I love Schwinn Stings. I love everything about them. The way they handle, the way they look, the way they are built; I just dig 'em.
My first "real" race bike was a Sting in '79 and I raced nothing but Stings through '83 when I was forced to ride another brand. BITD I was lucky enough to have very supportive parents, sponsors, and local bike shop owners which allowed me to have some petty trick Stings over those years.
Since I found this site in '03 I 've been working on building replicas of some of my old race Stings. So far I've managed to do my 1980 and 1982-83 bikes and just recently finished (almost) my 1981 chrome Sting.
It's taken a long time and has been lots of fun to do. It's amazing the memories that are sparked back to life when you see an old part you used to have. The black bike was the first one I attempted to build in '04 and it's cool how the more details I remember about that bike, the more it comes together now.
Anyway, sorry to ramble and I'll post individual pics and parts lists of each bike over the next day or so. Here's a couple quick group shots for now...

Thanks for the nice comments guys. Much appreciated!
Here is final version 2.0 of my 1980 Sting as I raced it in late 1980.
I am from Northern Virginia and at Starlit our local track back then we had alot of Sting riders. In 1980 we all were into tricking our bikes out with exotic roadie stuff for some reason.
We had alot of very nice roadie shops in the area and Doug who was the manager of Bicycle Pro Shop on M street in Georgetown was especially kind to me with deals on stuff. He got a kick out of us BMX kids getting wood over roadie stuff. He thought I was out of my mind when I special ordered the 180mm Campy cranks back then.
Cheats:
I never used a Regina Titanio chain back then but I was always amazed that a chain could cost $220.00. LOL! I got the one on this build for less than that
I also used Reedy pedals back then which I put Demco cages on after I trashed the Reedy cages. I have the Reedys now but it seemed stupid to have 2 pairs of mis-matched pedals so Demcos it is.
Everything is original finish/original decals except the pedal cages.

Obviously a labor of love. They all are super cool in their own way. The road bike trickery is great on the '80. I dig the down and dirty honesty of the chrome, 1 piece crank 81. I built my 84 GHP with 80% of the same parts you used on the black 82. They all remind me of the custom builds Midway Schwinn would put out in the showroom.

So does this mean we get to have a "Sting" thread on here too?
Scott's Stings are completely awesome.
OK....Here's the deal. I have been working on adding "The Sting" info on to my business web site recently. Using an edited format from "The Sting" thread, which I started a long time ago on the Schwinn site, and everyone has contiibuted to so nicely , I want to create the be-all end-all techno-info-reference pages on my own site. That way I can do what I please with it, without limits.
So, I would be honored to have your bikes added to the photos on the pages Scott. Not to mention quite a few others out there. So if you want them to be posted up, give me a few shots. Scott? Randy? Rick? Etc... Send me a few? OK to swipe some? With "Credits" or without??? LMK
www.maidenusammp.com << clicky
Check it out...Realize that I have only just begun actually putting it all together, so the info is being added as I have time. But I have piles of it to add.
I liked the color choices in your "The Three Amigos" shot...Blue Chrome and Black....It looked familiar...

Thanks again for the compliments fellas.
Tommy, I'm working on a red Sting now and it should be done in a couple months. I do also have a white Sting that is believed to have been owned by Mike Poulson. I'm about half done with it but it is going to be awhile before it's done.
Ted, the site looks great. You are more than welcome to use any pics of my bikes you choo asse. Just LMK what you need. Your Sting look awesome as always too!

