me to face forwards LOL. I might be able to contact Robert through another guy that works here downtown. I'm sure Robert has old school pics of the top Hawaii racers and probably dirt jumpers too.

To be continued..

Jeremy K.
P,

I'm not sure who the guy in the McCully pic is. Was probably way before I raced for McCully. At one time their team was huge. Maybe Jason Chang will chime in and let us know. I believe he hung out more on Pearl City side with Kevin Sano guys.

Dude, you have the coolest shots! Takes me back in time that is for sure. Where was Pearl City Flats? I s that where the Waiau fire Station is now?

Thumper,

Believe me. Everyone who rode BITD has love for Rory. He is legendary here and super cool to boot. The guy was so fast and smooth.......best of all he had no ego. I rode with him a few times when he was No.1 he would chase down city buses and draft them just spinning his 43 16 gearing. I never forgot how fast he was. I believe there is pics of him at the beginning of the thread. I wish I had some - I would definately have posted them.

P,

I'm with you man! Sure wish more Hawaiians would post! I emailed a link to this thread to Steven Nakasone and Alex Adams last night. Hopefully they will post. Remember them. Steven used to hang at Cannons alot and Alex used to ride for Eki Cyclery. I see them every now and then. They both work for the HFD too. I hope you can get in touch with Robert! Rolland was or still is a huge vintage surfboard collector. I see articles on him every now and then.

Talk to you guys soon,

JK

I wish I could describe to you better. I live in town now and have not checked out Pearl City heights in many years. I know that we'd ride from like 16th avenue in Kaimuki out to Magic Island and head towards Aloha Tower and west to the viaduct near the airport. There were nice curbs to jump on the way out there. When we got near Pearlridge it was straight up the hill to flats area, I mean thats what we called it. Same place as shown in the pic that KevLau posted. See the big hill drop.

Here:

Look in the background of this picture of Reid (Eric standing). The rows of houses in the back appear to be Aiea Heights horizon, near Pearl City zip code. On the left of the pic should be the fire station, though not sure if thats Waiau locale. I believe there is a steakhouse right before you ride up the hill over the H1 freeway. There was an old drive-inn movie theatre also. I'm sure Jason Chang can verify this, anyone else who knows the west side.

..

Hey, I found this racing pic of Steven C and Lance Nishida.

Snapped at Campbell Industrial Park track, look at Lance's yellow Yamaha. At least I think it's a Yamaha frame. See his yellow addicks sprocket, the worse invention in BMX since clothes-pins to Bee playing cards in the spokes. Lance lives in my cousin's former house in Palolo Valley. Married with children, he does insurance sales now. He lives 4 houses from my sister in the same lane so we chat whenever I go over to visit. He would laugh seeing I have this picture of him in a race!

I will point him to this website next time I go over.

..

Bjork's swan sends its regards.

P,

I'm pretty sure that's where I was thinking about. Now it's a huge park and the Waiau Fire Station is at the lower end of the park. What a cool history! During work we often go by where the Castle Park Race Track was. Its kinda weird knowing you once raced where a McDonalds and Starbucks and Jamba Juice is now. Alex Adams emailed my and said he will try and dig up some old pics and post them. I'm looking forward to that. I also got in touch with Jim from Safari Cycles in Kahala. I'm hoping to catch up with him soon. If the new track at Sand Island opens up we all should get together! Would be cool to see some old BMXers on the dirt again.

I look forward to your pics and posts everyday!

Stay cool bro,
JK

I guess I eat too much Diner's for lunch when I worked with you at Bikefactory. When I get my ride up I'm going to drop more weight. My son's turning 9 and he's going to start riding with me. The BMXMUSESUM site is a very cool site... tons of info. but os.bmx allows bigger files. I think some of the other riders that you talk with are on os.bmx then the others. Nice shoes mate. And Mongoose jersey too. Excellent!

NO STYLE:

An addicks sprocket, which didn't last long. My best school clothes too - a real fashion statement on the race track, ya think?? On this day I got 2nd 2nd 2nd and was blown away in the main. But I looked nice though, a real cartoon character prancing about on the Campbell Industrial Park catwalk LOL.

