Hey Perfectnut,

That picture with the guy in the green and white jersey. Is that Kerry? That is the only guy that I knew raced at Cambells with the Green and White jersey from Kauai. I think Kerry said something about the shop being his/yours uncles shop?
Refer to picture posted by Jason Chang earlier.

Hey there Brian-

I am not 100% sure on this, though I would say YES. Let me verify from the sources!

Here are a couple of pics from Pearl City flats to keep us occupied in between time..

Here is the HARO plate that I mentioned earlier. This was given to Derek when he had #3 plate in the State. I believe TOKU handed out 10 of these that day for the top ten riders. Darrin got one also . He had the #6 plate that year.

THAT IS VERY RAD and FOREVER EPIC!!

Jeremy K.
BC,

Thanks for takling the time to post those! That Haro top ten plate is too cool for words!

That plate trophy is awesome. So how did you guys get into racing? Who was first to start or did you all begin together? How did you all do at first, who caught on the quickest? Who made X first, give some Cayetano history.

Went up to RS and tried to clear that tree jump. If you been up there I'm sure you know which one. Unfortunatley I clipped it with my back tire just enough for me to endo into the landing ramp....... sarcastic_hand.gif . Thank God I wear a full face helmet. Because I dug a good divit into the ground with the front of my helmet. I saw stars and everything. My wife thinks I'm such a tool!

Sorry about the blurry pic but here it is about 1 second before impact. sarcastic_blum.gif

Wow you are pushing hard. Thats gonna be a huge advantage come race time, as the track will seem tame to you. Since the race track would be more about being precise and smooth rather than having big ALAs. Olympic BMX has been pushed back to Friday at 9:00 pm. this is due to rain in China. Funny I never saw one Chinese BMXer, but one is listed in the womens class. Maybe they will show the womens quarters since no main event for the men.

Well Jason,
To the best of my memory I think we registered all three of us at Kailua Bike Shop .We had two bikes that we used to race. Darrin had that Blue Mongoose with the Moto Mags and me and Derek rode that Red Mongoose pictured. We used masking tape to tape on the number plate that Derek used over my number plate when he raced. We also used that same Blue helmet that Derek and Darrin is wearing in a earlier posted picture. We were poor so we bought stuff and added it to the bikes slowly. Like the rims, forks, etc... Finally we had enough spare parts were Derek had his own bike. We got our own helmets etc....

Funny you ask about first time races.
The first time Darrin raced he had that Blue Mongoose with the Moto Mags. Man the looks we got and the laughs we got from some of the other racers. But Darrin got the last laugh that day. When the gate dropped he was at the front of the pack. The same guys that were laughing was getting there butt kicked by a unknown kid that was riding a bike that weighed a ton. Can't remember what he took that day but it was in the top three spot. Darrin raced I think one more time and placed in the top three again. When Steve the owner of Kailua Bike Shop approached my Dad or Darrin not sure who he approached and talked about sponsoring Darrin.

Derek raced for Stan the man of JT Racing until Steve asked if he wanted to ride for Kailua Bike Shop.

When Cambra left Kailua Bike Shop Steve asked me if I wanted to ride for Kailua Bike Shop.

Derek took the #3 plate and Darrin took the #6 plate for the 1980 season
The following season Derek took the #2 plate and Darrin took the #4 plate

We raced on Kauai several times but never raced on the mainland. We talked about going but it was just to costly to travel to the mainland.

After getting sponsored life got a little easier. If we needed parts we could go to the shop and work at the shop for parts. Some stuff we got free. Some stuff we got discounts, It was a give and take thing. Christmas time came around we spents some long hours there putting together bikes and also helping cutomers with bikes.

Eventually Darrin and Derek rode thruster bikes. They were pretty much identical except for the bootm brackets. One was the small bracket and the other the large bracket. Derek ran the small bottom bracket. Those bikes were super light. I think Darrins thruster cracked by the headset. Steve gave us Chrome mongoose for free and we converted the parts from the thruster to the goose. That is the only bike we still have from the days of racing.