Okay, Next up is the 1981 bike. In '81 chromed out bikes were all the rage in my neck of the woods.
Hutch was still pretty much the guy who sold stuff out of his van at the local racetracks even though he had started selling his own frames by then. Tuf-Neck started selling chrome stems, Sugino made chrome chainrings, but there was one missing part to the puzzle back then. Chrome rims. Mr. Hutchins started chroming 7X rims himself and they became quite the hot item and the rest is history I guess. Araya took a couple years to catch on to selling chrome rims themselves for whatever reason.
This build is a replica of the bike I raced in 1981. Here's the action shot of me Randy was asking about. This was at the '81 NBL national at South Park, Pittsburg
Also pictured in the first photo is the actual frame from the pic BITD as well as my helmet. After I quit racing I loaned the frame to a guy who raced it for another 5 or 6 years. When I got it back 10 years ago it was in pretty bad shape. Multiple cracks and shot chrome. I couldn't bring myself to mess with it though so I found this mint original chrome frameset to use instead.
Cheats:
Right after the South Park race I swapped the DX pedals for the new fangled Hutch pedals.
In the pic I was using prototype Ultramax tubular 1pc cranks. I've been looking for 4 years and can't find a set so SR copys of them will have to do for now.
I used Araya chromed rims on the build instead of Hutch specials.
I used blue/green logo tires in place of yellow lable for now.
I can't find a set of the Haro Superlites pads like in the pic to save my life.
Same thing for the Haro early "Jeff Ruminer" Series One plate. I do have all the decals for it though.
If anyone can help with any of the above listed stuff it would be greatly appreciated!
Everything is original fininish/decals except the seatclamp which is "Kustom Krylon" just like BITD
Parts List:
Frame/Fork- Schwinn Sting chrome/Schwinn chrome fork
Headset- Campagnolo Nuovo Record steel
Stem- Tuf-Neck square corner "patent pending" factory chrome
Bars- GT Pro "Santa Ana"
Grips- Oakley .5
Brake lever- Shimano DX w/ Honda XR75 Lever cover
Cranks- SR tubular subbing for Ultramax
Bottom Bracket- Hadley
Chainring- Sugino factory chrome 44T
Chainring Bolts- Sugino
Pedals- Hutch/Titron
Chain- Regina Extra CX-S
Seat- Cycle Pro Shotgun
Seatpost- Schwinn
Seatpost Clamp- Cycle Pro

OK, I'll jump on this wagon. Here are my 3 Stings. I have to admit, I got bit by the bug after Ted set me straight about a funky Team Schwinn frame that I had. While reading up on it on the other site, I fell in love with the Sting-quality, looks and everything else!
These are not as good looking as the others pictured here, but they are loved just as much. My kids beat...err... ride the heck out of them at the track. They turn heads and all of the Dad's freak out when they see them.
The chrome one is my daughter's- she is 7 years old. I laid a lot of parts out for her to pick and choose for her build, and yes, it is colorful!

Wow,
I have to get started on my STINGS! I have been on this thread for two hours. I have three stings
1. Factory 1979 chrome cut away
2. Nos 1980 black sting
3. A 1981 sting that I have gotten powder coated and plan on doing a Poulson look a like. I need to get you a couple of photos of my stuff for your page that include a Chicago hand brazed early pre-Sting factory frame from 75 to 1977.

Nice Stings guys! I love it that your kids ride those Stings Spistols. Second generation Sting fans!
That '79 chrome/blue bike rocks. Very clean.
John, yes the 16X1.75 tubes and electrical tape rim stips thing was a fairly popular trick to save rotating weight back then. As I got bigger and heavier I went to a 20" tube on the rear.
Anyone else have some Sting pics to post? If you have pics you'd like to post but don't know how you can email them to me at sloveless@hargray.com and I'll put them up for you.

Sprinter has posted this survivor before but it's worthy of showing again.
Mr. Quinn can probably tell many colorful stories about racing this bike.
Belongs to an old BMX friend.
It still exists as you see it, which is dead straight out of the early 80s as it was raced.
Yah, we would all love to buy it. I've even recommended to his parents that they call me 10 minutes before they put it to the curb.

In 79' - 80' San Diego's Shawn Texas (leading) always raced on
fully chromed out, polished out Schwinn Stings.
This was just before he became famous.
Taylor Troney in the Scwinn uniform had a super nice one too.

Todd,
You guy's were like the Sting biker gang back then.
I remember Robbie Mylls showing up at Starlit with his red Sting in early '80. I think he swapped some of the Campy roadbike parts from his old LRV, he was from AZ. before moving to VA.?...

Here's a '79 Frameset I picked up a while back..got all the parts but haven't had time to build it up yet.

Billn, That Sting of yours is drop dead gorgeous! It looks sooo clean with the all black parts.
Darrin, I assume you were talking to me. My brothers name is Todd and some people used to get us mixed up back then too! Yeah Robby was originally from AZ. His Dad was a big time track bike racer in the 50's and 60's. The Mylls' basement was like a Campy Pista museum/ candy store.
And you, Mr. Carl are just plain deranged! You do make me look like less of a Sting sick-o however so keep it up!

Sorry for confusing you Scott, I think I used to race your brother Todd. I Remember there was a Fathers Day race at Starlit (1980?) and Robby's dad smoked 'em all on Christine Mylls chrome Sting..I think he flipped me over the gate a few times back in the day when he was running the track as well..that manual latch and cable technology works well as long as it doesn't stick..OUCH!!