I used to live up near Waiau back in 1976 or 1977. I went to Waiau elementry for about a year before we moved to the Big Island. Played alot in the Canal or water channel right along side of the freeway next to those town homes, thats were we lived. I moved to Waimanalo for a few years until we ended up back on the Leeward side moving to Waipahu in 1979/80. Us Waipahu riders used make the trek to Magic Island/Ala Mouanas and down town every weekend. Along the way we used to hit up all the bike shops and all of the dirt jumps. I know some of us crossed paths along the way but it has been a long time. I still have my Team Mongoose that I rode back then with some of the original parts that I had like Pro Class stem that I bought at The Great Outdoors bike shop/ The Bike shop. Skyway brake pads,Cal Lite pads missing the frame pad, Handle bars, stuff that I bought at Busters in Waipahu. I used to ride black Skyways back then. Great Memories!

P,

THANKS FOR POSTING THAT! I REALLY APPRECIATED IT! Thats a better pic of that bike than I have.

Must have been when I first got the Jag bike. Still running the red white and blue Haro plate and that JT mouthguard that blocks your vision. Probably why I'm drifting so wide on the turn. Didn't see it coming. You look slick man! Who cares what youre wearing. You were living it! So, you had an addicks sprocket too? I bought into that one too. Looks like one of your first Gooses. Has the coaster brake tab on it. Also looks like you already started to tweak that goose fork. Very cool shot. One of the few where you aren't defying gravity!

Jeremy K.
BMX Joe,

No doubt we probably crossed paths. It was a journey of sorts for us on the East side to ride from Kaimuki and Palolo to Pearl City side. We used to stop at The Great Outdoors too. I remember staring in awe when I saw Miki and Moki Fernanez, and John Llacunas trophies displayed there. Remember that?

Oh' bradda, We all did da trek... Us kailua boyz rode over da pali holding on to da bus going threw da tunnels, we also hit up da track on base and Joe's quarter pipe plus even rode to Kaneohe to jump at haiku gardens. just like most around there we rode down tantaluas and a few of us took a few guard rail hits and some power slides over the drops there. it was fun doing some freestyle shows for the quick silver surf contest at sandy beach... boy those were the dayz! biggrin.gif

Greetings BMX JOE-

Thanks for your post. Did you ever ride on the Hickam grounds? There was a guy named Joe with real long hair I met there, he rode a red/orange-ish Mongoose. Joe, if thats you, I learned to do a bunnyhop 360 because thats the first time I'd ever seen one done in real time. You didn't have Skyways though, at that time anyways.

I wasn't sure where this other group of guys were from, but do the names James Cambe or McCormack ring a bell? McCormack rode a white redline frame with red stickers. There was a pretty big gravel jump near the airport, between Sand Island road and the airport, by that used car lot on Lagoon Drive, ocean-side of the freeway/viaduct. I believe there is a golf course or public park there now. I didn't ride with Cambe-guys, but gather they were from the west side and rode into town. I'd see these guys wherever riding out to flats, we'd hang there to jump a bit before moving on.

JK-

Glad you like that pic, its a good one -- you can really see the essence of that Jag! Those mouthguards were popular then, I could not even afford a jofa LOL. The helmet I am wearing in the race pic is borrowed. The Mongoose pictured was stolen a little later. By then I'd bought a used Redline fork to replace the Goose fork that I ended up bending/breaking. So my beloved Goose here got ripped off with the Redline fork and Redline V bars. Never got it back, boy was I devastated.

Nice Haro numberplate too, I've always wanted one. Just could never afford it. I once raced with a paperplate, can you believe that??

Digging back into the suitcase of memories, I know I have some pictures of Guy "Hanalei" and Moki Fernandez some place, I can even "see them".. just I've moved so many times, lived in the states, then moved back here, stuff get purged out slowly, but surely over time.

Maybe more Hawaiian old-schooler guys will find this site and post up some pics to represent the great state of Hawaii.

Oh yes, nice one!

