Here's one of Safari Cycle riders Daryl Saiki and Dale Farias taken at Hawaii Racewaay Park in the late 70's. The guy in the middle is from REDLINE. Photo from JT of Safari Cycles.

ANYONE KNOW WHO THE GUY IN THE MIDDLE IS?

I think his name was David Clinton. He used to race for Redline. Man this guy had some massive legs.

QUOTE (kevlau @ Mar 23 2008, 11:10 PM) *
may have been James Katasako.

wasn't katasako on kuwahara? i remember he had the cleanest bike. and he always had a loud freewheel.

James Katasako Rode a Redline. Garrick Isaka also rode Redline. Katasako then switched to Kuwahara . They both raced for Eki Cycles.

Good day JK-

I'm a shade bit late on my reply to you on this one, quite possibly because I needed to analyze the term we call "mature" or "maturity". I would assume that when someone says "mature", like I did in the context of BMX staging and framed in the timeblock related to the era of the 70s, we might think of a concept like "non-sensical dialogue with the under-developed structure of self". Simply put, I did not possess the level of maturity (simplistically, even) needed to be a successful BMX racer. This element of the BMXer's repertoire, among other catagories at their disposal, may be one of the most important considerations when moving up in the ranks. I believe concentration, focus, non-judgemental performance (not to be castrated by the self) and bouncing back after a defeat, repeatedly, molds one's character into a strong self as life develops, both inside and outside BMX.

Seems to me that in your teens, as well as some others like Chang, Lau and maybe even Mongoosedrummer (though I am short of information to process here) had a fraction of attraction, at least, to the goal of BMX and an awareness of the implications the starting gate presented. I was going through some motion really, not fully comprehending the task at hand, thus unable to synthesize non-material elements available and manufactured by the self for either preservation or conquering/mastering that which presented itelf given the dirt-laded environment. If you think about it, patterns of the surroundings in addition to concurrent inputs to the senses provide the fabric by which our insights emerge, thus seriously complex images + information can then be distilled into clear and somewhat sensible/logical plans that can springboard into action by the self. This means a vision or cloud of thought that can be digested beforehand and thus a mind-body connection can be made and actualized once the actual process is placed into motion by the continuum called time.

It is here that I wanted to highlight, the mere recognition of the task at hand as one. When I mentioned the maturity level as noticed by a detached observer as myself, speaking of you and other BMXers who achieved various levels of success, I meant the ability to produce an output equivalent to actionizing insights from the minefield of the abstract to the concrete. This is problem identification immersed in cognitive juices, over time, marinating itself into a crystallized plan of attack on the par of formalized thinking as opposed to arbitrary action of the moment. When the gate is hoisted into position and tires make contact with the metal grating of destiny, the golden road of success is already pre-paved with innovative stratagies meant to induce success as envisioned. This is where I failed miserably as a BMX racer since at the time I was either unwilling or unable to fuse the concentrated effort with my fuzzy plan of attack at the moment of "Riders ready, GO!".

Hence, I attempted to reflect back and bring to the forefront of my memories the possible thoughts that may have been swirling about in my head back in the BMX pits between motos. Looking back at the photos of yesteryears throughout Vintage BMX, in many cases, the most successful individuals appeared (at least to me) to be able to harness the anxiety and detect, enhance and ultimately, produce the desired action by carefully and masterfully synthesizing the immaterial and material to the moto at hand, enjoying the benefit of conceptualized victory. And learning from mistakes.

This is, in my glazed estimation, the groundwork for maturity in sport and in life.

Quite honestly, I did not possess that level of maturity back then as my imagination was enjoying the on-going disagreements between my carnal desires and mind, unable to over-ride my preoccupation with either jumping at Cannons or my equally debillitating need to bunnyhop a picnic table with ease.

I salute those BMXers from back-in-the-day till today, those who seize the day rather than spending time between motos deconstructing the issue of non-functioning BMX actions of the near/far past.

Here is a photo from the Kauai championships way back in the 70s.

L to R: Paiea Paul, Mark Miyashiro, Raymond Motosue, Tayne Toma, Eric Mitsunaga and Lance Nishida

Introspecting and analyzing are valid tools, but applying the vision to the dirt is another matter.

Here, I am leading Kerry Kamaunu over a small rise. I lost a race playoff for the last spot in the main.

Strangely, I never got mad at losing, which I managed to be really good at!

I wonder, is this another undesirable trait that roadblocks BMX success?

Keep those wheels turning!

I remember that place .It was in back of Safeway. We used to spend hours there everyday. Now there are town houses. We had a starting gate and a make shift track. That drop was nasty into the pit. At least a 15-20' drop to the bottom.

Wow, Buddy is here. Give us an update on you now, and Barry and Bo too. A few years ago I talked to your Dad and he said all 3 of you were in the mainland, he's real proud of you guys and loves to talk the old days of BMX. There are a few pics of you guys here, I'll look for more so keep checking in. So far we got Cuna, Rockne, and Rory too. If we can find Sano and Moki to get online that would be all the Hawaii BMX #1's .

#22 I think is Brad Mckean or something like that. Thanks for the pic. That was one of my first races as an expert. Darren was the MAN of the class, so keeping with him did a lot for my confidence, never could figure out how such a fast strong guy like Darren could run Alloy cranks. Yes that is Jody Char. Hi Jason,

I'm to fat and old.But I will be posting pics and results from the days. Got a picture with Rory next to Stu Thomsen"The MAN of BMX" , Scott Clark,Tinker Juarez, Eddie King ETC........

