I love that full gate pic. Now that I think back did we only have a 6 man gate? I don't remember Malvert in a GT uni, and where was Rory at that time? I know Rory went from the Robinson stuff to Diamondback, then later GT. What was the changes for Malvert after Robinson? Can we get Kata out to ride with us? I remember his bike having a loud freewheel and always looking brand new. I think he was one of the original riders that went pro here localy. I think they were John, Moki, Malvert, Rory, James, Buddy, Rockne. I think??? If so, did they ever all come out on the same day and how did it go with only 6 guys on the gate but 7 pros? Can anyone confirm that Malvert raced in the old ESPN pro series, in the single A pro main (Burbank)was a Robinson rider they called Bob Bewigno, Gary Ellis won that one.

We used to call it Shimano. I'm not sure if it's a Triangles and Cannons Club thing but we started to call it that after seeing John George race down here. He would pull Shimano's, helicopters, crossups or whatever you want to call it off of the Tabletop jump at HRP. He raced for Shimano at the time so that's how it was coined in our time or area.

If there is a class I'll race whatever class you guys race. I don't think we have enough riders yet to bracket it by age. So it'll probably be just cruiser class.

Lets see.....Possible riders in Cruiser:

1. Rory Ingano
2. Rockne Tang
3. Moki Fernandez
4. Jason Chang
5. Russel Hirata
6. Roger Nitta
7. Malvert Benigno
8. Jeff Wandell
9. Paiea Perfectnut
10. Sugi
11. Klaus
12. Roland Tang
13. jk

Did I leave anyone out? Probably the fastest right now in my opinion is ____________. ph34r.gif

jk

My vote is that it would be a shoot out with Rory and Rockne. Then, don't be surprised when JK and Hirata-san crosses the finish line 1 & 2....

Saw a couple open class races in Kauai where I went against Sugi...I could say that I blew him away, but that would be lying. I believe I finished in 3rd and while he finished 2nd behind Ken VanOrman.

I would've been exiled from the "Mililani Gang" if I ever let you beat me.If you ever passed me,I would've faked a crash just to save face rolleyes.gif .Plus in later years while we were raggin' on you,I'd have to eat my words once the loss was brought up.It's a Samurai thing!!---Don't worry, when you come back, you can have a chance at revenge. These legs just don't got the spin like before. When I do try sprints now,it feels like the engine wants to rev but the carbuerator has other ideas.

Slavey,is this from the race you're talking about?

I remember at one of the Kauai races allmost breaking my hand on the Friday/single point race and being able to race in the Saturday/double points race. That was a dumb mistake.
Sugi
I'd have to say that the best parts of this thread has got to be the old pictures of everybody.---Who was taking all those pictures of Rockne in Palolo and with what kind of camera?I mean the pictures are really good quality for what it is.I remember my pops using a Vivitar 110 to shoot our race pictures. That's why I can't post any of them,we look like ants in them. The only good pictures I have of me were all given to me by The Changs.

It looks like the one. You had the same uniform. I was actually keeping up with you. I may have passed you once or twice, but I don't think I actually beat you to the finish line. I remember you hurting your hand. Remember the restaurant Bull Shed in Kauai. Too bad they didn't have the race on video where I beat Pea Scanlan to take 1st place. Actually...I had to take him out and have him take last and I had to take 1st in that moto to win the class. Funny how things jus happen.

Must've been the angle of the camera. worried_anim.gif .

You must've hit Pea pretty hard to take him out,he must've out weighed you by a 100 stones.Don't worry those old guys we use to ride with taught us all kinds of dirty racing."Rubbing is racing".
Jason Chang
Boy I need to see those DVD's. No one in our group would ever live it down if they got beat by Slavey. Not because he was slow or bad, but being the youngest automatically meant you shouldn't beat anyone since they were older than you. But for the record, by age in his class Slavey was one of the top dogs. But I don't think any of us wanted to have been beat by a younger guy. The biggest gap covered by a younger rider is still to me Shane Sakuoka. When we had time trials, Shane at 8 years old clocked just one tenth of a second slower than a 15 year old Hanalei. Then again Spanky never did well against the clock either. Of course Spanky many times never made it to the finish line. The all time fastest was Rory, who set a time that was never beaten. We had a lot of top guns out to try too, Sano, Fernandez, llacuna and all the Mililanians just to name a few. I know it got boring at times but those time trials made us all faster.

Changstar
Jason Chang
I remember that Kauai race. Didn't Higa want to tape your hand to the grip so you would be locked in? I think that was the first track we rode that had real berms. Who was with us when the **** tried to get in our room? I know Keith was with us. Remember using the starting gate as a jump. Also racing in Maui and the Big Island.