This is triangle park in Kaimuki, the person who shot the photo is standing near the infamous tree on the water fountain side of the park. The little turnaround for cars is in the background. This look like old forks for sure, like thin ones, surely not ashtabula though eh? Are those redline bars?

Hot Dog, are those Vans shoes?? I wanted a pair sooo badly. Thanks for posting that, I have no pictures of triangle park jumps.

I am sure that James Cambe is the same guy. How many can there be? LOL

Look at these old black and white photos I got developed from those negatives. This is Mark Miyashiro again, launching off the middle jump. Look at that hair! LOL

MARK:

PAIEA:

There were so many guys there that day, check out the background! You sure you're not in the backdrop someplace, waiting to pounce?

Remember David Baker? He was there too, he'd ride with us wearing socks under his slippers. Its not like Baker was primping to attend the Oscars or something, but those socks were hidious.. combined with cheap slippers, that was a lavish costume turned bad, no matter what the fabric. Mother Nature even cowered LOL.. Sex appeal = zero..

These pictures were taken by my friend and neighbor Bruce. I recall he was taking a photography class and needed some notoriously talented bike riders <snickers> right.. he settled for us LOL

I have more to develop, Longs couldn't do the other negatives, the lady said the size was a problem. I need to take them to a specialty shop. I'll post them up when I gettum back.

Cheers my dirt brothers..

JK-

I have to tell you about Daniel Lee, affectionately known as "Danny"..

This is Danny at Pearl City flats:

DANNY:

At first glance, it appears D is doing a vertical lean or pancake, nothing to it yes? Well, one had to be there in person to see how close he could get his face to the front tire. So one day we were jumping someplace, I remember it was at a gravel pit behind St. Andrews Priory in Kaimuki, near Waialae and 6th avenue. There is a Zippys across the street, even today.

Anyhow, this is a long, long time ago.. so Mark tells Danny "hey next time you do that pancake, spit on your front tire".. LOL .. awww, ok.. so Danny goes for it, and guess what happens.

Note: Well, THIS should be hard to figure out, we better call in the idiot savants and Einstein wanna-bes to assist us in the "Pavlovian experiment (minus the bell)", which is about to go awry.

Ahem, Danny.. don't you know about wind and spatial scale? There is a concentrated wind belt composed of a jet stream and you're plowing right into it, sabe me? So the driving force of air flow combined with a spinning tire (doh!) meet in a mass of chaos and the forceful expulsion of salavatic (is that a word??) material is instantly reverse-driven.. straight back into his face! Whew, that was hard to figure out. But one might think good ole Danny learned something, no?

One must simply experience the power of suggestion as a detached observer. This power is so subtle, so immensely influential, I have to say when executed with panache, is a work of art. In this case, Danny is the sculpture and Mark is the artist. So Mark says, well that was funny. Let's try something else <said while Danny unmoisturizes his face> ... See that power line running over the top of the jump? Mark says "I bet you can do a kickout and touch the lines with your tires"... aww, Mark, we just saw what happened earlier, let's not endanger his life, ok? However, when you're a teen even doing something dispicable like dipping Grandma's dentures in the dog's water bowl seems funny, so hey what the heck. So Danny goes for it and I could only watch in subliminal agony. Danny hits the power line with his tire and the bike "changes direction" <ya think?> and lands on his forehead.. I'm serious! We had to take him to Cosmos house, then to the hospital for stitches. I can only verify, in a scientific manner, that "suggestion" is responsible for muddled thinking. Beware folks, no matter how simple the suggestion might be.

I love you Danny. Where is he today? He joined the Marines after I left Hawaii in 81-82 and when he came back from where ever he happened to be stationed, let's just say.. the military works because of the "way it works", bringing us back full circle to suggestability. He picked up the fine are of jive and was fully fluent in such a tongue, I was simply in awe. Can you say Social Engineering?

That is just one story, there are more... for next time. LOL

Affectionately..