Got a trivia question ? Can anyone tell me Tokus last name? The guy that ran the races. Think hard
Jason Chang
I think it was Fukuhara.
In the 6 years that Hawaii BMX association ran who were the 5 riders that wore the number #1 plate. When Hawaii went ABA 1982 who was the first ABA #1 plate holder?

Just for history sake. The original sanction in Hawaii was "Hawaii BMX" First run by Dennis and Faye Saiki, then later by Toku.
To my best memory the holders of the number one plate were.....
1976 Rory Ingano
77 John Llacuna
78 Moki Fernandez
79 Rockne Tang
80 Rockne Tang
81 Kevin Sano
Second half of 1981 Oahu went ABA and Kevin never got to run his #1 plate. All these guys were heros to me. They are the legends that inspired many many generations of racers.

Jason here is your answer.
kaneohe808

Tokus last name is Fukuhara. Sorry Rory but Jason with his wealth of knowledge got the answer right.

Sorry for the black and white photo. But this is a clipping we got I yhink from that Hawaii motorsport paper that was free at Rons Performance. Well there it is Hawaii's best against "THE MAN" Stu Thomsen. I am not sure when this was taken . If it was the 16 Expert or the Open Class. If it was the 16 Expert class finals then Rory took 3rd and Stu Thomsen took 4th. Also the picture above that has Eddie King on a Torker Bike. I don't know who is in back of him but I am sure someone will figure it out.

South Pacs August 25th 1979

Don Atherton Steve Shepard Denny Davidow Stu Thomsen Brent Patterson Jeff Kosmala Greg Hill
Eddie King Can't remember if his brother came down also Toby Henderson Will Scurto Peter Loncaravich

I know there were more but I can't figure it out.

Wow Rory, how old were you in that picture? were you factory Robinson yet? give us some backround on your past sponsors, like who was first then who was next and what bikes did you ride and what did you think of each bike.

Changstar

Jason, yes that was a factory ride at that time. The factory rider's jerseys had a hollow "r" in the middle and t
the stripe down the side.

First sponsor- The Bike Shop. We had a race of our crew, who rode at Kaiulani Elementary school in Palama, against the riders at Kailua Bike Shop, this was before organized races. We raced them at Kailua Dump. Racing and Trials. We did pretty good against them. From that time on, Dennis started treating me like a sponsored rider. Then when the Mongooses came in, it was official. Mongooses were good handling bikes, but the bottom bracket was too low for me.

Second- Eki cyclery
SX 1000. Light bike, weird feeling. Bottom bracket too high, front too long, too stiff.
Jag. I would rate this bike behind the Sting because it was heavy. Probably because of the drum brake that I had on. And, it was camouflaged with Roger DeCoster stickers. hehe
Robinson. Light, flexy. The front end was a little steep but I got used to it. I did the best racing on this bike even though it didn't fit me too well.
Schwinn Sting. Outright the best bike I rode. Could pull 45/16 gearing with 170's. It did everything you wanted it to in the air and on the ground. Very light. One flaw-too stiff. The welds would break. It didn't feel stiff because the frame was small heightwise.
Redline. Light bike, flexy, too big for me. Good turning bike though.

Third- Safari Cycles
Profile. Light, really flexy, but this bike was the best turning. I rode this bike at Keehi Lagoon and I could go into the first turn feet up, no brakes, no worries.
GT. I would rate this bike third. Head angle felt really steep, I had to get used to that. Front was a little longer than I was used to. BUT when Jim put Profile cranks on this bike, it had the meanest snap out of the hole, the tire wouldn't even spin.

I'd like to thank all of my sponsors very deeply, because without them I would even be where I was, because we couldn't even afford an average bike at the time. Dennis, Faye, Ed, Jim, thanks for putting up with me because when I look back, I was an arrogant kid. Thanks again............................Rory

Yeah, Ichimura had my number man. He was much bigger that me and he had a good cutoff technique where he would get a little ahead of me and throw his elbow over mine. I didn't know at the time how to defend that kind of riding, so I just tried to pedal a little faster. Rory

Wat up Barry, and welcome. Bust out some old pics. I remember you town guys had a lot of them. I remember when you were 15 and starting to go fast. Me and Sano would talk about how you would be a instant threat to the older X class. What bike were you on before you rode for Jim on the Profile? I think everyone noticed you when things started clicking and you started winning X. Remember when we all worked at Mccully, what happend to all the other town guys? The only one I see once in a while is Tyson.

Changstar

i got some old pics but my new computer doesnt accept my older scanner. might have to give k. lau or someone to post. i used to ride a thruster regular, x long, and tri power. russell tetsutani is a plumber, walter w. works at heco, jeff kang only see him once in a blue moon, garry pumpkin is at curry house mccully. i read you guys go out to hawaii kai to ride, i live right by the park, i think k. lau knows where.

oh yeah, Barry U returns. i know i posted this one before, but its worth another look. checkered vans, checkered pads, checkered plate, and super short shorts. mandatory for coolness in the wooden ramp days of oahu bmx. and full works profile courtesy of being #4 and Safari Cycle.

whats up k. lau... if only someone thought of burmys back then. short quiksilvers and corduroy shorts was the ticket. one day i gotta check out your new bikes, might think of getting one.

Looking forward to seeing your pics! Ever run into Jesse? Miss that guy. He was my training partner for quite a long time. That kid could rip.

Most of the guys make it to HK track on Sundays at 4ish. I'll be there whenever any old schoolers post that they will be there unless work gets in the way. Lately I have been working Sundays and been trying to heal up. I wish I could have rode with Moki, Changstar and Klau or at least make it there to take pics. MTB is fine man. K Lau uses a BMX bike impersonating a MTB. Hope to see you out there soon.
