Aaaaa haaaa!!! Let me know if I can be of help on the clips, I went through that nightmare but once you get past the first few stages of learning it gets much better. Gates were the hardest, not so much getting going but just getting set and ballanced. Never knowing if it has locked in till you leave the gate. Sometimes you don't hear the click so you just hope, and then you come out the gate and your feet fly off. Nothing like watching everyone pull away from you as you fumble to get clipped back in. I have a lot of stuff you should check out to make shopping for them easier. You can even try some of mine to see what you like first.

I am running all Shimano. I have heard a lot of good things about Time, but have not tried them myself. The shoes are not as important as you can attach any clip to any shoe. Just the clip and the pedals have to match. I have tried 3 different Shimano pedals but like the PD-M647, which is the one with the black plastic/nylon platform. It has a bigger opening for the clip so it is easier to get into, with the smaller opening you have to aim just right to get in. For shoes I have the ones that look like road shoes. I do have the one that looks like a regular shoe too, and it is way more comfortable. but it also is a lot more flexy in the sole. To me a stiffer shoe means less power loss and you can feel the clip better as far as clipping in. With the softer shoe you don't feel as much under the shoe so to me it is harder to feel the position of the clip to get it locked in. I have extra shoes and pedals if you want to just try out some different ones. My shoe size is 8 1/2. I have a brand new pair that was too big for me in size 10, if anyone wants to buy it from me. It is the one that looks like a regular shoe.

Oh yeah you can see the shoe at the Shimano website, it is the SH-MP66 size 10. Mine are light grey, the newer ones is black. Many pros use this shoe. Be sure to check out the DXR stuff too.

Changstar,
Thanks for the insight. I'll probably go with Time Z's. Russel said the same thing about using the stiffer road looking shoe. But, being the way I am I'll probably go with the one that looks like a regular shoe. The other's just look too funky for me. I don't mind the shoe being flexy right now. I'm sure if we start racing again I'll change my opinion.
How's jumping clipped in? That worries me and being on the gate.

Klaus, that pic is awesome, thanks for that, I will add that to my collection. I know you are comfortable in clips, what do you think about it for BMX?
JK, remember first doing two pedal start? How you would be nervous trying to keep your balance and getting everything set just right. Well it is a lot like learning it all over again, except when you lose your balance you can't just put your foot down, more likely cause a domino effect and fall over sideways. But if the gate is steep then it is easier to balance so that makes things easier. As for jumping, as long as you get pretty dialed in on flats first then you should be OK. You don't want to be learning to jump and learning to be clipped in at the same time. I made sure to get a lot of track time on flats before doing it on clips. Once you are comfortable jumping you shouldn't feel any difference. Actually it feels more secure because you know your feet will stay in place and not move in the air or on the landing. There will be a funny slippery feeling at first because of the float, you will be able to twist your foot about an inch before it will clip out. So it feels like you foot is doing a wiggle till you get used to it. especialy when everything is new and clean, metal to metal will slide on each other very easy. It gets better when a little dirt gets in there. I know guys that put some dirt on brand new pedals before riding them, even Shimano says to put some dirt in there, just not near the springs. I heard Time has more float so there will be more of that wiggly feeling on those. Where you put the clip under your shoe will also affect how things feel, with that you just gotta experiment to see what you like. Everybody falls while learning. The best is the 5 mile per hour cruising and then just fall over, total embarasing. but it happends to everyone.

Aug 14 2008, 01:49 AM
You by any chance a size 10? Got some really nice shoes brand new in a box, and they also are the best shoe for being on flats too. Just don't take out the section for the clip and leave it solid.

Changstar,
My Vans are size 10. PM me the price.
Yeah, I was thinking about the whole gate thing. I don't mind falling I just hate to fall on someone else. I need to get more comfortable jumping. I went up to Summit yesterday and was hitting the gap jump. Whole different feeling than the tabletop jumps at HK. That new downhill jump at Summit is just Retarded. I gotta conquer that one soon. We need to get going and build at the old track near the driving range. I love HK but it's just too far. And Summit is harsh on a BMX. When you guys are ready to dig let me know. I might stop by there today and scope it out.
By the way...............Kevlau.......AWESOME PIC!

That DB jersey still looks new. Why did you start to wear that jersey? You were still on a Goose, and I don't remember you ever riding a DB. I know you rode a Patterson, and a Redline Pro line, not sure when or in which order. I remember when you first showed up at Madusa's with the GT pro handlebars, that was a major eye opener. Such a big improvement over my Microline bars. I think I got Cook bros pro bars after. I wish I had kept my old jersey's, but I don't think I ever threw them away so I don't know what happend to them. I only have one old jersey, I will post a pic soon, I think most of you will be surprised. other than that special one, I only have my Blue Max jersey's and everything after it. Wait, is that Patterson jersey my old one? ha ha, would be funny if it is, I am gald it is in the hands of someone who appreciates it.

I got a good story about trophies. Back about 1981 we were racing about once a month, so if you had 30 trophies that was good. I went on a family vacation to Cali and talked the group to go out to the famous Orange Y. Well my cousin and I were thinking we were pretty good local riders and had a lot of trophies. I had maybe 30 and my cousin had 20. With all kids that race, a way of checking out your status is to ask how many trophies you have. So we are taliking to a 10X and he asked how many we had, and we proudly told him. He just looked at us funny and then told us he had like 700. We were stunned silent. This was a hot local Cali racer and can you imagine what the factory dudes must have had. 100 trophies would have been a lifetime of being on top to us. 700 was beyond anything we could understand. And to him it was no big deal. There was a lot of things that opened our eyes to the world of BMX that few hours, like seeing a elctronic gate, and having 75 moto's for a Wed night race. every bike you could think of was being raced, and a few factory riders were out at practice. Got to see Denny Davidow win the pro class. I still remember how I had never seen anybody ride a bike that fast before. The track was smooth fast had a lot of jumps and cool berms. It was hard to go back and race at Cambells with the flat turns and minimal jumps. It was like getting to see the future then having to go back. I could only dream that someday we would have a track like that.

Changstar,
700 trophies! My mom hated dusting the few I had! But, this is a prime example of why I think the Local Boys held their own. Mainland guys could race weekly or several times a week. Look at the experience and practice that gave the mainland guys. We raced once a month twice on a good month. Yet, Hawaii guys like you, Phillipart, Rockne, Buddy, Rory, Moki, Sano, Kono, Roland, Miki, Llacuna,Malvert, Barry Ikeda........etc. etc. etc. could beat alot of Factory riders. Not just on our track but on a mainland track. In my book that is BAD!
I have seen Rory pass and beat Stu. Rockne beat Lee Medlin, Mike Poulson and Eddy King to name a few. Not just by a little either. Litterally running away from them. That pic of Rockne in BMXA? In the same article there is a pic of Lee Medlin. In that very heat Rockne was about 3 bike lengths in front of Medlin. Rockne is still kinda salty about that pic.
Not to mention Iha and the Trophy dash. He was what 13 I think? Too bad we were a plane trip away.

Jeremy,
Well the trophy on the left was given out in 1983. I would have to say Keehi Lagoon , Association would be HBMX
The other trophy would be 1984, I guess at Hickam , Association HBMX

As for trophys we dumped a bunch of them. We still have the Koa bowls and a couple of the bigger ones.
Do you remember back in 1980 they gave out trophies to the top ten riders. The trophy was a HARO plate with the number that you placed for that year. Well that is the only HARO plates we have at the house now. Derek had the #3 plate and Darrin had the #6 plate. Will take photo of plates and trophies and post when I have time to take pictures of them.

I do remember some kind of state series that gave really big trophies to the top ten in the series, forgot what it was called, but I think a younger Maui rider got the overall first and like a 5 foot trophy. And you had to race in certain races on each island.

Hawaii always bred fast guys, I think it took a lot more power to go fast at Cambells. I always wondered how those guys would have done if they had spent more time on the mainland, instead of just going to do one weekend of racing. For me it took a while of just staying up there and adapting. Tracks and riders were different, electronic gate, all the people. Once you got used to it and could relax and ride your own race then I did OK. Small things like tire pressure made a big difference on those mainland tracks. A lot was mental, just cause you are so nervous. Full gates every time made it feel so much tighter. like there was no room to really open up to full speed, I always felt like I could go faster but people in the way, or just when you start to get up to speed you gotta stop pedaling for a jump, then a turn then something else. Once you got to where you were going full speed then we were as fast as anyone.

HEY J!
I need lucky purple posting fairy dust because I kept getting errors. So I will answer in this post.
I saw all the pictures in your album that JK posted -- though he said it was only part of album one. Number 130 in the COS jersey is Jeff Kang. I am in the pictures too, number 158 with the paper plate in last place LOL. Looks like those pics are from 1981 or 1982. I was prepping for college then and pretty much raced only for the motions. Jeff was up and coming rider and had built some nice skills by then. I dropped off the scene after 1982 when I left for Arizona. I actually heard of you too, but didn't know there was a big Mililani BMX following. I look forward to more pics and tales from past/present on Vintage! You have any idea where Jeff Kang is?
Thanks to everyone for their pics and stories + the trophies look too.
The name COS comes from Kenneth "Cosmo" Gorman, who was sponsoring us back then. I have a few pics of me and some of the team guys in the COS jersey, not many however.