Jeremy K.---Great Outdoors was the best hang out place and was always one of the stops. John and the guys were super cool there! I met Moki through my best friend at the time Buddy Alvarico. He had 3 pretty older sisters that were popular and new a bunch of people from every where, Penny, Jolina, Toni. of course mostly guys and Moki was one of them. Last time I went to Hawaii in 2001 they still had Moki's trophie and picture up at the bike shop, but was occupied by new owners. I wonder if its still there? The Great Outdoors put on some pretty cool freestyle shows and contests. I won highest bunny hop but got beaten my Moki in the longest distant jump. That was the last time I ever entered a freestyle contest.

Island rider--You guys were nuts riding through the Pali!!!! I rode from Waipahu to Waimanalo on my Nickle Chrome Mongoose and got lost in the Diamond Head area making my way. But on the trek back I was suppose to ride back threw the Pali, but I thought it would have been to dangerous riding into the tunnel. I never rode at Tantaluas but I watched my friend Peter Fernando ride is crazy down hill bike there at night. When my friend Lenerd Bacsa got his drivers license he used to drive us all around down town Waikiki, Tantaluas, Hotel Street! Ha ha haa! all kinds of places.

Perfectnut--- No that was not me. I never got to ride at Hickam, not that I can remember, but maybe I did at one time. Back then I was not able to pull 360's yet. I would get about 270's and that was it. The only guys I remember pulling 360's was Moki Fernandez and Guy Sierres. Guy was from Waipahu who ride a Cook Bros. back in the day and had super high bunnyhops. I do remember that gravel jump you are talking about and used to make a stop there when we were heading town side. So I'm pretty sure we crossed paths.

I don't have any pics of me and my friends riding back then because of the fire we had in 83. If any body remember a house on fire in Waipahu in Nov. of 83 that was my house. The only pics if any is the ones that my friends in Hawaii still have. If anybody has pics of The Great Outdoors freestyle show and contest I'm sure I would be in the background or something. Did anybody ride at the jumps near Leeward Community Collage, right by The Bus Stop? One of our rest stops was in Salt lake AM PM right near Ice Palace skating ring and Castle Park. Remember those places?
Jeremy K.
P,

That story on Danny is too funny! We had the whole gammut of guys riding didn't we. Very cool pics once again. Pearl City flats looks like it was going off at the time. I think I rode there only once. I remember Kevin Sano being there. I wish I spent more time there. It was such a jaunt to get from Kaimuki to Pearl City. We didn't really know the best way back then. I remember a bunch of us rode from Kaimuki to Red Hill then rode on the side of the Freeway to Aiea. We didn't know any other way at the time. Coming back home was even worse.

Easy guess for you huh on the triangles pic. You spent way too much time there. Remember we used to have to hop the curb right before the jump? I remember that tree too! And the water fountain. I hope you are able to pull more shots off those negatives.

Island Rider,

Sorry about the fire. As for The Great Outdoors. It's still owned by Faye Saiki. But, now it is called The Bike Shop Aiea. I been there about two weeks ago. The trophies and pics are all gone. The only memory of our days past is a NOS mitygoose up in the rafter. There was an 80's Diamond Back in for repairs while I was there though.

For all you BMX Hombre's from the Kaimuki/Palolo area heres a shot of the second jump at Triangles. I apologize for the poor quality.

BMX JOE- it was kind of easy going over the Pali, The hard part was time the bus as you had to catch up to it as it passed you and not get caught holding on the back end of it. as soon as you got threw the tunnels then it's all down hill to town from there. going to other direction was harder... way too long up hill ride. but going down hill to Kailua and taking the turn after the tunnels was fun. I remember being clocked about 50mph... and time the light by the old Pali road that goes to Morgans corner was fun! I think I ran the red maybe once of the 50 times we rode back home. I have some old pictures of my base friends like Steve Capps, Mike Lenkoski, Patrick Tamashiro(local rider). I will scan them in about a week.
Kevin Lau-Tell Walter Watanabe I said (what's up!) It been a long time since I had seen him!

