Was anybody there to witness the legendary trophy dash that Scott Iha almost won against the mainland pros and top experts? Always heard about it but never heard the whole story from someone that was actually there.

Anybody riding this Sunday?

Went out this morning. No one was out there except me. Only rode for a little while. The heat started to get to me. Might try to make it tomorrow if I can arrange a sitter again. Here's a pic of the area I have been working on. My bike gives you an idea of how far apart it is. You can manual it or jump it. I tried both. Rockne said they are too close together. He's probably right. I'll extend it in the future.

So I checked my stuff. I have a set of 24" araya's with sealed GT hubs I can throw in for Moki. Not the greatest rims but they work. I also have some 170 takagi cranks. If Moki goes 20" I'll throw in a supergoose frame. Just needs to be cleaned up with oxalic. 007 told me he is game for some parts. Lets get his royal badness back on the dirt.

jk
Jason Chang
Hey JK were you able to find Oxalic acid? When I first heard about it I tried to find it but no luck, and it cannot be shipped to Hawaii. At least that is what I found out, I have a lot of parts that could use some rust removal. I think I should be at HK today about 4:00 ish.

Changstar
Jeremy K.
Changstar,

I was able to get some thru Ebay. I also used deck brightener from Lowes. That worked fine for me. Just had to let it sit longer in the deck brightener since it's not as strong. Amazing what the stuff will do though.

jk
Jason Chang
So did the deck brightner take away the rust? I went to HK today and threw down some water and got to ride your new jump. Water at that place makes a world of difference. I kinda like the jump the way it is. The wall jump takes away all your speed so it would be some work to crank up to the double if it were longer. But if the straight is smoother then a longer jump would be cool, or if you are nuts just go for a triple the way it is. Tripling it is possible but not gonna be me for a while. A loooong while, maybe never, but I bet there is somebody who will go for it.

Changstar
Jeremy K.
The deck brightener did remove the rust. It has oxalic acid in it but it's a weak solution. So you have to soak it longer. I think you can also use any product that says wood bleach. Just check the label to make sure it has oxalic. The sticky in the restoration section has an incredible amount of information and way better advice than I can give you.

007 told me he can clear the triple. I can't. I like the jump being there because it forces me to peddle back to the top side instead of being lazy. But, I agree the wall jump takes away your speed and it's hard getting it back in the HK powder. I was thinking I just need to make the jump a little more "flowey". Is that a word? Anyway I am sure you know what I mean.

jk
Sugi
Try looking into automotive wire wheel cleaner.I seen it clean up a set of rusted low rider wheels realy nice.Just spray in on,let it sit and rinse it off.

You guys all ROCK man, you are my heroes!

Love the pic JK, really sweet.. !

Part of the issue for me is this: Where can I store my new 24" -- when I get it, that is. No space in our 2 bedroom condo and my g/f has already warned me about placing a bike on the lanai, home of her exercise bike LOL.. my road bike and 3 (yes, three) extra sets of race and training wheels chew up all of the 2nd bedroom, along with my computer setup that I use to make movies and stuff with and a library of books. Really, I'm fortunate the g/f lets me allocate all that space to what amounts to mainly my belongings. I recently bought a big chain and put it in my Saturn with the idea that I could lock the bike in the back seat during work and whenever. Since we live in Waikiki, I park my car way over by the fire house and zoo. I wonder if anyone would try to break in, even if my bike was chained up big time?

<This is really a serious issue>

Must pick up some new Vans shoes too.. anyone lock their BMX bikes in the car?

A sporting dude, tripping out on the developments of former BMXers in the Great 808..

....
Jeremy K.
P,

Get rid of the excercise bike. Buy the 24" and put it on one of those staitionary trainers that hook up to the rear wheel. blush.gif I don't know about locking it in the back of your Saturn. maybe if you cover it too. If "they" see it and want it "they" will find a way to rip it off. "They" being one of the lowest forms of life. Those that steal other peoples hard earned propery.

Thanks for the kind words, never thought at our age we would even be jumping so I am pretty happy. So how many kids do each of you have? I have 3, my step son is 19, then I have 2 daughters that are 10 and 4. Way back in this thread is a few pics of me trying to do a Leary, well things were going good so I tried to do one on the cruiser. It is a little harder to throw a cruiser sideways but here is my attempt.