Oh almost forgot my younger sister also raced for a while. She placed 2nd and 3rd places several times. If I can photo copy the results I will.

Well thats enough rambling gotta go.
kaneohe808

About 2 years ago my kid wanted to fix up his uncles bike so that he could ride it. Painted the bike and had to get new front and rear tires.New brake set up also. Darrin used to run the sling shot set up. Set up wasn't working properly and couldn't find parts to repair it.New grips and seat.Old hard plastic seat was cracked. I bet you haven't seen one of those ACS necks in a while. Just like the bars which is kinda wide.

Like a full grown bumblebee hell-bent on tenderizing death and distruction, charging through a garden spider's web of mental blockades really pushes the limits on trail and dirt!

I give you big props for exercising the upper most stratosphere of BMX tricks by trying to clear a giant tree branch by propelling yourself high with a bicycle, getting more nuts every day ..

two more trophies

COOL STUFF BRIAN !!!

HEY all you big-time trophy winners, I dumped all of mine except these two:

Keeping in mind that I hardly had any in my lifetime.. but the one on the left is from 1979 State Champs Novice 16 for 6th and my one 1st place in 1981, December. I have more medals from Road Racing than in BMX from days gone by..

Anyone remember the one State Championships that the organizers FORGOT to make/manufacture trophies for the 15 Novice class?? I got 3rd and was pretty stoked and all the other classes had these giant trophies all colorful and everything, we got nuthin except a pity party and the sweet sound of silence. I never won **** in BMX racing and I got robbed LOL

I am mentally scarred from that event, my neurons mis-fire and I have recurring issues milk cartons and wanted posters.

I WANT MY TROPHY!

5 dollars was a block of gold for me back then.. **grumbles about stupid long-lost trophy**

Hey Kev, I had to think what i was doing if you were on my 20. Then I remember that I raced my cruiser that night. BC, was it that strange to have Motomags back then at a race? What year was it. P, I cant belive they did not owe you a trophy later. I mean you paid to race just like everybody else. I know now a days, you will get your trophy even if it may be a bit later. I read on the net that the Olympic BMX is tonight, in prime time. I saw the results posted but still can't wait to watch it. I also sent an e mail to KHNL sports about how cool BMX is in the Olympics and that we don't have anything here. I hope he is interested and maybe does some kind of story that will help get a track going.

Hello everyone

I lived on Oahu for 4 years 80-84. My dad was in the navy stationed at Barbers Point in Ewa Beach. I lived in base housing in Iraqua Point (spelling). I went to Ilima Intermediate school, then on to Radford High School (parents were to afraid to send me to Campbell High). At Radford is where the BMX bug to a hold of me. My parents bought me a Blue Max bike for my birthday at the end of my freshman year after much pleading and begging and finally paying for half.
I started racing on a track that was built by us local kids in base housing in the wooded areas. Then i moved on to the track at Hickam AFB. That was a blast and i was hooked from that point on. I remember my dad wasn't to cool w/ it because he wanted me to focus more on high school sports (football, and baseball) when he told me i had to choose, i quickly handed in my ball glove, the very first race we went to my parents were there and by the end of the day my dad was totally impressed by how fast everyone got around the track. He soon made amends w/ me and said that i could do all three if i pleased.
I don't ever remember there being a track at the Cambell Ind. park, just the car race track and drag strip. It probably was gone when I was there. My dad used to my bros and i to the races all the time. I remember taking the city bus to the only bike shop i knew and the was the GreatOut doors shop. I would hang around as long as i could and then on to the Pearl City Mall. Being that Radford HS was just up the hill from Castle Park, I don't remember there being a track there to. Before my time there probably. I do remember when we had two a days at football practice (before school started) inbetween practices me and a couple other guys would ride in the water chutes that ran next to the Interstate just above Pearl Habor. Lots of fun then and many hard falls and scraped up knees and elbows.
I raced many times at Hickam and there was one other place, but i can't recall the name of it. I know my dad used to race his rc cars there also. Kinda of in the downtown area/habour area. The only thing that really sucked was when my bike was stolen in my neighborhood, 2 weeks before the moving company was to come and pack our stuff up before we left to go back to the main land. I was bummed to say the least. That pretty much ended my BMX days. Shortly after that I moved to Maryland and they didn't race anywhere near that place that my parents would drive me to.
Thanks for posting this bit of nestalga(spelling). I have some pictures that I will post of the first race I did at Hickam and I will put those on here tomorrow.