I remember triangles!!! [I tried to curse] you had to time everything right! We also had an awesome jump behind Kalaheo high school gym. We took a sledge hammer to brake the curb up after Derek Kahuheokalani had dumped it. he was not the best of riders that had timing to hop a curb and hit the jump.

bmx joe
Island rider--- Never thought of using the bus for a tow, that was a good idea! I'm trying to remember that bike shop that was in Kailua. My dad bought me my first real bmx bike back then, Motor Mag Mongoose from that bike shop, but I can't remember the name of it. The other bike shop I can't remember was the one at Ala Mouana.

Jeremy K.--Maybe Moki took pic and trophie since it was his. I hope so!!!?? The last time I went to that bike shop they also had some old school bike in for some repairs, might have been Diamondback. Viper? I remember all pics coming out the same way back then, or us just bailing after we styled a table top or pancake. You would just get the bailing part. That old Kodak camera, and waiting for your pics to get developed. Then you would be pissed because the pics came out to blurry from moving the camera or you would get the beginning or the end of the jump. Kids are so lucky today with digital cameras. Any of you guys still ride or got back into riding bmx? I got back into riding about 6 1/2 years ago and still going strong! I ride mostly skateparks because there is a few close to my house, but I do dirt sometimes. How is the Hawaii scene now a days?
Jeremy K.
BMXjoe,

The bike shop in Ala Moana Center was Eki Cyclery. I think the one in Kailua was Kailua Bike Shop. But, I am not 100% sure. They had Kevin Murnin and the Cayetano brothers racing for them. Eki Cyclery has moved twice since then. They were located on Dillingham across from Honolulu Community College for a long time then they moved further down the street.

Yeah, it was very frustrating taking pics back then with those cheapie Kodak instamatics. Lots of pics we had were just parts of the riders like the hadlebars or a back wheel.....And the wait for the pics to be developed!

The BMX scene here is at a low. There is no race track right now. There is one being developed at Sand Island but last I heard there were some legal issues holding it up.....I'm hoping the track comes thru.....When my bike is done I'll represent the "old guys".

I'm still waiting for Jason Chang (who started this thread) to post. He is in the loop on whats going on with the track (pic below).

JK

island rider
Joe-there was Kailua lawnmower and bike shop that was near were Fast Eddie's and Kailua Toyota was, Then it was Kailua Bike Shop which was partly owned by Steve(which owned H.I.C.- Hawaiian Island Creations) They were first as one with Kailua Yamaha as soon as you past the bridge when you entered into Kailua town. then they moved over near Holiday Mart. That's when it became all Hawaiian Island Creations. Most of us Kailua boyz rode to Kaneohe base to ride the race track and jump the canal there by the beach, We also made a track on the side of the hill were the old bunkers were. I remember the jump at diamond head. nice one to catch good air.

I am sorry about the fire, that bites man -- pictures of any kind are priceless, among other things.

Maybe someone will post up pics from the freestyle contests.

You mention the Leeward Community College jumps and I remember some now! There is a large shopping center on the giant dirt lot fronting the "twin towers", those two 45-story square condos. On this lot, there was a couple of nice jumps. Might these be what you are talking about? It wasn't near the college per se, which was adjacent the freeway and another small bridge over a river. If the jump was right on/off a bus stop, then I "missed the boat err bus" on that one.

I definately remember the AM PM market there. Ice Palace still stands after all these years. I never raced on Castle Park grounds, but recall that track pretty well.

Tell you what, you had good guys to learn 360s from. I only saw that guy named Joe and learned by "cheating". In other words, I'd do a bunnyhop 180 and let my back wheel land first, using momentum from the spin to lean in and roll the other 180. I wasn't in the air for a full 360 bunnyhop. Is that how you did it?

Howdy BMX JOE-

Those old 70s/80s cameras were certainly cheesy, for sure.

I had one that looked like this:

Boy, the lens for focus was so small and narrow.. trying to get a jumping or racing picture was sketchy at best. You had to be the 6 Million Dollar Man (think Steve Austin) to get a bead on the subject. Those flash bulbs were the best ever. They looked like little blue ice cubes that snapped into the top of the "thing" we called a camera. The flash resembled a small volcanic explosion, those were the days. The pictures developed were hit/miss.

