There will be sort of a Hawaiian reunion at Chandler BMX in AZ. tomorrow night. Greg Leasure and I both work at ABA and ride Chandler BMX. Well Ryan Donnelly, an old friend and fellow long time team mate from my Hawaii days lives in AZ. now and is back riding and racing with his son. We're going to hook up tomorrow night at Chandler BMX for a practice night and Hickam reunion.
It will be fun cutting them off out of the gate again like old times. hehehehehe.
O.K. Leasure, let's hear it. LOL!!!!

Eric Phillipart lives in AZ. also. Last I heard he was a pretty successful realtor. He race PRO over here in the mainland for a while and even moved up the the AA Pro ranks. He then went into Mountain biking and was killing it at that also. I think he's a roadie now.

Thumperpilot,
Yeah, Eric is a cool dude. From what I remember his mom was a realtor in Hawaii BITD. I remember when I first met him at a Hawaii race he was wearing a Wes BMX jersey. He had just moved here from the mainland. He soon got sponsered by The Bike Shop here in Hawaii. He hung out alot with Buddy Ikeda another local standout. I saw him many years later where he was the bouncer at a club called Pink Cadillac. I followed his racing career for a while in the magazines. Glad to hear he is doing well he deserves it!

Greetings J..
I hated it myself, parts of the race course had sand on it.. thats right, SAND.. (do I recall properly??) Not sure about those "parking lot-sounding" race tracks.. but I didn't do any races there. I've always been sketchy about man-made ramps for races.
Look at this kid <ouch>:
http://s254.photobucket.com/albums/hh82/pe...inley-crash.jpgGuy Yoshimura is quite a character.. I used to hang with Guy Hanalei Toriki too, we called him "G-Boy", you were connected, I'll say that. Gabriel Moniz was also part of the Palolo Riders, another good friend of mine is Richard **forget his name!**, he was number 2 on the island. Another Triangle Park jumper was Clarence Waialeale. He works downtown in the same building as I do. I must ask him if he still has some Triangle Park pictures. I remember he could tabletop before I could.
I'll leave you with one more Hawaiian memory for now:

Clarene Waialeale. Now thats a name from the past huh? Red FMF wasn't it? I remember Gabriel Moniz, Hows about Daniel Moniz and Mark Gentry. Wow, I am surprised how much memories some pics can trigger.

HOLY CATS, Maile beach? I had no idea there were races out that side of the island.. what an epic picture, thanks for posting that one.
I think you're right about Clarence, red FMF. I can't say for sure. One guy that rode with us alot that started with an FMF was Reid Kawamae, recall that name? He rode FMF and later changed to a Cooks Brothers chrome bike, beautiful stead for sure. Gabriel was in the class of 81 like myself, but I don't remember Daniel.. Mark Gentry, yeah rings a bell, mos def.
How about Michael Woo? He lived right across the street from Triangle Park, adjacent to the Catholic church on the corner. Man, during summer time the wind would blow down from inside the valley and all the dirt/dust kicked up from us riders would send clouds of "locus-like dirt" invasions straight to those houses.. OMG the parents would go ballistic LOL.. eventually remember the city put up those stupid pipes and chains right in front of the jumps? We'd cut the chains, city would replace them, etc
That construction site pic is truely old school. I wasn't aware of the little dirt mounds in the back, but I now confess being enlightened by the pope of "dope pictures" and that would be you kind sir!
Another rider named Tayne Toma lived only 2 blocks from Triangles. Wonder where is??
To refresh your memory about Reid Kawamae, I dedicate this following picture.. taken at the McKinley sand and dirt track. Reid loved the track so much, he is about to kiss the holy ground from which his blessed name will always be cemented, in history that is LOL.

I wish against the psychological construct known as time that I had discovered this site long ago, at one time I had many BMX racing pictures and also dirt jumping pictures that I could have shared. Alas, I do not have too many left to share.. But I will not rest until I dig up everything I can possibly find to spread the love of BMX yesteryear, the real birth of passion, my first love, BMX riding and dirt jumping.
Fine evening, fellow dirt lovers. LOL

I ride my road bike up Monssarrat Ave each time I head out to the east side, next time I will stop by and check out the jumps, should they still exist, that is.
You had to possess big nuts to charge that huge wall jump back then. Getting speed might have been an issue as the road went uphill facing the jump itself. I rather loved that jump because just before summer the landing part had more grass than the raw asphalt-like ground in mid-summer, made those teeth jarring landings a tad less brutal. Instead of losing the filings in your teeth that mommy and daddy just paid $5,000 dollars for, you merely compressed shavings in your knees.
Since we're on the Hawaiian things thread, here is a picture that I love, my guys, my dirt buds.

L to R:
Steven Cabebe, me, Daniel Lee, Michael Tyau, Tayne Toma, Eric Koichi Mitsunaga and Mark Miyashiro.. on the bike. The car belongs to Cosmo, the gentleman I thank for many of the pictures I still have in my possession..