Well Jason,
I think it was like 1977 or 1978 . I guess it was strange to race with Moto Mags back then. I guess because it weighed a ton. All I knew is that is all we could afford at the time. Darrin wanted to race and we made do with what we had at the time and that we got some weird looks and guys laughing
until they got smoked. Then those guys weren't laughing. We actually kept those rims around even after we got lighter rims. We used those rims to help train . When you changed rims the bike seemed
easier to ride due to the weight change.Or maybe it was just all in my mind.

NavyBrat,

Welcome to the site! Looking forward to seeing your pics. I think the track you are describing was when we raced at Keehi Lagoon. Kinda close to the airport area. Bummer about your bike being ripped off. I had my bike stolen too when I was a kid. I was lucky enough to get the frame back but all my parts were long gone. Pretty traumatic when youre a kid and your bike is your life. I totally can relate to what you went thru.

Navybrat, if it was 1983-84 then the other track was Keehi lagoon with the wooden jumps. If it was 1986 then it was Hawaii Kai, a regular dirt track. Wow that is killer BC. I never got to try a dirt bike till I was an adult. I think it was more fun than BMX. If I would have tried dirt bike as a kid I don't think I would have done BMX. One good thing is that for one good dirt bike you can get about 4-5 BMX bikes.

When was Wahiawa YMCA? I don't remember Hawaii Kai? Did I start drinking and quit by then? Gosh, I gotta lay off da booze, memory is shot.
Jason Chang
Hey Slavey, where ya been? If I remember right you stopped about half way through the Keehi Lagoon season, and Hickam was brand new. Hawaii Kai was maybe a year and a half later. I think Wahiawa was 1982, and only lasted maybe a year. It was only a 4 man gate, so we were ahead of our time as much later the 4X in MTB became the norm. Only one good jump on the whole track, which is one more than Keehi Lagoon. I think me and Spanky was the only two older Mililanians left racing when Hawaii Kai started. I think Kev and Andy were 100% freestyle, not sure on Sug and Jesse. I think Big Lance dropped out during Keehi too.

You know, Andy seemed so normal, just one of the fellas. But when let loose on a bike, he would do what I would only talk about. Or dream about. Then when him and klaus spent some time in the mainland, they came home and was working on tricks beyond what I could think of. Good thing I stuck to racing. They were doing stuff faster than I could even think of them. I would tell them, "what if you did this?" And they would say yeah we were working on that.

Never brought up Miki, didn't know what to quite talk about as it seems both of them have had a rough go through some years. That was Moki's second time riding HK, and look how much he has gotten back. He was very excited to be riding again. Moki has turned everything around and is doing really well again.

Thats great for him!!! Keep it up Moki! Nice pic of him laying it flat! I remember seeing them in real life back in 1983-1984 at Waipahu High School. There was a Jump right by the Gym where he also did 360's and 180's. Can he still manual/wheelie for days? First guy I'd ever see did that wheelie without pedeling, now called manuals. Was on chrome 83/84 SuperGoose.

Off subject but anyone interested in buying a truck? Selling my 03 Dodge Dakota quad cab. V6, auto trans, tint, Pioneer CD, Flowmaster exhaust, CGS air intake, Superchips tuner. The racer in me wanted more speed so I bought a 08 Dakota with a V8. Now I have two truck payments, and gas is killin me. But the price to pay for going fast. $9000. Also a few BMX items, Nirve 20 inch complete except cranks, and a almost new Nirve cruiser frame with 22 inch top tube good for someone 5 foot 10 or more. Thats why it didn't work for me, I am only 5 foot 8. I used to ride for Nirve so everything is their top of the line.