Although I don't ride BMX or Cruiser at all, I do ride a road bike quite regularly. I'd haven't even thought of BMX for years until I found this website. Hit me like a ton of bricks (for you Europeans out there we Hawaiians are still resisting the metric system).. then again, we resist anything that hints at progression.. just joking, thats a political poke LOL

The scene as I see it (or don't see it) is, invisible. Hence I don't see it, thus is not seen. Therefore, no scene is seen. Well, I wouldn't say NO scene, just rather weak for the moment. Maybe Jason's project at Sand Island will resuscitate BMX here, we'll see. That remains to be seen LOL.

If such a scene resurrects itself then I'll be there to take pictures and video movies for all riders.

Island Rider, thanks for the memories!

I clocked myself on my road bike at 54mph, so certainly those speeds are attainable.. thats nuts btw. I hope to enjoy your pics soon.

Do you know Gary Kaneshiro? They call him the friendly and affable "pumpkin".. he used to work at a place called Tokkurei Tei on Kapahulu. He rode with Walter's bunch way back when. I went to Tokkurei Tei last night for dinner and asked "Santa" if Gary was still working there. He said Gary has moved on to The Curry Shop in Ala Moana, sea side. This is near the food court, if I'm not mistaken. I plan to go check it out, hopefully Gary is there.

You're right about Triangles, I forgot about that. Charging the jump you had to bunnyhop the curb and that left you with about 15 feet or so to gather your wits and re-frame your attention to the jump. If there was loose dirt on the sidewalk, that made it worse. Nothing like slipping around right before the jump.

Nice cross-up at Triangles, I have to ask -- what is the name of that style jump? A "redline" or a "grossi" or what? The quality of the shot is not clear (neither is interpreting the New Testament), but that is a highly styled jump -- well done sir!

Now that I am digging deep into my BMX reserves, I've gone forth to see what Cannons Club, Triangle Park and St Andrews look like now. I did it yesterday on my road bike, hit up all 3 places. I'll take photos and post them up here, but I'm working like a dog now, hard to find time.

Here is a quick rundown:
Triangles is completely fenced off, you must enter the park from the "other side", meaning the side of the park where you charged the "curb-jump" (as opposed to your pic, jump). The city removed the old water fountain and put up a rectangular stone wall where the pipes and chains once were. There is a kid's jungle gym set mounted there too. And grass, of course.

Cannons Club is a wasteland. The third, leftmost jump of the bottom three is still recognizable as there is a kick, however the other two have been disentigrated. The mountain side jump is grassed off completely and there remains some broken concrete blocks among the ruins. Looks like maybe the state placed some blocks there to stop riders from jumping it. From the looks of it, cultivating weeds would be a tall order, but yet I saw spots of chump-grass breaking the surface. As for those famous warhead-looking missiles, someone either stole them or the Lion's Club confiscated them because they represent "violence". The small shacks seen in the following photo....
SHACK IN BACK:

is graffiti-laden and looks as though the rot-wood clubhouse girls took dictation on the splinters until mommy called them all in for dinner years ago. Like turkey tradition and xmas ornaments, such structures wax old and in this case, such gravestones emit a fordian itch. That is all.

As for St Andrews Priory, all I saw were dozens of kids dressed in school uniforms and the unexpected convergence was more than I could bear. I did spot the power line that Danny nicked with his tire, but did not pay a formalized visit to the parking lot itself. At this point, the bishop of the school may have asked my purpose of my encounter. I did not wish to embarass myself. Nothing more, the witness will step down **all rise**.
LOL..

Sweet Jeezuz, Tyau can fly though, huh?

