whats up k. lau... if only someone thought of burmys back then. short quiksilvers and corduroy shorts was the ticket. one day i gotta check out your new bikes, might think of getting one.

What up Barry!! Dave Uemura here. That #4 plate could have been a #1 if you did not retire. I remember looking at the points standing a few months after I quit racing (a little after you quit) and seeing that you were #1 mid-way through the season and I was #2. Too bad we both quit, we could have been #1 and #2. I couldn't handle the late nights with Klaus, Chang, and Sugi and then coming to the race track the next day.

Say "wassup" to Walter and Russell for me. Russell and I are actually related, not sure how though.

Hey Barry, when you come to ride, just so we recognize you make sure to wear the checkerboard shoes with matching pads, shades and well no need for the short shorts. I think the whole town gang should make a comeback. You guys were ahead of your time skill wise, but our track were all horsepower tracks. You guys would have ruled on a modern tech track.

That was Mellows in Aina Haina. A little before this when we were on skateboards, this was our favorite place to ride. That's the Schwinn Sting, and that's Malvert in the backround. This was one of those $.35 pictures for Alex Adams. hehe Rory

There were constant battles in different age groups all the time. Which made for some very exciting races. John Ichimura and Rory, Bo Ikeda and Ken Van Orman immediately comes to my mind. And of course Roland Tang and Eric Kono. They were feirce rivals on the track. Here they are in 10 expert. No 90 Eric Kono No. 10 Roland Tang.

Looking forward to seeing your pics! Ever run into Jesse? Miss that guy. He was my training partner for quite a long time. That kid could rip.

Most of the guys make it to HK track on Sundays at 4ish. I'll be there whenever any old schoolers post that they will be there unless work gets in the way. Lately I have been working Sundays and been trying to heal up. I wish I could have rode with Moki, Changstar and Klau or at least make it there to take pics. MTB is fine man. K Lau uses a BMX bike impersonating a MTB. Hope to see you out there soon.

i'll check up there on sundays but i usually ride dirt bike on that day. i usually get home about that time, so i'll check you guys out.

Here's a couple of pics that I borrowed from EKI's. I can't identify the riders. But, I love seeing any pic from our BMX Roots. So if you have pics please share with us. We all love seeing old pics. If you have any old pics and can't scan them get in touch with me I'll scan them for you.

I remember going to town to ride and see what new jumps they had built. Sometimes the jump would only be there one day but they always seemed to find another place to build one. How about those sprints we would do through Ala Moana center with secuity trying to catch us. Cannons was still the best to me, imagine if a jump like that was on the race track, guys would be comming out to just hit that jump. All that air and to flat landing too. New school guys have no clue how to land smooth without a backside to land on.

Changstar
Jeremy K.
Great Stuff Changstar!

I did the Ala Moana sprints several times. We used to go ride up and down the escalator that was like a ramp. I remember my first time "racing" the security guard. My buddy Myles Won from St. Patricks and I were riding the escalator ramp. Guard came and wanted to "take us in" so he chased us. I beat him on my goose with Motomags. sarcastic_hand.gif Punk kids we were. Sorry, MR. Security Guard!

I agree Cannon's had better jumps. I practically lived there too. But, for me Tiangles is special. It's where it all happened for me. I saw someone jump for the first time there, I saw BMX bikes for the first time there. I met lifetime friends there. I remember being there on my candy apple Schwinn Stingray with rear slick and ape hanger bars. My childhood was never the same after that place. I lived to ride after that place.

I have a mountain bike here in SoCal, but I usually go out riding once in a blue moon. I am thinking of trading in my MTB and getting a 24". Not sure who I would ride with or where I would ride. My friends said they saw a bunch of jumps a mile or 2 away from my house, but I think those are monsters that some young bucks do some "360 inverted rodeo cancan no hander". Might be a little too much for me.

I got some history about Nials bike from Jim of Safari Cycles:

"The cruiser that Niall was riding was a DG BMX San Diego prototype mild steel street cruiser. It was a mockup for a later production run and was never meant to be "raced". It was heavy, but a fun bike to ride. Even the Team Safari small guys like Marc Kawakami had fun riding it. DG later followed with their CrMo race version in yellow with blue stickers."

Thanks Jim!

Jason,

When you started this topic .Did you ever think it would get the type of responses it's getting? This topic seems to be the second highest in posts on this forum. All the pictures and articles that keep coming out of the woodworks. Well I got a lot of pictures and results and trying to get other people that used to race to post pictures also.

Jeremy,

Keep up the pics . I like seeing the current pics and the old ones you have been posting.

