BC,

Those are awesome pics! Looks like you guys started kinda the same way I did. I had a red Schwinn Stingray. I spent all my allowance on that thing. I had a chrome springer fork on it with a small 16" wheel. Generator running a front light, bananna seat etcetcetc. Then I saw a BMX bike for the first time at Triangle park. That was the end of that for me. I set my Stingray up kinda the same way you guys have it in the pic. Same front fork, same sprocket, etc. I think I used my ape hanger bars for a while. We bent it wider using the storm drain cover. Wish I had a pic of that bike.

Then I moved on to a Mongoose Motomag which weighed a ton!

Jason,

Here's another picture from Cambells. It looks almost like the other picture I posted earlier
Jason Chang
I remember being so stoked being so close to Darren, it was like" he's right there, I am only a few feet behind" Then thinking how can I get just a hair faster. I knew I had a ways to go because he could beat me from an outside gate. With a one foot start too.

Thanks Jason for letting JK posts those pictures. Thanks JK for posting them. I forgot that Darrin had used that checkered board number plate. He was bored one day and made a checkered board pattern on a plate. Back then the checkered board pattern was the in thing. We had that on our Vans shoes and those short Quicksilver shorts everybody used to use.

I remember racing with that. That was the internal two speed hub(Shimano?).The gear ratio difference was too great for me.Didn't we try a two speed front chainwheel setup with a chain tensioner on the rear as well?
Jason Chang
Yep, the gears were about 10 teeth difference. So going from 34 to a 44. Was like driving a car and going from first gear to 3rd or 4th. It did help a little because the gate was flat and so was the straight away. Would not work on a slanted gate and a down hill. I think the front set up was a 38-44, which was better but still too far apart. 41-45 would be perfect, and I would use one if you could shift under power and your chain would not come off. Hey Sug I got a cruiser frame for you to use if you want. It is shorter than what you have, but not as short as what I am riding now. It will be much better than the Porker, I mean Torker.

Perfectnut I think this a picture of you

Hey Brian, great pics... hope you have more!

Yeah, thats me number 837 trailing behind and right on schedule LOL

I wonder if this was the same day photograph taken? I'd have a different helmet every race and I was too poor to buy one of my own..

See here in the pits:

That is Reid Kawamae next to me yanking the wheelie..

Here are a couple more shots of that red Mongoose candy-red frame, except with Tuff Wheels. I broke that frame right in the middle of the down tube, believe it or not, the pipe was separated LOL

Pearl City Flats:

Note: Can anyone recognize the guy in the background??

The drop jump:

Number 837, ark ark!

Drop jump, in the zone again:

Those were good times. On that bike I had center-pull brakes on and thought I was so rad.

I crack me up.

That is a cool pic man, look how far out front you are LOL

Rider way in the back looks like Raymond Motosue, based on the link to PhotoBucket provided from JK, there are some sequence shots in there.

I also saw Gary Kaneshiro, Pumkin, at the starting gate watching in one of the photographs.

This is great stuff man, thanks to everyone for sharing the retro-pics.. BMX with 50% more Awesomeness and 50% more "elderness" as well..

that's a cool set of wheels: sunshine hubs with araya 7c or ukai rims

KevLau, never ceases to amaze me with infinite knowledge of BMX components..

Let me ask, is that a SunTour freewheel cassette on the hub to the far right rim?

I think I remember they required a special quad-tool to remove. Some SunTour freewheels are allowed the easier changing of teeth by way of "screw-on" type teeth, such that you only needed to remove the teeth component (like a screw on bottle cap) and left the main piece connected to the hub.

I could also be hallucinating too..

You brute!!

Let me guess, you used a shiny little pen-knife to get the sticker residue off the frame and forks?

GO JK!

I watched Stu's race about ten times, what an inspiration at 50 years old. We have no excuse. The freewheel on the Cayetano bikes should be a Shimano due to the chrome outer part. I can't remember if the Suntour ones came in chrome. Both had a 4 key release, that needed a special tool. These worked better than the 2 key release, sometimes the edge of the 2 key would break or chip off and then it was a nitemare to take off the freewheel, cause the tool would slip. To see the most trick wheels so far check these out by Industry 9. You tighten the spokes at the hub, and the spokes are aluminum. But they cost about $900. A BMX version is being worked on.

Mr. Lau is correct it is a Shimano freewheel . I couldn't read the first two letters but it had MX30 . As you get older it gets harder to see.

What you got? I hope it's the Factory Black Lightning that I been waiting for!!Nah, is that the Nirve you were talking about?

I went to HK on Monday,it was really powdery and all the lips on the jump got more mellow.
Jason Chang
Yep thats the one, I have a short stem that I used on it too if you want. Don't worry, I don't care if you bend it, break it, or paint it green and pink. Just don't sell it. It could use some new paint anyway, was gonna powder coat it sometime, anybody know where to have this done? Hey Klaus where did you get your frames painted or powder coated?

I can get some information for a place that does powder/ceramic coatings in Cambell Industrial Park.---I also had alot of my fishing poles painted with custom candy automotive paints by a painter.
Jason Chang
Yeah but that guy started before the craze got going. So most of it was real cheap and the bike shop was happy to get rid of old stock. Just like I bought a few old Araya rims from faye, long after anyone wanted the old blue, red, gold. So I got brand new rims for $5 each. I only got 2 blues, cause thats all I wanted at the time, I should have bought them all. I know for years an old GJS frame sat at the King st store. Probably could have bought it for $40, don't know what happened to it. So many things we had are now big bucks. Glad I have some, but should have kept everything. I have some old SST race lace hubs, laced to those blue Araya's. I was offered $800 for them after I posted a pic here. Ben at Mcculy sold me 3 old frames for a $100. I thought I was smart when I resold them for $75 each. It was a Torker, DG, and a LRV. Duuh, could get $300-500 each now.

Sug, I am off for the next few days. Wanna slap that cruiser together? Maybe we can trick out your boys bike alittle too. I have more stuff in my garage than I can remember. Maybe you can help me fix my Golf cart, you could use it to drive to work, or have the coolest ride from your truck to the Baseball fieldha ha.

Yesterday was a good day at the HK track! Well.........except for another crash. sarcastic_hand.gif

I was hanging out at HK with the wifey and this road biker dude rolls up. It was none other than Perfectnut. It was great seeing you old friend! Been what ......How many years?

P was on this sick Titanium frame that looked super slick. He was training and on his way back to town so he stopped at the track. Riding from town to Nalo Contry and back is just too retarded for me. I told him they have counseling for that kind of thing. But, thats probably what is keeping him so young looking.

I hope you get a BMX bike P. I know you have that innate ability like Moki and will table within one week.

Here's a pic my wife Kiana took:
