What's up Roland,

It's nice to see you and your brother back in the saddle again. I really enjoy seeing the pics Jeremy posts about the bunch of guys riding again.

If you think back in the days there were a lot of family siblings racing at Cambells.
You and your brother
Me and my brothers
Evan and Myles Yonamine
Lex and Lance Tam Ho
Moki and Miki Fernandez
The Ikedas just to name a few.

Derek is living in Washington and works as a Police Officer for the dept. of defense. As for Darrin he was just at the wrong place and wrong time back in 1993. But thanks for the thoughts. We got rid of the Impala and yes I am still a Police Officer working out of Kaneohe Station. Hopefully I can retire in five years.

Tell Rock he looks good from the last time I saw him at his house many years ago.

We still got Darrins Mongoose with the 80/60 gauge spokes I think Shimano Sealed Hubs and the Dura Ace cranks.I think it has a Tuff Neck on it with Redline V Bars not sure Haven't looked at it for a couple years. Its in the back Tool shed collecting dust. oh and that trusty hard plastic seat.

Maybe one day I will come out. But for now I am content with just posting stuff here .

Keep posting those pics . I know I will.

Whats up BC,
Never knew u had all those pics. YOu was holding out on me ah. Maybe when we retire in 5 years we can ride and make a 50 and over 200 plus class...Maybe then i'll have a chance. ha ha ha..
Stay safe and keep posting. I'm still looking for some of our Waipahu Bicycle stuff! Roger Dodger/D-3

50 and over 200plus class! Count me in! biggrin.gif

808-- I got a friend that I grew up riding with that is on the police force (Robert Daclison). The last time I saw him was only for a short visit in 2001 and since then I only talked with him a few times since then. Said he missed the old of riding a bmx bike. May be you guys can get together and get each other motivated to ride again with the other guys!

Waipahu Bicycles was this and Busters the same bike shop? I can't remember. But I remember pics at Busters in the glass show case of races and teams. If I remember right my friends Lance and his brother Reid Kunishige was sponsered by Waipahu Bicycles before quiting sometime around the early 80's.

Yup,
Robert DAC attack is my bud. He occasionally works out with me at the PC Station. He went to Waipahu but a few years younger. I believe he works at the Kaneohe or kailua Station. Actually, i didn't know he rode. It must have been after I stopped in 1980. I will bring it up next time I see u'm. Lance KUNISHIGE was sponsored by Waipahu Bike(Buster's), we used to call him "bubble" but I guess after all these years, you can call me the "big bubble" ha ha ha... Take it EZ and don't speed. Thats Cool! I used to hang out with attack back in elementary to High school. I was real close to him and his family. He was like my brother and his family always made me feel like I was a part of there family. Real nice people and I used to always sleep over at there house when I can. Our era was after yours we rode from 80 to 84. He rode RedLine 500 I think and still has it the last time I talked with him, but needed some restore. I bet when you ask him he will have some storys to tell you! Tell him you talked to Joseph from California on Vintagebmx.com. I tried to keep in touch with him via email but he does not use the computer that much at home so I have to call time to time. As for Lance I known him the same time and have not seen or talked with him since I left for California in 1984. This guy used to always say Whooop! real load when he rode bikes. I guess he like Da sound of the volkswagons back then! I guess now he has a BIG Whoop! 1st gear Whooop 2nd gear Whoooop 3rd gear WHOOOOOP! 4th gear! No need fo speed bra! just cruise!!!

I don't care what size Roland is now, you should have seen him at HK. I felt bad that I wasn't riding harder. I would say both Tangs and JK made me step up and push, well till I saw Roland eat it, then reality set in that we may feel pain more now. Brian, so who placed best between you and your brothers that day? I remember you being one of the last Kailua bike shop guys still racing after all the others had stopped.

Changstar

Jason,

Don't recall who finished first. But if I had to bet I would say Darrin placed in front of me and Derek. Darrin dropped out first. He discovered girls which was more important. Then me and then Derek. I kept going to the races due to Derek was still racing. I actually began to hold the gate to start the races. Derek kept riding until he left for the mainland about 1997.

Jeremy,

I have to say that is the best picture you have posted yet. That is why I love this site. You never know what will pop up. I guess only the Rock can confirm if thats him digging for gold.

Boy don't you wish you had those frames and forks in your garage. Remember those Black handle bars on the bottom of the picture. I think every one had em at one time or another on there bike.

Jeremy K.
I showed it to him a few days ago. He already confirmed it. biggrin.gif laugh.gif biggrin.gif I remember those bars too. I had them on my Motomag Mongoose. Learning to bunny hop curbs on that bike was so frustrating. The bike weighed a ton to me back then. Was pretty cool when new "cutting edge" parts started to come out. Like aluminum bars, chromoly stuff, three piece cranks etc. I remember just staring at the parts thru the glass display cases at TBS, EKI and McCully. It was an awesome time! Like we were watching BMX unfold before our eyes.

Got this clipping I think from from that Hawaii motorsports paper that was published and you could find it Rons Performance or the motorcycle shops.

Any way it shows that there were races back in the day out of the Waianae Coast. It was a total different organization from the one at Cambells. Racing in that sand was a trip.

JT also gave me some info on the pic:

"FYI, the pix at Eki's...the two kids next to Rockne are Rick and Jay
Takeshita. Rick is wearing a Safari Cycle Accessories T-shirt with the
MXer on it. The two adults might be Derrick & Katie Takeshita."

BC,

Thanks for posting that. Too bad we don't have much pics of those races. Not too much people raced there. I think I raced there 3 times. Now that I think back I should have ran something like 39/16 gearing to get thru the sand.........Yeeha. It was pretty cool racing so close to the beach. I always think about those races when we pass that area during brush fire season.

No. 567 in the pic of the trophy dash is Eric Kono on a Schwinn Sting.

jk
kaneohe808
Jeremy,

I thought that was Kono. It looked like him his posture and Derek raced against a lot back in the day.

I think we raced that Waianae track maybe 2 times. I think registration back then was like five bucks. I think that was the same amount that HBMX had also charged to register to race. I think we only got maybe 3 pictures from that racing track.

79 South Pacific Nationals. Pretty sure this is the Open Main. Maybe Rockne or Rory can confirm.

I remember Rockne blowing the start. We tried one pedal starts fro the first time that day. If I remember correctly Rockne lost his balance on the gate.

No 8 Rockne Tang
No 20 Donny Atherton
no 756 ?
No 6 ?
No 1 Moki Fernandez

Hey Mr. Kaneohe808-

QUOTE
The guy was Stan I can't remember his last name .He was the guy that took about 15-20 kids to races and all kinds of places for them to ride. If you notice in the pics guys racing with JT Racing jerseys .It was because of him.He would sponsor kids just like the shops did. Stan was a man with a big heart . My brother raced for him for a while before one of the shops picked him up. Don't know what happend to him. I'm sure if you ask Faye from the bike shop she could tell you. The Bike Shop had there own silver van with Team Mogoose painted on the side with the mongoose picture. The Great Outdoors guys would all hang out by the van and blast the music in between motos

You're right, JK had answered this one earlier in this here giant thread. I do recall meeting Stan on one occasion way back at some huge dirt pit, looked like the inside of a massive grapefruit. I know Faye at the Bike Shop and will ask her next time I drop in over there.

I had been out of the loop for a couple of weeks, having gone to Lake Tahoe for a nice high-altitude vacation with my g/f and her family.

Here is a couple of Lake Tahoe pics:

Paul, my psuedo-brother-in-law and I firing up some serious BBQ ribs!
- Location: The Ridge at 7600ft altitude

Here I am hiking way up towards the Northbowl Lift at 10,000ft, past 100Dollar Saddle and Stagecoach Lookout.

You have been posting up some great old-school pictures and BMX race results, I thank you for that. Much history is being resurrected in this Vintage palace:)

You remembered my uncle and cousin Kerry Kamaunu from the Kauai Championships! The second day was wet and rainy with your pic confirming the fact that we raced with no Starting Gate. That was a rad couple of days for sure.

Brian C, I have a picture for you man!

Here it is, shot at Campbell Industrial Park:

Notice my two feet are OFF the pedals, what a dork I was in this moment! Shortly, you are going to blow past me while I fumble in complete and utter confusion...

I think the fast guy besides Cambra in this heat was Toby Tsukamoto (sp?), he rode a red Mongoose.

i got some old pics but my new computer doesnt accept my older scanner. might have to give k. lau or someone to post. i used to ride a thruster regular, x long, and tri power. russell tetsutani is a plumber, walter w. works at heco, jeff kang only see him once in a blue moon, garry pumpkin is at curry house mccully. i read you guys go out to hawaii kai to ride, i live right by the park, i think k. lau knows where.

Hope to see your pics from the days of Daniel and his pit of lions LOL

Be sure to tell the boys about this site, especially Jeff Kang. He would be completely blown away by some of the old pics I raised from the dead of him jumping at Cannons Club. That guy would try any kind of mental-looking tabletop no matter the consequences!

He was so funny, we would ride and he'd say "Paiea, you're my idol!". Puhleeze. One time we were riding from the bike shop on King St near the McCully Bike and Library, he bunny-hopped the wall by the front door and launched off the other side of the wall over the sidewalk into the side street. That was very rad, I thought "whoa, this guy's skills has exploded into the stratosphere".. He also did the 100 plus mile Century Ride with us and finished over an hour ahead of the rest, including me. He was a rad BMXer, mos def.

Last I saw the Great Pumkin was at Tokurrei Tei on Kapahulu one night, was nice chatting up before dinner. I'll have to visit the Curry spot for sure now.

Barry, did you ride the Century with a modified BMX bike with 3 gears or something? This was like in the mid-90s?

Maybe I'll see ya out on the HK track, though I'm yet to buy another BMX bike...

Here's one that Perfectnut can appreciate. Rockne getting down at my favorite riding spot. Triangles in Palolo Valley. 1978.

jk

That is a picture just marinating in deep RADNESS. I love the Triangle Park, it was the first real place I learned to jump on dirt. Back when this shot of Rock was taken, I was not too much a good jumper yet. I'd ride down to like Kahala Elementary and P-3 (Peitre??) Park to jump and basically build a relationship with the bike. On some of the streets, there were some good curbs to launch off of, the ones with grass/dirt "kicks" growing right off the top of the curbs near driveways. The best!

I can remember being at Triangles once and this small white kid riding a girls bike was flying over trash cans like nobody's buisness! Can anyone place this kid?

Keep up the pics ya'all, I'm digging it like a disco dancer gyrating to "Play that Funky Music" in the 70s..

HO HO HO!!

Great pic, that is just too cool LOL..

Hey man, I rode out to HK Track again this past Sunday and pulled in about 4pm-ish-ness. Spotted the legendary Changstar grooming the track with a couple of other guys. Finally got to shake the paw, what an honor!

Unlike myself, he still looks in pure unadulterated BMX shape.. wish I got to see you too JK, however I cannot get too "cold" when riding road, I wanted to burn off some of the few pounds I accumulated while vacationing in Tahoe. I would start drinking at like 9am LOL.. some of the meals we prepared were healthy indeed, however constantly eating is not too good for the waistline..

Thankfully, we went hiking and rented some mountain bikes for exercise.. I went running on the last day too.. the air is pristine and the lake/water is so glacial.. just beautiful..

Here is the bike I was able to score for rental:

That pic was taken out near a trail called Camp Richardson. In the second shot, the kid behind me is Patrick, my pseudo-niece... great boy. The only bad part was, no place to jump could be found.

We went rafting too, here is a pic of the Truckee River:

That is my g/f and her mom in front of me there. The valley we were going down was just gorgeous. If anyone can, be sure to visit Lake Tahoe someday. There are bike rentals all over for both mountain and road. Trails everywhere. I saw a couple of BMXers riding, but just briefly.. mostly road and mountain bikes.

The above shot is a look from the platform atop Heavenly's Gondola ride, right before the summit. Altitude there is 9100ft. The bottom part where the lake is along with the hotel-casinos and lower forests sit at 6300ft as it is. The air is so fresh, one must experience it for sure!

Way in the back of the pic, left side is Emerald Bay.

In any case, nice place to visit and great place to ride and hike the mountains. Of course, in winter the place is just filled with ski-bunnies..

Cheers..

P,

Glad to see you back old friend. Looks like you had a great trip. Thanks for posting the pics of your vacation. It's great to see everyone in their "adult" lives. Yup, Jeff Chang........what can I say.....I think his brain is formed differently than ours. He was missing that part that makes you think....maybe I shouldn't do this because a) It defys too many laws of physics and cool.gif it could really hurt me if I don't pull this off. I remember that evil smile he would have before he would do something insane. Then come back to where eeryone was hanging out with that little school boy smirk. laugh.gif

BC,

Those clippings are great! I spent a while just looking at the results and trying to remember things about the South Pacs. Mostly I remember Rockne beating Eddy King. I remember all the time spent training for that. All the hours we practiced taking turns. Learning to pass on turns. Being prepared for someone elbowing you on a turn paid off for Rock that day. I think alot of us that weren't as fast as Rockne felt good that day. Losing to him wasn't as bad since we realized he is as fast or faster as the top Factory guys. At least thats how I rationalized it when I was a kid. I also remember Denny Davidow. I never seen anyone that fast before and I loved his riding style and copied it after that.

I also see a few names in the clippings that may be firemen today. Like Cade Oyadamori. I'll have to go ask.

Roland where's Rock. Been promising to post for how long now. We all know he is not the shy type!

Changstar,

There was no rivalry between McCully and Waipahu at all. And as far as I can tell no rivalry between TGO and TBS. I raced for Cobra for a couple of races. I used to stop there on the way home when I was riding home from town to Red Hill. He gave me a few jerseys and stuff but nothing to talk about. For the most part everyone was pretty cool with each other. I rode for McCully but mostly hung with TBS guys, Rockne, Roland, Buddy and Phillipart.

So, when are you riding HK next. I played around on my bike today at work. I'm hoping to ride this weekend.

Lopaka, John went on to be very good, he is a 3 time holder of the #1 plate, I think 2 in 20 inch and one in cruiser. He went to a few nationals and made a few mains. Even got sponsored for frames and uniforms. John was very strong, like a bull, and a fearless jumper. His only weakness was his gate, but once he got movin not much could stop him. I ran the Wheeler track from 99-04, so I know most of the kids. Did you guys know that Russell Hirata did a season out there and did well. Klau alsi did some time up there. I wish I had done more. Trying to run everything and race was very hard. When I did race I would have my first moto as my first time on the track that day. Just jump on the gate cold and try to win. I did OK, but boy let me tell you, when I decided to race in clips, it was all or nothing, and mostly nothing. Todays kids start early and are comfortable in clips, for me to adjust to a big change like that after over 25 years on flat pedals was tough. But there is no question thats clips are waaay faster.

Hey Mr. Kaneohe808-

How's that old McCully Bike Shop jersey I am wearing.

Roger Dodger,

John Boyle hurt his knee and had surgery on it. He had surgery on his knee 2 or 3 times already.
It's a shame kid was talented. He had several sponsors Smith googles , Free Agent, I think Fox also His last sponsor was UFO . They were paying for him to go to the nationals several times a year. He had established himself as a top rider and was known by the mainland racers as the JOKER . He was supposed to have moved to the mainland about a year ago . But the knee injury changed everything. John and my kids used to ride and race Motocross at Kahuku. He looked good the last time I saw him which was about 6 months ago. I think he gave up riding and is just working for his uncle now.

I also heard John was working loading planes(Hawaiian??)

Here is a picture of Darrin at a place they called Jump Track. Notice those Moto Mag Wheels and the one piece steel cranks. The Black front forks. Just like a bike you would buy straight off the floor except for the neck and bars. Remember those Blue alloy bars .

Kev,

I can't even imagine how much that jersey would go for on EBay. That is a thing of beauty. I ran Tuffs for a while too. I had a blue set and Rockne had a Yellow set. We had really harsh landings at Triangles and our Araya 7B's took a punishment. Rockne's 7b's were so beaten up that his bike would hop up and down at speed. There was even a crack at the welded seam.

I remember Alex Adams always running Tuff Wheels. But I couldnt pull them around a track like Alex could. Felt too heavy to me. Not as bad as Motomags though like the one's Darrin is using in the last shot though. Cool shot by the way BC.

Be cool to slap a goose together with Motomags and get some jumping pics at HK. sun_bespectacled.gif

Here's one of the EKI pics. I'm not sure who the riders are. Maybe Rory can help.