After looking at those videos, I was mostly in second or third place most of the time. I think I only beat you that one race and that was it. I remember the announcer freaking out that this 15 or 16 year old guy was in the lead in an combined class (never have enough peeps in both of our classes) for 3/4th of the race. I just remeber getting passed on the last turn. Booooo!

My nemesis' were Pea Scanlan, Regelio Coloma, Ken VanOrman, Bert Horikawa, Dave Akuna or Acuna. If it wasn't for these people, I would have rulled my age group. Hee Hee.

BTW, does anyone still have those Haro pants? What about the elbow pads?

REAL NICE styled table Mr. JK!

Your skills are back in full flight, so is your payment on the learning curve -- Owwie..

But this table pic is classic, blood and all!

With the front wheel, looks kinda like the above, shot in Pearl City, on the placed called Flats. Course your shot is way cooler:)

The photography is outstanding, who is shooting the pic -- great timing and clear as blood... love the number plate and shiny frame.. the topside body armour is rad as hell..

Your biceps are huge, like Rambo's... !

Making me hungry to jump, though the pic of your wreck is a reminder of the cautions.

Went out on Saturday at like 4:30pm to HK track and again on Sunday morning, both times no one was there, but the dirt and jumps look inviting.. and dangerous too LOL

Keep up the radness, you and Changstar post great pics.. someday...

P,

Those aren't my biceps.....it's the body armor I am wearing. LOL Covers all the way down to the biceps. Too bad we keep missing each other at HK. We went out on Sunday but got there later than usual. Probably got there about 11. I had all these hopes of Tabletopping after looking thru all your pics the night before. Obviously it didn't happen. I bit it on the third jump. Luckily my wife was hiking the Koko Head trail at the time and didn't see me doing a "Dirt Superman". You know that feeling you get when you just hit the jump and something dosen't feel right? Well as a kid I could save a bad launch but, now? Well that innate ability you have as a kid has left me. Obviously. I lost confidence after that. Lines from Top Gun kept creeping in my head..........."keep sending him up".........."but he won't engage".........So I kept at it. angry.gif

My wife has been taking the pics. I'm pretty happy with the pics she takes. Imagine the pics we would have if digital cameras were around when we were kids. Especially you!

I'm digging the pics P keep them coming. I went to Eki Cyclery today and borrowed some of the old pics to post. Gotta help you out with the pics man. You are holding up the BMX roots front. Jay at Eki was nice enough to let me borrow them. He said someone stopped by earlier to borrow the album they have. Who ever it is I hope to see pics here.

Wow man, don't even know what to say, but you are truly pushing your limits and giving your blood for BMX. I am proud of ya. As long as it is only surface damage. Not to curb your enthusiasm on vintage riding but the way you are pushing your limits you should be on a modern day bike to make the most of your effort. I mean we all know it is risky but I think the risk is greater on old equipment. Just because you could be on a bike that fits you better and handles better. Also I have a fear that some of my vintage stuff may break easier now that it is 25+ years old. That could be a permanant end to riding if you snap some forks, or rip the headtube off while landing. While our group is growing and the fun is at an all time high, I don't want to see any of you drop out due to injuries. Yeah I am selfish in that I want all of you around because it is more fun for me. That vibe just feeding off each other is so cool. Of course the old saying that you will fall on the one area that is not protected, I guess is true. So we either wear every piece of protection ever invented, or naked. Hey P, were you riding when you went to HK or just looking to hang out with whoever shows up? If you are not riding yet, get on it man!!!! I say the more the merrier.

Changstar
Jeremy K.
Changstar,

I agree with some of what you are saying. The quill style stem bothers me more that the possibility of the frame snapping. I'm planning on changing to a S&M threadless fork and Snap stem soon. As far as the frame goes......I think I am ok. It's chromoly with a gusset. It won't snap catastrophically like a aluminum frame would. The Chromo has give. I bet the Crupi cruiser I just picked up will break faster. I am looking at the 20" S&M .38 Special though. That thing looks dope! And it's Chromoly! Can you tell I am reluctant to go 24"? blush.gif

That's cool!!So how much longer until that bike is ridable?

I think if I start riding with safety gear,I might push harder thinking that I'm protected and do something I shouldn't have done in the first place.I've been looking into it though, especially a better helmet for my son.

ZAP,

Here's how you can post old pics.

1. Scan the pic.

2. You need to download the scanned pic to a image hosting website. I use photobucket. You can open
a free account at photobucket.com

3. Now that you have your pic downloaded to photobucket you will see under the pic the following:

Email & IM
Direct Link
HTML Code
IMG Code

Double click on the one that says Direct Link. A yellow pop up will appear that says copied.