Changstar
Jeremy K.
Chanstar,

Sweet shot again! Fun isn't it. I've been having fun jumping there. Thats the way we started in bmx as kids. We used to jump and have fun on our gooses. Not until years later did I get more serious about racing. So it's kinda like a journey back to the beginning for me. Learning all over again. Racing is still on my mind but with no track there's not much we can do. It's slowly coming back im getting more comfortable. I'm having so much fun right now on the 20 I almost don't want to ride 24. Well, almost......my frame came in today. But, I missed the delivery. Went to the North Shore with the family.

Having fun at HK:

jk
Jason Chang
That's a killer shot, I always called it a helicopter, but now it is known as a X up. It was fun just being on a bike again at first. Now as we relearn some skills and the riding rust is slowly coming off it is even more fun. I see everyone one getting better. I feel the same way about how we all started out just jumping and having fun then leading into the racing. We truly have come full circle and working towards a new track and racing again. The older cruiser class is going to be killer. 20 inch should be too with the oldest class offered as 35 & over Nov, inter, ex. So which class is everybody aiming for? Cruiser is 31-35, 36-40, 41-45, 46-50. I think most of us fall into the 41-45 class. 20 inch could be tough with some young punk 35 year old, ha ha. But at least 20 inch offers Nov, inter and ex, cruiser is just by age. On the national level you could be on the gate with some legends like Stu in 35 & over X and 46-50 cruiser. Harry Leary is also in the same class and Greg Hill in racing 41-45 cruiser. How fun would it be to get on the gate with those guys. If anything I believe that the BMX racing in the Olympics will be the hot sport and a ton of media coverage is going to blow it up. Even more so if we get the GOLD. That should push our local Govt to get a track open. Since we are more than half way to getting one and the State is just dragging their feet in getting us building permits. The Olympics could just be the push to get it done. After all it would be sad that the hottest sport sweeping the nation and the world is not available in Hawaii. In just 35 days we will see BMX in a brighter light than it has ever had before and with all of us coming back into it as adults we stand to bring it back better than ever. Voters wanting BMX holds a lot more weight than just some kids who want to have fun. My brief plan is to start making some noise soon after the Olympics. So guys be ready to talk about it, write about it and let the Govt know Hawaii needs a BMX track.

We used to call it Shimano. I'm not sure if it's a Triangles and Cannons Club thing but we started to call it that after seeing John George race down here. He would pull Shimano's, helicopters, crossups or whatever you want to call it off of the Tabletop jump at HRP. He raced for Shimano at the time so that's how it was coined in our time or area.

If there is a class I'll race whatever class you guys race. I don't think we have enough riders yet to bracket it by age. So it'll probably be just cruiser class.

Lets see.....Possible riders in Cruiser:

1. Rory Ingano
2. Rockne Tang
3. Moki Fernandez
4. Jason Chang
5. Russel Hirata
6. Roger Nitta
7. Malvert Benigno
8. Jeff Wandell

Jason Chang
I don't know what shape everyone is in as I have not been riding with all that are on the list. My pick right now would be Klaus, since he still rides a lot and is putting in time at the jumps. Plus Klaus has always been a training animal. Would be a normal day today for him to ride from his house in Pearl City to HK, spend 3 hours hitting the jumps then ride home. For me, I think I could pull off a good gate and pedal the first straight, then run out of gas coming out of the first turn and be sitting down by the 2nd turn, ha ha ha. Maybe a little peer presure could get Llacuna and Sano out, along with Gabe Cruz. Also Darren higuchi, T Gomes, J Menor, Keith Horikawa, and about 5 or 6 that were racing at the old Wheeler track. Man 2-3 full gates would be awesome, thats gonna be a tough main. Give us all some time then I say we invade the mainland. Can't even imagine how much fun that would be. How about a Vegas race, yeeeah.

Those are some cool old shots, and some pretty big air for back then. I hope we all talk about what class we are gonna run before people start buying bikes. That way we don't get half on 20 and half on cruiser. I would hope to see us all in one big class. Bigger classes are more fun to me, that we get a full gate in the main. Although right now it looks like cruisers are going to be it, maybe later we all start up on 20 inch. JK what kind of cruiser did you get? Is it just a frame or did you get a whole bike? Anybody riding this Saturday? Can't make it on Sunday. I am supposed to call Moki the next time we go out.

Changstar
Jeremy K.
I might be able to make it on Saturday. Just gotta check on a sitter.

I got the frame, bars and hubs so far. Crupi frame, Slam Cruiser bars, and Stealth hubs...all used.