Will keep posting a picture a day .
Jason Chang
No, this thread has surpassed my expectations by far. I started it while stuck at home after knee surgery, torn ACL for the second time. I have BMX to thank for that. But I was only hoping to maybe find a few fellow old days BMXers from Hawaii. Little did I know what a huge thing it has turned into. Now if we can just everyone out on bikes that would be the shizzle.

Yeah! No gate starts. It's an interesting pic. The bikes and gear look like 79-80's stuff. But, no gate - yet it's on a starting hill. Pretty cool actually. I remember no gate starts at the Kewalo Basin track. If my memory serves me correct Dennis Saiki was the starter at my first race.

Rockne and I had a conversation about this pic. He told me that this pic wasn't of a race it was of a jumping exhibition. Funny thing is I remember that it was a jumping exhibition but I let him explain the whole thing to me. His whole point is he wanted me to know why he was in the back. So I told him to post a comment about that. He said "I'm not going to say that." He also wanted me to know that his older brother Bobby was the one that circled him in the pic. I told him yeah right! So while he's stuffing his face with some McDonalds food I'm being an asssssssss and dogging him as good friends often do. laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif biggrin.gif He said he'll get back at me because he has some pics of me wearing super short 80's style shorts. Now that is just wrong. But, hey if it will get him to stop lurking whatever right!

BC,

I seen the post! Hopefully they make some cool stuff and not end up like mongoose. Any company that makes a comeback from our day is awesome. I read somewhere that DG may comeback too. Hopefully if they do they will make more New School geometry frames with Old School looks. Like what Redline did with their anniversary frame......longer top tube, canti brake mounts, 1 1/8" fork etc.

So BC, we gonna be able to convince you to start riding too? biggrin.gif

I got the videos and thanks for posting that Jim had those videos. My parents loved them as this is footage that we had only in pictures. Nice to see videos of the old days.

Brian, Wow wasn't to sure who kaneohe808 was, I only guessed it was you until now. I remember you and your brothers back in the days. Sorry to hear about Darrin, what is derek up to now? Are you still a police officer and do you still have that chevy impala?

well, regarding your comment about being to old and to FAT? The first time we went out to ride at HK I was the only "big" or shall I say "husky" guy out there and felt kinda bad until we had that small get together at James Katasakos place and I felt alot better.....well, I dont want to mention any names larry c were j.katasako on the bigger size..nah you guys know i'm only telling the truth..nah but as far as old...We're all old here.
You should come out anyways if not to ride just to hang out and shoot the "breeze" you know us "big guys" should stick together too.

Give my regards to your family,

Aloha,
Roland Tang
kaneohe808
What's up Roland,

It's nice to see you and your brother back in the saddle again. I really enjoy seeing the pics Jeremy posts about the bunch of guys riding again.

If you think back in the days there were a lot of family siblings racing at Cambells.
You and your brother
Me and my brothers
Evan and Myles Yonamine
Lex and Lance Tam Ho
Moki and Miki Fernandez
The Ikedas just to name a few.

Derek is living in Washington and works as a Police Officer for the dept. of defense. As for Darrin he was just at the wrong place and wrong time back in 1993. But thanks for the thoughts. We got rid of the Impala and yes I am still a Police Officer working out of Kaneohe Station. Hopefully I can retire in five years.

Tell Rock he looks good from the last time I saw him at his house many years ago.

We still got Darrins Mongoose with the 80/60 gauge spokes I think Shimano Sealed Hubs and the Dura Ace cranks.I think it has a Tuff Neck on it with Redline V Bars not sure Haven't looked at it for a couple years. Its in the back Tool shed collecting dust. oh and that trusty hard plastic seat.

Maybe one day I will come out. But for now I am content with just posting stuff here .

Keep posting those pics . I know I will.
Jason Chang
I don't care what size Roland is now, you should have seen him at HK. I felt bad that I wasn't riding harder. I would say both Tangs and JK made me step up and push, well till I saw Roland eat it, then reality set in that we may feel pain more now. Brian, so who placed best between you and your brothers that day? I remember you being one of the last Kailua bike shop guys still racing after all the others had stopped.

"b" has a bubble down the middle, similar to the excel motocross rims. "x" and "c" are box aluminum extrusions with c being flat and x having a raised center about 1/16 of and inch tall. c rims are light, but mostly ended up in the front, like stu thompson's redline, because they weren't as strong as the c and x. the c rims were good, until the x was made, then that became the standard until today's double extruded rims. hope that helps.