4. Now go to vintage and post like you normally do. In the little tool bar for your post there are a bunch
icons. Go to the one that says "insert image" when you drag your mouse over it. It's one of the green
ones. Click on that.

5. An Explorer User Prompt will pop up on the top left of your screen. Right click on the white area where
it says http:// and then hit paste. It will enter the link for your image. Then hit OK.

6. You should be good to go. You can hit preview post to see if it works first.

Hope this helps. Looking forward to seeing your pics!

JK man, I just missed you again.. I was on the road bike, but I like to visit that HK track you guys have been keeping nicely manicured.

I hate that feeling of a jump gone wrong, been there many times. Here is one thing I recall from back in the day, after awhile I never crashed.. seriously. I could do all kinds of crazy azzz jumps and stuff, just simply didn't gribble. Weird I guess.. Point is, I think you guys who are putting all the dirt time back in shall reach that level again.. 'specially those who didn't quit completely, just tappered down in the sport..

Is she a photographer or artist? The timing is spot-on. Everyone has it so good these days as you say, for both digital stills and digital video for movies.. I have a Sony HDC-748 digital cam I use to make home movies of all our vacations -- I also invested in Sony Vegas Studio Pro and this is the best software for the buck, albeit, slightly expensive..

I'd like to come out and film you BMX dirt bunnies sometime... that would be epic!

Howdy Changstar!

I only have a road bike right now so like to get in alot of miles.. that is my titanium horse I straddled on those days.. I did hope to see some of you guys out there, however if no one there, then I simply carry on..

I definitely wish to ride on BMX again, do some jumping.. I really am busy though with two jobs and a career that has not relented in a long time.. err, excuses-sounding, I know, but that is the facts.. for now, of course..

KLAUS asked to post a pic of my road bike <long, long ago -- sorry mate>, I don't have much to offer though..

Here I am second from the back, just in front of Kevin Kawainui in the red jersey - someplace out near Waimea Bay, heading towards the North Shore.. round the island ride

This one shows a bit more of the bicycle:

Merlin Extralight titanium frame, Reynolds Uzo Pro carbon fork, Dura-Ace 9 speed STIs, Zipp 303 carbon rims, Chris King headset, Easton EC90 carbon handlebars, Sidi Genius 4 shoes with SPD. The black Felt carbon bike on the left belongs to Pat Chung (in red jersey). That is Ingrid in the center, great female road racer.

Nice bikes in this pic! The beautiful BMC belongs to Arnel.

Left to Right: Arnel Supnet, PNUT, Tom Moen and Kevin Kawainui

** I may be smiling, but it is because the ride is over, these guys know how to drop the hammer LOL

Hope that helps.. some day I will meet the dirt again

Cheers + Beers..

As for the pics the wife takes. Every landing is followed by my "did you get it, did you get it?" She is so patient with me. She calls me the eldest son. haahaahaa. She does have a good eye though. So does JT and Cosmo.

I bet you are going to be a force if we all start racing again. All that spinning on a road bike will pay off for sure.

There was always a wealth of talent in the Ingano blood. I think I remember waaay back that Mrs Ingano won the Mothers day race against the Moms. But I have to say none of them could match the RPM's that Rory had. I don't know what the Eki secret is but Malvert and Rory could spin like nobody else. Just watched a few of Jim's DVD's and those guys speed would be fast in any era. Even had a moto of me in a novice race, in a big Orange motorcycle helmet and pants tucked into socks. Wow that was cool. Also seeing Rory mix it up with Stu and Denny Davidow.

Us guys at Eki's used to always change up our gearing just because we felt like it, at least me and Malvert. Sometimes we used to throw on 45/16s and maybe about a month later we would throw on 40/16s. But we would always go the same speed. We used to just push each other when we rode everyday, everywhere we went, not racing but riding at a faster and faster pace. That's how we both learned to spin. That's why gearing didn't matter to much to us. As for the pants tucked into the socks Jason, I wonder who started that trend? scratch_one-s_head.gif

Ok so now who is the starter of the pants tucked into your socks racing uniform? Seems funny now but I think that was the most common look at the track. I used to think if you had race pants you were expert or rich. As for gearing, many of you have met my Dad(RIP) but he was serious about gearing. He came from a drag racing background and was a math wiz which helped me a lot. I was not blessed with any talent to ride a bike. So we had to make every part of racing as best it could be since I needed all the help I could get. For guys like Rory and Malvert, they were fast on anything. But me, I was not so lucky so having my bike set up right made a huge difference. Cause if it was wrong boy did it show on me. Even riding technique was something that I had to work on a lot and try to learn from those who were fast. I learned a ton from just studying guys like Rory, Moki, John, Sano. Each of the had strong points I tried my best to emulate. Thank goodness for video cameras, cause I would watch hours of racing. I still like to watch todays pros and experts just to see how they do things. But with all the training I don't think I ever got to the foot speed that Rory and Malvert had, I sure tried.