Hey JK those are some very RAD old school pics of Rock getting Triangle Park air!

Sickly ill and nicely shot, these belong in the Hawaii OldSchool Jumping Hall of Fame. Your eyes are sharp as ever, that is a red Webco I am straddling back there.

Is that Roland standing by?

Who is lying on the ground in this shot?

Great pics, I'm sure Rock and Robert Tang have more where these came from..

Here is another look at the Webco:

This was shot up the hill on 17th or 19th, on the mountain side of Waialae, way back when. Anyone remember this jump?

I don't think that's Roland. One giveaway that it's Roland or Rockne is they always wore OP cord. shorts.

I think the kid lying on the ground is Daniel Wongs kid brother. Darryl Wong?

Rockne and I went riding in town yesterday. We rode the route from Kaimuki to The Bike Shop like we used to do as kids. We stopped at a few places we used to ride and hang out. Was pretty fun seeing how the old spots have changed and talk about what we used to do as kids. Rockne started to get teary eyed at Aliiolani School showing me where he first learned to jump with his Schwinn Scrambler. Of course he thinks I didn't notice.....and I wouldn't be an asssss and post anything about it. Not me that would be uncool. unsure.gif We also stopped by McKinley HS where the Sports Week Race was. We missed Faye at TBS by abut 10 minutes. We were both real bummed about that. Would have been nice to see her and catch up. Then we rode thru Ala Moana and Waikiki. Haven't done that in years. Took me a while to get used to riding in traffic. I must be getting old because cars freak me out now. But, all in all it was a blast riding around town. I rode Rockne's 24 for a bit and it feels like a mans bike. Not like mine. Riding my 20 always feels like I ripped off some kids bike. So I made up my mind to finish the 24.

Then it happened. We hit a small hill in Kapahulu. Rockne went up pretty fast. Stopped, took out his cell phone and called Roland to come pick us up. We were only about a mile from his house but all uphill. I dogged him and tried to get him to continue but no luck. So I might have to change my opinion on who would be the fastest if everyone started to race again. That dog can't hunt anymore.

Just kidding Rock........But here's a pic of you wussing out just for the boys. angel.png

Wow, just watch some of the DVD's Jim made last night. Man, was I goofy looking or what? I wasn't as good as I thought I was. blush.gif In the early videos (1983), I was getting my butt kicked by Ken VanOrman, but in the later videos (Keehi Lagoon days), it looks like I was getting SOME revenge (maybe it was the advantage of having the ramps in Mililani). Who was Dave Acuna? He kicked my A#S consitently during the Hickam Championship races in 85. Saw a couple open class races in Kauai where I went against Sugi...I could say that I blew him away, but that would be lying. I believe I finished in 3rd and while he finished 2nd behind Ken VanOrman. Sugi was a fast little guy, but he was also 2 years older than I was. I wish there was video of the race where I had to go against the older guys including Chang (he was like 20 years older than me) and actually led the race till the last turn where I got passed by somebody...not Chang, some haole guy that was really fast.

A few things I noticed from watching these tapes...1) I wasn't as good as I thought I was, 2) Some 25 years later, you can still recall the big races and the feeling you had after losing those big ones, 3) I really had no stamia as I looked gassed at the end of the track, 4) Keehi Lagoon was a really long track during the 84 Championships, 5) I can see why Sugi was called "small Lance" but he should have been called "small and fast Lance", 6) At the finish line, Chang would throw his head back in disgust if he lost a race, 7) Klaus was smooth on the track, 8) I would always look back to find out where the other racers were if I leading, allowing the others to slowly catch up, 9) I had numbers 64, 20?, and 17, 10) My mom actually came to some races as I could here her screaming "GO DAVE" in the background.

Ah....Those were the days!! Thanks Jim!!

Hello,Rory did you keep any Robinson frames or forks looking for one of the early model type? Let me know thanks.

007, No I haven't kept any of them. I gave them all away to my nephews and my sons. All the good stuff, all the GT stuff, profile cranks, dura ace hubs, bw leathers, everything. I got so burnt out at one point of bmxand motocross that I didn't even want anything to do with it. Well I've come full circle now and I don't regret doing that. It's nice to see other people keeping their old stuff, brings back good memories. Rory

Everyone, James Katasako is trying to get us old guys together in about a couple of weeks. I have his phone number, but I don't I can give it out. Maybe if you get a hold of Jim, he can get a hold of James. I think he lives close to Jim. Rory