Going on:
I attended a meeting at Faye Saiki's King St. Bike Shop on Saturday night (for Tradewinds team). Faye was absent, but Gary Gavin was there -- he remembers you working there decades ago. I had no idea the Great Outdoors was been re-named. While in Palolo Valley, I stopped over at Lance's house.. he was not home. Now that I recall Lance, I think his frame was a yellow Suzuki, not a Yamaha like I may have mentioned before. The neighbor's dog was causing a riot, snarling with fangs and foam at the mouth, spit flying in regular intervals -- picture a dog barking with the saliva engaged in slo-mo flight, ala WWF, it was ugly. I left since the dog was making so much noise. Stopped at Michael Akioka's house and he was there! Had not laid eyes on my best pal in over 8 years, probably. Still cooking tepanyaki and noodles at the restaurant near Aina Haina. He only remembers Michael Woo as the kid with a runny nose. Hey, we kicked up so much dust back then it's a wonder that all the neighbors didn't develop some sort of bronchial problem years down the line.

Well, must dash, I have more work to do and a wine-tasting to attend <yeah, I'm a dork>.

I'll have more pics from the negatives in another couple of days, beside the Tyau one. Enjoy that!

LOL. Another "Danny Story" next time I frequent this graceful little "internet cloud".

These shots are badass boys! I lived in Hawaii from '89 to '93 and was even a ABA BMX Hawaii #1 State Champion a few times. I also worked at the Bike Shop in Aeia. I was there after you guys, but I held down the race front just the same. These pictures are awesome. I knew Mokie and Mickey Fernandez, Rory Ingano and a few others you speak of when I lived there. They always told me all the stories of these places you guys are posting. thansk for posting and showing me the Hawaii race scene before I came a long. I do havve some good pix, but they are not from your time line.

P,

We called that a "redline" too. I think its one of those Hawaii things too though like the whole "Shimano" thing. My memory is foggy but......I vaguely remember us starting to call it that because we first saw it either on a BMXAction cover or inside. The rider was a factory Redline rider so we started to try it and for lack of any info on what it was called Rockne started to call it Redline. At least that how my hazed up brain tries to remember it.

You beat me to it......I was also planning to do the same thing and check out all the places we used to haunt. I am looking forward to see your interpretation of those places. I frequent the area where the Castle Park track was during work. I'll throw a pic of whats there now when you get yours posted. Unfortunately, you will only be seeing a pic of McDonalds, Starbucks and Jamba's.

I do remember working for Gary. Too bad Faye wasn't there. Remember Cy - that used to work at TBS back in the 70's. He used to take pics back then. Maybe he still has them. He took some pretty sick pics back then. Not the instamatic cra_ shoot we used to. I haven't seen him for about 15yrs though.

Glad to hear you are looking for old bmx friends and reliving the good times. I am trying to do the same!

Later,
JK

WHY YES........TYAU ROCKED IT!!!!!

Thumper,

Post them bro! I am eager to see Hawaii pics of any time line. Moki, Miki and Rory are all legendary Hawaiians and very cool guys. We may have crossed paths. I raced a little during that time in the cruiser class at Hickam. I remember Moki being there and Jason Chang. I could still get good gates but had a hard time getting around the track after that. I was riding a GT24. This was probably about 90 91ish. I have some pics (slides) I took from that time period. What are you wearing/riding? I might have pics of you.

Later,

Let's see here. I rode a Zeronine 24 when I first got there in '89. Pic from Hickam!

Then I had a Kastan 24. More Hickam

Then I had a GT 24, this shot was from the track on Maui.

Here's a shot from a race in Kauai.

Here's acouple shots from Hickam. Me in the lead!

One more of me jumping at Hickam!

Thumper,

Sweet pics! I'll have to take a look at the slides when I get home tomorrow morning. I wish they were prints that I had. I could just scan them and post them.

If you ever see someone riding around Aiea on a White Race Inc. 24 with white landing gear, Red Tuffs, and KOS cruiser bars. That was to mine too! Some one snaked it from me in front of THE BIKE SHOP one day. It was an old race bike of mine and I just rode it down to the shop to say hello. Next thing I know it's gone. Some one told me they saw a kid riding it, but I never saw it again.
Jeremy K.
I'll definately notice that bike if I see it. I work in Aiea!

the ganjas at the old hickam track! sick pics, shannon. here's a couple more for ya. castle park and hickam