Not sure either but, I know the first guys I saw doing it was Rockne, Richard Okimoto, and Mark Gentry.

Cool helmet that could be used for BMX riding on sale at http://www.chainlove.com/ $64.85, reg price $139.95. Will not last long as this site only puts 1 item on sale at a time until it runs out. Sorry if it has changed by the time you read this message. If you like the helmet but missed the sale, they sometimes will run the item again in a day or so, so check back later. They don't have many BMX items on sale, more road and mountain bike stuff. Their sister sites are http://www.steepandcheap.com and http://www.whiskeymilitia.com. Cool sites.

Six Six One Pro Bravo Helmet:
The Six Six One Pro Bravo Helmet uses a Coolmax-covered liner and excellent ventilation to keep your noggin safe and comfortable as you rip another trail. Even the steepest rock-covered gnar won't seem so bad with this ultralight fiberglass full-face bike helmet. The Six Six One Pro Bravo Helmet fits flawlessly with nearly any motocross goggles, so your eyes won't fill with dust as you ride your friend's back tire and wait for a spot to pass that slowpoke.

Bottom Line:
Ladder drops, skinnies, and fast techy descents call for the lightweight, well-ventilated Six Six One Pro Bravo Helmet.

So you thinking about buying that helmet? Good helmet and great price, as long as seller is legit then should be fine. I hope the Eki's reunion gets some pics to post and maybe it will continue on bikes. Yea, I can post now.

Ohh, while we are on the subject Of Eki's. Who were all the team members? I know Rory and Malvert, James, Scott. There are a few others that I thought were on the team but was never sure. Garret Isaka, Patrick Higa come to mind. Somebody give us a little history on the team. I just know they were either Robinson or Redline. And they used to have a store in Ala moana.

Oh, www.chainlove.com is big time legit. I buy stuff from their sister companies all the time. I also bought a pair of mountain bike tires a few weeks ago. They also own www.backcountyoutlet.com.

JK-

Great pic, thanks for posting that.. love the feel of the speed heading towards the Campbell tabletop jump after the first giant turn.. well, it appears to be that straight before the big jump.

I present to you.. the great and affable Cosmo..

KENNETH "COSMO" GORMAN:

Last I heard he moved to Papua, New Guinea.. this after the air controller strike back in the day. One of the most intelligent guys I've ever had the pleasure of meeting, I'm sure he'll turn up one time or another via a Google search of BMX or of himself, for that matter.

Thinking back and looking at the photos I have, I would go so far as to say most of them were probably shot by Cosmo, although my neighbor Bruce, my step-father Paul and some others were pretty good at handling 35mm back then. I gather some of the other blurry ones were done with those 110 types. Not sure of the author of those, the prints and negatives changed hands often and its been too many years.

I think there was a guy who ran a team whose vehicle was a large military-looking van.. I've seen them turn up at races and jump sites (hey, we RODE from home to all the jump sites). Anyone remember that group of racers/riders??

..

-p

..

The guy was Stan I can't remember his last name .He was the guy that took about 15-20 kids to races and all kinds of places for them to ride. If you notice in the pics guys racing with JT Racing jerseys .It was because of him.He would sponsor kids just like the shops did. Stan was a man with a big heart . My brother raced for him for a while before one of the shops picked him up. Don't know what happend to him. I'm sure if you ask Faye from the bike shop she could tell you. The Bike Shop had there own silver van with Team Mogoose painted on the side with the mongoose picture. The Great Outdoors guys would all hang out by the van and blast the music in between motos

Great post.

CAMPBELL INDUSTRIAL PARK:

I can ID the guy directly behind me (I'm the dork in 4th spot, inside, going into this berm). That happens to be Brian Cayetano.

Can you name the two frontrunners?

Remember that giant steel ball and the old, crinkly water truck? EPIC, like fine china and Schlitz malt liquor beer.

PAIEA PAUL and REID KAWAMAE in the pits:

I can't remember the first guys name. But I think he was one of four guys that was sponsored by a bank. The second guy rode for Kailua Bike Shop and I think it was guy I only remember his last name CAMBRA . Can't remember his first name.
