What year(s) was the Oakley 1 grip sold? I have an opportunity to buy a set for my Cook Bros restoration.

Alfa, they are pre 1980. I'd venture a guess around 1978 - maybe '79.

1976(ish) thru 1978(ish), then Oakley IIs came out - but the Originals continued to be sold of course.

From transworldmotocross.com -
"It was killing me," said Jannard. "Everyday at work, I was selling products like grips that I knew could be better. I'd come back to my superiors with great ideas for the manufacturers, but they would tell me to just shut up and sell. I realized that I was going to have a heart attack if I didn't try to execute some of these ideas, so in '75 I started Oakley with $300."
Taking a grassroots marketing approach, Jannard traveled to local races, pitching his "wonder grip" to riders. The weird look of the cam-shaped grip attracted immediate attention, and before long Jannard was barely able to keep pace with growing demand.
The Unobtanium grips went from being quizzically gawked at to being trick aftermarket accessories, but there was a slight problem: their ergonomic shape was great on the clutch side, but the throttle side was a different story.

Thanks to one of you mugs, I can finally toss those blue A'me grips on the ol' CBR.
The next thing to go is the Aero seat. Anyone have a spare quilted seat, or perhaps a non-aero kashimax?

Thanks.)

From what I understand......
(Not sure of the year)
In the beginning, BMXer's would buy two pairs of motorcycle grips
and use the non-throttle grips on their BMX bikes.

JJ is partly right. If you had the bucks you would buy two sets of grips, but more often than not you would roll some duct tape to one side of the handlebar to make the "throttle" side grip fit.

I first had Oakleys for my Weinert in 1977. HUge grips on Redline Victory bars.
